PureDWTS Season 23 Cast Rumors & Watchout: Another Racing Driver/James Hinchcliffe, Maybe?

One of the perks of being a lifelong resident of Indianapolis is that you usually have a pretty good ear to the ground when it comes to the goings-on down at the racetrack – I have at least 5 friends whose jobs are directly related to racing, and anything even remotely interesting that happens at the track usually makes it to the local news (even a dog getting loose on the track and delaying practice for 15 minutes…true story).

Occasionally, this connection pays off – as it did a couple weeks ago, when a friend who works very closely with the racing industry (I won’t give any more detail than that, lest I inadvertently get this friend in trouble) mentioned to me in passing that DWTS had been shopping around to cast another racing driver for season 23. Said friend mentioned that they were looking at Indycar, and the name that he/she kept hearing was James Hinchcliffe’s.  Given that Hinch was spotted in the audience this past season (see below), I don’t think it’s entirely unbelievable that the show might be angling to cast him.  Interestingly, James also favorited/responded to some interesting tweets asking if he would do the show – including one of mine:

Pretty cool to be @dancingabc tonight for the live show! Where are you @heliocastroneves !?! #Indycar #DWTS

For those who aren’t familiar with Indycar or are asking “So why would DWTS cast him?”, let me give you a crash course (no pun intended…ok, maybe a little) in Hinch: he’s Canadian, he’s basically the face of Indycar right now, he has a podcast, he has his own beer, he was on Family Feud recently, and the dude’s hilarious.  Charisma for DAYS. Oh, he also almost died in a crash last year and has made a recovery that is nothing short of miraculous. And with Indycar experiencing a resurgence in popularity in the past year, while NASCAR continues to decline in viewership, and the with the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 making the news? He’s got relevance. So to recap: big personality? Check. Relevance? Check. Amazing backstory? Check.  Even if this is the extent of his dance ability heading into the show, who the hell even cares? I’d probably laugh my ass off just listening to him read the phone book. 😛

Schedule-wise, it might be a bit of a challenge at first – the Indycar season doesn’t end until September 18 (in Sears Point, California…not too much of a trek from L.A.), so his partner might have to do some traveling with him prior to the start of the season and for the first week of the season; interestingly enough, the penultimate race of the Indycar season is on September 4 in Watkins Glen, New York…last year’s fall cast announcement was on September 2 on GMA, in NYC. See what I’m getting at here? 😉 For what it’s worth, the 2007 Indycar season didn’t end until September 9, and the season 5 cast announcement was on August 29…so Helio was in a similar position and had to rehearse with Julianne concurrently with the Indycar season. Ditto for the All-Star season – cast was announced on July 27, Indycar season didn’t end until September 15, season 15 premiered on September 24. So a bit of overlap between the seasons doesn’t necessarily negate the possibility of him doing the show. It’s also worth mentioning that Michael Waltrip had quite a bit of overlap with the NASCAR season when he did season 19.

If, for whatever reason, they opt not to cast Hinch (or he declines), there’s still some other casting possibilities within Indycar – you might remember that Tony Kanaan was a rumor a few years back, and nothing really came of it; he’s still very much an Indycar fan favorite, and recently appeared on both American Ninja Warrior and Family Feud. Also noteworthy? Alexander Rossi, the winner of the 100th running of the Indy 500 and the first rookie to win the Indy 500 since Helio won it back in 2001 – I could see the show running with that buzzworthy fact.  Granted, I personally just don’t find either to be as interesting a casting as Hinch (though TK comes close), but they’re options nonetheless.

So what do you guys think? Do you think Hinch or another Indycar driver would be a good get for this season? Who would you like to see him paired with, if he is cast?

Indy Champ Tony Kanaan Hasn’t Received A Call From DWTS, But, Still Might?

Awww, this will make Court sad. According to USA Today, Indy champ Tony Kanaan still hasn’t received a call to dance on Dancing With The Stars Season 17, and yet, it’s still possible he could get a call. Below is more….

“I might be getting a call, but I won’t know until right before they announce it,” Kanaan told USA TODAY Sports on Friday during a break in preparation for Sunday’s Grand Prix of Baltimore. “It’s so confidential. They want to keep the announcement a secret. They don’t like leaks, so I really don’t know.”

Kanaan said he won’t be disappointed if he doesn’t make the cut.

“To be honest, I won’t be unhappy if it doesn’t happen,” Kanaan said. “With all the things we have going on, I cannot afford to take off for however many weeks it would take. If they call me, I’ll do it, but right now it’s a busy time of my life.”

Sad, as I hoping he would dance too. Then again, maybe he might? All eyes on Wednesday, All, and be sure to read the full article at USA Today.

New Report Says Tony Kanaan Has Auditioned For Dancing With The Stars, Waiting For Word Back

USA Today Sports is reporting that Indy 500 winner Tony Kanaan has auditioned for Dancing With The Stars and he could find out tomorrow (Friday) if he makes the cut. Here is more….

Tony Kanaan is waiting to hear back from the show.

The reigning Indy 500 winner told the Indianapolis Star that he has auditioned to be on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” and could find out as soon as Friday whether or not he made next season’s cast of the popular show.

Don’t get too excited though because if you’ve been following the site, this isn’t the first time it’s been reported that Tony would find out on a “Friday” if he was going to dance. Courtney reported that he was waiting for an invitation and he’d find out something last Friday as you might remember. None the less, it seems this rumor isn’t going away anytime soon and many of us are glad for that. Bring on Tony TPTB!

PureDWTS Season 17 Cast Rumor – Tony Kanaan To Find Out Tomorrow if He’s In or Not

Sometimes I love being from Indianapolis…and this is one of them 🙂 Our local news outlets usually do a pretty good job of keeping up with the goings-on of the Indycar drivers during the off-season…and a few minutes ago, this article popped up on my Indystar app:

Indianapolis 500 winner Tony Kanaan is hoping for an invitation to go dancing. On television, no less.

The Brazilian IndyCar Series driver said he met with a “Dancing With the Stars” cast coordinator during last month’s visit to The ESPYs in Los Angeles. Kanaan told The Indianapolis Star he might know Friday if he’s been selected.

That doesn’t mean he’ll be able to share that news, however. The cast is scheduled to be announced on “Good Morning America.”

If selected, Kanaan would be the second IndyCar Series driver to appear on the reality show that draws some of the best ratings in television — often more than 20 million viewers a show.

We first reported on Tony as a rumor last month. I find it interesting that he offered up a specific date – tomorrow – as the day he would likely know whether he was in or out.  Maybe tomorrow is the day they finalize the cast? If so, hopefully the rumor mill starts spinning a little faster and we get some more names leaked.  Anywho, if he met with a casting director last month at the ESPY’s, I’d say Tony is looking like a pretty legit rumor – and he sounds pretty gung-ho about it.  I think they’d only benefit from casting him – he’s very current, he’s hugely popular with race fans, and he’s an athlete that’s not another football player 🙂 What do you guys think? Is it sounding like Tony might be a legit possibility for season 17?

Tony Kanaan “In Talks” To Do Dancing With The Stars Season 17?

Finally, a rumor for Dancing With The Stars Season 17! Indy 500 winner Tony Kanaan told Hollywood Life that he’s “in talks” to do Dancing With The Stars. Below is quote from the link.

Yeah, we’re in talks. Obviously, Hélio did such a great job representing the drivers and the Brazilians. Me being a Brazilian, I’m going to have a tough task but I’ll try. We’ll see. If it’s the right time, I’ll definitely accept it and go try it.

What do you think: Tony Kanaan for Dancing With The Stars Season 17? And if true, who do you think would make a good partner for him?

Seems like a cool guy to me? Bring him on. For more, see Hollywood Life.

Heidi: Works for me and the timing is about right. It’s Mid-July and the rehearsals will probably start late August/early September.
