Dancing with the Stars Season 19, Week 3 – Who’s Dancing What….and When? (Song Spoilers)
This week, as people who are site members might be aware, we have a lot of info, but a lot of it isn’t really clear yet. 🙂 It’s still a work in progress. Here’s the parts we’re fairly sure of:
ETA: I totally called this one on Twitter yesterday – Singing in the Rain by Derek Hough? Perfect. 🙂 Now is it that actual song? I’m assuming yes.
ETA2: The subtle-as-a-sledgehammer hints continue at the DancingABC Instagram Mike’s Twitter, as he pretty much confirms he’s gonna be Robin Hood.
ETA3: So, Len said during this past Monday’s show that Alfonso was doing V.Waltz, but his wife says he’s doing quickstep.
ETA4: We’re kinda doubting that Alfonso’s wife is right…
ETA5: …and I’m sure you can see why now 😛 No clue what the hell he & Witney are gonna do to this song…I’ve listened to it at least 10 times, and cannot find any strong semblance of a foxtrot or quickstep rhythm. It’s a tad fast for a foxtrot, but not even enough for quickstep…who knows. But I’m sure whatever it is – Alfonso’s gonna put on a helluva show 😎 Looks like Jonathan’s Mean Girls song didn’t clear so he ended up with his 2nd choice. I have to wonder if they’re bending the rules a bit and going with the Amy Winehouse version, though, as the Beyonce version is rather slow. Looks like “Pour Some Sugar on Me” was a safety song – but part of me kinda wants to see the pros dance to it instead 😉 And a different source confirmed that Bethany & Derek’s dance style is jazz – with quite a bit of tap influence 😉 -Court-
ETA6: ZOMG PLOT TWIST LOLZ!!!! 😯 Apparently “I Feel Pretty” is now off the table – and Vajanel has been seen rehearsing to “America” instead. Wondering if Val may have jumped the gun on confirming they had cleared “I Feel Pretty” – either that, or “I Feel Pretty” wasn’t working out, and they asked to switch songs (after switching dances already, mind you). Food for thought – draw your own conclusions. Confirmed Betsey & Alfonso’s dances – Tony is apparently doing some gorgeous lifts with Betsey, so they do, indeed, have contemporary; and Alfonso’s old lady was right – he is doing quickstep. How? I’m not sure…but I’m certainly intrigued. 🙂
ETA7: We have a more detailed explanation of what went down with West Side Story-gate – wanna hear it? Looka hurr.
ETA8: We can always rely on Cheryl to share her dance order…see below. 🙂
ETA9: Vogue here and scroll below to see a new “Movie Night” commercial. Here’s to tonight!
ETA10: Probably the last update before showtime – and before Heidi’s discussion post goes live in less than 10 minutes (complete with spoilers about next week’s show!) Apparently Randy & Karina are opening the show – AGAIN – and Betsey & Tony might be going 3rd…they said they are on Instagram, but Michael’s racing team also tweeted that he’s going 3rd. So….who knows. Enjoy the show, kids 😎

Dancing 6th
Vote: 1-800-868-3402
Sadie and Mark – Viennese waltz (song: “Married Life” , from Up)
Vote: 1-800-868-3411
And this is info that we have, but we don’t know who it goes with:
Rock of Ages (song: “Pour Some Sugar on Me” by Def Leppard) – samba
ETA: Derek says their movie is “super iconic, especially for dance, it doesn’t usually clear.” He said none of his former partners (or his sister) have been in it and it’s an “older film. A Classic.” I believe he said it’s older than Dirty Dancing, but I would have to listen to the interview again.
ETA2: We know that “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” is on the list but couldn’t figure out what movie it’s from until one of our members mentioned Guardians of the Galaxy. Also keep in mind that not all of the songs might get used…
ETA3: Given how coy Antonio & Cheryl acted when asked about Guardians of the Galaxy in their interview with George, and after talking it over with Deep Throat – we feel pretty confident that Antonio has “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”. Now the question is: will he don a tree suit to channel Groot, while Cheryl dresses up as the squirrel? 😛 Also possibly worth noting: Jonathan’s interview is only somewhat incoherent, but it sounds like they were trying to clear a song for him from Mean Girls, with a song from a movie with “party scenes” as a backup. Gatsby, perhaps? -Court-
I feel pretty ? please no faux kissing val and janel I hope its an upbeat number seeing as she is trained in it lol I like some of the songs next week if they go with the right dances .
I would have liked “I Feel Pretty” better as a Viennese Waltz … and if it was Bethany and Derek doing it. But okaaaay. I’m hoping they have Contemporary :X
I LOVE “Up”. I can’t wait to see Sadie and Mark dance to it. Guessing they have “Ellie’s Theme” since it sounds very Viennese Waltz-like.
I’m gonna take a wild guess and say Lea and Artem’s song is “Back in Time”.
Wow I’m thrilled about Back to Black, that version is epic. Praying it goes to someone that can do it justice. Based on what’s already “filled in” so to speak that pretty much just leaves Derek/Bethany. Or could be ok with Allison/Jonathan I guess. Also excited for the paso and for Bryan Adams! Next week is looking good.
Lea and back to the future……I think I could take a good educated guess (one of my fav movies of all time). I really would have preferred them to give betsey the song that they gave janel but betsey got a good one hopefully
Also I feel like Derek and Bethany got the ghost song. He said it was older and iconic so that song fits the bill
@Vin- he said it was iconic, especially for dance. So my guess would be that they have more of a dance film rather than Ghost.
So Derek said it was “super iconic” movie especially for dance ?? Ghost isn’t a dance movie–the interview I saw he didn’t say anything about it being “Older than DD” he just said it was an older movie, a classic especially to dance.
Note that we don’t have 11 songs listed….
And Ghost is not an “older movie” IMO. Singing in the Rain…now that’s an older movie that is iconic in dance. He also said it doesn’t normally clear…and haven’t they used Unchained Melody before??
So excited about Derek’s movie pick. Wow, I would be in heaven watching Derek dance to “Singing in the Rain.”
singing in the rain would be cool, Derek reminds me of gene Kelly 🙂
Hasn’t Derek met Gene Kelly’s widow, Patricia?
based on your intel PH, i think Bethany and Derek could have The Great Gatsby tango
So i have seen singing in the rain maybe twice in its entirety….I know crazy right. Might have to run off to best buy before next Monday so I watch it.
Singing in the rain does not seem to fit VW that well. I also don’t understand the music and all the styles so maybe I am off on that.
Strictly come Dancing has used Unchained Melody, Singing in the Rain, Back to Black (Amy Winehouse R.I.P) version and Everything I Do before. Looking forward to Sadie and Tommy for differing reasons
At first I thought of Saturday Night Fever for Derek and Bethany, but I like the idea of Singing In The Rain better. Actually I’d love for it to be Dancing In The Dark from The Band Wagon. Man, what a magical dance that is.
I’m a big West Side Story geek so I was excited to read that a song from it was going to be included. I was hoping for Cool or the jazzy sounding song at the beginning of the gym dance scene, but no, it has to be my least favorite WSS song. With my least favorite couple no less. Boo!
I’m placing my bets Lea will be dancing to “Power Of Love” from Back to The Future. I don’t really like how they have jazzes this early in the season. Wasn’t Janel trained in jazz? She’ll probably do good though hopefully they don’t start giving out 10’s this early. Plus I want the first 10 to be given to Alfonso. Glad to see Paso Doble back this season. I think Randy will do better with this dance than last week’s.
I personally don’t like the idea of anyone redoing Singing in the Rain… In my mins, Somethings are just left untouchable.
Should read “In my mind, Somethings are just left untouchable”. (sorry)
Courtney, Patricia Kelly was in the audience when Kellie and Derek did the encore of their Argentine Tango. Plus, she was at the Choreographers discussion at the Emmys with Kenny Ortega and Paula Abdul (along with Robin Astaire). Derek was there (during All Stars when he sat out because of his neck) and he came onstage at the end.
My gut feeling Bethany will be dancing to over the rainbow from wizard of oz
Could Derek and Bethany be dancing to a song in The sound of music? I’d love that…
Patricia Kelly tweeted Derek after the Emmy special for Choreographers saying that Gene would have been proud of him. Great acclaim!
Bethany/Derek’s song would be awesome if it was “I Could Have Danced All Night” from My Fair Lady!!
The reason I ask about Patricia is that I think I might have read somewhere that at least part of the rights to “Singin’ in the Rain” belong to the Gene Kelly estate – of which Patricia is the executor. Perhaps being on good terms with the late Gene Kelly’s wife may have greased some otherwise very sticky wheels in order to get a song like “Singin’ in the Rain” cleared…
Many movies have awesome songs/soundtracks, so I’m pumped about movie week. I loved Scent of a Woman, especially the Tango scene. I am looking forward to Tommy and Peta’s version. Glad the Paso is back and glad that they gave it to Randy. Yep, I did read that Val wanted more freedom in the choreo so he asked their dance to be changed to jazz. I cannot for the other spoilers! Thanks, Princess Heidi!
That would be cool if they danced to Singing in the Rain. I also like the other suggestions, Wizard of OZ, Sound of Music, My Fair Lady… although I don’t think those would be considered “dance” movies.
Ah West Side Story YESS! but why did it have to be given to Janel and Val 🙁 I have a feeling Sadie and Mark are dancing to “Married Life” from UP, you can’t get more V.Waltz than that song.
Yep, Courtney, they were both at an Emmy Choreographers event where Derek was one of the ones honored. Kenny Ortega was also there, as was Paula Abdul, Nappytabs and a bunch of others whose names escape me right now.
Remember, the movie for Bethany Derek said was an iconic movie for *dance*
Isn’t interesting that Val was allowed to change his style to Jazz….a style that his partner has also trained in.
Heidi, is it really a smart move to dance a style where your partner could shine in week 3? I mean, she could do well with scores, but I suppose she isn’t leaving soon. Wouldn’t it be better to save those styles for later when the competition gets more difficult and there are fewer couples?
Heidi #31 that was my question when I first saw that Val changed his dance style. Are the pros allowed to change their dances now? I bet this is not an issue for their fans unless it’s Derek. Oh, Janel had prior jazz training? ( also not an issue to their fans unless it’s Derek).
Susan Boyle sang Unchained Melody and Peta and ?? danced to it.
I’m leaning toward Singing in the Rain. My idea of an iconic movie is one that would be impossible to remake and do it serious justice.
When you have the likes of Gene Kelly, Cyd Charise and Rita Moreno, along with Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor, looks like iconic to me. If the estate owns the rights to SitR (Gene Kelly w/Director credits), I am very happy they are protective of its contents. While it might now have been an award-winning movie back in the day, it has stood the test of time.
There so many song options within this movie, I will be happy with whatever Derek picks. I know he will do it justice. However, what I would really like to see Derek do is the Donald O’Connor “Make ’em Laugh” song and dance sequence!
It will be interesting to see what the “final answer” to Derek’s idea of an iconic dance movie might be.
No one accused Val of being smart, machane. 🙂
Thiana, I don’t know if Derek’s ever asked to get his dance changed. He’s had some pretty wacko matchups in terms of song and dance.
I feel like most people have already have picked there favorite(s) by week three. Actually it seems like a lot of people already choose who they want to root for before the season started. So if a couple really shines in week three it does not matter all that much, Im sure a few people may change over to rooting for them but most people are stuck on who they liked from week one. Then again when a couple does get voted off some of those fans go to diffrent couples to cheer but they proably have had a few favorites, backup couples from day one.
So my point in my comment above is even if val/janel do a killer jazz it wont matter that much because most people already have there favorites, though they can gain a few new fans.
“Ain’t no mountain high enough” has also been used in Stepmom and also in one of the Sister Act movies. Guardians of the Galaxy is more recent though…
@KJ – Sister Act & Remember the Titans are what we were guessing, but given that Antonio & Cheryl said they had a “recent” movie, GOTG is more plausible.
@kelly a- I don’t think everybody has their favorites picked by week 3. I think a lot of us here at Pure and those that talk about DWTS on twitter have their favorites because we’re more super fans (for lack of a better word) of the show. I watch the show with a friend who doesn’t keep up with anything that’s going on with DWTS other than the show itself and she decides each week who she wants to give her votes to based on that nights dance. I also have another friend who falls in between the two extremes (follows dancers on twitter but not to the extreme of talking with others about the show) and she doesn’t have a favorite either.
I personally think that most of us here are the exception to the rule and perhaps saving something your partner would be great at until later weeks might be a better option. I think the majority of the voting block doesn’t really have somebody that they’re absolutely rooting for at this point and jazz could have been a great dance to really grab peoples attention later in the season. Though I guess it could be too late then if they don’t end up connecting with viewers…
I thought of Saturday Night Fever, Fame, Singing in the Rain and the Sound of Music for Bethany & Derek too. He’ll amaze us no matter what movie it is!! 🙂
Just adding a little more info about Derek’s connections to the Kelly Estate… I think Derek also presented an award/honor to Patricia Ward Kelly at “Carnaval” (which is a huge annual dance event/celebration) last year. So it will be interesting if indeed Derek’s iconic song is ‘Singing in the Rain’… =)
I love “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”. I wish Alfonso and Witney had it.
If Derek gets “Singing In The Rain”, that’ll be amazing.
I’m just glad that Janel & Val didn’t get “Unchained Melodies.” Don’t think I could stomach the showmance that might go with it.
For some reason “the King And I” came to my mine and the song is “SHELL WE DANCE” – I would love to see Derek dance to that 🙂
I am enjoying and just so grateful for Derek’s presence on DWTS this season and look forward to it more than ever. I guess it may have to do with seeing his performances his summer and meeting him. He is so amazing and shows unbelievable love and patience to his fans. And a couple of hugs from him, conversations at the question sessions and after the shows when he would come out AGAIN to see the fans !!! he is something else!!!
Anyway his connections with all the GKelly people are very exciting but several of the other possibilities are things I know he could really make amazing dances. I am just over the moon excited for this week. He has said NOTHING since the post wk2 interviews and I just hope he’s busy working his magic and this lengthy silence is NOT that Bethany’s ankle XRay brought bad news. Trying to stay positive like Derek always does Wishing all the best for this partnership–it’s so fun and interesting to watch Derek work under these different circumstances again and to hear him talk about some of the details of the behind the scenes details gives you more of an idea of how his mind works. I know, gushing, but he’s INCREDIBLE
Can you guys confirm something?
I believe it’s been mentioned in the past that the celebs give a wish list of songs to the producers at the start of the season. Plus, I imagine that TPTB know what theme weeks they’re going to do as they’re planning the season.
So, why does it seem like they wait until the last minute to see if a desired song gets cleared?
Does buying the rights to play a certain song take a while?
Is it a complicated thing with lawyers and what not?
@Susan2 – In the past, they’ve submitted their song “wish lists” at the beginning of the season. Not quite sure why there seems to be so many clearance issues this season – unless they’re deliberately trying to wait till the last minute in order to thwart certain sites that like to do song spoilers 😉 Kidding. I do know that there usually is more red tape involved in clearing songs from movies, though, because you have to clear both the song rights and any sort of movie copyrights, as well (i.e. Antonio & Cheryl decide they want to dress as Groot and Rocket for their foxtrot – they then have to clear the rights to those characters). An example when both couldn’t be cleared? Shawn & Derek’s Knightrider Bhangra – they could clear the song, but not the rights to do anything with KITT…which made for an interesting problem for Derek when trying to choreograph a Knightrider bhangra that legally could not contain anything related to Knightrider 🙂 From the way a few of the couples have been talking, it seems like many of them were still waiting as of Monday to see if they got their first choice for movie week – and based on Jonathan’s interview in particular, I kind of wonder if “Back to Black” was his backup song. I’m almost certain “Pour Some Sugar on Me” is a backup – it was likely pretty easy to clear, since they’ve used it on the show before, and they didn’t have any issues when Julianne was promoting Rock of Ages a few seasons ago. Most likely a safety song – wonder if it will actually get used…
I think the UP song might either be the main theme, or the song used at the very beginning called “Married Life.” Either way, I’m super excited for Sadie & Mark’s Viennese Waltz because Up is just precious.
Thanks Courtney.
I was wondering why they picked Pour Some Sugar On Me again. It was used not too long ago for Tony and Wynonna’s ChaCha. I like the song. I’ll seat dance to it in the car when in comes on the classic rock channel, but it was recently used on the show.
I have watched “Mean Girls” too many times to count (I think I went to the only all boys Catholic high school that made students watch it every year…..add that to the fact it’s my sisters fav movie lol) so I am hoping he gets one of the songs from the movie.
How did I totally forget that Jonathan was in “Mean Girls” and he could do a song from that movie this upcoming week? lol
He could do a Quickstep to “Dancing with Myself” by The Donnas, which was used in Mean Girls. That would be fun! Hope it gets cleared because I can’t imagine Jonathan NOT doing some sort of “mean Girls” themed dance this season.
It used to be that *the pros* submitted a wish list for songs for a given style of dance. I think they probably still do, but they rarely are dancing to music that they requested any more and not just because of clearance, but because of the over abundance of “theme nights”. Not to mention that the pros used to request more traditional music, but TPTB want more current music to lure younger viewers.
Heh – Derek got what he did have for Knight Rider from Henry…who got it from ME on twitter. Did I get credit? Of course not…. 🙂
Derek – Singing in the Rain – You Were Meant For Me – JMO
@CC: That would be so fetch. 🙂
Depending on the style of dance Derek and Beth have I would like: Good Morning from Singing in the Rain.
To continue the SitR tutorial here’s the wiki link! 🙂
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singin'_in_the_Rain
So many songs, so little time. I would love to see Derek & Mark & Julianne do Moses Supposes.
Let’s face it. Derek just needs to do a remake! I think he’s the only dancer with the chops to pull it off.
Hi all,
I would send this in the Contact Us form but my emails are playing up a bit recently – so sorry this is off-topic, just needed a place to post it.
I’ve been visiting the site for a while now but over the last week, my front page hasn’t updated – the top post is the Gleb interview and the most recent post is one about Bethany/Derek taking a risk in Week 2. I’ve been able to find quick posts like this through the Twitter account but didn’t know if this was something anyone else was experiencing on the site at all? I’m a regular visitor so otherwise may need to delete and restore my browser. 😀
Sorry for a bit of an awkward placing of this post again, but thanks for reading.
T
Oh. My. God… YES!!
Ok, honestly, I don’t even care about the other couples anymore (sorry Sadie, Tommy and Betsey) I just want to see Bethany and Derek!! I REALLY hope they do like a Jazz to “Singin’ in the Rain” either that, or a Quickstep to “Good Morning”. AHHHH I am so flipping excited! 😀 😀 😀
Ok. Nevermind. I just now noticed that they ARE dancing to the song “Singin in the Rain” . woops. I got too excited that I didn’t notice 😛
I hope it’s a Jazz to it that blows Janel and Val out of the water. (Am I mean for saying that? hehe)
Is singin in the rain a good quickstep song? That could be fun
Yup, already people tweeting, “why Derek?”, ” favoritism”. Agggh, ignore…kkk.
Yay!!! I’m so excited. Derek dancing to one of my favorite songs of one of my all time favorite movie with one of my favorite actor/dancer. Finally a dream come true.
I think it would be good for a foxtrot. But since they already had foxtrot … I hope they have Jazz too. Waltz and quickstep would not fit at all.
Thiana, really? I expected it. Now Patricia is also biased?
I’m soooo excited. Bethany is one lucky girl. She does have that elegance and beauty to pull this off.
Oh yeah! Derek does “Singin’ in the Rain” 😀 The new show runner makes another good move. If you’re going to do “Singin’ in the Rain” for movie night, you give it to Derek Hough (to do anything else would be a waste).
Hope they get Bethany’s ankle sorted out…and I just *love* that instagram.
I wanna see Derek, Julianne and Mark do a performance to GOOD MORNING and Derek, Mark and Len to MOSES SUPPOSES. OMG, have I mentioned already that I looooooove this movie?
So excited, I can’t believe it! “Singing in the Rain”. Ice that foot Bethany, this is an historic moment, no pressure. :/
I haven’t seen that movie in ages. I’m going to watch it this weekend. May even check out West Side Story as well. Two classics. Can’t wait.
O M G Smart move Rob Wade and DWTS. This legendary song for the Emmy winner with all the balls and 7 years of beautiful and fun dances on DWTS and who Kenny Ortega(who worked with Gene Kelly) says Derek redefines choreography and everybody (almost) calls Derek “todays Gene Kelly” – a NO-BRAINER!! I am SO excited in case you couldn’t tell!! I hope they at least wait and use it to start the 2nd hour of the show or maybe close the show. I hope they are both feeling great this week and rehearsals are often and smooth cause this should be something really special. I hope Gene’s widow and Kenny Ortega maybe introduce the dance !! OMG!!!
OMG, OMG, OMG! When I went to Twitter, info about Bethany and Derek’s song was all over my TL. I came here right away to check! YEESS! At last, “Singing in the Rain” makes it to DWTS! I’m so excited! Love the pic above! I am truly happy that this song went to Derek to choreograph for Bethany’s dance next week. What could have Mr Wade done to convince Patricia Kelly or anyone/everyone in-charge of Gene Kelly’s estate to clear the song for DWTS use? Whatever it is, HUGE THANKS Mr. Wade, for doing this and giving the song to Derek. Hope Mrs. Kelly could be in the audience next week. Ahh! Monday, please come sooner!
Most likely it was Derek who did the convincing, since he’s met Patricia Kelly several times.
Based on how glowingly Patricia has spoken of Derek, I’d even venture a guess that she might have SUGGESTED the song herself. God, I hope she’s in the audience on Monday!!!
And to those crying “favoritism!” or “Waaaaahhhh, why couldn’t Val get ‘Singin’ in the Rain’???” Perhaps if your favorite pro spent more time cultivating valuable connections in the dance world and less time showmancing, then they, too, would have the clout to pull off the impossible.
Bethany and Derek are going to create magic on Monday, I just know it. I hope that Bethany’s ankle isn’t causing them to much trouble or that his choreography doesn’t have to be toned down because of it.
Hey everyone, it’s great that you’re all excited about the music this week, but let’s try not to post a ton of links in the comments, k?
Hey Courtney I have tweeted you the links I am so sorry. I just wanted to show you how Strictly come Dancing did them. I am passionate about ALL dances. Sure Derek will do them justice but. I am interested about how ALL the couples will fare. I would like to see how Tommy fares with Argentine Tango, Sadie and Mark to see how sweet their Up routine will be, Janel’s Jazz as it will be Val’s first Jazz routine
Singing in the rain is my fav movie of all time and Gene Kelly one of my fav dancers. I am so looking forward to seeing what derek comes up with and i really wish derek and gene would have had the chance to work together.
Wooohooo! I can’t wait for Bethany and Derek. Awesome news. 🙂
Not understanding all the excitement over “Singing In the Rain”. It’s not like “Singing In the Rain” hasn’t been used before on DWTS, it was used back in season 3 for Joey Lawrence & Edyta’s Foxtrot. I guess the only reason we haven’t heard it more in past seasons is because it must be that difficult to clear and that the TPTB do prefer to use more current music.
So excited for Derek and Bethany’s dance. I wonder, could it be quickstep? I can’t think of any other dance that fits that song.
@Penny, I think Jazz or Contemporary would suit it better.
@WrappingItAllUp – Not really understanding why you have chosen to be a buzzkill.
If you don’t get it, WrappingitUp, I just feel sad for you.
Hi Vogue or Heidi or Courtney, my good friend insists that Edyta and Joey Lawrence or some partner of hers in the past seasons danced to Singing in the Rain. Can any of you verify cause we are having a semi heated debate and I don’t want to get crazy. Thanks, and I’m trying to research some past videos myself!!!
@Tania, I talked to my computer programming hubby and Computer Science major son, and they say that you should delete your history and your cache and your cookies. And, you should do them often. Hopefully, that should work for you.
Joey Lawrence did do it. But so what? That was *15* seasons ago and it wasn’t Derek Hough. 🙂
OK well while I was researching I see the answer from @wrappinitallup and yes Edyta and Joey did dance it. Thanks and sorry.
Why it’s such a big deal to some people that a oft-forgotten couple from 16 seasons and 8 years ago danced to “Singin’ in the Rain” is beyond me. Guess some people will cling to just about ANYTHING in order to try and discredit Derek…
Not trying to be a buzzkill, I literally just do not comprehend all the excitement over songs that have been repeated on the show that’s all, and it’s especially annoying when the TPTB use the same song for the same dance in back to back seasons. But I do hope that Bethany and Derek are dancing Jazz to “Singing in the Rain” & will definitely be excited if it is Jazz because Derek will kill it and I do expect it to be leaps & bounds better over Janelnotadancer & Val’s Jazz to “I Feel Pretty” (I love West Side Story & wore out my VHS tape watching it so much as a kid, but I really cannot fathom seeing Jazz danced to that song). It’s just for me personally I honestly have more excitement over a song that’s never been used on the show before, but I do get why some songs are easier to clear than others that’s why we hear certain songs repeated a lot. I do hope that Lea is dancing to different song off the Back To The Future soundtrack, I’d rather hear Back In Time over The Power of Love (which was used as a week 1 foxtrot in 3 different seasons).
Yikes, Michael as Robin Hood?!? Please…no tights!!! I love Michael’s goofy-ness and sense of fun, but I’d like to see him do something unvarnished. Just a simple, sweet dance. “(Everything I do) I Do for You” is generally considered a schmaltzy song. So the tendency is to get all tongue-in-cheek and campy with it. However, when it’s done simply, it can be a romantic number. Unfortunately, I don’t think Michael has the dance skills to make it work that way. Hope he proves me wrong.
“Unchained Melody” is a favorite of mine, and kind of wish they’d given it to Lea and Artem. I feel Lea could have given a beautiful contemporary performance to that song. Since it’s Betsey and Tony, I hope they keep it simple.
“I Feel Pretty” will suit Janel. She’s very good at mugging and simpering, and there’s plenty of opportunity for both with this number. That’s not a knock against the song because I love the music from West Side Story.
“Up” is such a funny yet heartwarming movie. Can’t wait to see Sadie and Mark’s Viennese Waltz. I hope she knocks everyone’s socks off with a gorgeous dance.
Oh god. Mugging and simpering is exactly right. Not particularly looking forward to that one.
Wrapping, if you don’t comprehend something, yet everyone is buzzing with excitement, maybe you should save your criticism for a later time. It’s netiquette, reading the room…and no one likes to have their cheerios peed in, thankyouverymuch.
Over the moon at Sadie’s song right now.
Thanks so much for the spoilers ladies!!!
#89 (Cidra) ++++1 to everything you said! God, I’m hoping Michael doesn’t dance a Waltz in tights….
So Alfonso is going from V. Waltz to Foxtrot to Quickstep. Yikes. Which is it Alfonso!? Tell us NOW!!! 😛
I hope Betsey and Tony do a beautiful dance to “Unchained Melody” though I am guessing Tony probably wanted a Viennese Waltz to it instead of a Contemporary seeing as how that isn’t his forte. The Viennese Waltz that was done on Strictly Come Dancing to “Unchained Melody” was GORGEOUS.
…and Monday is a non-elimination night. Right?
I was right about Lea dancing to “The Power Of Love.” Yay me. 🙂 😉
Thanks, Lori, I’ll give that a try!!
Where did you get the info that Janel is doing I Feel Pretty? (: That feels a little off to me though. For starters style of the song is more suited to a waltz that a jazz imho.
Also Janel posted what I think is a BIG hint on her instagram of Ellen – http://instagram.com/p/tYy98yGp1z/?modal=true – captioned “ELLEN. She’s COOL. I like.” And we all know Cool is a WSS song – which I think is far more suited for Jazz.
In an interview I thought Alfonso said if the song they want gets cleared…it’s gonna be a fast dance. So maybe it is quickstep because I thought it was interesting he would have 3 “fast” dances in a row.
“…and Monday is a non-elimination night. Right?”
It is???? No one goes home?
Do you still think the Switch Up will be in Week 4? If so, someone will have to go home to even up the switches.
I’m over the moon about Derek and Bethany’s song like everyone else! I agree that Bethany is the perfect partner for it.
I just re-read my comment about the switches. I should never post anything before my first glug of coffee – my brain is still in neutral!
While everyone is excited about “Singin’ in the Rain” and it’s understandable, I just wish he was doing it with a better partner. So far, I haven’t been impressed by Bethany; I still don’t know who she is. Plus, she’s injured. How much can she do?
I think Bethany has that old Hollywood vibe and look going on and she’s very upbeat, graceful and poised. She will play that part really well. Has Derek ever had a partner who wasn’t injured at some point? He’ll make it work I’m sure. 🙂
I’ll take Michael in tights as long as he shoots CAI in the butt with an arrow.
I’d like to see Alfonso in a slow dance,so I’m hoping for a VW instead of the Quickstep.
I love Up. For an animated children’s movie it has such a moving and profound love story. I betcha we’ll see a big bunch of balloons on the dance floor!
@Olivia – Janel definitely has “I Feel Pretty” – Val straight-up said it in an interview. He also said that it was originally supposed to be a Viennese waltz, but asked for it to be changed to a jazz number instead. If you’ve got issues with it, take it up with him. And trust me when I say that a rather casual caption on an IG photo is really reaching for clues…
“Power of Love” is still fun, but I feel like “Back in Time” is unfairly forgotten, so it would have nice to see that one.
According to the abc website someone will be eliminated. This is what it said: about to get even more glamorous in the ballroom as Dancing with the Stars hosts Movie Night MONDAY 8|7c on ABC! In a tribute to Tinseltown, the 11 remaining couples will dance to songs from their favorite movies to compete for the judges’ scores and, of course, your votes. And speaking of judges, Movie Night wouldn’t be complete without a bonafide movie star as a guest, so we’ll be welcoming actor and comedian Kevin Hart (Ride Along, Think Like a Man and the upcoming The Wedding Ringer) to join Carrie Ann Inaba, Julianne Hough and Bruno Tonioli at the judges’ table!
But remember, it won’t be a movie moment ending for one of our couples, since one of them will be eliminated by the end of the show!
Can I just take a moment to ask “Am I the only person who did NOT know ‘The Power of Love’ was from ‘Back to the Future’?!? I try to block that film out of my head as it is one of my LEASE liked films, so the fact that I just realized a song I’ve liked for a while now is from a film I despise, kind of makes me feel like I slipped on a banana peel 😛
@Carrie: It could be true, or it could just be a mistake based on a poor cut-and-paste job. [See the voting for the switch up page to see what I mean.]
I don’t want an elimination with only judges scores.
Even Twitter votes aren’t fair
It’s better to have double elimination later which includes viewer votes
I wonder if Witney or Alfonso chose their song?
“Back to Black” has been in my DWTS song wish list for a LONG time.. but the Amy Winehouse version… Not a fan of this Great Gatsby version. And for a tango… very, very odd.
That song for Alfonso & Witney is pretty weird also. It sounds more to me like it would be best for a Samba instead of any of the ballroom dances. I guess it’s probably closest to a Foxtrot though. Well, I think it’s still gonna be a fun performance for Alfonso.
And I am already putting my money of Bethany & Derek as the highest score next week. A Jazz and “Singing in the Rain”? Perfection. Again, I hope it blows Janel & Val’s out of the water. Muahahaha.:P
Monday is an elimination night, according to DWTSGossip and a press release.
Regarding an elimination on Monday – I wonder if they will combine last week’s votes with this week’s scores (so last week’s votes count for two different eliminations). It would explain why they didn’t announce a real bottom two.
Yay, very excited Bethany and Derek have Jazz! Derek’s definitely the best at choreographing Jazz followed by Mark and Sharna; whatever he’s got planned for Bethany it’s gonna be fantastic.
And just stick another nail in the coffin because it’s pretty much official that Val & Janel are yet again trying waaaaay too hard as evidenced from their schmoozy behavior to now changing their dance from Viennese Waltz to Jazz because I just read they want “to do the movie justice” and they can only do that with Jazz. “I Feel Pretty” is written in waltz timing and it would’ve made a lovely Viennese Waltz. I feel like they’re wasting the song by dancing Jazz to it. Any of the other male pros would’ve been able to do the movie justice and pull it off without changing their assigned dance style especially with a Viennese Waltz which is why I think their reasoning for changing it is horse-pucky. I really tried to keep an open mind and give these two a chance after the first 2 weeks, but something about Janel just rubs me the wrong way along with the schmoozy behavior, not to mention the fact that her recent dance experience is not addressed while Lea & Alfonso’s experience from over 20 years or more is addressed. I just really hope that they don’t make it past week 6 or 7.
I’m not a betting person, but I guarantee that Bethany & Derek will definitely score higher on their Jazz routine than Janel & Val will because frankly I don’t think Val’s that good at choreographing Jazz.
I’m fairly sure that the Switch up page was not a “cut and paste” error, but a scheduling error. On this website, for example, we write posts all the time and schedule them to post at a specific day and time in the future. If someone tried to do that, and screwed up the date and time, boom – live post that’s hidden back in the All Star season portion of the blog. As I noted yesterday on twitter, that post was not accessible from the DWTS web site, that I could find. DWTSGossip found it completely by accident – she told me so herself. All of that speaks to a scheduling error. I’ve done it myself, and had a post show up way back in time. It can be hard to catch too, if you’re not paying attention.
I really have no idea how they could do an elimination on Monday without votes being calculated in. Depending on how they determine it, like if they just use judges’ scores, that’s obviously a major disadvantage to the dancers without as much skill but has a strong fan vote. Already pissed at the show and we don’t even know anything else.
Thanks for the updated spoilers! Interesting on the plot twists! As much as I would love to see Derek perform to Singing in the Rain I can’t help but wish Alfonso and Witney were doing the song instead. When I saw the mention of “tap dancing” I couldn’t help but let my mind wander! Wonder what happened to Val’s grand plan? I never really thought “I Feel Pretty” was the right selection anyway.
Do I dare hope for a standout performance from Betsey again???? Tony is the best lifter on the show so I hope they are able to execute everything. It could really be beautiful with Betsey.
Stay tuned for more info, Wrapping. Val made a boo boo.
I wonder if the elimination is based on cumulative votes from week 1 & 2. I hope that is what it is and not based on twitter votes. People on the West Coast can’t vote because they haven’t seen the show and not all people use twitter.
Derek is a GREAT tapper. My wish (and I stole this from someone on twitter) would be to see Derek and Alfonso do a great tap number. Singing in the Rain duo?? Awesomeness.
Question. Wasn’t Carrie Ann in Austin Powers? A character called Fook You?
Yes Nathan, she was one of the Harajuku twins. I can’t remember if she was Fook You or Fook Me.
Heidi, seems like Val made a HUGE stinkin’ boo boo, what a cluster-flip. First they change the dance style and now the song? They’re soooooo freaking screwed, I expect to see some drama in their package all about this. “America” is my least favorite song from West Side Story, the TPTB really should’ve used this one for America week back in season 12.
Is Hey Goldmember the song Foxy Cleopatra sings before Goldmember comes out onto the roller skating floor?
If it is then I’m going to join everyone in WTF land. It’s nowhere near a Quickstep song.
Is it possible “I Feel Pretty” was the original song for the Waltz and then he changed the song once they switched to Jazz? I guess I’m just wondering if they rehearsed to “I Feel Pretty” at all. I’m not going to assume anything about the dance though just because I don’t want to get my hopes up it won’t pan out for them.
A little concerned about Alfonso but will hope for the best!
Where did you see Val say they had I Feel Pretty as their song? All I ever saw him and Janel say was that they had West Side Story. And he said he decided to change it to Jazz because it’s a style that allows for more freedom, and he wanted to do West Side Story justice. Never saw anyone say anything about song, and they’re usually not allowed to mention songs… If there’s a new interview I haven’t seen, please post the link.
And to the people talking about Janel not mentioning her dance experience, she mentioned it in pretty much every interview before the premiere, including her first blog. She never tried to hide anything. But I don’t think her “training” was that serious, because it doens’t really show in her dancing, compared to Lea. A lot of people who do musical theater and Broadway have some dance experience… I think it makes for a more interesting and competitive show.
@Susan2 – Not familiar with the movie or the song. Hopefully Witney knows how to, as Tim Gunn would say… Make it Work!
Although last weeks song choice didn’t seem to match the Samba, Alfonso and Witney still rocked the house. I doubt if the atmosphere this week will change.
I completely understand if Vajanel involuntarily have to switch their song because it wasn’t cleared but if they voluntarily switch it because it doesn’t fit with their dance then my question will be doesn’t the pro supposed to make it work to whatever song given to them? Remember 50’s Paso?
I’m a bit concern about Bethany. Her recent papz photo shows she’s still wearing her ankle wrap. Hope it’s just for now. I’m curious to see Tony and Betsy lifts. We know he’s a good lifter because if he ever drop Betsy, I can predict fracture hip/ pelvic which can lead to complications d/t her age.
Sorry for the double post re Betsy lifts…fx and of course concussion.
@Maina – I thought Val mentioned it in one of their post-show interviews on Tuesday night and then I saw it posted here as well. I could be wrong and he never mentioned it, I was more just asking the question wondering if they have been rehearsing to “America” the entire time or not. It would make a difference, I think, if they switched it after rehearsing as it would have meant they lost some rehearsal time.
@Courtney: Thanks for clearing that up! Maybe it’s just my wishful thinking speaking (; WSS is one of my favorite movies, and I’m hoping it’ll be awesome however things shake out 😀 Thanks for all the good work you guys are doing here, I need my DWTS fix in between episodes and you guys are gold.
I think it’s delicious that Vajanel has been tripping over themselves all week with dance and song changes. Guess they were so busy storyboarding their showmance they weren’t paying much attention to minor details like their dance. Of course, if they get a bad training edit or turn in a lackluster performance, they’ll be able to blame it all on the stress the producers caused with all these changes. 🙄
I just love when sassy Val fans show up demanding explanations 😛
Here’s one for you, Maina: Val apparently named their song, their movie, and their style SPECIFICALLY in a post-show interview. Not sure which one, because I didn’t need convincing – once I heard him say West Side Story, I knew it was “I Feel Pretty”, because Deep Throat had mentioned to me prior that someone was dancing to that song for movie week. We actually made the mistake of thinking it was Bethany & Derek’s song, based on hints Derek was giving on Monday night – I’d post the link to where we posted that it was Bethany & Derek’s over at PDH, but I doubt you’d click it. It wasn’t until Val mentioned it in an interview (and DancingABC posted the pic of he & Janel “studying up” on West Side Story on IG) that we realized that it was actually Val & Janel’s song, and Derek’s hints were referencing some other “old dance movie”. Based on new intel today, we discovered that Val & Janel have most recently been rehearsing to “America” – so the song changed sometime between Monday night and this morning. Don’t know if the song changed when the style changed, or the style changed and then the song changed later, but there has most definitely been some changing going on – draw your own conclusions.
I’m not “demanding” anything, just asking… No sass here.
I’ve never seen WST, so I don’t know much about it. I saw the pic saying they had Jazz and it hinted to WST, which they had already mentioned in George’s interview. But that’s the only interview of them that has been posted thus far. That and a Glamour article.
I don’t mind the changes, it’s happened before. If Janel is happy with it, considering that WST is her favorite musical, then it’s all good.
But thanks for answering me…
And btw, I have nothing against any pros. They’re all incredibly talented, I enjoy watching all of them. I’m not one of those silly people who will praise their favorite and bash all the others… I love Val, and I love Derek as well; they’re both different and dwts is a better show with both of them on.
Oops, I meant WSS (West Side Story, in case I wasn’t clear before).
The song America has a lot of sass in it so would work for jazz better imo. It is Rita Morena’s number in the movie so if she happened to be in the audience that would be quite the coup. However, it is an iconic dance number in the movie so unless Val gets help, I can’t see it being anywhere near the creative genius of what DH could do. Interesting that both these pros have iconic classic movie songs to choreograph to.
@maina, you should see the movie. WSS has some of the most amazing dance numbers. Like the movie that Singing in the Rain was in which I can’t remember for some reason, it was groundbreaking in its dance choreography. Seriously awesome stuff and hard to emulate. Derek will be fine with his number as he has so much experience, Val will be really challenged I think.
Gosh, Derek dancing to Singing in The Rain-Dreams do come true & YES he does need to do a remake of one of Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire’s films.
#68 I just love your comment.. Ice that ankle Bethany-history in the making-lol
They have a beautiful chemistry & I agree she has the beauty & elegance it takes to pull off an amazing routine. I know Derek is going to choreograph something special for this routine as it means a lot to him too.
I hope he adds a little tap dancing in the beginning of the song!! Excited!!
I read everyone’s comments but how come Val got to change the dance style. I remember some couples having to work with songs that were not suited to the type of dance, but used their creativity to the best of their ability I call “no fair” on Val. He shouldn’t get special treatment. I remember the outrage that many expressed over various dance styles that the pro’s had to deal with. TPTB need to have same rules for all the pros.
#135 Judy – Singing in the Rain was in…. Singing in the Rain!
Actually, it was in a LOT of movies before Singing in the Rain – Hollywood in the 30’s and 40’s recycled songs endlessly – but after that movie, with the definitive use of that song, that was pretty much it…
@Judy: I live in Brazil, classic american movies aren’t that easy to find here.. There are A LOT of famous classic movies I haven’t seen yet, but I certainly will someday 🙂
My sense, Thiana, is that Derek won’t let Bethany take the wrap off. He pretty much said she’s too casual about it and he has to watch her. 🙂
Maina – point is, why is Val changing anything at all? Doesn’t he have the skill to make it work? You rarely hear other pros switching stuff. And like someone else said – 50’s Paso?? Add in Futuristic Paso, Pretty Woman Tango and a host of others (including Knight Rider Bhangra). Some of Derek’s hardest combinations have resulted in Emmy nominations. I say, you only switch in the most dire circumstances – not because you claim you want to “do the movie justice”. That sounds to me like code for “I’m going to fix this so Janel is in her wheelhouse”.
Singing in the Rain was in….Singing in the Rain. 🙂
I wonder if Derek and Bethany will be using the rain special effect Derek used for Heart cry at the end.
I love when good contestants get great songs……Alfonso hit the jackpot with that one
.
And I have to say that tommy got a good one too. Not sure how he will do with a sexy tango but then again he has pretty much exceeded all my expectations this far so I am excited to see this one.
Thx for the name of the movie! Really thought it was called something else but in any case, I am really looking forward to what Derek does and hope their is no prop malfunction!
Well, it would have been a lot easier for Val to choreograph a Viennese Waltz, given that he’s a ballroom dancer. He wasn’t trained in jazz and I doubt that Janel’s experience with jazz is that extensive to the point where she can give input in choreography. I think he just wants to do something different, something that’s not so much in his comfort zone. And it’s not the first time people change music…
I believe what he said in that Glamour interview and I get it, I don’t have a problem with it or anyone else who chooses to change song or style… I think one thing led to the other – the style change led to the song change bc I Feel Preety (if they really had that originally) doesn’t suit jazz.
The 50’s paso and other dances you mentioned were combined themes given to them, like they did in the allstar season. I think the situation is different this time bc they don’t have to incorporate any crazy themes in the dance…
But anyway… We probably won’t agree on this…
I’m not crazy about all these themes to be honest. I guess it makes for a good show, but I prefer to see the couples just get out there and dance. Hope this is gonna be the last of the themes. But I hope all the couples do well on Monday.
I kinda feel like they got a good song for jazz but Val really needs to make it really good given how iconic that scene is.
Er, Maina – this coming Monday is ALSO a theme. You’re right, we won’t agree.
“America” is a great song. Janel & Val will probably do well. I don’t think Val should have changed their dance. Picking Jazz this early will haunt them later. I’m really hoping they go with the Amy Winehouse version. I know that it’s not the movie one but still. Alfonso & Witney will probably kill this dance. Bethany & Derek got a great song. Hopefully they’ll do it justice. I still hate that they are dong jazzes this early.
Maina, Sure it would be a lot easier for Val to choreograph a Viennese Waltz, but since when is DWTS about making it easy on the pro? Lately it’s been all about throwing curve balls at the couples to see who has a meltdown (because they think that makes good TV). Have you heard the expression “if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen”? Well, I suggest it’s time for Val to practice some of that. He’s a better dancer and choreographer than his brother ever was; so to use your own words, he should just “get out there and dance” instead of trying to massage the situation into something he feels comfortable with.
I also would prefer DWTS quit playing silly games with the couples, the dance styles, and the themes, but it is what it is. If you prefer to see couples just “get out there and dance”, you might want to consider getting a good VPN connection and watching the BBC’s “Strictly Come Dancing” instead. They kicked off their series today, and while they’re starting to veer off the path too, they’re still more traditional than DWTS.
Good point, Jocelyn. You would think that saving what is likely to be your best style towards the end of the competition would be the smarter move. With 11 dancers still on the show, she should be able to score plenty high enough with V. Waltz to be safe with no problem.
@PrincessHeidi- That was exactly my thinking behind it. I’m kind of surprised Val was even allowed to change the dance stye and pick the one they were doing instead. Does this usually happen or is this a once in a blue moon occurrence?
I think it’s a once in a blue moon occurrence.
PH—that was my Tweet for Derek and Alfonso to do a Tap number together 😉
@PrincessHeidi- That’s what I figured. Thanks. 🙂
Thinking about the elimination on Monday and I do not know how they can do it and have an even number of celebrities for switch up night. If they eliminate one this coming Monday and the following Monday that would put them at 9 celebrities for switch up. If they do not eliminate this coming Monday, but the following Monday then that would put them at 10 for switch up – which would make sense as I do not see how they can do the switch up with an odd number. But who know what TPTB have in mind.
The number of couples I don’t think matters for the switch up.
I think they’ll just take the next lowest rated couple from last week and eliminate them. as long as viewer vote is included I don’t mind
They can do a switch with an odd number of couples. Imagine 5 female pros standing in a circle with their partners. Then all the pros move one to the right. Now every guy has a new partner.
So these are my guesses for score:
Janel and Val: 34 (9,8,9,8)
Alfonso and witney: 36 (9,9,9,9)
Lea and Artem: 36 (9,9,9,9)
Sadie and mark: 34 (9,9,8,8)
Antonio and Cheryl: 30 (8,7,7,8)
Michael and Emma: 26 (7,6,7,6)
Bethany and Derek: 38 (10,9,10,9)
Betsey and Tony: 32 (8,8,8,8)
Randy and Karina: 32 (8,8,8,8)
tommy and peta: 30 (8,7,7,8)
jonathan and Allison: 32 (8,8,8,8)
I think it’s pretty clear that vajanel are the pimpees this season. They started out with the hard core showmance like maksil, but that didn’t go over since it’s common knowledge she is in a committed relationship, so they have to look for new ways to give them an advantage. This MBT isn’t going to be a slam dunk for the fam though. Different season.
since kevin hart is the guest judge, i am assuming he will be giving 8s, 9s, and 10s, which is an advantage for Tommy, Michael, Betsey, and even Antonio who couldn’t achieve those scores with Len around. also my friend’s aunt used to judge dance competitions throughout the california area and claimed Janel was at several of her competitions around 1999-2001 because she remembered a girl from Hawaii with the name Janel. she said she’s 99.999% it was her and how she was a nightmare backstage to the other contestants and heard her dance studio kicked her out because she was a major bee word to everyone at a very young age and the mother was the type of mother who would let her daughter run around and wreck things and cause trouble and not do anything. she was a decent dancer, not spectacular, and complained often how she was never 1st place.
[…] Heidi’s “Who’s Dancing What?” post is getting a tad long, I thought I had better move this over to its own post and open the […]
I’ll give it a shot with the scores. Last week I was waaaay off: (CAI, Kevin, Julianne, Bruno)
Sadie & Mark: V.Waltz : 33 (8,9,8,8)
Janel & Val: Jazz : 37 (9,9,9,10)
Jonathan & Allison: Tango : 32 (8,8,8,8)
Tommy & Peta: Arg. Tango : 29 (7,8,7,7)
Michael & Emma: Waltz : 28 (7,7,7,7)
Lea & Artem: ChaCha : 34 (8,9,8,9)
Alfonso & Witney: Quickstep : 33 (8,9,8,8)
Betsey & Tony : Contemporary : 29 (7,8,7,7)
Antonio & Cheryl : Foxtrot : 32 (8,8,8,8)
Bethany & Derek: Jazz : 38 (9,10,9,10)

@165 as someone here to mostly rarely mentions couples who I don’t appreciate or care for, I can say that there are a lot of here who spend most of our time here talking about what we like and not so much what we don’t like. And for the times when what we don’t like gets talked about, from what I can see, it’s usually by people who mostly talk about the positive. This IS a discussion place so of course people will process through things that irk them. To me it seems there are only a very few who mainly harp against a pair they don’t like. It’s way too easy to dismiss all the great content created by the site owners/moderators and comments by only noticing those negative ones, not so different from what your approach to criticizing the site. IMO
Yikes, my opinion above was so poorly written and edited, sorry! But I stand by the sentiment I tried to express.
Tela & Rob, I shouldn’t even have to tell you that it’s not your place to tell people what they can & cannot post about. Janel & Val have been having issues with their routine; we’re reporting on it. I’m sure you’d be bitching & moaning just the same if we weren’t talking about it at all. Don’t like it here? Then why are you commenting? See, it goes both ways 😉
Reporting sounds great; also great to support all the terrific couples out there this season. Not sure why my comment got deleted? I think my point was a worthy addition to your reportage; Janel didn’t move to California until she was a teen, and I don’t see anything out there about her having been in dance competitions.
Rob, Janel’s own resume on her website notes that she’s trained in Jazz, Hip Hop and broadway dancing, in addition to a couple other styles. I’ve screencapped it and saved it on my computer in the event that she edits. She also said in interviews before the show started that she has some training. You don’t need to be in competitions to be a ringer, which she most definitely IS.
I think it is a bit weird that almost all the couples are dancing to diferent styles except janel and beth. I’m expecting a great dance from motough.
Really want randy to kill the paso. Interested to see how allison will react or not to the judges comments. Will she break the hold? ? And of course tommy! Argentine tango w peta..can’t wait for that.
It’s going to be a great show.
Beth has some jazz experience too, but I’m sure it’s not as much as Janel has.
And it stopped when she was *13*. Janel’s is much more recent and extensive.
From what I remember from one of Bethany’s YouTube videos, which outlined her life up to that moment, she maybe had a year or so of dance classes (from the middle/end of 6th grade until she hit 8th grade) – so her total experience is pretty minimal.
[…] for the songs and dance genres, PureDWTS once again has all of the available Dancing With the Stars spoilers. There have been some tweaks and even major changes compared to what the pairs had revealed after […]
@Rob- i first didn’t believe it at first but how many Janel Parrishes from Hawaii do you know? 😉 my friend’s aunt knows the dance competition circuit very well having been a judge for 30 plus years and claims she remembers Janel very well. she contacted her other colleagues and one of the claimed that Janel took some dance classes in Cali and heard from the mother that they were bouncing from Hawaii to Cali so many times, she (Janel) didn’t have much of a home there. and this is allegedly. i’m just reporting what i hear. and after she quit dance, she went on to singing and took singing lessons around cali . and i believe that since she was on the revived Star Search show. another of my friend’s aunt’s colleague claimed Sadie danced competitively in the Louisiana area but i couldn’t find anything to base that off. according to the colleague, Sadie danced in a couple of small competitions and took lessons at a very small mom & pop like dance studio until she was 14 because the studio got turned into a tire factory :p as ridiculous and hilarious as it sounds, that is what i heard. again i am saying that is 100% true but that is what im hearing from people who formerly judged dance competitions.
Can we guess that Alfonso is dancing first since his name is the one that pops up when you sign into the “You Raise the Paddle” voting screen?
BTW I hate the whole idea of east coast FB users apparently getting a real judge’s vote next week after “just for fun” this week.
You all do realize that MOST young girls take dance classes, right?? If they quit when they became teens, it’s pretty hard to call them out on it. Janel has her dance training on her RESUME, on the other hand.
Even some guys take a dance class. Whether it’s to meet girls, use for the school play, or to help if they play football, etc.
I don’t mind celebs with experience being on the show. It’s when they are not forthcoming about it. I also didn’t like during season 17 how the show kept airing all the “Corbin is a dancer” or “Corbin is so good” yada yada comments whereas you never heard aired comments about Zendaya, Elizabeth, or Danica. I do remember Nene was outspoken about being up against professional ice dancers-but people I guess just took it as her being humorous.
Speaking of Nene – It’s being said here in New York that she is the #1 consideration to take Joan River’s seat on the Fashion Police. Melissa Rivers was quoted as saying “Joan would want the show to continue and Joan loved Nene.”
Anyone with dancing background or a dancer does not matter as long as she’s Val’s partner but it becomes a “favoritism” issue when it’s Derek. Some even say to give Betsy to Derek during the switch up to “challenge” him more. Really?! My mind couldn’t comprehend this. Does anybody know Amy? Remember the double amputee from last season? What about giving Betsy to Val? How’s that? I don’t see him being challenge enough before, even this season.
I started watching DWTS since almost the beginning and my favorite pro wasn’t Derek. I used to like Tony for some reason. But then I noticed on almost every DWTS boards out there there were always hatred towards Derek. So I started paying more attention to him and that’s how I realize why people envy him. I think people (fans and pro) see him as a threat because of his amazing talent. “The flower which is single need not envy the thorns that are numerous.”
I like America much better than I feel pretty anyway, and I actually do like Val and Janel, especially for that song. West Side Story is my favorite musical too, but America is just a better song. They’re showing a range and versatility, and versatility is one of the concerns that the judges voiced on the first week. First people complain they’re “too sexy” and now what? Too “jazzy and iconic”? No such thing. They were on fire the first week, their foxtrot was ballroom but also modern and amazing, and they picked the right song for tonight.
Having seen Janel act on PLL, I know that she is very versatile and I think everyone is underestimating them because you all seem to be a bit too tied up in their resumes and their chemistry and trying to figure out if there’s something going on off the dance floor. People are all caught up in the drama and not paying attention to the dancing!
I can’t wait to see what they bust out with tonight and to see everyone’s reaction.
So, I always enjoy when some celebrites with a significant amount of experience fail to say it (Danica comes to mind) and in one way or another they have to admite it (I think it was dance moms Abby in Danica’s case) but I really hope that one of the judges just says it tonight to Jannel because I would love to see Val’s reaction.
@Lex: Nene for Fashion Police? Ugh. I loved Joan and her sense of humor but Nene and Guilianna on the same show might make me barf.
Trish, worry about yourself and not what other people are saying. “You all” – you’re a newbie here, you don’t get to cast aspersions on the rest of us. Express YOUR opinion, not your opinion of other posters. Or else.
Drama?? Gee, where is that drama coming from? We certainly aren’t imagining it. You wanna talk about Janel’s dancing? I don’t actually remember her routines except for the excessive mugging. If that’s what passes for “acting” on PLL….well, there’s a reason why it’s on an off network.
Thiana – people are STUPID. They look at Amy as a ringer, but refuse to see that every partner, save one, that Val has had has been a ringer. That’s the boy that needs to be challenged. We will never know if he’s a good choreographer or not until he gets someone with no experience at all. Well, his first partner had no experience and they were the first ones out, weren’t they?
The funniest thing about the whole “give Betsy to Derek” argument is that they tried that last time with NeNe and Tony was MISERABLE and totally shown up by Derek. I guess they really hate Tony, eh? 😀
Is someone going home tonight?
What happens, Trish, is that you no longer get to post here. Buh bye. Now I’m laughing. LOL
As for you, W9129, if you aren’t liking what you’re reading…why are you still reading?? Since you can’t seem to comment in any way other than to complain, you won’t be commenting at all.
178-In Season 16 Zendaya straight up said in her package on the premire that she was a hip hop dancer and Brooke asked her about her dance background in the skybox after words. It never was hidden. With Elizabeth her whole story that season was getting back into her first love which is dance. People were well aware she was once a dancer. Danica was the only one who tried to keep her dance experience hidden.
Janel would be considered a ringer, it will be intersting if her jazz background is brought up tonight. But Bethany called herself a competitive dancer. I think her dance background is more than a few lessons if she would go as far to say she was competitive.
Bethany also said she quit dancing when she was 13 years old. She was competitive like many 11 and 12 year olds were “competitive”. No comparison to Janel.
That’s very interesting news about Bethany and also Sadie, whom I did not realize had dance experience. I like the fact that Janel, Alfonso and Lea have all been up front about their experiences. Let’s not forget that Lea’s experience with ABT was pretty extensive!
Seriously, I think there is something wrong when people equate Bethany, Sadie, Janel, Alfonso and Lea in terms of dance experience. It lacks discernment in a big way.
First off, there is NO evidence that Sadie ever had any dance lessons of any kind. You’re taking the word of someone else on this site. This is not “fact”.
Secondly, Bethany danced up to age 13. How in the hell does that compare to Janel’s CURRENT and more extensive training? And how on earth do you compare Janel’s CURRENT training to Alfonso’s dancing when he was 12 years old – that was THIRTY years ago. Lea?? Even longer ago. This is why I wrote my long post about ringers – yet people continue to talk about these five people as if they are all equal in terms of training and experience.
There is no helping some people. You want to equate all of them to each other, IMO, so you can dismiss them when they are good. Much like Serge on Afterbuzz – Sadie was a good dancer, she must have experience. I think that is an extremely ignorant point of view. I got very tired of hearing it about all of Derek’s partners whether they had experience or not and I don’t much like hearing it about Sadie, Lea and Alfonso. I guess it’s just the lack of logic that bothers me, not the fact that people were discrediting Derek.
I judge how good a choreographer is based on how great & creative their routines are period, and i think Val has a solid enough body of work to prove he’s a good choreographer to me. Their are plenty of examples on dwts & sytycd of choreographers working with some amazing dancers and still churning out some terrible to highy unimpressive routines.
Consider the Emmys, they vote for how great a piece was, not how good a routine was considering the choreographer was working with nondancers.
I think the nondancer argument can be better served to argue if one thinks someone is a good teacher or not…
Val is VERY hit and miss to me – take his and Janel’s Jive, for example. There was nothing to it – Derek did a better job with Bethany’s. It’s all well and good to say you judge them by how creative they are – but it’s very easy to be “great and creative” when all of your partners have DANCE EXPERIENCE. You don’t spend the bulk of your time teaching them how to move. Give Val the equivalent of Joanna Krupa – then we’ll see how “great and creative” he can be.
Val is at a crossroads. He can learn from Derek (and he has appeared, at times, like he was going to go in this direction) or he can take a page out of Maks’ book with Meryl….unfortunately, he does that a bit too often. His entire season 15 was a mess, for example. Even he is embarrassed by it. Last season, he had some good to great routines – but the only two that were truly memorable were his dance with Meryl (Biggest ringer of all time) and the dance with Lindsay and Jenna dressed as teacups – and honestly, I remember that dance because of how cute the teacups were.
@Princess Heidi: Its funny because I only really remember the teacups in that dance as well. My cousin is actually dressing up a teacup for Halloween because she liked the costume so much. She always makes her costumes from scratch…oh and she is 12.
Now this is just my opinion, but when I think of my favorite/ greatest choreographic pieces that derek has done on this show to date, i think of things like his A. Tango and Paso with Nicole, his tango with Ricki, his samba/q.step/mambo with shawn (which I still think was his greatest season to date), his waltz with jennifer…etc. The only nondancer pieces that would even sniff my favorite derek routines list is possibly his paso with joanna & his jazz with kellie pickler. Other than that most of my favorite choreographic pieces of dereks have come from partners with dance experience. Should or does that take away from how good of a choreographer i thought derek had to be to put them together? No
I think you might be doing to Val what you admonish a lot of people for doing to derek, discrediting a lot of his work because ‘its very easy to be great and creative’ when your partners have dance experience.
There will definitely be no winning with some people PH. You can have all the logic in the world to back something and they will still find ways to make it into something else. The “what is a real ringer” issue and the ‘Derek fans’ vs. “C bros fans” issues will never go away…
As the most recent topic here, I like most of Val’s choreo. My opinion is you can tell a good choreographer regardless of the variety of his partners dance level. A pro given a partner with dance experience can still make a routine boring if they are weak choreographers (ie: Maks with Meryl and Tony with Melissa….and don’t attack me people, not ALL the routines of these couples were boring or weak, just several IMO). I rarely find Val’s routines boring or bad, I just don’t always like he and his partners as a pair.
The question as far as DWTS goes to me would be can Val take a girl with little or no dance experience to the title? Well, he hasn’t even taken a ringer/one with a significant amount of dance experience to the title yet, so I am doubtful of saying yes to that question. He isn’t the only one though, there are other pros that have only won with ringers, one being Mark Ballas.
RE: ELMINATION TONIGHT Can anyone tell me how the elim is gonna work tonight? Do we still get to vote? Is it the combined scores from this week and last week plus last week’s votes. Don’t they usually eliminate the beginning of the following Monday? Help me out here. Thanks.
@#Nicole. For some reason I can see this week being a non-elimination only to have two couples eliminated next week.
@C – Someone is getting eliminated this week, for sure. I’m guessing the votes from last week will be combined with the scores from this week to figure out who’s going. SWITCH WEEK is the week with no elim.
At least Mark did win with his ringers, though. Val can’t say that, and neither could Maks until they pimped the crap out him and used a showmance to get him there.
I don’t think we know, Nicole – and according the the press release (which DWTSGossip confirmed) there IS an elimination tonight.
I wonder if any of Gene Kelly’s children will be there tonight?
I agree that the strength of choreography isn’t solely determined by the skill level of the celeb partner. Val doesn’t need a “bad” partner to prove he is a talented choreographer – I’ve thought the choreography for some of Val’s routines were great, some not so much. I actually think Tony’s choreography for “bad” partners is better than his “good” ones.
In terms of DWTS world, where it matters is how a choreographer can play to the strengths of a particular partner, or cover up flaws – and that’s definitely where Derek is king. But it’s not simply in his choreo that he does it, but in his teaching style – so maybe that’s where the difference lies in how we talk about choreography. He is able to teach AND choreo the widest range of abilities to look great. Additionally, there’s never been a partnership of his that he didn’t have a good connection with them, and that’s important too – he gets all of his women to commit, to excel, and push their own boundaries.
Also, Mark may have only won with ringers, but he’s taken non-dancers to the finals and semi-finals many times, too.
Oh I agree guys, I like Mark a lot and he does know what it takes to get to the finals and to win. Just trying to say everything I said doesn’t technically apply to only Val.
He really does need a girl without dance background for once though, it would be interesting. I don’t count Kelly M because she was a past champion and so has dance as well as DWTS competition experience.
Thanks for the insight (sort of) into tonight’s elimination. The producers are “clear as mud” when it comes to these things. I guess we just have to wait til tonight and find out.
Great post Figamentation, I completely agree. There is a reason why Derek has gone all the way to at least the semi-finals since Season 9 and always made it past the halfway point every time he’s been a pro, stats no other pro has on the show.
When it comes down to it, people vote for a variety of reasons – the best dancer, the best partnership, the most entertaining, or they were a part of their original fanbase, or they think their hot – whatever. Derek has managed to make the most of his partners in all of these areas, whenever he can. No one could ever say he wasted opportunities or abilities, but instead capitalizes on them. He connects with the partner, which in turn pulls in viewer. Even if his partner isn’t my favorite of the season, I do always want to see them every week because I know they’ll make the best of what they have.
I would say that I’m curious to see how he and Bethany grow. I’ll be honest in saying that I am not feeling them yet as a partnership or anything, but I don’t think that’s DEREK’s fault but rather Bethany being the first of his partners that is really rather reserved. He tends to get big personalities to match his own goofy self. I don’t think any of the other pros could be doing any better with her, so I guess that’s the key there. What will probably happen is she’ll have a breakthrough to connect with me and I’ll be fawning all over this partnership, too.
The only issue I have with using last week’s votes is that they were already used once to decide the eliminations in Week 2.
If I had to guess, they’re going to do something completely wacky.
Ugh, they think “they’re” hot. I wish I could edit, haha!
Also, no disrespect to the poster that claimed to know all about Sadie’s dance background – but the person that proclaims to know both about Janel AND Sadie? In this grand world of millions and millions and millions of little girls that dance? From completely different parts of the country? It stretches credulity.
I was discussing DWTS briefly with my new coworker this afternoon. She claims to be a Derek fan but even she stated that he always seems to get experienced partners. I took a few moments to explain to her that no, Maria Menounos, Kellie Pickler, Joanna Krupa were partners that had little to NO dance experience but that he knows how to teach and get them to bring out their best performances every week. She disagreed with me. So even self-proclaimed ‘fans’ think that Derek always gets ringers.
As far as TPTB doing something whacky with eliminations tonight? PLEASE don’t let them do a Twitter vote!
Kind of agree with you there, Fig – I don’t think Bethany has really hit a groove yet. Still think we have yet to see the best we’re going to see out of her – which could beneficial, if she’s able to peak at the right time. So far though, she’s had two decent (but not stellar) performances…could be due to the ankle, could be nerves. But if they play their cards right – I think tonight could be a breakthrough.
On the flip side of the coin, I unfortunately think Alfonso came out of the gate so strong in week 1 that unless he’s able to top himself week after week, people are going to claim he’s “slipping”. Which isn’t really fair, considering that even one of his weaker dances (last week’s samba) is still exponentially stronger than some contestant’s best dances (i.e. Mike, Tavis, etc.) After witnessing the judges’ dismissal of his samba last week, I’m getting a bit concerned that he may not have an easy journey ahead of him – it might actually be easier for Bethany or Janel, who haven’t really peaked yet, and thus don’t have expectations that are quite as high.
People don’t really engage their brains a lot of the time. In DWTS and politics, they just parrot what they’ve heard on TV.
Hehe…I don’t normally waste my time with idiots on the internet who clearly only have a superficial understanding of the show, but I did rip the Daily Mail a new one the other day for perpetuating the delusion that the show is “rigged” for Alfonso to win this season. Because I do, from time to time, enjoy poking morons with sharp sticks 🙂
Yeah I think Alfonso will definitely suffer from peaking too early, and the unrealistic expectations that come with having such a flashy number as your first dance. That doesn’t mean it’s not still his to win – but I think he’s going to have to show some growth somehow throughout the season.
There’s nothing online about Sadie taking dance lessons but I did remember reading a magazine article (US weekly I think?) 2 years when Duck Dynasty just came out where the mother was saying how her oldest daughter used to be a clogger. Nothing about competitive dancing but clogging is pretty much a tradition in the south.
whoops i was going to say “NOT 100% sure”. big mistake. this is all allegedly and i’m hearing this from my friend’s aunt’s colleagues from the dance competition world and i’m also not sure myself if the things i’m hearing are right. and you’re right heidi. i’m not saying it’s a fact. it’s something juicy and all *allegedly*. i’ll leave up to your opinions. i feel like wendy williams saying all of this. i called up the colleague who claimed she judged/saw sadie at a few competitions and stood by her “word” that sadie robertson competed in a couple of group dances and it was mostly clogging and tap. i mentioned that sadie robertson is a common name and how on earth can she remember all of this and it doesn’t say anything on the web about it and she shot back at me with a “how can you trust the internet” and “i can go find the director and show proof of entry.” -___________- i really don’t believe sadie was a competitive dancer but this is lady is agressive.
So apparently Randy and Karina are dancing first… Again! Are they trying to make people forget about Randy’s routines to get rid of him, or what? I don’t like it. I was thinking that maybe Jonathan or Michael would go first but guess not. Grrrr.
vin #192: Weren’t Lindsay and Witney plates?
Court #209: I would totally agree. I’m very nervous for Alfonso. I hope he strikes an emotional chord with the key demo, and I hope he sound waves, because this way, even if he slips, he can still rise.
Yeah I think Lindsay and Jenna were. Another reason to enjoy those costumes
The problem is that people still don’t get how the internet works and how insidious the media is, Kori. Say something ONE TIME and it’s instantly fact all over the net and then we have to correct the misimpressions when they bring them here.
Great example of this is Derek and his current gf – or his gf of a couple weeks ago. Their picture was posted by some paparazzi and she was identified as “mysterious brunette”. Well, Derek fans start speculating ON TWITTER, among themselves, that the woman is Jessica Lee Keller – the girl he danced with in that Macy’s dance at the end of last season that he choreographed with Chris Scott. People who are Chris Scott fans came in and said “no, she’s in the Caribbean (or some place similar) and she’s dating Chris Scott.” Despite that, at least two web sites started reporting that Derek is dating Jessica Lee Kellar.
My point is that if you put it on this site or on twitter, people are looking for that information and will post it as news. People take from this site ALL. THE. TIME. They look at the comments and that’s where they get their stories. Wet Paint in particular is notorious for doing this. They post it – then people believe it to be fact – which is probably where your aggressive friend is getting her information. Someone like yourself speculated somewhere and now it’s fact.
And Access Hollywood conveniently dropped the “exclusive” news that Jonathan & Allison were dancing to “Back to Black” – mere hours after we did. Pure coincidence, I’m sure. Totally exclusive on their part.
The point? The internet is rife with thievery, speculation, fabrication, hyperbole, and “borrowing” of information. As far as I’m concerned, Derek’s dating his dog. 🙂
Anyone know the name of the song played in opening of show tonite 9/29/2014?
@NH – I think it’s “Girl” by Pharrell
Dear @Courtney. Thank you. It was Marilyn Monroe by Pharrel.
Please retire Erin Andrews! As if her voice is not annoying enough, she is
Sarcastic, condescending, and makes inappropriate remarks.
She seems to cause dissent and contention among the dancers.
The look on Tony’s and Val’s faces when Bethany and Derek were receiving the 10’s was priceless 🙂
