DWTS Season 17, Week 1 – Let’s Recap Tonight’s Show!!

Hey all!! With all the changes to DWTS this season, of course you’re going to see a few changes here at PureDWTS as well. Don’t panic! Courtney is still doing her Power Rankings – but they’ll go up on Tuesday, probably in the morning. I’m still doing “Dancing by the Numbers” (although adjusted to fit the new voting/elimination deal) and it will go up on Wednesday morning. You will likely see Cheesecake in some form, possibly smaller bites scattered through the week. And, of course, Vogue will reign supreme as the Queen of all Media. 🙂

Because of that new format, and our newer schedule, we thought it would be a good idea to put up a post every Monday evening where we can all rehash the show, tell us your favorite dance or dancer, pick on Carrie Ann, Brooke, Bruno…whoever (except Tom – Tom is god). Discuss at length hot dancer bodies. Whatever. 🙂 And, of course, this will be the place where you find out who got eliminated if you happened to miss the show – not till next week, though. I will change the title to include “Spoiler” when that happens.

The only thing I haven’t decided yet is whether to post this when the show starts or immediately following. I have noticed that this place gets pretty quiet while the show is actually airing in the East. I’m posting this one right NOW – let me know your preferences. I can post it when the show start for those who like to watch and discuss at the same time.

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Bill Engvall Calls His Radio Show From The Set Of Dancing With The Stars (Audio)

Bill Engvall called into his Sirius XM show on Blue Collar Radio from the set of Dancing With The Stars today. He’s nervous about tonight…uhhh… to say the least, but, it’s wild and fun. It’s a bigger deal than he thought. He’s never ‘fox hunted’ so how can he ‘fox trot’? lol More below. Note too how Bill mentions he has a Jive next week and a Paso Doble the next if he makes it to the third week.

All Eyes On Karina Smirnoff’s And Corbin Bleu’s Lift Tonight On Dancing With The Stars

Karina Smirnoff and Corbin Bleu have written a new blog together for People! They write all about how theor partnership is going, rehearsals for the premiere of Dancing With The Stars and more. Below is a take from Corbin about the lift he’s doing tonight….

I’m nervous about our lift during Monday’s dance. It’s a very tough lift, especially for week one. Our first dance is contemporary, which allows lifts. We’re attempting a pretty big one. We’re doing really well, but we did have that one fall. We’re working hard at it and getting so much more comfortable with each other’s bodies, so I think we’re going to be okay.

Also, here is a teaser from Karina on the lift as well….

Neither of us has ever done a contemporary dance before. I’m nervous for Monday. Our dance has a crazy lift in it. It’s nerve-racking. You only get to do it once. You work so hard and then you get this one chance to make a first impression.

Too fun. I can’t wait. Lots more from the both of them at People.

PureDWTS Snooki Blogs About Partner Sasha Farber And Her First Dance

The headline says it all. Below is more from Snooki thanks to People.com. I’ve never been a fan to Snooki in the past, but, I must say… I’m loving her attitude.

I just went through the first whole week of rehearsals with my amazing partner, Sasha Farber. When I first met Sasha, I was so happy because he wasn’t that tall! I was praying I would get a small dancer since I am only 4-ft., 8-in. tall. Even though it’s Sasha’s first season as a DWTS pro, he has been an amazing teacher and I feel like we’ve been besties forever. I couldn’t be happier to be paired up with him.

The dance that we are performing for the first week is the cha cha. It’s a lot of booty shaking and hip thrusting. I have to be honest, practicing the cha cha for four hours a day, seven days a week is EXHAUSTING! My body aches, my legs are sore, my feet are blistered – ballroom dancing is no joke!

I now look at professional dancers in a whole new light. I came into this whole experience expecting it to be a fun walk in the park, but this experience is a true test of your character, stamina and how far you can push yourself.

I love that I am testing myself everyday on this journey, and learning more about my body and about myself. It’s only been the first week and I’m absolutely in love with everything.

Judges Bruno Tonioli And Carrie Ann Inaba Weigh In On The New Cast Of Dancing With The Stars 17

Judge Bruno Tonioli and Extra’s Mario Lopez dance a little and then they go over the new season of Dancing With The Stars. Bruno is loving the variety of the cast, but, he has some special thoughts to share on “Showgirls” too (are we now surprised? lol).

Also, ABC News interviewed Carrie Ann Inaba about the new season of Dancing With The Stars. Below is a take for how Jack Osbourne and Valerie Harper are personally touching her. You can read more at the link on what she thinks of a few of the other contestants.

Inaba said Osbourne could possibly follow in his sister’s footsteps as someone who could make it far into the competition.

“If we look back at Jack’s sister, Kelly, she didn’t even have a disability except the fact she was truly a dark horse,” she said. ”Her determination took her to the end, she was in the final three. She captured the hearts of people and I think it really changed her life.”

Another contestant who is easy to root for is Valerie Harper, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer earlier in the year and has since come close to remission.

Inaba can relate because her mother, Patricia, was diagnosed with stage-3 breast cancer in 2008 and is now a survivor.

“It’s going to be interesting to watch Valerie for sure,” she said. ”She’s captured the hearts of all of us. I want to see this courageous woman do her thing. I’m so impressed with her, the message she’s sending out to people that are suffering with cancer or in remission.”

A message of “Don’t die until you’re dead!” Harper, 74, told ABC at the cast reveal two weeks ago. “Don’t give up on your life, don’t just lay there.”

DWTS Brant Daugherty Says A Lot Of His Dances With Peta Murgatroyd Will Be “Very Very Sexy” (Audio)

Finally, a new interview with Brant Daugherty! Ryan Seacrest asked Brant if there is something going on between he and Dancing With The Stars partner, Peta Murgatroyd. Brant says, “Peta and I definitely have no lack of chemistry. We have a lot of fun around each other and a lot of our dances we are going to be doing are very, very sexy.” Hmmm….not sure what to think of this right now? I just want some really good dancing and genuineness. What do you think? More below and thanks to Lori for sending!

ADDING: The Backlot has posted a new interview with Brant as well. Below he talks of the competition, handling the judges, and more.

TBL: It’s early but who of your fellow contestants are you eyeballing as a threat?

BD: I’ve been thinking that for a couple of weeks now and I’m not completely sure. I don’t really know what a lot of them are capable of yet. I will say that I’m keeping my eyes on Corbin Bleu, I’m keeping my eyes on Christina Milian, I’m keeping my eyes on Elizabeth Berkeley [and] definitely Keyshawn Johnson.

TBL: You’ve been working on the Cha-Cha but what dance style scares the hell out of you?

BD: [laughs] You know, honestly, all of the Latin dances in general. I grew up in a little farm town in Ohio and there wasn’t very much Latin influence there so the whole concept of moving your hips…it’s a very foreign concept to me. We never Cha-Cha’d growing up, that’s for sure!

TBL: And sometimes on Dancing With The Stars, the guys have to rip their shirts off to get some votes. Are you ready to just rip it off?

BD: We’re not going to get into that too early. I don’t want to be the first one to start taking my shirt off every week. I think we’ll definitely get there but we’ll get there when the audience really wants to see it.

TBL: As far as you know, will you be good at taking criticism from the judges? They can be helpful but they can also be harsh. Are you ready for that?

BD: I think one of the advantages that actors have on the show is they get judged to their faces every single day. Nobody is ever shy in telling me how they feel whether it’s a casting director or somebody on Twitter, my manager or someone who has watched the show. They are always brutally honest with you so I like to think I have thick skin. I know that all the criticism is only there to make me better.

Good Morning America Interviews DWTS Season 17 Cast Before The Premiere

Good Morning America aired a new segment on the premiere of Dancing With The Stars Season 17 this morning. The cast talked with Melissa Rycroft. We don’t have the video coverage yet, but, you can read an article about it at this link. Below is a take with comments from Valerie Harper, Jack Osbourne, Amber Riley, Leah Remini, and Bill Engvall talking of their jitters and goals. We’ll be sure to post the video as soon as it’s available. ETA: Ok, you can now watch the video coverage at this link. You can also see some of the cast dancing in stage rehearsals. Too fun!

Actress Valerie Harper, who has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer that appears to have retreated for now, told “Good Morning America” correspondent Melissa Rycroft that, physically, she’s feeling very well.

At 74, Harper is the oldest celebrity competitor in the cast. She says she has a strained knee for which she’s receiving therapy, but added that she “wouldn’t be doing this if it was endangering me in any way.”

“And I think it was a great opportunity to get out there and say, you know, ‘I have cancer … Keep living your life. Keep moving and you can win. You can extend the time, at least,'” she said.

For TV personality Jack Osbourne, who has multiple sclerosis, participation on the program will be significant in several ways.

“One thing I hope to accomplish is, I guess, mainly, just to kind of put it out there, in all seriousness, that when you get diagnosed with MS that your life doesn’t stop and that you are still, for the most part, able to do (what) everyone else can,” he said.

“Glee” star Amber Riley also hopes to send a message through her participation.

“You know, I really want young girls that look just like me to feel – just get out there and move and dance,” she said.

As for the other celebrity dancers this season, many of them have admitted to feeling first-night jitters.

“Yes, definitely nervous. Very anxious,” Riley told Rycroft, who was “Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars” champion in 2012.

Comedian Bill Engvall said he was more nervous than he thought he would be, while actress Leah Remini admitted feeling “terrified” about her looming dance debut.
