DWTS Season 10, Week 4 – Media Part III

Sorry to Kate fans, but I’m having a Kate-free media zone. She has completely taken over my television and she’s the worst dancer; I’m not encouraging it, so the only way you’ll see her is if she’s in a video with other people I find interesting. Like…everyone else. 🙂

Maks and Erin on Ellen. Mixed messages, anyone? 🙂

Access Hollywood – Erin responding to the Toronto Star (why? why respond to that crap??). Nicole and Derek on Chad and Cheryl. Jake and Chelsie. Derek gets bad ass -or tries. Difficult when you have a baby face. 🙂

Entertainment Tonight from 4-13; all about the results show. Little bits from Niecy, Erin, Kate and Nicole. Gambling odds – Nicole in first but barely. Evan is almost even with her. However, they got the bottom wrong.

Entertainment Tonight from 4-15; a day in the life of Evan Lysacek. Finally, one of the top dancers gets some press; ya can’t say he’s flying under the radar any longer. Now if only Nicole could get some press on the level of the lesser dancers. Or Pam, for that matter. I’m sick of kate kate kate.

DWTS Season 10 – The Man Behind the Music

The New York Post has an interview with Harold Wheeler which is interesting – certainly interesting to John. 🙂  Excerpts:

One of the biggest thrills of “Dancing With the Stars” is the way unlikely pop hits become quicksteps and rumbas. The man responsible for turning New Order’s “Blue Monday” into a pasodoble is musical director and bandleader Harold Wheeler. The Broadway vet orchestrated the likes of “Dreamgirls” and “Hairspray,” and even produced Gloria Gaynor’s “Never Can Say Goodbye.” We phoned Wheeler in LA to review some of his finest “DWTS” feats.

* “Paparazzi” This pasodoble version of the Lady Gaga hit embodies the Wheeler Touch: horns, and lots of them. “If we did this song true to the nature of the record, it wouldn’t support the dancing,” he explains. “When you put on this big production, you need that brass.”

* “I Want You To Want Me” For a quickstep, Wheeler used the Letters to Cleo cover rather than the Cheap Trick original. “When the producers license the material, they do it according to what’s available at what price. That’s why sometimes we get an odd version: It was probably cheaper [laughs]. But then, I can be more me in the arrangement.”

* “Fever” More was more to make Peggy Lee’s minimal classic a fox trot. “I told the dancers ‘You’re going to hear some new things in the song and I don’t want them to surprise you. They’re really essential to keeping the audience’s attention, so don’t tell me to throw them away.”

* “Secret Agent Man” “Donny Osmond stopped dancing in rehearsal because toward the end I threw in a bit of the 007 theme. But he comes from performing. The pros tend to be more opinionated about the music than the stars.”

* “Star Wars Theme” Joey Fatone and Kym Johnson danced a tango to the disco version, which was close to Wheeler’s heart. “I told the producers to Google the artist, Meco. They called me back and said, ‘You produced that record!’ ”

DWTS Season 10 – Who’s Dancing What…and Other Stuff

This is shaping up to be an interesting week on Dancing with the Stars! First off, we get an all male pro dance during the results show – Derek, Damian, Dmitry and Tony. I feel warm already. 🙂 The guys are dancing to Debi Nova. From a reprinting of the ABC Press Release by J! Ent:

Also this week, Platinum-selling soul star Maxwell will perform his chart-topping single “Fistful of Tears” on Tuesday. The singer/songwriter recently scored a three-peat with “Fistful of Tears,” his third consecutive No. 1 on Billboard’s Urban Adult airplay charts, making him the first male artist to achieve this feat. Grammy Award winner superstars Maxwell and Jill Scott will kick off their U.S. arena tour on May 21 in Cleveland. Maxwell is catapulting off his two recent Grammy Awards and his No. 1, platinum “BLACKsummers’night” (Columbia), which dominated year-end critics lists. Last fall, Maxwell entered the history books at Billboard when “Pretty Wings” and “Bad Habits,” the first two singles from “BLACKsummers’night,” monopolized the top two slots on the Adult R&B radio airplay chart.

Costa Rican singing sensation, Debi Nova, will perform her newest single “Drummer Boy,” while pros Derek Hough, Damian Whitewood, Tony Dovolani and Dmitry Chaplin accompany her on the dance floor. Her first single was co-written by Nova and produced by Marius de Vries and Dreamlab. Nova is set to release her Spanish/English, hybrid debut album, “Luna Nueva,” on Decca/Surco Records this May. Nova has amassed an impressive body of work including six Grammy-nominated projects, a No. 1 single, collaborations with the likes of Black Eyed Peas and Ricky Martin, and touring the world. She has been writing and performing professionally since the age of 14 and signed her first songwriter deal at the age of 17, subsequently penning songs for Latin recording artists Belinda and RBD, Sean Paul, Mark Ronson and her own single, “One Rhythm,” which reached No. 1 in Latin America and on the U.S. dance charts. The forthcoming “Luna Nueva,” co-produced by Surco Records founder Gustavo Santaoalla (two-time Oscar winner, multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy winner, Juanes, CafŽ Tacvba) and Marius de Vries (five-time Grammy Award nominee, two-time BAFTA winner, Madonna, Josh Groban), is an irresistible hybrid of Latin rhythms and straight-ahead pop.

The Macy’s Stars of Dance is featuring an appearance by Debbie Allen, but none of our Pros are listed, so it’s either all or none. 🙂

Now, in terms of the performance show, below is what I have for each couple, including the movie if I know it. I’ve been watching (and participating in) a lot of debate on Twitter – is it any song from a given movie? Is the movie given to them, but not necessarily the title song – if there is a title song?? For example, Derek and Nicole’s movie is Pretty Woman. I made the assumption based on what Tom said that it’s a movie song, not a theme night, so therefore, Derek and Nicole are dancing to “Pretty Woman”, not another song from the movie, such as Wild Women Do (which would, apparently, make a much better tango). So, I will list what I know, below, and you guys tell me if it’s the title song or some other song.

Pam/Damian – Quickstep – This doesn’t bode well for Pam, I don’t think. I will be very happy to be wrong. But a quickstep doesn’t have the passion of a Tango or a Rumba, and doesn’t have the jiggle factor of a Cha Cha. I guess we’ll see. I’ll be happy to be surprised once again.

Kate/Tony – Fox Trot – Again, possible disaster, but it probably won’t matter. Kate says they are dancing to a song from an 80’s movie, a movie she is familiar with. Since the Press Release mentions Breakfast Club, that’s what I’m betting on for Kate. Which song from this movie is the “iconic song”? Don’t You Forget About Me, by Simple Minds? If they are doing a Fox Trot, it’s can’t be We Are Not Alone, can it?

Evan/Anna – Rumba – I think Evan will dance it very well, for sure. But will he have a connection problem with Anna? This dance really requires it, and the best dancer on the show (Nicole) can’t call this her very best dance. Entertainment Tonight (or similar show) said that they are dancing to a romantic song from an action movie. Any ideas out there? 🙂 Something from Independence Day? I have a song right on the tip of my brain but I can’t come up with it. I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing by Aerosmith – from the movie Armageddon??

Jake/Chelsie – Cha Cha – A Cha Cha to Risky Business, no less. At least, that’s what I got from one of the entertainment shows from which I will be posting video later. Please, god, no tighty whities. Please? At this point, I wouldn’t count Jake out, although I think he’s on the bubble. Will he be able to handle the cha cha? No idea. If he does do the Tom Cruise iconic look from this movie, I can guarantee a low score from Len.

Chad/Cheryl – Quickstep – I don’t believe I’ve heard what song they are dancing to, but I smell trouble for Chad. Cheryl tweets that he’s doing well, but really? A quickstep? Again, I would be happy to be wrong.

Niecy/Louis – Jive – Dancing to La Bamba. A Jive to La Bamba? Geez, I dunno. That song doesn’t seem quite right, seems a little slow. So, title song, or another song from the movie. Watching Niecy and Louis on the entertainment shows, I’m saying title song.

Erin/Maks – Jive – to Pulp Fiction?  I’m worried about this one. That scene from Pulp Fiction was “iconic” for sure, but for a Jive? It sounds awkward. I hope I’m wrong.  Okay, after watching the scene from the movie which is, IMO, “iconic” – maybe Maks and Erin don’t have it so bad. I can see a Jive to this song.

Nicole/Derek – Tango – to Pretty Woman. I’m on the title song bandwagon, but hoping like hell I’m wrong. Wild Women Do would be much better, I think. Plus, a little bird tells me that is the song played when Julia is shopping on Rodeo Drive. And where are Derek and Nicole doing an out of studio package bit?? Rodeo Drive. I guess we’ll see.

Of what we know so far, I think Derek and Louis are going to have to work choreographic magic to get appropriate dances from that music. Either that or play with the music, which Maks indicated that he was doing. Anyway, my pre-dance prediction is that Kate is safe yet again and either Niecy or Jake are in deep doo doo. I reserve the right to change my mind once we see the dances.

A note to the Kate Haters: You have to VOTE for another couple (or all the other couples) if you really want Kate to go home. I don’t hate Kate, actually, but what I do hate is better dancers leaving before her. Up to now it hasn’t pissed me off. But if she stays again on Tuesday, it WILL piss me off. Because for her to stay, it means a MUCH better dancer will have to leave, instead of only a slightly better dancer. It means that Jake, or Niecy, or Chad, or Erin, or Nicole, or Pam will go home instead of her. Not Evan, of course, because he’s the ringer to beat. 🙂 But all the rest of them are in danger, some more than others.

DWTS Season 10, Week 4 – Blogging with the Stars

First up, Evan Lysacek blogged earlier this week for People Magazine:

After last week’s performance, my left foot was a little tender. I’m glad to say that the tango is a bit kinder to my broken toes. I’m really enjoying this dance a lot. Our version has more of a fun twist to it than a classic tango. Anna and I get to have a great time with it. We also have some great music to accompany us, which is a little nod to our fellow cast mate Nicole Scherzinger. Yes, we are doing the tango to The Pussycat Dolls’ “Wait A Minute.”

Even though the show doesn’t go live to the East Coast until 8 p.m., the ballroom begins buzzing as early as 8 a.m. The women usually get to the studio on the earlier side to get their hair and makeup done. Because we’re not in L.A. during the week, Anna and I get to the studio around 10 a.m. and go directly to the wardrobe department to try on our costumes. Most couples have their final fittings over the weekend, but ours is done on Monday morning. The show’s amazing costumers, who are used to doing things on the fly, make the necessary adjustments to our outfits while we do a music check. That’s when we perform our routine with the show’s live band. After that, we take a break and have a bit of lunch before hitting the full dress rehearsal with the cast. That’s when we all run through the entire show from top to bottom. We then have about one hour, generally from 3:30 until 4:30 in the afternoon, to relax in our trailers, listen to music, or go over our routines one last time. A lot of times the cast will visit with friends and family, and each other. I know I’ve mentioned before that we’re a pretty tight group, so during the final 30 minutes before we hit the air, we go around and wish each other good luck.

Next up, Maks for TV Guide. We can always count on Maks for his commentary on the judging. 🙂

I thought it [double scoring] was a good idea. In the end, it doesn’t really matter out if your score is out of 30 or 60 — you can think of it like combining two weeks of scores without an elimination. But if they’re going to bring it back, the judges need to be a little bit more constructive in their criticism. They got it wrong in many couples’ cases this week. Backstage, everyone was like, “Why are you marking everybody so low?” Then all of the sudden some couples got higher scores than what we expected. I don’t know how they were judging with the separate scores.

We can only examine ourselves the best, and honestly, I am confused why we got straight 6s on technique. Listen, I can take criticism — just tell me exactly what it is you have an issue with. I had no idea what we were going to get with the two scores. I even told Erin that. I wasn’t upset with the scores, but I was confused. We had a little mishap, but that shouldn’t lead to a nearly 50 percent drop in the scores, especially when they didn’t even comment that much on our technique. Len talked about Erin’s heels a little, but that’s it. Bruno and Carrie Ann kept talking about Erin coming out of character. OK, but that’s performance, so why did we get a higher score for performance? Carrie Ann again commented on the death grip. But enough with the death grip! I don’t think a death grip is worth a four-point deduction. Plus, in dancing, technique is largely about footwork. That’s not to say you can slack off with the upper body, obviously, but technicality with dance starts at the bottom and goes up. You can stand in a pretty frame, but movement starts with the footwork and you’re nothing without the footwork. So that was just confusing. If they want to give us a 6, fine. Just give us a reason too.

Next week, we’re going to do the jive to Pulp Fiction — but we’re not recreating anything from the movie. I have a different idea. The mood is going to be good. I’m doing something different with the way the song is played. We’ve only had one practice so far, but everything is looking good. We’re feeling relaxed. I think it will be fun. It’s refreshing to stop doing the hold a little bit and step away from so many strict rules. I give Erin a little more freedom and a lot of stuff to do on her own. I have a lot more experience in Latin as well, so I see things that don’t work and adapt to certain difficulties that she might have. Her back is fine. She’s a trooper. I felt like it was necessary for her to see the doctor as a preventive measure. It took a lot of convincing! She was like, “Football players just pop their shoulders back in and get on the field.” I was like, “That’s not the same! What we do is about finesse. We don’t tackle anyone. You need your body to be healthy.” So she’s doing well and is treating it. It’s less contused now!

Finally, Derek with Ok! Magazine:

Dancing with Nicole is feeling so fantastic and I’m working so hard with her. We’re in there six or seven hours a day, not just when the cameras are there. It’s not easy. The hours are definitely being put in. She’s open and willing to do anything.

Last night, the judges were right — Nicole WAS quivering and nervous. Rumba is one of the hardest dances on the show. It shows everything. You’re completely exposed and vulnerable and it’s interesting for me to see Nicole, this superhuman singer, a little anxious. You saw in her face during the scores it really got to her — for judge Carrie Ann Inaba to confront her about being nervous—it was like, whoa, somebody just touched on my insecurity in front of millions of people. It was really scary for Nicole.

After the show, we talked about it — she told me, “I was scared,” and I’m like, “It’s okay, this is why you’re here, for people to see you like a human being.” And I reminded her, “By the way, you still gave a phenomenal performance.”

Dancing with the Stars Season 10 – Interview with Tiler Peck

Tiler is the principal dancer with the NYC Ballet that danced in the Macy’s Stars of Dance segment on last tuesday’s show. She gave an interview to the New York Times about her experience on the show. Sounds like it was fun for everyone. Excerpts below – follow the link for the whole interview. See video of the Macy’s Stars of Dance from a previous post on the subject.

Q. What was performing like, were you nervous?

A. I was a little nervous because it was on national TV. It’s a lot different from just regular performance. You can see the audience very close to you and you can feel the energy. It’s not like in a [City Ballet] show, where they don’t start clapping or cheering in the middle of it. It’s different in that sense. Also that the [City Ballet] had never been on a show like that, I thought it was cool and the crowd loved it. They had never experienced anything like it and it’s great for them to see our side too. To get a little glimpse of the ballet world that they might not be exposed to.

Is she correct about this? I would swear that DWTS had ballerina’s on before. Am I mis-remembering?

Q. How long were you in rehearsal?

A. I flew out [to the Los Angeles studio] on Saturday. We had two hours and then blocking with the camera and that’s it. We’re all young, the people who were in it, so we were just excited to be doing it. And the show loved it and respected it. They never had a ballerina, so I was treated like royalty.

Q. What was it like being backstage?

A. I got my makeup done in between Nicole and Pamela Anderson and they were just talking and that was cool, and to meet the ballroom dancers. Other people were like wow, we’ve never seen anything like that, when can we come see you? And that’s exactly what I thought would be great for the company.

DWTS Season 10, Week 4 – The Ratings?

It appears to be a tie, folks. 🙂 But this article/blog in the Washington Post is just hilarious – I recommend reading the whole thing for the way she calls the ratings race like a horse race, but I’ve put a few excerpts below:

Even so, the air was electric with excitement, in our own head anyway, to see which show would come out on top this week: Monday’s “Dancing” performance show or Tuesday’s “Idol” competition night. The expectation was that “Idol” would return to the top spot now that the first blush of excitement is over on the new season of “Dancing,” which debuted in March — about two months into the “Idol” season.

And, of course, this week was Elvis week on “Idol” — always a crowd-pleaser — and last season’s Really Big Deal (though not winner) Adam Lambert had been booked to mentor the Idolettes. And all that mind-numbing padding would be taken out of this week’s performance show — always a plus for viewers — in order to get it down to one hour and 28 minutes in length, making way for the highly hyped return of Fox’s musical dramedy “Glee.”

But, over at ABC, they brought out the heavy artillery on “Dancing.” Which is to say: rumba, tango and Pamela Anderson. Some deep-thought thinker also put a cap on the women’s clothing at 10 percent body coverage.

Monday’s potent rumba/tango and barely covered Pamela would be tough to beat.

“Dancing With the Stars” and “American Idol” had tied, with 20.6 million viewers each.

Actually, if you take it out to enough decimal points, “Idol” (20.639 million) barely edged out “Dancing” (20.562 million) by the population of Sandusky, Ohio (pop. 77,000) — the Roller Coaster Capital of the World.

DWTS Season 10, Week 4 – The Macy’s Stars of Dance

John had spoken about his excitement about this particular Macy’s Stars of Dance, as had Courtney, so I finally got around to the video. Starring the principal ballerina from the NYC Ballet, performing in a routine choreographed by Travis Wall (lately of SYTYCD), and also starring Nuttin’ But Stringz providing the awesome music.

DWTS 10: Aiden Turner Sent Home

I hate that Aiden was sent home…he was just starting to come out of his shell!  He and Edyta were fabulous together and had such a great relationship.  And I think Edyta needs to win one of these seasons…she’s the only pro that’s been on DWTS since season 1 and hasn’t won!

Relive Aiden’s Dances
1. Week 1, Cha-Cha-Cha

2. Week 2: Foxtrot

Week 3: Quickstep

Week 4: Rumba
