Dancing with the Stars Season 23, Week 3 – Dancing by the Numbers!

This was written during and after the first (HISTORIC) Presidential Debate. You’ve been warned. 🙂

I have a sniffing, loud guy in my ear, so I’m having a hard time concentrating, but how on earth is Terra two points ahead of Marilu?? This is a mystery to me. I think Marilu had a balance problem right at the beginning of her dance (she’s 64, after all), but that was a good dance. Then again, how did Laurie get a full three points more than her, lift and all?? And is that the first time Val’s ever actually been called on a lift? He’s done them before but I don’t remember him getting so nailed on it.

Anyway, I think Terra (and Laurie) did do a good job, I just don’t get the scoring two weeks in a row that insulates her. I’m afraid that once the people they want to leave, actually leave the scoring may change and that is fair to no one. It’s whiplash inducing for people who don’t know just how manipulated this show really is.  Read more..

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Part 2 PureDWTS Season 23 Week 3 Media And Interviews After Night One

Here are some fun interviews from Access Hollywood. If you missed our first Media and Interview post, see this link. Also, if you’d like more of Derek and Marilu, see Pure Derek Hough.

ETA: Here is Extra with the couples…

Also, there is a new interview at ET with Artem and Maureen. I’m having trouble getting it to play.

PureDWTS Season 23 Week 3 Media, Interviews, And Scores After Night One

What a fun night for Dancing With The Stars Season 23 Week 3. Short, but, fun. I’m looking forward to a longer show tonight. So, let’s review the scores again. I think I agree with these standings with an exception to Gleb and Jana. There scores should have been higher. I think James and Sharna deserved high scores as well.

Calvin Johnson Jr. and Lindsay Arnold (Viennese Waltz): 8-8-8-8 TOTAL: 32 (SAFE FROM ELIMINATION)
Laurie Hernandez and Val Chmerkovskiy (Tango): 7-8-8-8 TOTAL: 31 (SAFE FROM ELIMINATION)
Terra Jole and Sasha Farber (Viennese Waltz): 8-7-8-7 TOTAL: 30 (IN JEOPARDY)
James Hinchcliffe and Sharna Burgess (Cha Cha): 7-7-8-7 TOTAL: 29 (SAFE FROM ELIMINATION)
Marilu Henner and Derek Hough (Tango): 7-7-7-7 TOTAL: 28 (IN JEOPARDY)
Maureen McCormick and Artem Chigvintsev (Salsa): 7-7-7-7 TOTAL: 28 (SAFE FROM ELIMINATION)
Jana Kramer and Gleb Savchenko (Jive): 6-7-6-7 TOTAL: 26 (SAFE FROM ELIMINATION)
Ryan Lochte and Cheryl Burke (Cha Cha): 6-7-6-6 TOTAL: 25 (IN JEOPARDY)
Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and Allison Holker (Jive): 7-6-6-6 TOTAL: 25 (IN JEOPARDY)
Amber Rose & Maksim Chmerkovskiy (Salsa): 7-6-6-6 TOTAL 25 (IN JEOPARDY)
Vanilla Ice and Witney Carson (Paso): 6-6-5-6 TOTAL: 23 (SAFE FROM ELIMINATION – HEAD JUDGE’S DECISION
Rick Perry and Emma Slater (Paso): 6-6-5-6 TOTAL: 23 (IN JEOPARDY)

Now onto some media, interviews, bumpers from Al, and some red room coverage….

ABC7:

Glamour talked with a few of the couples. Be sure to read the link for more.

But back to the dancing, shall we? “I didn’t adapt too well to cha-cha,” revealed James. “I’m perfectly OK with making mistakes or not grasping something, but I’m not OK with not knowing why. We really went through a couple rough days trying to get to the bottom of what was holding me back. It was a disaster at camera-blocking and completely went off the rails again. Then, in between dress rehearsal and the live show, Sharna made a couple changes and made me feel way better about it. When we did it for the live show, it was the best run I had. To have it happen when immunity was on the line was not bad.”

Laurie Hernandez was literally bouncing around backstage, thrilled to have been granted immunity this week. Still, there was one part of the show she didn’t like: The lack of the judges commentary. “I don’t know what to fix for the next time,” said the fan favorite.

Laurie and partner Val Chmerkovskiy wound up one point behind first place finishers Calvin Johnson and Lindsay Arnold, and at this point in the competition, doesn’t count anyone out. “Everyone is competition [for me] on the show. I need to work extra hard to keep my spot, but so is everyone else.” Still, “every week exceeds my expectations,” said the longtime DWTS fan. “It’s incredible.”

PureDWTS Season 23, Week 3 – Power Rankings

Well that was possibly the most breakneck speed episode of DWTS we’ve ever witnessed – trying to watch, tweet, and take notes proved to be pretty difficult when they were moving as quickly as they were, so if these are a tad late, I apologize…I may have had to rewind and rewatch.

As much of a cluster as we predicted the face-off dances to be, on the whole I wasn’t too disappointed – my expectations were set pretty low, and tonight’s show maybe slightly exceeded them.  With the exception of a select few dances, technique seemed to be sacrificed in favor of showmanship across the board, and I really only saw 3 couples who seemed like they were 100% in-the-zone when performing…the rest seemed to eke by with varying degrees of bewilderment. It is what it is – when you’ve gotta cram 12 dances into 1 hour, you’re bound to make sacrifices somewhere.  I will say that I really enjoyed not hearing as much meaningless blathering from the judges 😀

Just to recap how voting/eliminations work this week – those who won their dance-offs are safe from elimination tomorrow; those who lost are at risk of getting eliminated. So the rankings should really only be 6 couples this week – but I do want to at least touch on the ones who won their dance-offs, so I’m gonna do things a bit differently tonight. First set of rankings is for those who are actually eligible to be eliminated – with the #6 position being the one I think  is most likely to get the boot. The second set is just a ranking of how well the winners did.  Also threw in a general ranking of the face-offs and how well/not well I think they worked out. Read more..

Ultrasound sales specialist by day, semi-knowledgeable DWTS fan by night...with a smattering of hair & makeup enthusiast, occasional model, baker, and crazy cat lady peppered in to make things REALLY interesting ;-) I might pee my pants in happiness if Donnie Wahlberg ever does DWTS - or if they ever use "Sunglasses at Night" as a paso doble.

Dancing with the Stars Season 23, Week 3 – LIVE BLOG!!

Site rules in are effect – don’t hit refresh every 2 minutes, make sure you’re not posting one-liners, etc. Instead of doing two live blogs, I will probably use this same blog for both nights, since tonight is only an hour.

So, I rewatched the last week’s shows over the weekend and something struck me – it wasn’t just Laurie (and Terra) that got no real critique and was possibly over scored. V.Ice made an obvious, huge, glaring error and not only was it not called out, but he got the exact same score from Bruno as freakin’ Marilu (with the gorgeous foxtrot)!! Len gave him a *7* with the huge glaring error – the same score he gave to James, Calvin and Babyface…and point higher than he gave Maureen. Just thought I would point out that the monkey business is more widespread than Laurie.

Also, my *feel* from watching the show is that there are a few couples getting short shrift when it comes to camera time and BTS packages. We saw LOTS from some couples, and relatively little from others. Note that I didn’t have a stopwatch out, but it seemed like we didn’t see much from Jana, Marilu, Maureen, Amber or Babyface. I didn’t think we saw overly much from Laurie. But I think we saw a lot from some of the others. One of these days I might actually get a stopwatch. Eh…probably not. 🙂 Read more..

Dancing With The Stars Season 23 Week 3 Pre-Show Photos And Blogs

Laurie Hernandez has written a new blog at USA Magazine. She writes of her week and gives a preview for tonight’s Tango.

I’m not nervous, but that’s because I’m not even thinking about it! I’m just trying to perfect our tango and I’m so excited for it. This is definitely a dance that’s something that I’m not used to, and it’s a step outside my comfort zone. It’s really hard to be all serious in the tango and not break into laughter. Tango is way more serious than a jive.

Sometimes Val will crack me up, and sometimes I’ll crack him up. It’s 50/50. Val tells me I need to work on making sure I don’t have spaghetti arms! My frame is always slightly off, so I need to make sure my arms don’t get too relaxed and flop around. But I’m working on it.

I’m really looking forward to this week because at the Olympics and in the previous dances that I did, they were very bubbly and they suited me really well. But now the tango’s super serious and I don’t think anyone’s seen that side of me before, so it’ll be exciting to see everyone’s reaction to it!

I’m also looking forward to what I’ll be wearing each week! Seeing what they do with my hair and my face, transforming every week, it’s pretty cool! This week I’ll be wearing something that’s black — and tango-appropriate. But tune in on Monday night to see what my finished look is!

More at USA Magazine.

Also, be watching for Jana and Terra to post their blogs at People. They should be posting them anytime. Here are some pre-show photos as well…

Almost showtime !! Excited to show you what we have been working on @dancingabc #dwts #teamholkerface @babyface -Allison
