PureDWTS Season 19, Week 1 – Power Rankings

Rob Wade, I tip my hat to you, sir…I haven’t enjoyed a first episode of the season this much in a LOOOOONGGGG time 😀  I may have been on the struggle bus in the moments leading up to the premiere, as I had to hunt for a live feed for the first time ever (of course the Colts would play their first Monday Night Football game since 2010 on DWTS premiere night, the year ABC took over MNF from NBC); but the bulk of tonight’s dances more than made up for it.  I quite literally agonized over most of my rankings – with the exception of maybe 2.5 dances that I would consider “not good”, I felt like everyone else really brought their A-game and delivered some solid routines.  This was HARD, guys!

Other random things I enjoyed? The fact that they’re putting a lot more emphasis on the pros’ professional experience, and rattling off various titles they’ve won over the years – I think we sometimes lose sight of the fact that the bulk of our pros are CHAMPIONS in what they do.  Also enjoyable? The fact that they cut the judges off if time was running tight 😎 Honestly, the bulk of what they say is just mindless prattling to me, so I’m more than thrilled that they opted to cut that out in favor of spending more time with the couples.

On with the rankings!

1.) Alfonso & Witney – First of all, a bit of a dorky confession: I may have teared up just a TINY bit watching Alfonso’s jive 😛 Alfonso has been my dream contestant for several years now, and watching him out there just KILLING it and the crowd going nuts felt to me like Heidi probably did watching Derek win his Emmy: I was just so daggone happy for the guy.  It was kind of a dream come true, and he looked like he was having so much fun – so if you’re reading this, Alfonso – thanks for letting me live vicariously through you 🙂 But anyway! As I said on Twitter – still any naysayers out there that think Alfonso isn’t the one to beat this season? 😎 He is just a consummate performer – he was 100% invested in the dance, his technique was as close to perfect as any of the jives tonight, and he really sold the performance.  I won’t dwell too much, but I’m EXTREMELY excited to see what we’re gonna get from these two in the coming weeks…and I’m glad Alfonso seemed to let go & enjoy himself.  Best night I’ve had since finding out he was going to be on the show 😀

2.) Bethany & Derek – One of many pleasant surprises of the evening – and prior to tonight, I had only maybe seen one or two clips of Bethany, so I wasn’t sure quite what to expect; was impressed by how grounded and mature she acts for being only 18.  Was also impressed by how well she handled the jive technique – I agree with Julianne that jive really is kind of cruel in week 1, but Bethany seemed to get the hang of the bounce and did a great job of extending her legs.  I will agree with Carrie Ann, though, too, and say that there were a few points where she seemed to lose a bit of steam – chalk it up to exhaustion or first night jitters, but overall, I think she did a great job and has both room for improvement and some nice momentum for the season.  Plus, she shares a name with my lil sister, so that’s got to be some kind of good karma 😉 Read more..

DWTS Season 19 Week ONE!! Let’s discuss tonight’s show!

Hi kids!! Because there is a results show tomorrow night, this isn’t the usual spoiler post. But we thought you still might want someplace to discuss the show as it happens, etc. So here we are. As soon as Courtney gets her power rankings done, she will likely unstick this post from the top of the page and you can move over there to discuss if you like. Unless you’re off the topic of the couples….then you’ll probably want to stay here for a bit. 🙂 Either way, comment to your hearts contents, as long as you remember the show night rules.

  1. Our server gets totally hosed when people sit at their computer and click “refresh” constantly. Post a comment, then walk away for five minutes so that others have a chance…and so that Courtney and I can actually post on the site. 🙂
  2. THIS SITE IS NOT TWITTER. Do not post like you are on twitter. You get one warning and then I put you in time out. 🙂 We need context and content. Believe it or not there are a lot of people who don’t watch the east coast feed of the show, so they don’t know what the hell you’re talking about when you post a comment that says, “Boy, that sucked.”  If you want to say “____ and ____’s dance was not good at all, crappy choreo” that’s fine. That would be context. It is good. 😀  Remember, if you post five one liners in five minutes, you’ve broken rule number 1. 😉

My first comment of the night is: dammit, four live streams and a digital interview show?? Are you producers trying to hurt my poor little brain that just wants to watch a pretty dance show with hot boys?? SIMPLIFY people. Simplify. I don’t want to watch all that crap, but since I blog for two sites I feel obligated.

Thoughts so far:

Antonio – wooden

Lea – fantastic

Janel – over rated. They spent how much time on Lea’s experience and none on hers?? Not enough content – mugging at the camera, though.

Of course, TPTB put shipper tweets up on the screen for Val and Janel. And Val has started alluding to it. :::rolls eyes:::

Oh god, lolo.  Screw up and then talk too much.  Thank god for Tom Bergeron. I’m sorry, but the 6’s were generous.

Tony….PROPS ARE BAD. You and Betsey were doing so well up to then!!

Tavis did okay but I think Jules might have gotten into CAI’s crack. 😀

Sadie is soooo cute.

Rick Schroder in the audience…

Michael, I love you. “My onesie gave me a wedgie!”

OMG – I love Tommy Chong. That was amazing. Nice guest appearance by Cheech!!

Holy crap – Randy and Karina!! We got a competition, folks. Between the good dancers and the fun characters? Wow. Tough season.

Great job by Bethany!! And we had that freakin’ song right the first time!!!  Courtney texted me a “DAMMIT”. 🙂  Very cute dance….I think she will be a contender if she can loosen up a bit.

Well, this could be a six way race to the trophy with Alfonso leading the way, followed by Randy, Lea, Sadie and Bethany.

Great first show everyone!! Courtney is coming up before too long with the Power Rankings!!

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Karina Smirnoff Describes Dancing With The Stars Season 19 As “A Cast Of Characters”

Karina Smirnoff tells People Magazine that she thinks this season of Dancing With The Stars “will be very surprising for viewers”. She also calls it a “cast of characters”. Below is more including her thoughts on partner Randy Couture.

The biggest challenge is, I don’t think Randy realizes how strong he is, because if he goes full out 100 percent, I have to cling onto him like a koala bear, because if I don’t, I’ll be flying away. We need to really concentrate on being gentle.

The first week we’re doing the fox-trot, which is a very smooth, elegant dance. It will be a nice change to see Randy do a dance like that rather than fighting or being in movies as an action hero.

I personally always love to tell a story within a dance. It’s not just about the moves; the moves mean something. I’ve created a whole story for Randy and he loves it. He’s a leading man who will be taking care of his woman, and I think he’s doing a fabulous job at it!

I spent some time with the cast, and this is an incredible cast. It’s a cast of characters, from Lea Thompson to Tommy Chong to Alfonso Ribeiro. I think this season will be very surprising for the viewers.

Michael Waltrip Talks On Dancing And Racing, What Dale Earnhardt Jr. Thinks

Michael Waltrip talked with Auto Racing Daily about Dancing With The Stars and his first couple of weeks of training. While dancing he’s hoping to bring new fans to racing. Below is more including thoughts from Dale Earnhardt Jr…..

“Well, it’s been amazing,” Waltrip said of his first couple weeks of training for the show. “I agreed — we got together about two weeks ago and were able to finalize the details of being on the show. It was kind of challenging because obviously owning a team is first always for me, it’s my main focus to me, it’s what means the most to me. Having partners like Janssen and Aaron’s and 5-hour ENERGY and taking care of their needs is really important.

“We looked at this at Michael Waltrip Racing as a way to expand our brand and talk about NASCAR to millions of people that might not know as much about our sport as we would like them to. The opportunity to go to LA and dance is something that I’m very serious about and I can’t wait for my opportunity to get on the dance floor with Emma (Slater), my partner. To me it’s bigger than just that, it’s more about this sport and continuing to try to grow our team at MWR to the millions of people that will be watching ‘Dancing With the Stars.’

“It’s interesting, when I walk into the coffee shop near my apartment in North Carolina, everyday there’s people in there sitting and I figure a few of them know who I am because I’m kind of tall and am a race car driver and I’m in North Carolina. Everybody just smiles and I get my coffee, but now when I go there, those people that I thought knew who I was are all like, ‘Golly, can’t wait to watch you dance.’ Those are things I never thought I’d hear — those words.

It’s like Dale (Earnhardt) Jr. said on Jimmy Kimmel the other night. They said, ‘What do you think about Michael dancing on ‘Dancing With the Stars?’ He said, ‘Could you repeat that back to me one more time? I still haven’t gotten my arms all the way around that.’ And, that’s fair. I never have been a dancer and got into it that much, but over the last two weeks I’ve taken a crash course and it’s a good thing for my partner Emma is that the sheet was blank. The thing that I know for sure, when the music starts and it’s time for me to start dancing, I can’t take three or four steps and say, ‘Hold on a minute.’ It’s live and real, it’s just like a NASCAR race — when they throw the green, you’ve gotta go.”

Will this goofy guy — and as a fellow-Kentucky native, I mean that in the best possible way — draw more fans to NASCAR? I’m not sure. I mean, I watch the show, and I didn’t magically become a figure skating fan after watching Meryl Davis and Charlie White last season. But I don’t guess it could hurt.

Will NASCAR fans who didn’t previously watch Dancing with the Stars watch this season, because Michael’s on the show? Maybe, maybe not.

Whether NASCAR or DWTS benefits from this cross-pollenation is unknown, but one thing’s for sure, I’m betting Waltrip will be entertaining to watch. He does look rather goofy (in an entertaining way) in the promos, and I distinctly remember him saying something about skid marks during the big cast reveal on Good Morning America. Just hope he wasn’t talking about THAT kind of skid marks, and I think most of you know what kind of skid marks I’m talking about.

To read the full interview, see Auto Racing Daily. Also, Amy Purdy sent Michael and Emma some advice. See below! So cute! Here’s to Michael and Emma tonight! Read more..

More Details On How Dancing With The Stars Will Be Aired Tonight, Rob Wade Comments

On Friday, ABC released some show details for how Dancing With The Stars will be aired tonight in terms of the level of interactivity. ABC.com will be offering five live streams from key positions at the show venue, allowing fans to choose views of the Red Room, judges, sky box, a wide angle of the dance floor and a hosted feed that will highlight relevant social media conversations. Below is more information from USA Today and Executive Producer Rob Wade. This is going to be cool and it’s going to be fun to see Lacey Schwimmer again too. Pic above courtesy of Mandy Moore.

During the premiere, ABC.com will offer four live-streaming backstage cameras and a simultaneous digital show called Dancing with the Stars: All Access hosted by Dominic Bowden and Lacey Schwimmer. The live streams are meant to be consumed as a second-screen complement to the television broadcast.

“You’ll see a lot of the stuff that happens backstage during the show and during the commercial breaks,” said Dancing with the Stars executive producer Rob Wade. “Really what you see on the show is only half the story so we felt like it was something that really gave you all-access to our cast.”

The backstage cameras will feature views of the judges, skybox, backstage Red Room, and the lower balcony. Online viewers will be able to choose which camera to stream. The simulcast digital program will feature commentary and interviews during commercial breaks as well.

In addition to the live streams, viewers will be able to keep tabs on couple’s rehearsals throughout the week. Raw rehearsal footage as well as original digital content will be uploaded to abc.com every week.
