PureDWTS DWTS Jr. Pro Profile – Hailey Bills

Age: 12
Height: 5’0″(Court’s best guess)
Hometown: Dallas, TX/Orem, UT (moved last year)
Home studio: Prodigy Dance and Performing Arts/Center Stage Performing Arts
Dance styles: ballroom/Latin, contemporary, hip-hop, ballet, jazz, tap
How you might know her: She’s Jenna’s niece.
Other accolades: 2017 Female Mini Best Dancer at The Dance Awards
Pro mentor: Jenna Johnson
Celeb partner: Tripp Palin

Competing in Latin with her partner, Blake Fox:

Doing an edgy, contemporary/jazz/Latin fusion to “Billie Jean” at The Dance Awards earlier this year:

Edgy contemporary duet with Joziah German last year:

Doing some hip-hop with Rylee & Brightyn:

And the contemporary routine that won her Mini Best Dancer at TDA last year:

Court’s thoughts: I think Hailey might be the best technician of the junior pro girls – she seems to have a really good understanding of what her body’s supposed to be doing when she’s dancing, and she does it precisely. The one thing I think she hasn’t quite honed perfectly yet is her stage presence – she’s a great dancer, but I do see my attention wandering from time to time when I’m watching her as her presence in each dance seems to waver. She reminds me a bit of SYTYCD-era Lindsay: extremely strong technician, but maybe not quite as charismatic as some of her contemporaries (for Lindsay, it was Witney; for Hailey, I think it’s Brightyn & Rylee).  But the good news is that she’s only 12, and already a great dancer – the stage presence will come with time.

PureDWTS Season 27, Week 1: Who’s Dancing What, And When?

Sorry I’ve been lax, guys – with Heidi currently on vacay, and me just trying to stay on top of work-work and schoolwork, it’s getting hard to keep up. Here’s the songs and dances, per the press release – and here’s our seasonal disclaimer: these are just in alphabetical order unless otherwise indicated, and we probably won’t start hearing about running order until after camera blocking on Sunday. Will also post the voting numbers if they happen to get posted somewhere between now and the show.

So I apparently missed this part in my initial post: the couples are doing the same dance both Monday AND Tuesday night, but to different songs…? No idea if it’s literally the same choreography, just done to different songs, or what – but this kooky.

Other deets from the press release? The whole cast of DWTS Juniors will be there live for the announcement on Tuesday (Sept. 25), which we already knew; and Kenzie Ziegler (Juniors contestant and now an apparent pop star…?) is going to be singing.

Thoughts: seems like they might be pitting the two biggest ability ringers (Tinashe & Alexis) against each other early on, giving them the same dance; I probably would have switched Bobby & Evanna’s dances for week one – given her jive and him foxtrot; seems like the older/less-skilled set got ballroom dances in week one. Juan Pablo getting salsa seems strategic.

Update #1, 9/23/18, 5:30 PM EST: Thanks to Zoe for pointing this out – someone caught a glimpse of the running order for tomorrow night in the background of somebody’s Instagram story. No clue if they’re going off the same running order on Tuesday night or not. In the three key positions, we have Mary Lou & Sasha (first), Juan & Cheryl (top of the 2nd hour), and DeMarcus & Lindsay (last) – that leads me to believe all three have very crowd-pleasing routines that viewers will remember. They seem to have loaded the back half of the show with good dancers (Alexis, Tinashe) and demographic favorites (John, Nancy, Joe, DeMarcus). I don’t think running order has done Nikki any favors, as she is both injured and now has to dance after someone doing the same dance she is, and he’s apparently very, very good. The potentially-worrisome spots are 2nd-5th, and I find it interesting that they’ve stuck two of the contestants that are likely to appeal more towards younger viewers there – Milo & Evanna.  I think they ought to be ok this week, but if they continue to show up there, I think it’s going to be a problem. I think putting Nancy & Joe back-to-back and doing the same dance is only to play up the Val vs. Jenna “rivalry”, which is already making me roll my eyes.

Update #2, 9/23/18, 7:02 PM EST: Was able to deduce the voting numbers once Bobby & Milo posted theirs – looks like it’s just straight alphabetical order again.  Source also confirmed that the dances on night #2 are completely new: same style of dance, but different choreo and different song.  Now call me crazy, but I actually prefer this to having them do two completely different styles in week 1 – at the very least, they don’t have to learn new timing or technique, and the dances will likely be similar; and if they maybe don’t do so hot on night #1, they can polish whatever issues they might have had and give it another shot on night #2. Still a bit nuts to have them doing 2 dances in week 1, but it’s better than two completely different dance styles…

PureDWTS Season 27 – DWTS Juniors Couples Announced on Sept. 25 Show

We had kinda guessed that this is how the cast announcement for Juniors would go down, but Rylee’s latest Instagram post confirmed it:

Not sure yet if all of the couples will be there to perform on the show (quite a few of the junior pros/celebs aren’t L.A. locals, so it could be a bit of a mess logistically to have them all there), but they will all get announced that day.  Of course, if you don’t want to wait, you can always check out our spoiler posts – cast list here and other spoiler-y things here 😉

UPDATE, 9/14/2018, 11:19 AM EST: Source confirms that the entire Juniors cast will be present for the announcement during the Sept. 25 show. Sounds like they might be performing.

PureDWTS DWTS Season 27/Juniors Season 1 – An Update About the Cast Announcement

So I’ve been getting a lot of questions about when they’re going to announce the celebs for Juniors – initially, I was told it was going to happen closer to the cast announcement for the regular season, which made me wonder if they were just going to do one big cast announcement on GMA for both Juniors and season 27.  However, source has now heard that the cast announcement for Juniors is “going to coincide with the premiere of season 27” – which makes me wonder if the results show we’re getting on 9/25, per Kristyn, is going to double as the cast announcement for Juniors, which premieres roughly 2 weeks later. I have no other info other than that – no idea if the Junior celebs and their partners will be there for the show (seems like it could be a bit of a logistical nightmare), or if they’re just going to be showing something pre-taped, but I’ve got a gut feeling that whatever it is, it’s probably going to happen during the 9/25 results show.

As for the regular season – since everything has basically gotten pushed back a week due to the premiere being a week later than usual, I’m guessing we get a cast announcement sometime between 9/4 and 9/12.  Pros were due to start meeting their partners this week, so I’m leaning more towards the week of 9/10 for the cast announcement. Notice the use of the words “I’m guessing” and “I’m leaning more towards” – this is just my educated opinion, not fact, so I better not hear anyone saying “Well Courtney says the cast announcement is the week of the 10th” or “Courtney says Juniors celebs are getting announced during the results show!” This fandom has developed a bit of a fake news problem as of late, so please don’t contribute to it by misquoting. I’d rather not burn out on both Juniors and regular DWTS before the seasons have even started 😉

Radar Online Reports that Bristol Palin’s Son OUT on Night One of DWTS Juniors

Yep, we can confirm that Radar Online got it right. Quite surprising considering that Jenna is pretty darn popular with the judges. If you know what I mean. 🙂

Bristol Palin’s son Tripp’s reality TV breakout is short-lived! RadarOnline.com can exclusively reveal the 9-year-old was kicked off Dancing With the Stars: Juniors on night one.

Apparently, the kid was miserable. But ya know, DWTS is some hard work. And I’ll leave it at that until I see the show.

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

PureDWTS Season 27 Cast Rumors & Watchout: Could Sarah Michelle Gellar Be Getting Ready to Dance?

Ok, so this hasn’t been one that’s been widely reported – and to my knowledge, I think I was the only one mentioning on Twitter/here that Sarah Michelle Gellar had attended a few tapings back in season 25, and was apparently being courted by producers.  I vaguely remember someone else mentioning that Jordan seemed like he had been pulling a few strings to try and get her to join, and I see that Sarah also follows Alfonso (who is basically the de facto DWTS celeb recruiter) and his wife on Insta.  It was basically just wishful thinking and a gut feeling…until Zoe (@ptxdwts on Twitter) pointed this out to me:

So Sarah showed up to a DWTS Junior taping…now it seems like this rumor might have some legs.  I’d love to see her on the show – she’s got the nostalgia factor, she’s low-drama, she looks FANTASTIC…I think she’d be a great partner for Artem or Alan, or even Brandon.  What do you guys think?

PureDWTS DWTS Junior Season 1 – Junior Pros & Mentors Start Teasing Pix of Their Celeb Partners on Instagram

I’m admittedly late on this, but that’s what you get when things at my office are falling apart and I’m finishing up final projects for my econ & marketing classes 😛 The junior pros and mentors have started dropping hints on their celeb partners on Instagram – here’s a few, but if you want our spoiler list, go here. From the vibe I’ve gotten from sources, it seems like the junior celeb announcement is going to happen pretty close to the celeb announcement for the regular season – which if I had to guess (and this is a GUESS, don’t quote me) is probably going to be Sept. 4 or 5th. If it were me, I’d probably just make one big announcement, all at once, in order to maximize cross-promotion of Junior & regular DWTS. I’d start keeping pretty close tabs on Instagram next week…I’d imagine the regular pros are going to start meeting their celeb partners within the next week or two.

Can you guess who my partner is? 🤩🤔🤫😍 @dwtsjuniors #dwtsjuniors

PureDWTS Season 27 – PRO WATCH!!!

After what seems like FOREVER since we’ve had a true, full-length season (not sure about you, but All-Athletes barely felt like a blip on our radar, and Juniors doesn’t quite feel real yet since it’s not airing until October), the fall pre-season is finally upon us 🙂

First, time to do a bit of “pro roll call”: Lindsay, Witney, Emma, Jenna, Cheryl, Hayley, Artem, Gleb, Keo, Sasha, Alan, & Brandon are all serving as mentors on DWTS Junior, which tends to increase their odds of being pros on the fall season, from where I sit (since there’s going to be a good deal of cross-promotion between DWTS/DWTS Jr.); Val is now a judge on DWTS Junior, which makes me wonder if his days as a regular pro are over; Sharna was curiously absent from the list of pros involved in Juniors, and seems to have thrown herself headlong into other ventures, which for me puts her role as a pro in question; and we haven’t really seen Peta or Maks involved in DWTS since their fairly unremarkable run as pros last fall. Keep in mind – fall season typically has (13) couples, and with this fall season being only nine weeks long (as opposed to the standard 10 or 11 weeks) due to the Primetime Emmy’s on Sept. 17, we may end up seeing fewer couples than that. If you are one of the ones hoping to see Hayley and/or Brandon get a shot at being a pro, just know that it means one of the older pros (perhaps Peta, Sharna, Val, or Maks) has to sit this one out. There is not an unlimited number of pro spots, unfortunately.

As for the “old guard” – pros from the days of yore that may or may not pop in for season-long encore run – with the exception of Cheryl, I don’t think we’ll being seeing the return of any alums. Derek is a hard “no”, due to his involvement with World of Dance; and with Mark’s new Broadway gig (and the fact that he seemed pretty done with DWTS when asked about it recently) I doubt we see him back, either. Kym, Edyta, & Anna all have young kids; and  Lacey, like Mark, seems to be pretty done with DWTS, too. Karina and Tony seem to be keeping busy with judging and other events, but might be willing to return if asked – I just don’t see them getting asked, unfortunately. It’s now been two years since we last saw Allison as a pro, so barring extraordinary circumstances, I’d say she’s out; and unless someone (foolishly) requests Louis as a partner, I think he’ll have plenty of time to bitterly shade the current pros on Twitter 😉

So where does that leave us? I will say I’d be genuinely SHOCKED if Lindsay, Witney, Emma, Jenna, Cheryl, Artem, Gleb, Keo, & Alan didn’t get pro spots; I think Sasha is probably going to get a spot, but there always seems to be that degree of uncertainty due to his height (which is dumb, since he is the same height as Mark, and they always managed to find partners for Mark).  I think the remaining 2-3 spots (depending on the number of couples this fall, and how many female/male celebs they get) could go to any combination of Hayley, Sharna, Peta, Val, Maks, and Brandon, depending on whether the Chmerkovskiy faction and/or Sharna opts to return as pros or not.

As of right now (11-Aug, 7ish PM EST) we don’t have a date for the pro announcement or cast announcement, but source seems to think that the cast announcement for Juniors will occur around the same time as the one for the regular season…perhaps one massive GMA event???

UPDATE, 8/28, 9:11 AM EST: So apparently GMA is announcing the pros today, without much previous fanfare.  Big deal being made about Jenna & Val’s engagement, so I guess we know who’s gonna be the ones getting promoted this season. On a happier note – looks like Brandon is getting a shot as a pro after a really strong showing as a mentor on DWTS Junior. Cheryl’s also back, which makes me think Hayley’s chances at a pro spot just got slimmer. Only 8 pros have been announced so far…

Update 2: Full list posted at ABC.com. No big surprises here – but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t curious to see how Val’s stint as a Juniors judge changes the dynamic between he and the other pros on the regular season. I’d say this is more than likely the full list – we’ve got our 13 pros.  So I better not hear any “but maybe there’s a surprise 14th couple!!!” chatter…

Update #3, 8/30/18, 3:54 PM EST: So let’s talk troupe.  Source is fairly certain that all three girls will be back – makes sense, since Hayley served as a Juniors mentor over the summer, and Morgan was working a lot with the Junior troupe. It also looks like Artur will be back, as he was looking on Facebook for an apartment to sublet in LA as of last Friday 😛 It looks like there’s going to be at least (1) new guy, though…any guesses on who?

PureDWTS DWTS Junior Pro Profile – Brightyn Brems

Age: 12
Height: 4’11” (Court’s best guess)
Hometown: Lehi, UT
Home studio: Center Stage Performing Arts
Dance style: cross-trained in ballroom/Latin, hip-hop, jazz, tap, contemporary, and gymnastics
How you might know her: part of the 801 Squad from season 1 of World of Dance; auditioned for So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation
Other accolades: 2017 TDA Female Mini Best Dancer
Pro mentor: Cheryl Burke
Celeb partner: Mandla Morris

Who better to tell you about Brightyn, than Brightyn herself? 🙂

Not sure if this actually aired on the show or not, but here was 801 Squad’s performance on WOD in season 1 – Brightyn is front & center for a good portion of the dance (you can also catch a quick glimpse of junior troupe member Makeila Lawrence):

Brightyn doing a very limber solo at The Dance Awards last year:

Competing in Latin:

And doing some edgy contemporary:

Court’s thoughts: Brightyn looks like a mini-Witney to me 🙂 And she’s got the charisma and talent to match! Contemporary seems to be her bread & butter, but she is incredibly well-trained in Latin as well.  She strikes me as one of the more mature junior pros, so I’m just hoping she can strike a balance between working hard and having fun. She’s got star quality, for sure!

PureDWTS DWTS Junior Pro Profile – JT Church

Age: 12
Height: 4’9″ (Court’s best guess – he’s taller than Artyon, but still one of the shorter junior pros)
Hometown: Chandler, AZ
Home studio: Club Dance Studio
Dance styles: jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, ballroom/Latin, gymnastics
How you might know him: He was the runner-up on So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation; Lip Sync Battle Shorties
Other accolades: Mini Male Best Dancer at the 2017 Las Vegas Dance Awards
Pro mentor: Alan Bersten
Celeb partner: Sky Brown

A compilation of all of JT’s duets & solos while he was on SYTYCD:

Dancing a duet at the Radix Nationals this year:

Serving us some “Cake By The Ocean” on Lip Sync Battle Shorties:

Getting “In His Feelings” doing this hip-hop combo:

And some cha-cha fun with Lacey:

Court’s thoughts: Another extraordinarily well-rounded and energetic kid – I honestly don’t think there’s a single weak link in the junior pros, guys; most of these kids are cross-trained better than a good chunk of the adult pros. I think Jake’s got everything he needs to do well on the show – the technique, the showmanship, the versatility; my only concern (and this is an itty-bitty one, no pun intended) is that his small stature/build may mean his partner has an inch or two on him, and he may not yet have the upper-body strength for lifts – it just might limit he & Sky a bit in terms of variety in their routines, but as I mentioned – this is a very small concern. I’m really having to stretch to find issues with these junior pros, they’re that good 😉
