DWTS 14 Preliminary Power Rankings, Part II

Alright kids – so on Tuesday, I counted down my picks for the bottom half of this season, and heard some great feedback from you guys.  Now onto the top half…and my prediction for the winner! 🙂

6.) Sherri & Val – Let me remind you guys that these rankings are certainly NOT a ranking of who is and isn’t my favorite, and really just who I think has staying power and who doesn’t.  That said, Sherri gets on my last nerve – and I know I’m not alone.  That right there could be her biggest obstacle this season: just completely turning people off with her loud, in-you-face personality.  I noticed many of you commented that you either put Sherri’s media clips on mute or didn’t watch them at all because Sherri was so annoying – can you imagine if that’s what she’s going to be like every week on DWTS? 😯 If she manages to not turn off the viewing audience, she has a big advantage in that she gets more media exposure on a daily basis than any of the other cast members this season – she’s on a popular morning show on a major network.  And what demographic do you think that morning show really caters to? The same middle-aged female demographic that does the bulk of the viewing of DWTS.  Even if she can’t blatantly promote herself on The View for votes on DWTS, just the fact that she’s got daily exposure will keep her fresh in people’s minds.  She also seems to have had some…ahem…”preparation” prior to the start of this season.  She’s definitely moving better than the average celeb with 3 weeks of training already.  Will it really give her an edge in the long run? Probably not a huge one, as I’ve always been of the opinion that a naturally-talented dancer (like Jaleel or Roshon) will always have an easier time picking up dance moves & choreography than a better-prepared celeb that’s not so much of a natural mover. As for her pro – I think the jury’s still out on Val.  I don’t think we really got a good idea of what he’s capable of last season, so I think this time around will be the real test.  There’s also the potential vote splitting in play – that’s another factor that I’m not sure we got to see play out last season.  If both Val & Maks’ partners stick around for awhile, will vote splitting come into play? Could be an interesting variable in the competition.

5.) Donald & Peta – Seeing what I have of Donald in interviews & rehearsals so far, I daresay he might be the most determined celeb this season – he’s talking about reviewing rehearsal tapes, special diets, marathon practice sessions, the works! But the very thing that gives him an edge could also be his downfall: being overly determined.  As paradoxical as it sounds, being too determined can almost be as detrimental as not caring at all – I’ve found that couples who are desperate to win often reach a point where they put too much pressure on themselves and flame out…a good example is Aaron Carter.  Remember the post-rumba meltdown in the confessional? Too much pressure on yourself, dude. I think they can also turn viewers off, too – the stench of desperation is not a pleasant one, and viewers can totally tell when a celeb has stopped having fun and just entered the “wayyyyy too competitive” territory.  However, if he can strike a nice balance between being determined and also just enjoying himself, I think he could be a big force to be reckoned with – of the 3 other NFL players who did the show while they were currently playing for a team, the lowest any of them have placed is 4th.  Perhaps because they’re still in peak physical form? Athleticism has obviously proven to be a huge asset.  Then there’s the famous NFL fanbase – and in this case, he’s got a very unique one backing him: the “cheeseheads”, or Green Bay Packers fans.  A lot of people don’t know this, but the Packers are the only team in the NFL that is non-profit and publicly-owned – meaning that there isn’t some wealthy individual or corporate entity that claims ownership of the team.  As a result, the Packers have remained a very “small town”-type team, with a surprisingly large legion of fiercly loyal fans.  I’ve witnessed it firsthand, as many of the people in my office are originally from Wisconsin and the big talk of Donald waltzing away with the trophy began mere hours after the cast announcement (I actually have an official wager going with our GM…maybe I’ll go into further detail in another post ;-)).  In short – these are some WICKEDLY DEVOTED fans.  I would even say they could give the Steeler Nation a run for their money.  I’m definitely fascinated to see how it plays out 🙂 As for Peta…she, like Val, isn’t truly battle-tested, so we may finally get to see what she’s made of this season.  If Donald could strike the right balance of competitiveness & fun, if the cheeseheads can put together an efficient voting effort, and if Peta can create some great routines…these two could be a bit of a dark horse to win. DWTS Sherri Shepherd: The View And Dress Rehearsal Interview With Val Chmerkovskiy (Videos)

The View has released some backstage video of Sherri Shepherd dishing on her first rehearsals. She says she’s been rehearsing for “weeks”…”every day for five hours”…and even on Saturdays and Sundays (one eye raises up. I’m not saying a word). Val is diplomatic and says she’s absolutely wonderful even though she keeps stepping on his feet and hitting him in the face. She wants her dancing to speak for itself and her work put into it. More below on the dancing shoes she’s collected, the costuming (Courtney, you will love this part being she mentions the Niecy Nash promo dress), and lots more.

Adding: And below is a new dress rehearsal interview with her and Val. Let’s hope we get more of these soon with the other couples….

Kirstie Alley And Nancy Grace Give Dancing With The Stars Advice (Videos)

This is hilarious. In the first video from Extra, Kirstie Alley tells her thoughts on the cast for Dancing With The Stars Season 14. She loves how diverse and funny it is. She also tells of how Melissa came to watch her when she danced with Maks. She gives some advice to her and how to handle Maks since he can mess with one’s mind. Kirstie knows him best, doesn’t she? LOL!! She also has some advice for Maria…

Adding: And here’s Kirstie again on Access Hollywood with some more advice…

As for Nancy Grace, she was on The View today along with Sherri Shepherd and the gang. She had some advice for Sherri and Dancing With The Stars. She said, “Number one, show no fear”. Then she said, “Ignore all the haters!” Then third, “Have fun!” Great segment! You can see it here. More behind the scenes advice as well below (*cracking up)…

DWTS 14 – Make Your Team Name Suggestions!

Ok, so reminiscing about past team names and trying to come up with ones for this season’s couples in another thread just seemed to clarify for me “We need a separate post for this.” 🙂

It’s pretty self-explanatory – we wanna hear your suggestions for this season’s team names.  Keep in mind that the team names USUALLY are a sort of portmanteau of the celeb & the pro’s names (“Evanna” for Evan & Anna, “Florky” for Florence & Corky, “Kanenball” for Chelsea Kane & Mark Ballas), although they can also consist of nicknames (“Sugar & Spice” for Sugar Ray & Anna) or make no sense whatsoever (“Team Schmurgles” for Kyle & Lacey…still trying to figure that one out!).  And let’s avoid anything too vulgar – if you can’t say it on tv, there’s really not much of a point in saying it here 🙂

Heidi mentioned something about tweeting a link to this post to all of the teams to help them brainstorm their names – so make ’em good, guys, ’cause you never know if Maks, Kym, Tristan, etc. might be reading this! 😉 Keep in mind that this is the name that goes on the t-shirts that the couples tend to wear in rehearsal, around the studio, etc…so if they like your name, you’ll be seeing it everywhere.

Well for she & Tristan’s team name…how bout Gladys Knight & The Irish Pip? I know, point & laugh…it’s dumb. 😛

DWTS14 Cast – Hunches & Suspicions about Sherri Shepherd & Sam Champion

This is a post that Vogue & I decided to write after making some interesting observations on Twitter & TV 🙂 Keep in mind that no other news outlet has reported on these two as “casting rumors” this season, and that this is just Vogue and I postulating based on our observations and some gut feelings.  Since the casting rumors so far have been kinda sparse, we figured we’d go ahead and share. But read this with a grain of salt, if you will 😉

First up, we have Sherri Shepherd – and with that, I’m going to turn it over to Vogue:

Vogue: Thanks Courtney! Well, on the day Dance With Me Studios was filming for the Christmas and New Years Nancy Grace shows, @PulseCreativeNY at twitter was posting pictures promoting what was going down. She posted twitter photos of Maks, Val, Carson, Tristan, and Nancy to name just a few. In the mix and to my surprise, she also posted a picture of SHERRI SHEPHERD. At first I didn’t think anything of it, but, then I got to thinking of the recent rumors about Sherri dancing on Dancing With The Stars and for several seasons now. Sherri has expressed great interest, but, the timing was always wrong at the time. I quickly pmed Heidi about it to see if she was at twitter to see what she thought….especially being Sherri was clothed in work out clothes very similar to what Nancy Grace always wore for rehearsing. Sherri was also pictured with VAL! Now maybe this is something and maybe not since, as you know, Dance With Me Studios is where they teach people how to dance? The interesting part is, no sooner had @PulsecreativeNY posted that picture, she quickly took it down (kicks self for not taking screen shot in time). Now, my suspicions grew even more. lol Another interesting note is that Sherri currently follows Tony, Cheryl, Val, and Kirstie Alley….but, not Maks (atleast not since the last time I checked). She’s talked a lot at twitter about dieting and getting into shape…why? It’s like she’s preparing for something…is it…could it be….Dancing With The Stars? 💡 🙂 In covering all of our bases, we thought we better mention it.

Heidi adds:  Highly suspicious indeed and, as you might imagine, I asked Vogue what she would do next time she saw something “interesting” on twitter. SCREENSHOT. Immediately. 🙂 Before doing anything else.   In regard to Sherri herself – I vote NO. Nothing against Sherri, but if she’s already been spending time over at Dance with Me and is taking lessons?? Ha! And you though Derek has had advantages!!  CheaterCheaterCheater (sung in 12 year old voice)!! Who was the last contestant who took ballroom before DWTS?? Donny Osmond is the only one I know of. Didn’t think it was fair then, don’t think it would be fair now.  Of course, maybe Sherri just wants to get in shape without going on the show (what fun would that be?) and is doing it at Dance With Me. Who knows?? Well, we will in 30 days or so. 🙂

Now we move on to a guy who has only come to my attention as a possible contestant in the past few hours: Sam Champion.  For those of you who don’t know, Sam is the weather guy on Good Morning America, and is a HUGE fan of DWTS.  He usually live tweets Monday night’s performance shows, and even had a Monday night “Tweet-off” with Chris Cuomo (a former fellow GMA anchor who’s now with 20/20) last year – DWTS vs. Monday Night Football. In short – the guy obviously loves DWTS 🙂 Anyway! It was announced on GMA this morning that the cast would be announced on GMA the morning of Feb. 28…and who was the most excited out of all the anchors? Sam.  Who was off-camera, but made a point of jumping in the shot when Robin made the announcement? Sam.  Who was disappointed when Robin said he’d have to wait until Feb. 28 to hear the cast? Sam.  Who acted extra coy & fiddly during the whole segment? Sam.  If you haven’t yet, go watch the video Vogue posted – Sam acts unusually squirrely, and seems extremely excited to announce the cast.  Perhaps because he’s part of it…?  You also have to take into account that the cast announcements for the past 4 seasons of DWTS have all occured during The Bachelor or The Bachelorette – big primetime ratings draws.  Far bigger than the audience they’re likely to get from announcing the cast in a morning slot…so what would entice TPTB to change the timing, you ask? Perhaps the fact that one of the GMA anchors is going to be one of this season’s celebs? If you think about it, the reason they switched to announcing the cast during the The Bachelor in season 10 was because Jake, that season’s Bachelor, was going to be a part of it.  What’s to say they wouldn’t do the same this time around? To add to my growing suspicions, I was exchanging emails with my lovely mother this morning, and the minute I mentioned we thought someone from GMA was going to be part of the cast (all the anchors were acting kinda odd), her immediate response was “It’s Sam Champion, isn’t it?” Apparently Robin made a comment on the air recently about Sam being a good dancer – a comment that seemed a bit unusual, given the context.  Perhaps a bit of a hint from Robin? Draw your own conclusions, but Sam’s behavior this morning practically screamed “I’ve got a secret…I’m going to be on DWTS!!!!” to me 😉

Heidi:  As you know, I have to add my two cents to this whole thing, too. My response to Courtney this morning was “well, it’s either Sam or Robin” – based mainly on the fact that Robin is also a fan to the point that she’s had Maks teach her a few moves. 🙂  I say no to Robin (but not as much of a no as I do to Sherri and I won’t be mad if she’s on) and YES YES YES to Sam. I would love to see him on the show. Everyone on that show is a giant though, with Sam being about 6’3″ or so. But they’ve had taller. I think Sam is a ray of sunshine and he could fill the Ken doll slot if Derek isn’t around. 😉

So what do you guys think? Could we be seeing Sherri & Sam hoofing as contestants on season 14? 🙂

Tony Dovolani Dishes On Dancing With The Stars Season 14 In New Interview

Tony Dovolani made a special appearance at the 10th anniversary celebration of Eredi Pisano’s flagship store in New York City this week. In a new interview on the Red Carpet for the event, Tony says the premiere date for Season 14 of Dancing With The Stars is March 16th. He says he’s excited because he “doesn’t think nobody will know who the stars are this season.” He thinks it’s will be “interesting and one of the best seasons.” Tony is also asked who he’d like to be paired with and he says Jennifer Aniston, Oprah, and any of the girls from The View. They show the photo takes with he and his beautiful wife! I can’t embed the video, but, you can see it in full here.

Hmmm, we will see, Tony! I bet we know on some of the stars who will be dancing before March 16th. We will see. 🙂

DWTS 13 The Dancing Doesn’t Stop For Carson Kressley (Videos)

If you need more of Carson and Anna like I do, you can watch them on The View today below. The two do their “Moves Like Jagger” Cha Cha performance which will put a smile on your face again if you are interested in watching it.

Also, Carson talked with Ryan Seacrest on his radio show today. About his getting booted from Dancing With The Stars Carson said, “The moral of the story, don’t dress like a skittle!” LOL!! More below….

That’s not all. Carson has made a funny dancing sendup called “Dancing With Wolves 2 – How Costner Got His Groove Back” for the Hero Dog Awards which will air on the Hallmark Channel on Nov. 11th. The video (which has gone viral) “supports a cause near and dear to Carson’s heart: the protection and well-being of animals.” You can view it >>>>HERE. More details at PR Newswire.

ADDING: And if that wasn’t enough laughs from Carson for ya, be sure to see his “best Nancy Grace”…

Note: Carson along with Tristan and other Dancing With The Stars celebrities and dancers will guest on her show tonight (Friday). Be sure to tune in if interested.

Maks Chmerkovskiy And Hope Solo Talk Dancing With The Stars on The View (VIDEO)

Maks and Hope were guests on The View today! They talk of Hope’s soccer accomplishments! Then they talk of how Maks convinced her to do Dancing With The Stars. They also talk of how he’s taught her to walk in shoes as well as trying to help her become a dancer. They point blank ask Maks if he’s found the love of his life embarrassing him (why did they have to ask him that? I’d think twice now about doing The View next time if I were him). He says No and explains. Then Hope talks of her dancing saying how she is having posture issues. See why and more below. Watch this space later for a new Access Hollywood interview with these two as well. Read more..
