DWTS13 Freestyle Retrospective: The Top 10 Best Freestyles in DWTS History

So the other day, we counted down the top 10 worst freestyles in DWTS history, and re-lived some of the biggest stinkers we’ve seen in 12 seasons. Today we’ve saved the best for last: the showstoppers, the jaw-droppers, and the dynamite freestyles that have set the bar for all the freestyles to follow. 🙂

Some patterns we’ve noticed: most of these routines are high-energy, use recognizable songs, and have either a theme or a general “feel” for the celebs to connect to. It’s a pattern that seems to work – let’s hope this season’s finalists stick to it!

Heidi’s Note: You’ll also note that you have a better shot of making this list if your name if Johnson, Hough, or Ballas.  Possibly Schwimmer – she’s one for two, isn’t she??

10. Kyle Massey & Lacey Schwimmer, season 11

Courtney: This is a good example of a hip-hop freestyle actually working out well – basically the polar opposite of Lacey’s ill-fated hip-hop freestyle with Lance. This time around, the song & theme fit her partner to a T – Kyle LOVED “Tootsie Roll”, and it really showed. Now while the choreo wasn’t really all that complicated, it was the fact that Kyle just milked each step for all its worth that really made it fun – I swear, I think the only more charismatic contestant to ever do the show is Carson. 😛 Kyle had swaaaaaag, and was a true showman…and it didn’t hurt that he wasn’t too shabby a dancer, either.

Heidi: The thing that made this work was that it fit Kyle to a tee and he LOVED it. He was having the time of his life and he had the skills to pull off a hip hop routine. You combine that with some pretty clever choreography and you have a brilliant freestyle. He’d be much farther up on my list…but this is surprisingly hard to come up with and putting them in order? Impossible! Anyway, when I stand up off the couch and cheer, you know it’s good. And this one was also FUN in all caps. 🙂 Read more..

DWTS13 Who Danced it Better? The “Most Memorable Year” Edition

As many of you may have noticed, costumes aren’t the only things that get reused on DWTS – songs get recycled as well, sometimes ad infinitum! After oodles of requests from you guys for a feature like this, I’ve finally carved out the time to sit down and make it happen 🙂 Marianya actually used to do these posts awhile back – if you go to the search bar and type in “dance comparison”, you’ll see several editions she did for season 10.  Heidi & I are going to try and do it as well as she did, but you know us – if it doesn’t involve snark, we probably have the attention span of goldfish. 🙂

Battle of Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love”

This was actually the VERY FIRST song ever used on DWTS, when Joey McIntyre & Ashly Costa (née Delgrosso) danced their cha-cha to it back in season 1…

After that, it didn’t pop until again until 10 seasons later, as the opening pro number for the 200th episode results show in season 11:

And of course, most recently, Kristin chose it as her “most memorable year” song for her samba with Mark:

Court’s take: I was pleasantly surprised at how the band managed to tweak the beat to feel more “samba-y” for Kristin, but as much as she tried to shake her booty and flip her hair – she just didn’t manage to fully embody Beyonce’s swag. Loved Joey & Ashly’s attitude for their cha-cha, although in retrospect Joey was probably not as good as I thought he was back then – the standard of competition has definitely gone up in 13 seasons 😉 But for me the real standout was the 200th episode pro dance; loved the fact that we saw multiple styles in it (cha-cha, quickstep, a little bit of samba) as well as a TON of pros from the past coming, almost literally, out of the woodwork – all the usual suspects, as well as some rarer ones like Anna D., Corky, Ashly, & even Inna (remember her?) While they may have a bit of an unfair edge…gotta give it to the pros in this one.  That dance was HOT.

Battle of No Doubt’s “It’s My Life”

First, Louie Vito had it for his foxtrot with Chelsie in season 9:

And of course, our favorite fashionista, Carson, tangoed to it with Anna for his “most memorable year” dance:

Court’s take: Poor Louie never stood a chance against the fabulousity of Carson 😛 Plus the song just feels better as a tango for me.

Battle of Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon”

Fittingly, it was astronaut Buzz Aldrin’s foxtrot with Ashly in season 10…

And then Rob honored his late dad with the song when he foxtrotted with Cheryl to it this week:

Court’s take: While I thought Buzz was adorable, his age kinda limited his range of motion – and by extension, the tempo of the music he danced to.  It just felt so slooooow.  I actually really enjoyed Rob’s – it was light and carefree, and Rob looked like he really connected to the song and enjoyed himself.

So whose renditions of these songs do YOU guys prefer? 🙂

PureDWTS Rants & Raves: To Lift or Not to Lift?

For those of you that follow me on Twitter, you may have noticed me “getting up on my soapbox” the past few weeks regarding something that has been debated from several different angles around PureDWTS: lifts.  We’ve casually kicked around the pros & cons of them: do they enhance the routine, or are they just filler? Should they be required? Should they be prohibited? Are they safe? What exactly constitutes a lift, anyway? Well here it is, kids – the place where we can really get down to the nitty-gritty of lifts.

My sudden fixation with the topic started about 2 weeks ago, while watching a movie with my boyfriend (who, as many of you know, is a pro ballroom dancer/teacher).  He kept squirming around, trying to get comfortable, and failing.  Finally, getting annoyed with all his wiggling, I asked what was wrong.  “Oh, I just strained my neck a little bit doing a lift with one of my students today.  It’s just a little sore.” Seemed benign enough – minor soreness from doing a new lift.  But over the course of the next week, the pain intensified, to the point where he was unable to turn his head to the right AT ALL, and had to turn his whole body to face me when I was talking (which was actually kind of cool, since it made me think  he was just really listening to me intently ;-)) and had to institute a temporary ban on lifting at the dance studio. He iced it.  He put a heating pad on it.  He stretched it. He used a special neck pillow. He took some Tylenol. He went and got 3 massages in one week – all to little avail.  Things were starting to take their toll on both of us, as my bf was in too much pain to ride his motorcycle, sit upright for very long, or do any sort of vigorous activity. Finally, at the recommendation of one of his students (and me, as I had been HOUNDING him about it), he finally went to the chiropractor last Friday, and after taking one look at my bf’s x-ray, the chiropractor exclaimed “Ooh, no wonder you’ve been in pain – your C4 & C5 vertebrae are wayyyy out of alignment!” A few minutes with the TENS unit and some adjusting with the chiropractor later, he was FINALLY experiencing some relief.  That was a week ago – he’s been to the chiro a few more times since then, and he’s probably 85% better. But the no-lift rule at the studio still stands until he’s back to 100% and gets the all-clear from the chiropractor.

So the most obvious question brought up by my bf’s dilemma is “Are lifts safe?” The answer: no.  Read my lips: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A “SAFE” LIFT. Sure, there are techniques to make them safer, and some are clearly safer than others, but all lifts are inherently dangerous, as there is always going to be the risk of injury from falling or being fallen on, as well as other sprains, strains, and even breaks from trying to correct a fall that is already in motion.  In fact, the very appeal of lifts is in the danger – the awe-spiring risk of doing them in the first place, and often the romantic notion of the delicate lady being in harm’s way, but protected by the strong arms of a handsome male lead.  No wonder all of my boyfriend’s students want lifts in their showcase routines! 😉

Which brings up the next question: should they even be doing lifts in the first place? Obviously, it’s always going to be safer for a couple already experienced in lifting to be doing lifts (check out Eric Luna & Georgia Ambarian, the current world champions in the theater arts division), and it’s a downright TERRIBLE idea for two inexperienced individuals to start attempting them without the guidance and supervision of someone with experience (this is a good example of people that should NOT being doing lifts!).  But both my boyfriend’s predicament and that of the couples on DWTS is a bit more of a grey area – the situation where only half of the couple is experienced. In this particular case, I’m a firm believer that the more experienced member of the partnership is the one more likely to get hurt, regardless of gender.  Since they’re experienced, they’re going to be more likely to be hurt by the rookie mistakes of their partner, and more likely to try & protect their partner from harm…and possibly injure themselves as a result.  My boyfriend is a good example of this, as his neck injury was the result of him compensating for a student who couldn’t quite get the right leverage to get up onto his shoulder; Kym’s neck injury this past season is also a good example, as it was Hines who lost his balance and fell onto Kym, likely due to pure inexperience.  Toni Redpath (a former Australian ballroom champion & a frequent guest judge/choreographer on SYTYCD) did a great video blog a few weeks back (thanks for pointing this out, Evaine! Quite timely ;-)) which did a good job of explaining why lifts are allowed in ballroom routines on SYTYCD but not on DWTS – and the biggest reason was *drumroll* EXPERIENCE.  All the dancers on SYTYCD have some experience with dance, which makes the transition to lifting quite a bit smoother for them than a celebrity with zero dance experience. Not only does it make life a bit easier on the celebs, but it keeps the couples safer, too.

But let’s say experience is not an issue.  From a choreographic standpoint, should everybody be peppering lifts into their routines? I certainly don’t think so.  Heidi always brings up an interesting argument whenever someone starts comparing ballroom on SYTYCD to ballroom on DWTS and the subject of lifts comes up: when used in excess, lifts tend be a bit of a cop-out, choreographically. It can often let bad dancers get away with not really dancing, and results in a routine that is more “flash & trash” than meat-and-potatoes dance steps – and can end up looking NOTHING like the dance it’s meant to portray.  The best example of this that I can think of is Channing & Philip’s samba from season 6 of SYTYCD.  While not inherently “bad”, the routine only has a few basic samba steps in it, and the rest was a lot of shimmying and (rather clumsily-executed) lifts.  Of course the video cuts out before the judges give their commentary, but I distinctly remember Adam actually calling out the choreographers on this one for making the routine “too lifty”.  I feel like lifts can also interrupt the “flow” of a dance if not placed properly – for a lift to work choreographically, I think it has to have proper timing & musicality, and have very fluid transitions in & out of it.  Otherwise you end up with routines like Channing & Philip’s, which feels jerky & disjointed – “Look I’m doing samba, I’m doing samba, I’m doing samba…ooh now I’m stopping samba & doing a lift…aaaaaand I’m back to dancing samba…STOP! time for another lift-and more samba….” It’s just visually…displeasing. Now don’t get me wrong – a few well-placed, well-executed lifts can enhance a routine.  A great example is Riccardo Cocchi & Yulia Zagoruychenko’s samba showdance from the 2009 America’s Ballroom Challenge (does the move at 1:06 look familiar? Derek used it at the end of his samba with Nicole ;-)).  Only one lift, and they ended up winning the showdance category, over 5 other couples – most of whom had more lifts. IMHO, you don’t need lifts to make ANY routine on DWTS (including the freestyle) look good.  Derek had no choice but to come up with alternatives to lifts in season 11, when Jennifer made it clear from day 1 that her neck injury made lifting an impossibility – and they still managed to win, and create some very memorable routines while they were at it. Their lift-minimal Argentine tango still stands out to me as one of the best we’ve ever had on the show.

So the bf & I were talking about lifts at-length the other night, and he said something that stuck with me: “You know, DWTS is great for the attention it has brought to ballroom dancing & all, but it’s really left some people with an unrealistic idea of what ballroom is and isn’t.” He went on to explain that he gets new students in the studio who are frustrated upon finding out that they won’t be dancing eye-catching routines like the ones on TV right off the bat, and many of them seem more concerned with costumes & music than technique & solid choreography.  I can imagine it gets very frustrating for dance teachers like him – especially when the demand for flashy nuances like lifts necessitates them risking their own safety.  The format of DWTS has actually forced my bf’s studio to start doing more showcase routines with their students (as opposed to focusing on good technique for competition) – and as my bf puts it, “every single one of my ladies wants lifts in her routine – and if they think one of the other ladies has more/better lifts, they’ll ask for more.  It’s KILLING me!” And me as well, since he often comes home cranky & sore and barely able to move…let alone do other activities. 😉

So I’ve said my piece with regards to lifts…what do you guys think? LAY IT ON ME 😀

Pure DWTS – “Calm Before The Storm” Weekend Media In The News

“You come out and show me a proper dance. I’m fed up, Maks, with shirts coming off.” – Dancing with the Stars judge Len Goodman

Remember that one? LOL I am so missing this show, are you? It’s the “calm before the storm” though. I can feel it.

So, first up in some weekend updates, a reminder to watch “Miss America” Saturday night on ABC. Brooke Burke will be helping to host. Tony Dovolani will be one the judges. He’s going to have his work cut out for him. You can see some of the contestants below presenting themselves on the Las Vegas Strip outside of the Planet Hollywood with Boys To Men as the Master of Ceremony.

Cheryl has been so busy. Along with her “Forever Tango” tour, she’s also offering free dance lessons for local teens at Burke’s Mountain View, California ballroom on Jan. 12th. More details below and a promotional picture of her from Mountainview.patch.com. (are her shoes not cute, or what? 🙂 )

Keep your dance card open for Monday, when “Dancing with the Stars” two-time champion Cheryl Burke and fellow dancers from the hit musical Forever Tango will appear at her Mountain View ballroom. From 6-11:30 p.m. Burke and her troupe will host free dance classes for teenagers from local schools. This fundraiser will benefit “The Dance Club Mountain View,” a program developed by the nonprofit Mountain View Police Activities League and Cheryl Burke Dance Mountain View.

For those of you missing Alec and Edyta like myself (cries, please bring these two back!!), here they are opening the show for the Everett Dance Competition in California last month.

Mark was interviewed by The News Herald this week in promotion for his new album “HurtLoveBox”. He also mentions dancing which you can read on below. Be sure to read the link for the full story and interview.

When asked what dance he would perform to each of his solo songs, Ballas graciously said “Faith” would be a rumba, while “The Way You Work” would be a tango. Welcome to Ballas’s world, where despite his best efforts to get his music career off the ground the reality is his popularity orbit remains steadfastly “Dancing With the Stars”-based.

There’s something about Ballas’ personality that has allowed him to become the go-to professional dancer for contestants with, if not baggage then, interesting pop culture history.

“I try to not pay attention to the media,” Ballas said. “When I meet the person I go in with a clean slate and just meet them and take them for what they really are and who they really are rather than what people perceive and write about them. So I had great partners. I’ve never had one rude or obnoxious.”

Mark also taught a “Master Class” for “Dare to Dance” in Cincinnati, Ohio while he was there this past week. The donations went to help his foundation which helps suicide preventation and mental health awareness.

And just a mention on Paula Abdul’s new show “Live To Dance” for those of you who watched the show this past week and were discussing it in other posts. Apparently the ratings weren’t very good on the second night. This source is calling it a “flop”. 🙁 From Robot Celeb.

On Tuesday night the show debuted to 10.3 million viewers. That is about half the size of the audience that American Idol gets, but still it was a decent number and not a terrible starting place. On Wednesday the show aired the second half of the premiere and finished off the first round of auditions. It also lost about 23% of its audience. Viewership plummeted to around 8 million viewers. It finished fourth in its timeslot behind The People’s Choice Awards, Modern Family and Law & Order: SVU. Worse yet was its collapse in ratings among the much coveted 18-49 year old demographic. Here it dropped about 25% from a 2.4 rating on Tuesday to a 1.8 on Wednesday. Essentially, that means that almost all of their loss in viewers was in the 18-49 age range. Not a good sign.

I would expect it to get worse in coming weeks. In two weeks the show will play head to head with the much anticipated debut of American Idol. That will most likely draw more of her viewers away.

If there is a silver lining to the clouds it is that that Live to Dance is just a short run show scheduled to end in mid-February so the odds are that they won’t cancel her mid-season. No matter how badly things could get they will probably let her finish out the full season. They have already committed much of the money by building her the dome building and finding the contestants. What is left will be pretty cheap in comparison.

I don’t know that this loss is ratings is the announcement of the death of Live to Dance, but it certainly proves one thing for sure. Paula Abdul clearly didn’t have the much of an influence on the success of American Idol.

Ok Dancettes, that is all for now!! Have a super weekend! 😉 xxx

Pure DWTS – New Years Dancing Media

Just a few things to share with you on this day before New Years Eve. First up, Cheryl Burke is interviewed by CBS Sunday in San Francisco on her dance role in “Forever Tango”. Luis Bravo (the creator and director) is also interviewed. The clips of Cheryl dancing look fantastic.

From the Bay Sunday facebook page, here the two are again;

Louis posted this picture on his twitter of himself, Jay D Schwartz, Karina, Jonathan, and Anna in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico celebrating Anna’s birthday at the Casa Dorada Hotel. The four dancers will be performing for the The Barefoot Formal NYE Event on New Year’s Eve. What a beautiful place to spend the holiday.

Speaking of holiday, Maks and Derek are having the time of their lives. Maks has been travelling all through out Europe as most of you know who are following him at Twitter. He’s been posting pictures every time he changes destinations. Rumor has it that Derek has been in Europe as well and is now in S. Africa. Other than this tweet, nothing can be verified and this is all we have from him. Heidi HELP!! *cries* lol (Heidi: LOL – a number of fans have been photographed with Cheryl Cole in South Africa and they all said Derek is with her – it’s all over twitter now. Poor Derek, breaking some Cheryl fans’ hearts – they turn ugly when that happens. LOL)

From all the reality Shows this past year, who was the judgiest judge or crankiest contestant of the year? Well, TV Squad has picked Bruno as one of the crankiest judges. You can see who else made the cut and why at the link. (personally, I would have chosen Carrie Ann over Bruno as most cranky!)

Michael Bolton Demands Apology from ‘Dancing’ Judge: On ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ judge Bruno Tonioli called Michael Bolton’s jive with Chelsea Hightower the worst “in 11 seasons.” Bolton was stunned by Tonioli’s harsh tone and felt the Italian judge “let everybody down,” including his 90-year-old mother, who was sitting in the audience. “You heard the tone. Even Len [Goodman] stopped him and said, ‘That’s inappropriate,'” he said. “I think he should apologize publicly and he should be reprimanded for it.”

Ok, that is all for now. Happy New Year Everyone and don’t forget to dance like there is no tomorrow. 😉 xxx

DWTS – Dancing Media Before Christmas 2010

We’re inching closer and closer to Christmas. What are your plans for the holidays? I’ll be chilling at home with hubby and all of my pets. Did I tell you we took a stray cat in last summer? We promised she’d never have to fend for herself ever again and she’d always have a home. Well, she ended up being pregnant and had 3 kittens one month later in August. 😮 So, we’ve promised them too that they’d always have a home. lol Needless to say, we will be very busy caring and playing with them all this holiday and they are a gas. 🙂

In media things to start out your Christmas week, we have a cool new picture of Cheryl with her “Forever Tango” partner Jorge Antonio Ezequiel from the San Francisco Examiner.

Here is a nice take from the article.

“I had to work really hard and focus,” she says of the grueling three-week rehearsals. “I had to learn from the beginning — from learning how to walk and the Argentine tango hold and really just interpreting the music.”

But it was certainly worth the sweat. The Bay Area-native had a personal investment in being in the show. Burke was first inspired to further pursue dance after seeing a touring production of “Forever Tango” in The City when she was a kid.

“I’ve been ballroom dancing since I was 11 years old, ballet since I was 4,” she says, “but ‘Forever Tango’ inspired me to learn how to dance, especially partner dancing, and from then on, it’s been something I really wanted to do.”

It’s also been something millions want to see.

The original production was cheered by San Francisco audiences in 1994. It played an unprecedented 92 weeks. It later hit Broadway in 1997 and played for 14 months.

Bravo, its creator and director, was revered for how well he featured world-renowned dancers with musicians and for how it morphed into a hypnotic show-stopping sensation. It’s now the longest running tango show in Broadway history. It last graced The City back in 2008.

Bravo’s outing has 12 dancers, a vocalist and an 11-piece onstage orchestra, including the bandoneón — an accordion-like instrument that is a staple in tango music. Music, dance and vignettes trace the tango’s history — from the bordellos to acceptance in society.

“Argentine tango is very detailed,” Burke says. “It’s not just about learning the steps. It’s about how you move from foot to foot; how you interact with your partner. Every single thing you do has to tell a story and it has to be clear to the people that are watching.”

This show starts tomorrow in San Francisco and then it will travelling to Monterey, CA. Jan. 13th. Read The Californian for more details and ticket information.

Maks just posted a new picture of himself at an old Gladiator stadium on Twitter today. If anyone knows of where this stadium might be, let us know. He is looking well and happy, isn’t he?!

There is a new interview with Karina at I Need My Fix discussing her new work out video. She also talks of her future plans in clothing, costume design, being a Mom, and her dream to be like “Jennifer Lopez”. Here is a take. I didn’t realize she helped choreograph the dances in “Shall We Dance”…one of my favorite all time dance movies. Be sure to read the link for more.

INMF: Where do you see yourself in five years?
KARINA: With a couple of kids a boy and a girl. Dancing With The Stars, if it’s still around, something in this industry. I’m probably one of the biggest fans of Jennifer Lopez. I think she’s had an amazing career from dancer to singer to actress to business woman. I think she’s an inspiration, and it’s not like she came from a family where her dad was a producer and her mom was a studio executive. She came from the Bronx.

She came from a normal neighbourhood and she worked her butt off and she got to the very top and she’s gorgeous. I’m kind of hoping to follow her steps anyways possible even if they are just tiny little footsteps.

I actually got to meet her because I did ‘Shall We Dance’ the movie that she did with Richard Gere. I actually choreographed and I taught Jennifer and Richard Gere and I had a small part in it. I got to meet her and interact with her and even though it’s been so many years, I think the movie was out in 2001, and up until now, every time she sees me on the carpet or at the events she will come up and say hi. She is so down-to-earth.

I don’t want to come up to her and say ‘hey, do you remember me’ because I don’t know if she is busy or what. But she always waves or says hi or lets me know that she knows I’m there and says hi to me. I think it’s so admirable at the stature that she’s at, she’s SO down-to-earth.

And here is a picture of her showing off her engagement ring as well.

Speaking of cool pictures of our dancers, don’t miss seeing this Gallery of pics TV GUIDE released of “Season 11 Most Sexiest Looks” >>>> HERE . There are 13 fun pictures. If you were to pick your very favorite, which would it be? Mine would be a toss up between Maks and Brandy in #5 and Derek and Jen in #7(those leg splits will get me every time 🙂 ). Thanks to Heidi and Pure Derek Hough for this tip.

Ok, more later! Dont stop with those Christmas Dreams, safe travels, and much love to All!! 😉 xxx

DWTS – ‘Dance With Me’ Ho Ho, Can’t Get You Out Of My Head Media

Well, I hope you are really behaving yourselves now because Santa has a very close eye on all of you. Whether your dancing dreams come true or not remains to be seen. But, for now, he wants to know your “Dream Cast For Professional Dancers” for Season 12 and then he will see if he can make that wish come true. Pick 12 or 13 dancers. I will tell you my “Dream Cast” of pros at the end of this post.

And while you are thinking on that question (take your time because you don’t want to mess up and forget anyone 🙂 ), here are some news bits out there. First, Brooke Burke talks sex and keeping fit in “Shape” magazine. Here is the cover and a take for what’s inside this current issue from Fox Entertainment.

“You need to be healthy,” Burke says. “That means exercising to relieve stress and build energy. It truly is good for your sex drive to work out.”

Of her relationship with her partner, actor David Charvet, she makes a confession:

“I’ll fess up here,” she said. “Sometimes we’re so tired, it’s just a glass of wine and a good night’s sleep. But the point is that we’re making a commitment to each other saying, ‘We love the kids, but we matter too,” she said.

She also confessed that she has done a few crazy diets in her day.

“I’ve tried just about every crazy diet you can imagine. But now I’ve learned what really works for my body. I also eat five small meals a day. And I never skip breakfast, even if it’s just a protein shake.”

Cheryl Burke has a new book coming out on Feb. 14th called “Dancing Lessons: How I Found Passion and Potential on the Dance Floor and in Life”. It chronicles her life as a dancer since she was 4. You can read more and pre-order it now at Amazon. Here is the cover.

In other Dancing things, here is Mark Ballas rehearsing and giving an interview in Houston for “Burn The Floor”. You can see his dance partner Giselle Peacock too. His dad Corky is interviewed as well. Corky talks about how he always thought Ballroom Dancing was a “sleeping giant”. So true!

Here Mark is debuting his new album “HurtLoveBox” as well. Not bad I must say for the little bit we’re hearing. What do you think?

Mark and Cheryl aren’t the only dancers with off season projects. As reported earlier, Edyta Sliwinska, Alec Mazo, Jonathan Roberts, and Anna Trebunskaya will be dancing in “Ballroom with a Twist” at the El Portal Theatre in LA from January 19-Feburary 13. Also, Gilles Marini and Jane Seymour will be rotating hosts during the LA premiere. You can read more and get ticket information at Theatre Mania.

Speaking of Edyta and Alec, she just posted this picture on her Twitter today. So cute. I miss these two on the show.

If you haven’t seen Maks’ “Dance With Me USA” site lately, be sure to take a look. You can see a cool video of him goofing around and dancing. Val, his brother, dances too and plays the violin. You can also read details for how to get private lessons with Tony Dovolani.

In other Maks news, he posted an update on his blog for why he is doing “The Bachelor” in the Ukraine currently. Personally, I don’t think he owes anyone as explanation on that. But, here is some of what he wrote. You can read it in full at the link.

First thing first. I AM doing the Ukrainian version of our “Bachelor”. The fact that I’ve turned down the American version has NOTHING to do with my ‘dislike’ of American women (the statement is so absurd that I can’t believe I’m even dignifying it with a reply). My reasons for doing it:

1) This is the first time since I was 15 that I have few months without any physical activity. I am truly tired. I’ve realized it this past season and can’t tell you how hard it was for me to get through it. The person that helped me was Brandy and for that I am forever grateful to her. She truly was god-sent and I will never forget everything she did for me. Without her help I would probably not have lasted though all the injuries, ‘media issues’ and my grandmother’s death.

2) The idea that I would find ‘the one’ on a TV show is something that I can’t ever fathom, but after speaking to producers I have realized that a show where characters are doing it solely for TV exposure simply would not work. Our audience would not understand it and the show would be a disaster. There has never been a show such as this in Ukraine and it makes me think that a first season would be the most ‘real’ as far as participant’s perception of ‘what its all about’ is concerned. I thought about everything VERY long. I’ve spoken to my family. I’ve spoken to people around me and decided that this might be something to try and see ‘how it’ll work’. I’m going into this with a thought of ‘why not?’. I know it’s hard to find someone you can connect to on a project like this, but nothing is impossible. For the sake of the show I can’t reveal anything, but I must say I am very pleasantly surprised so far.

3) I feel good about the fact that I can ‘give back’. My family and I left when I was very young and to have made something of myself. To come back here as a person to be looked up to is an amazing feeling. I have been speaking to lots of people for whom my family and I are an example of what is possible, and I feel great that I can help ‘direct’ young people’s drives to better themselves while the government here is figuring everything out. It is not an easy living here. Kids don’t have as many opportunities as I had and people aren’t looking at me with a frown but with pride.

4) This might be the most important reason of all. This is the first thing in a VERY LONG TIME that I’m doing for ME. For the first time I don’t really care what people think. First time that I’m not being ‘judged’, ‘placed’ or ‘criticized’ (well, maybe criticized, but you know what I mean). My profession required me to do things to ‘please’ others. Be it audience, judges, my coaches, etc. Maybe if I weren’t such a stubborn person and didn’t have such strong opinion about everything I would ‘please’ everyone better and would have achieved more in my life. But, I am who I am…

There isn’t much news to report on Derek right now and some of us are in serious Derek with drawals. lol. But, hey he made it to #10 in a “Best Celebrity Hair” Poll at the NowMagazine.com.

DWTS Season 11 – The Myth of Bristol

Okay, I threatened to do this a while ago and now I’m doing it. I’m putting my fingers to the key board to answer the question – how did Bristol last as long as she did? Was it really a Tea Party, or just dumb luck and silly judges?

This post isn’t really even about Bristol herself – it’s about the judges scores versus the voting. People always claim that the judges scores mean nothing. Well, bull, they’re worth 50% – it’s the judges who decide whether they mean very little or if they mean A LOT. The way the judges scored most of this season, they were irrelevant. When push came to shove, in the finale, they got their act together. I argue that it should happen sooner – like Week 7 or so.

Okay, with that out of the way, let’s get back to business with a recap:

Week 1 – The Departure of The Hoff

I consider this the first, and one of the bigger, shocks of the season.  But maybe German’s didn’t realize they can indeed vote on DWTS, if they are properly educated on how to do so. 🙂 Anyway, the bottom scorers this week were:

– The Hoff, 15
– The Sitch, 15
– Margaret, 15
– Michael, 16
– Florence, 18
– Bristol, 18

So, that one really shouldn’t have been a shock, as he was one of the low scorers.  No surprise that Bristol stayed, much surprise that Margaret stayed. 🙂  Bristol had a whole lot of people with lower scores (and less infamy) than her.

Week 2 – Dog Houses are very, very bad.

Michael Bolton and Chelsie Hightower exit the competition after a thorough humiliation. One that was hard to watch indeed.  The bottom scorers were:

– Michael, 12
– Margaret, 18
– The Situation, 18
– Florence, 19

See, the judges were already giving Bristol 22 at this point for dancing that wasn’t that good. You expect me to believe that Bristol was only 2 points behind Jennifer Grey, who did a seriously kick ass jive?? Sorry, but nope.  In any case, Bristol was never in any danger thanks to overscoring AND people who were worse than her. Anyway, Michael was no great shock really, now that I think about it.  A 12 is very hard to overcome when the next lowest was an 18.  He had to get 27,000 more votes per million votes cast in order to stick around.

Week 3 – Rainbows are bad too??

Nah, not really. Louis was saying on Twitter that Margaret going the gay pride route was what did her in, but what I really think happened was that after that first dance no one took her seriously. She lasted as long as she did because The Hoff and The Bolton were so much worse.  I don’t think gay pride had anything to do with it – but maybe I’m naïve.   The bottom scorers were:

– Margaret, 18
– Bristol, 19
– Florence, 20
– The Sitch, 20

Now we see Bristol hit the bottom 2 in scores – but Margaret is the low scorer, here. No great stretch. Marge needed 4,500 votes to catch Bristol (chump change) and there is no way that was happening. No shocks here.

Week 4 – Here’s the Situation as I see it

Poor Situation, and by extension, poor Courtney. 🙂 He did well making it to the fourth week though, I have to say. The bottom scorers this week were:

– Situation, 28
– Bristol, 32
– Florence, 34
– Kurt, 35

Again, we see Bristol insulated by a 4 point cushion – not a huge number, but she’s not the low scorer and Sitch was a worse dancer. For the Situation to stay, he had to get 11,200 more votes than Bristol per 1 million votes cast.  Say thank you to your judges, because they are charting the course of Season 11 history here.  That 4 points isn’t huge – but it still counts.  No great shock that Bristol stuck around when put up against a relative unknown (to DWTS audience) guy who is 4 points behind her. And him being the worse dancer helped. 🙂

Week 5 – Serious Monkey Business

This is the week where the wheels fell off, IMO.  I dare say that Michael Bolton was more than a little irate to see Bristol wear a Monkey suit and still get an 18.  I dare say that any pro who’s gotten scolded pretty harshly from Len for use of a prop (Maks, Derek, Dmitry…) was more than a little irate at the end of this night as well.  Remember when Nicole and Derek did a FANTASTIC quickstep that broke a ton of rules? Len gave them a 6. Then Len turns around this season and gives Bristol a 6 after forgetting most of her steps and wearing a Monkey suit. And you still wanna know why Bristol is still around at this point? 🙂 Hint: it ain’t the Tea Party – unless of course Len whipped out his silver tea set on the commercial break. 🙂 Check out this weeks scores:

– Bristol, 18
– Kyle, 20
– Florence, 21
– Audrina, 23

Kyle the Popular is only TWO points ahead of a girl who danced in a monkey suit. TWO.  And Audrina, who dances better on her worst day than Bristol does on her best, is only 5 points ahead of girl in monkey suit.  Florence is only three points ahead of Bristol – and three points ain’t nothing particularly when 8 or 7 people are getting votes. The voting is spread out over more people than it is in later weeks. Florence ultimately goes home, which means that:

Kyle got 5,500 more votes per million votes cast than she did, AND;

Bristol got 16,500 more votes per million votes cast than she did.

That may seem like a lot for Bristol to achieve, but in reality it is only 1.65 percent – a tiny number. Here’s another way to look at it: this was the week where you got 8 votes per phone and 8 votes per email address. So say the average person uses one phone and one email – that means only about 1,000 more people needed to vote for Bristol than they did for Florence. Of course not everyone who watches votes…but everyone who votes doesn’t use ONLY two accounts. We’re dealing in what could be very small numbers, here.

Week 6 – The Real Shocker

Okay, THIS was a shocking elimination – but after you really think about it for a bit, you realize maybe not.   Audrina is in the top two for judge’s scores and goes home. Because of Bristol? Hardly. There was a lot more at play here.  These were the scores for the week:

– Kurt, 22
– Bristol, 28
– Jennifer, 29
– Rick and Kyle, 30
– Audrina, 32
– Brandy, 36

There are FIVE people with lower scores than Audrina going into the audience vote. Five. The spread between the low scorer and Audrina is TEN points. Now that is a nice big number.  But is it shocking that Bristol stayed and Audrina when home? No – there is only 4 points between them, while Kurt is 10 points behind her.  When the second highest scorer goes home when there are 7 dancers?? It means that person wasn’t getting votes, period, not that Kurt and Bristol had huge fanbases. It wasn’t just Bristol that beat her, after all.  Kurt had to get nearly 5% more of the vote than her, or 48,500 more votes per million votes cast. Bristol only needed 1.93% – her highest margin of the season up until the finale. And of course, Jennifer, Rick and Kyle all had to make up a difference as well.

Audrina suffered from the model curse, IMO. Very beautiful but relatively unknown to the DWTS voters. Combine that with being paired with Tony and having a high score that week and you can kiss her goodbye. People continue to assume that if a dancer has a high score they are safe. Several of us on this blog had expressed concern about her longevity for these reasons. Put Audrina up against the movie icon, the fun Disney kid, the daughter of an infamous political figure, and two well liked (and well known) athletes? Then pair her with Tony instead of Derek and her odds get worse. Nothing against Tony, but, like it or not, Derek can make a model stick around longer – Joanna Krupa was far more unpopular than Audrina was popular.  With all these conditions, Audrina was never destined to go higher.

Week 7 – The Athletes Split the Votes

That’s one of my theories anyway. People who are inclined to go the athlete route had two to choose from.  Still think it’s Bristol’s fault? Nah.  This is only the second time that Bristol has been the low scorer and it isn’t by that much:

– Bristol, 57
– Kyle, 59
– Rick/Kurt, 61
– Jennifer/Brandy, 64

There is a significant problem here. First, when you hand out that many points in a week (366) and still keep the margin at 7 points between the top and bottom you actually decrease the percentage the low scorer needs to stick around. If they did the typical 30 point possible and had a spread between the top scorer and the bottom scorer of 7 points, the bottom scorer would need more than 5% to beat the top scorer. In this week, with a total points awarded of 366, there was ONLY a spread of 1.91% between Bristol and Brandy/Jennifer.  When you are talking less than a percent between the bottom FOUR scorers, of course it’s going to be anyone’s game.  Did Rick’s fans assume he was safe because of that four point cushion? Who knows? Were Kyle and Bristol fans really, really worried?? Probably. If those two sets of fans are worried, how hard do they really have to work? Kyle’s fans had to get 0.55% more and Bristol’s fans had to get 1.01% more.  Piece. Of. Cake. Odds are always good that the low scorers fans are going to vote like maniacs and it doesn’t take many maniacs to make up 1.01%.

Week 8 – Well, I think it was Close.

Seriously, Kurt versus Bristol with Bristol being the low scorer – but only by a point. We know what a point really means at this point, don’t we? Nothing. In this case, it was obviously going to be one of the two of them and I wager it was very close. Of course, I base that on what happened in the finale, so of course hind sight is 20-20.  Here were the scores for Week 8:

– Bristol, 47
– Kurt, 48
– Kyle, 57
– Brandy/Jennifer, 58

Much better point spread this week between the top and the bottom – but still that 10 points only means that Bristol is 3.77 percent behind Brandy/Jennifer.  That’s a small number and it’s again the result of a higher number of points awarded.  So, if there is only 3.77 % between the top and bottom, it’s not hard to believe that there is only 0.38% between Bristol and Kurt – that’s no spread at all. I will say it again – Bristol didn’t need a miracle to stay over Kurt. Not at all. She only needed a couple dozen more fans than Kurt who were passionate about her staying. Maybe not even that many if they were power voting.

Week 9 – Tragedy

Well, I think it was a tragedy, anyway. Even though my favorite won, I would have liked to see a real competition. Brandy/Kyle/Jennifer would have been great.  But the question is – did Bristol play spoiler? Hmmm…Maybe for the first time.  But how much of it was Bristol and how much of it was Brandy herself? How much of it was the judges?? Again, the judges had a great deal of influence – look at the scores:

– Bristol, 53
– Brandy, 57
– Kyle, 58
– Jennifer, 60

Bristol only 4 points behind Brandy? Seriously?? People keep saying the judges scores mean nothing, but I think they’ve got it backwards – the judges scores mean everything, just  not in a good way. By scoring Bristol relative only to herself, THEY give her more potential to stick around longer.  Now, I understand doing that early on – but this was the 9th week and it was time to turn into a hard ass and they all FAILED.  Sometimes I think the judges think they are being tough, like above, giving Bristol a 53. Problem is, they don’t really get how the scoring and the audience vote works out either – or it doesn’t appear so, anyway. Because that 4 points equals 1.75%. How many time have I said how little 4 points amounts to? It’s a pittance. When you have Kyle being a likeable teddy bear, Jennifer Grey being JENNIFER GREY and Bristol getting all the buzz (plus the Vote for the Worst crew), Brandy is going to need more than that 4 points – she wasn’t getting any attention that week. No attention = kiss of death.

Week 10 – The Finale Tells the Tale.

And Bristol takes 3rd. And in doing so we learn the limits of her voting fanbase.   The final scores were:

– Bristol, 104
– Kyle, 110
– Jennifer, 118

Again, because so many points were awarded, the spread between them goes down even though the points difference seems greater.  That six points between Kyle and Bristol only equates to 2.75%, which is not that much greater than the spread between her and Brandy. But it is clearly enough to knock Bristol out of the game. I think there were a few things at work here – the judges finally started scoring them relative to each other, or seriously ranking them. When they do that, it makes an impact. But that wasn’t all – people finally figured out that if they didn’t want Bristol to win, they had to vote like hell for someone else. The highest number of votes in the history of the show isn’t going to benefit Bristol, as much as the Tea Party would like to think otherwise – hey, DWTS mirrors real life!! 😉

At the end of the day, Bristol was eliminated because she couldn’t get past the 2.75% between her and Kyle. That was the largest spread she ever had to overcome over the entire 10 weeks of the competition.   Here’s a summation of where Bristol was each week – if she was the low scorer, I put the margin she had to overcome.

–          Week 1 – Not in the bottom 4

–          Week 2 – Not in the bottom 5

–          Week 3 – Margaret was low scorer, Margaret went home

–          Week 4 – Sitch was low scorer, Sitch went home

–          Week 5 – 1.65%

–          Week 6 – Kurt was low score by 6 points, Audrina went home

–          Week 7 – 1.01%

–          Week 8 – 0.38%

–          Week 9 – 1.75%

–          Week 10 – 2.75% – Bristol is eliminated first.

Now, do you still think that it’s surprising that Bristol lasted as long as she did?? I would hope not. I would also hope that people realize they have to vote for their favorite because the judges don’t put in enough of a spread between the dancers to amount to anything.

The moral of the story is – the judges scores mean everything, when they actually rank the contestants. 😉 But if they don’t?? You best vote.

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

DWTS – Media Who Is It, Dance With me Updates

Hi!!! How are all of you Pure Dancettes today?? Just a few media updates. First of all, would you like to guess which pro-dancer this is? Answer will be revealed in the comment section tomorrow sometime. 😉

Next, and special thanks to PureDWTS fan Evaine, here is Maks with a new “Dance with me Soho” update. He tells us what he’s been up to and introduces Tony as his new partner in his dance studio ventures. They both are shooting a really HOT photo shoot that I can’t get enough of. I want too see more. Maks has disabled the embedding, but, you can SEE IT >>>HERE at his You Tube Channel.

Special thanks to PureDWTS fan Figmentation for more news on the “Same Sex Couple” idea. It sounds like ABC is canning the idea for now. Here is a take from Celebuzz.

After toying with the idea of including a same-sex couple on the next season of Dancing With the Stars, ABC has abandoned the notion, PopEater’s Rob Shuter reports.

A source within the network tells Shuter that the plan fell through after Ellen DeGeneres’ wife Portia de Rossi turned down an offer to appear on the show and ABC was unable to come up with a non-controversial replacement:

“If Portia had agreed then this would have been a done deal. She was the only star that could have pulled this off without completely offending the program’s conservative viewers.”

Now, the source adds, producers have decided to hold off on the idea for a few years, hoping that cultural attitudes change, and don’t plan to “rush into creating a same-sex dancing couple just to get attention and publicity.”

In other DWTS ideas and possible contenders, what do you think about the idea of Lindsay Lohan as a contestant next Season? I’m kind of negative on the idea. It depends if she’s kicked her drug habits and done her time. Though that is controversial in and of itself being she’s never had to fully serve it. Why, I don’t know? Don’t the courts realize how much they are hurting her by letting her have her way? But, here is Kyle Massey’s thoughts. He’d also like to see Oprah and Kayne West do the show. Oh boy, not sure on the Kayne West idea either. 😮

Speaking of Kyle, he and Lacey helped with “Skating With The Stars” this past week. Unfortunately, the couple they helped had to back out since one of them was sick. From The Examiner. I love Lacey’s advice on how every “move” should mean something and be performed with intent. So true.

‘Dancing with the Stars’: Kyle, Lacey coach ‘Skating’s’ Brandon, Keauna — One of the most popular pairs from Season 11 of Dancing with the Stars appeared again on television Monday night. Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer were brought in to coach Skating with the Stars’ competitors Brandon Mychal Smith and his professional partner, Keauna McLaughlin.

Mr. Smith and Ms. McLaughlin visited the dancing couple in the dance studio. There, they learned about choreography. Lacey Schwimmer told Brandon Smith that every move had to mean something. Each move must be performed with intent and tell part of the story the routine was trying to convey to the audience.

Although the skating pair seemed to gain ground from the Dancing with the Stars duo, unfortunately illness prevented Brandon Smith from competing live Monday evening. His partner, Keauna McLaughlin was in costume and ready to perform in case he appeared at the last minute, but he did not. Instead, ABC ran a video of the pair’s last rehearsal, shot on Sunday.

If you are in Las Vegas on Dec. 10th, be sure to check out Karina Smirnoff as she is planning to join the Chippendales and host “Ultimate Girl’s Night Out”. Here is take from Vegas News. Check the link for ticket information and more if interested.

On Friday, December 10, the Men of Chippendales – the global icon in women’s entertainment – will be joined by Karina Smirnoff of Dancing with the Stars, as she celebrates her new engagement with girlfriends and also hosts The Ultimate Girls Night Out!.

Karina will join the Chippendales onstage as part of the show’s ongoing celebrity guest host series which has recently featured The Bachelor winner Vienna Girardi and model/actress Estella Warren. In addition, Karina will be escorted on the red carpet by the iconic men who have recently been voted the Best of Las Vegas 2010 – Best Male Revue by both editors and readers of the Las Vegas Review Journal. A fan and media favorite of the hit ABC television show, Karina will be joined by a group of girlfriends, all coming to Las Vegas to celebrate her recent engagement to Major League baseball pitcher, Brad Penny, at Chippendales.

Movieline has rated their Top 10 Reality Shows for 2010. They’ve put “Dancing With The Stas” at #10. Here’s why…

10. Dancing with the StarsTV’s schmaltziest hour of dance and pseudo-fame is usually worth a couple episodes of actual entertainment, but this year, Bristol Palin’s relentless survival turned the show into a musical remake of Network. Fans rioted, ratings boomed, dignity died, and viewer outrage felt as flammable as one of Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s leisure suits. Though Jennifer Grey won the season, it was Bristol Palin’s weak hoofing and dictatorial reign that made for violently good TV.

I promised….I am not going to say a word. 😮 lol

Lastly, here is Chelsey and Kym on Access Hollywood doing a promo for their “Dancing” workout DVDs. Margaret Cho joins them as well.

Ok Kids, that is all for now. Though if you haven’t done so yet, don’t forget to VOTE in our “End of The Season Awards” >>>>>HERE!! Also, a reminder to VOTE in the “People’s Choice Awards” as well if you want to see the show and your favorite dancers win an award(s) this year >>>>HERE!!
