DWTS Carrie Ann Inaba Interviewed About Her Judging Style, The Other Judges, And More

Parade.com has posted a new interview with Dancing With The Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba. At the link, you can read about her dancing days with Madonna (awww, The Girlie Show…one of my faves) and Jennifer Lopez, but, below you can read about her favorite contestants on Dancing With The Stars, the dynamic with her fellow judges, her judging style, and more. And while we’re on the subject: from one to five, how would you rate Carrie Ann’s judging style? I’ll meet you in comments with my take.

PARADE Who have been some of your favorite DWTS contestants over the years?
I like the comedians, because they’re fun to watch. Last year we had a great run with Bill Engvall. I love the underdogs.

What’s the dynamic like with your cojudges, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli?
We’re the three amigos! Len is old-school and regimented. Bruno and I look for artistic expression, but I love when people take risks. The only rule I don’t let the dancers bend is “no lifts.”

You are such a stickler for that! What’s the reason?
It was developed to make sure the older couples would have the same shot as the younger ones, because they’re just not as athletic. It keeps everybody on a level playing field. That’s why I stick to it.

What’s your least favorite dance style?
The Lindy Hop, because I don’t like to be thrown around. Salsa is probably one of my favorites, but it’s hard because I have a bad neck injury. I have spinal stenosis, and if I do the wrong move, I could be paralyzed. About seven years ago, I started having so much pain in my neck and back that I was losing my range of movement. So now I mostly do yoga and Pilates.

Dancing With The Stars Carrie Ann Inaba Battles Spinal Condition

I didn’t realize Carrie Ann has been battling a spinal condition, did you? It’s a condition that effects more than 400,000 Americans called “Spinal Stenosis” which is a narrowing of the spinal canal that ends up pinching spinal nerves. She’s ok now, but, it’s something she very much has to watch and still take care of.

“It was the middle of the season and I started to feel really, really stiff. I think it was two seasons ago and it just got worse and worse. I thought it was maybe because I was working out or maybe because maybe I wasn’t working out. I couldn’t figure out what it was, I tried everything and nothing helped,” said Inaba.

The diagnosis was spinal stenosis — a narrowing of the spinal canal that causes pinching on the nerves. She says she underwent surgery and steroid injections to relieve the pressure.

“And it’s pretty bad. I still have to watch it,” said Inaba.
