Randall Christensen, Former DWTS Costume Designer, Passes Away

Got the most heartbreaking email yesterday from Randall’s publicist, letting me know of his passing 🙁 For those who maybe weren’t around in the earlier years of the show, Randall was the main costume designers for seasons 2-13 of the show, and created some of the most memorable costumes in the history of the show (think Toni Braxton’s Marie Antoinette gown, Nicole Scherzinger’s Prince getup, Derek & Joanna Krupa’s futuristic paso doble outfits).  He was also a great friend of ours here at Pure, and was gracious enough to grant us several interviews over the years, giving us the behind-the-scenes story of some of the costumes.  Per his publicist, Randall had been courageously (but quietly) battling carcinoma for several years. I had always wondered why he had parted ways with the show – did he quit to pursue other opportunities? Was he let go? But I never wanted to offend him or hurt his feelings by asking…now I understand that he was putting his health first. Those of us here at Pure send our deepest condolences and warmest prayers to his family and friends during this difficult time.

Emmy-winning costume designer, Randall Christensen died Sunday, June 16 at the age of 60. Randall
was best known for his dazzling work on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars for 11 seasons. Mr. Christensen
had been struggling with carcinoid cancer for the past several years.
He was born October 7, 1958 in Camden, South Carolina and was a recent resident of Long Beach,
California. Mr. Christensen is survived by his husband, opera singer, Aaron Ball, mother Joan, and
siblings Steven (Kay), Bruce, Dana (Patti), and Valerie Kirkley. He is preceded in death by his father
Hayward and brother Mark.
Winner of the 2006 Emmy Award for Outstanding Costumes for a Variety or Music Program (Dancing
with the Stars) and four-time nominee for the Costume Designers Guild Award for Outstanding
Contemporary Television Series (Dancing with the Stars), South Carolina-born costume designer Randall
Christensen delighted performers and audiences alike around the world with his transformative and
iconographic dance and skate costumes and had been proclaimed ‘the next Bob Mackie’ by designer
Bob Mackie himself.
In addition to designing his award-winning creations for Dancing with the Stars for eleven seasons,
Christensen’s stunning gowns can be seen worn by Jennifer Lopez in the film Shall We Dance (2004) and
Mary Steenburgen in the film Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing & Charm School (2005). Mr.
Christensen’s work can also be seen in the films Take the Lead starring Antonio Banderas (2006), Dance
with Me (1998) with Vanessa Williams, and on television in 20th Century Fox’s award-winning So You
Think You Can Dance and TLC Network’s Ballroom Bootcamp.
Christensen’s company, Randall Designs, has been a leader in the competitive dance and skate costume
industry since 1986 and is based in Phoenix, AZ Christensen also created costumes for Crystal Cruises
and Princess Cruises. Much in demand the world over for his ballroom dance costumes, Christensen wa
also the designer of choice for the world’s top competitive ice skaters. Christensen’s exquisite designs
for Olympic champions Charlie White and Meryl Davies during the 2014 XXII Olympic Winter Games in
Sochi received global notice and praise when White and Davis became the first Americans to win the
Olympic gold medal for ice dancing.
Memorial services will be Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 2:00pm at Brentwood Presbyterian Church, Los
Angeles. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Best Friends Animal Society
at www.bestfriends.org.

More DWTS Season 28 Watch Outs (Bigger Celebs?), Secret Format Changes, And More

Will there be bigger celebrities for Dancing With The Stars Season 28? According to Deadline, this is a huge possibility. More below including names Jennifer Love Hewitt and Katelyn Ohasi being thrown out there. Also, their could be some format changes….

“We have been pitched some really fun format changes for Dancing with the Stars by the executive producers but right now they are top secret. [Reality chief] Rob Mills and I had a meeting with them a couple of months ago and got very excited about some of the new ideas that they were talking about to freshen up the format. It’s still the show that audience knows and loves but they’ve got some good ideas in terms of how to surprise people in new ways,” she said.

Burke, speaking at the Disney press upfronts event, added that it was “going after bigger stars than we have in a long time” as the series returns on Monday nights between 8pm and 10pm. This comes after radio host Bobby Bones won the last season, beating the likes of Harry Potter alum Evanna Lynch, Fuller House‘s Juan Pablo Di Pace and former Dukes of Hazzard star John Schneider to the top prize.

It will unlikely have trouble finding top names; I Know What You Did Last Summer star Jennifer Love Hewitt recently revealed that she would be interested in appearing and gymnast and viral sensation Katelyn Ohasi said she had been in talks to join.

The ABC chief also said that resting the show, which is based on BBC format Strictly Come Dancing, should have a positive impact. “Resting the show does help us focus on talent and we will go after people that we think will be the strongest. That has been a gift and the producers are chomping at the bit to bring it back next fall,” she added.

More at Deadline. Personally, I never cared about “big names. I just want good dancing and great and creative choreography.

DWTS Officially Renewed for One More Season

According to ET, DWTS got a one season renewal. That’s not to say that it won’t be back in 2020…just that the producers are taking it one season at a time these days. There doesn’t appear to be any word on Juniors. Not in this article anyway. If it’s pushed to next January/February like Courtney suggested, then it would probably be too soon to announce it yet.

The Bachelor and Dancing With the Stars have both been officially renewed for new seasons at the network, ABC announced Friday.

The Bachelor, which is coming off a strong season with Colton Underwood, is returning for a 24th installment, while the celebrity dance competition series will be back for a 28th cycle

After opting to forego a spring season of DWTS, a show that has long aired two cycles per year, ABC Entertainment President Karey Burkeconfirmed in February at the Television Critics Association winter press tour that the reality competition would “definitely be returning in the fall.”

It remains unclear whether DWTS will return to its twice-a-year format, though the one-season renewal Friday seems to hint that may not happen.

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

DWTS Season 28 Watch Out: Robert Irwin Wants To Dance!!

How about Robert Irwin for Dancing With The Stars Season 28? ET is reporting he’d like to dance. I say bring him on!!! I would love this!!! Thanks to Vin for bringing this news to our attention!

While Robert Irwin, son of the late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, is already following in his father’s footsteps as a nature conservationist, it sounds like he might also be interested in following his sister, Bindi, to the Dancing With the Stars stage.

“I’m not as graceful as Bindi, let’s just say that. I’m not very graceful,” Robert told ET’s Lauren Zima at this year’s Steve Irwin Gala at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills on Saturday. “[But] I’d give it a go.

Bindi took home the coveted Mirrorball trophy in November 2015 after a season full of jaw-dropping dances alongside her partner, Derek Hough.

Robert was only 11 at the time, but now that the young TV personality and animal expert has gotten a bit older, there are a lot of fans who’d love to see him vie for the trophy himself.

More at ET.

How about Natasha Bure For Dancing with the Stars Season 28??

How about Natasha Bure For Dancing with the Stars Season 28? I think this would be a cool idea especially if she were to be paired with Mark Ballas…

Candace Cameron Bure‘s daughter Natasha Bure is following in her mother’s footsteps into acting, but the 20-year-old hopes to mimic her mother in another way as well: She wants to go on “Dancing with the Stars.”

“I would love to do ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ I think it would be the coolest thing. I’m so competitive,” Natasha told “Entertainment Tonight” (watch below).

Dancing With The Stars Season 28 To Officially Return In The Fall, Future Seasons In Talks

According to People, Dancing With The Stars will officially be back for a Fall Season. Here is a take from the link where ABC Entertainment president, Karey Burke, mentions it at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour on Tuesday….

During the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour on Tuesday, ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke announced that the reality dance competition series will be returning for season 28.

“I can confirm that it will definitely be returning in the fall,” Burke told reporters.

Although DWTS has occasionally aired two seasons annually — spring and fall — PEOPLE confirmed in December that the long-running ABC show would be taking a hiatus and skipping a spring cycle like 2018’s Athletes mini-season.

That’s not all, according to Burke via TV Line, Dancing With The Stars could be back for a Spring season afterwards. Read on….

Newly-installed Alphabet entertainment president Karey Burke addressed the speculation Tuesday at the Television Critics Assoc. winter press tour, declaring unequivocally that the show will “definitely be returning in the fall.” Regarding the decision to skip a spring cycle for the first time in franchise history, Burke deflected, “That decision was made before I got here.”

Having skipped this spring outright and aired an abbreviated all-athletes edition a year ago, could DWTS ever be a proper twice-a-year show again? “We’re in conversations about that,” Burke told TVLine. “They’re coming in soon to talk about their plans for the fall, and we’ll discuss it then.”

Be sure to read the links for more. It’s going to be interesting to see how this all plays out. The ratings for the Fall season will probably determine it’s future. Let us know what you think in comments.
