How you might know her: You probably haven’t yet, so read on and learn πŸ˜‰

Pro mentor: Witney Carson
Celeb partner: Akash Vukoti

Kamri doing a solo at the Radix Nationals about a month ago…does she even have bones???

Working that skirt #LikeABoss doing cha-cha at the Paris Worlds last year:

Doing an edgy contemporary trio (she’s the littlest one):

Doing this jazzy little combo:

LOVED taking class from @nikakljun

And finally, crushing some hip-hop:

Court’s thoughts: Kamri is phenomenal – she seems to thrive in any style thrown her way (she’s only been doing ballroom a year and a half, and made it all the way to the world championships in Paris!), and has the energy to tackle every style with enthusiasm.Β  My only concern is the fact that she’s the youngest pro – she JUST turned 10 in May, and while she does strike me as being very mature for her age, I just hope she is able to handle the pressure of being on a show like this.Β  I think back to myself at 10 years old, and I was in tears nearly every day just trying to do well in school – Kamri is dealing with that, plus dance, plus being on a national television show.Β  But on the flipside, she’s also the tiniest pro, and is probably going to be super-easy for a potential partner to do lifts with – that girl seems so limber and fearless.Β  If she is THIS GOOD at ten, think of how phenomenal she’ll be by the time she’s old enough to be a regular pro!

PureDWTS DWTS Junior Pro Profile: Rylee Arnold

Age: 13
Height: 4’11”
Hometown: Provo, Utah
Home studio: VIBE
Dance style: cross-trained in ballroom, hip-hop, jazz, tap, contemporary, and gymnastics
How you might know her: She’s Lindsay’s youngest sister, and tried out for SYTYCD: The Next Generation (but didn’t make it to the live shows).
Other accolades: Placed 3rd in Under-10 Latin at the WDC World Championship in Paris in 2014.Β
Pro mentor: Lindsay Arnold
Celeb partner: Miles Brown

Dancing some cha-cha with her competition partner, Daniel:

Doing hip-hop (with appearances by Brightyn & Hailey):

Doing some contemporary…

And the lovely Arnold ladies πŸ™‚

Court’s thoughts: Rylee on her own is going to be staunch competition – like Lindsay, she’s cross-trained in just about every style, and she seems to excel in ALL of them. God bless VIBE and the cross-training they give their kids – all of their dancers are so well-rounded πŸ™‚ But when you add Lindsay’s guidance and her choreography to the mix? Calling it now – barring any shenanigans (and there had better not be any, with these adorable smol pros that I already feel very protective of), we will see Rylee in the finals of DWTSJ. Like Lindsay, she has IT.

PureDWTS Season 19 Music Wish List

Normally this list would be a lot longer, but John, Heidi, & Lori all had brain farts on music – leaving Vogue & I to pick up the slack πŸ˜‰ Here’s some of the songs we’d love to hear on DWTS this season…and we want to hear yours! Let us know in the comments what songs you’re hoping get used on the show!

Courtney:

“Chandelier” by Sia – This has been on repeat on my iPod all summer.Β  Just a great song for a contemporary routine.

“It’s Not Unusual” by Tom Jones – I’ve wished for it before, and now that we finally got Alfonso on the show, I need to see a quickstep to it…or maybe even a quickstep/samba fusion πŸ˜‰

“Sunglasses at Night” by Corey Hart – My perennial song wish – you guys know this πŸ™‚ Well I wished for Alfonso & got him – maybe Rob Wade will give me my much-anticipated paso doble to this one! 😎

“You & I (Nobody in the World)” by John Legend – While everyone was going crazy over “All of Me” last season, my favorite song off of John’s latest album is this one – it’s kind of the R&B answer to Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight”: a guy telling his lady she’s beautiful no matter what, as he watches her get ready to go out at night.Β  And if you haven’t seen the video yet, go watch it right MEOW – it’s just perfect.Β  If I only see one rumba all season – I want it to be to this song.

“Stay” by Shakespears Sister – Thought about this song last season upon finding out that Candace & Charlie were dancing to Sam Smith’s “Stay with Me”.Β  It’s a pretty old song, but it would make a stellar song for a contemporary routine – hell, I think it would make a fantastic contemporary TRIO song, based on the narrative of the music video.Β  Give it to Derek and watch him work wonders πŸ™‚

“Conjunction Junction” from Schoolhouse RockHad an epiphany the other night while watching a documentary about Schoolhouse Rock – how fun would it be if they did a Schoolhouse Rock theme week? This song would make such a fun foxtrot, and would allow the pros to show off a bit more of a playful side.

“All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor – This song is so ridiculously catchy, and my sister and I have a running inside joke about this song and a gif of a dancing honey badger.Β  Just don’t ask πŸ˜› Would be a fun cha-cha.

“Love Runs Out” by OneRepublic – A currently-popular song that’s actually appropriate for paso doble.Β  So please, producers – no more duds like “Sail”.

Vogue:

“Billy Jean” by Michael Jackson – I’d love to see Alfonso bring this song to life as his older self being this is the song he did with Michael in the Pepsi commercial. That could possibly give us a big “Michael Jackson” moment and I love how this show features something by Michael almost every season.

“A Place With No Name” by Michael Jackson – This is my favorite song currently. I’d freak if the pros performed this in a group number. They could bring on Sharna’s boyfriend Paul Kirkland to dance as well and help with choreography being he performs in the new Michael Jackson Vegas show.

“Come Get It Bae” by Pharrell – This is another one of my current favorite songs. I don’t care who performs it or how….just so they do it. I know Sharna likes this song a lot too.

“Hunter” by Pharrell – Being this song has “Duck Dynasty” mentions, I’d love to see Mark and Sadie dance to this song. Not sure if it’s age or lyric appropriate (maybe the band could fix it somehow?), but, it’s a great dance song.

“Anything Goes” by Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga – What a beautiful song for a Fox Trot or a Waltz.

“Bailando” by Enrique Iglesias – This would be such a great song for a “Latin” group number. The cast could bring the video to life.

“Fairytale” by Alexander Rybak – What a cool and snappy pop Irish/Hungarian “gypsie” jig. A song like this would make a great mix up to the show. I was hooked the first time I heard it.

Queremos Paz” by The Gotan Project – This song would be so cool for a Tango or Argnetine Tango. Actually, I’d take anything by The Gotan Project for a Latin number. Ssssssssssss

Now let’s hear your suggestions! 😎

DWTS Ask Courtney – What’s a “Heel Lead”?

Judging from the comments of my inaugural Ask Courtney post, it looks like many of you are baffled about this one. But fear not, I am about to shed some light on the mysterious “heel lead” Len seems to prattle on about πŸ˜‰

Before I start, though, I want everyone to stand up and take 5 steps in whatever direction you have a clear path. Did you do it? Well congratulations! You just did a heel lead. πŸ™‚ Literally, all a heel lead really entails is taking a step where the first part of your foot that hits the ground is your heel, and then the ball of your foot, and then your toes. Unless you’re injured or just prefer to walk on your tiptoes all the time, this is how people normally walk. It’s a very natural motion.

Where it gets dicey is on the dance floor. In the ballroom dances (waltz, tango, foxtrot, quickstep, and Viennese waltz), you’re (almost) always supposed to step forward on your heel; in the Latin dances, you’re always supposed to step forward on the toe. You step backward on the toe in both dances (it’s nary impossible to step backward with a heel lead…I dare you to try. You will feel silly ;-)). When Len starts bitching about heel leads, it seems like it’s usually a male celeb stepping forward on the toe in one of the ballroom dances – it leads to a very stilted, awkward gait, and seems to throw both the male celeb and the female pro off balance. It also negates the possibility of them getting the proper “rise & fall” characteristic of the ballroom dances (with the exception of tango, which has no rise & fall). This is probably most noticeable in the regular waltz, which has the most exaggerated rise & fall.

As for doing a heel lead when you’re not supposed to – the only thing that springs to mind is Derek’s infamous rant after Shannon’s rumba in season 6, where he accused the judges of overlooking some other couples “doing heel leads out there!”. I haven’t the time or patience at the moment to pore through all of the other rumbas from that particular night and look for heel leads, but I imagine that they probably looked kinda bland. Part of what makes rumba (and all Latin dances, for that matter) look cool is the hip action – hip action that can really only be done well if you’re leading with your toe. So if you’re doing heel leads in Latin dances, it probably looks like you’re just walking like a normal person – hardly the exciting movement we’ve come to expect from dancing on this show. πŸ˜‰

Hope that clears things up a bit πŸ˜‰ Keep the questions coming, guys!
