DWTS Season 19 – GMA Pro Watch!! (Live Blog)

Hi all!! Decided to start a new post because the other one was getting cluttered and would be hard to read for anyone coming back for the first time in a while. Click to read the old post.

I was watching GMA at the beginning and they teased nothing – which means I have to wait until they go to the first commercial. Boo.

ETA: Vogue here! GMA just said the announcement was soon coming. Will Derek Hough be back, they ask? We will soon find out!!

ETA: I’m back! They just teased it again, not mentioning any single pro, but showing Cheryl and Drew.

ETA: They just showed their play room with all the screens with big question marks and asked “Maks? Derek? Who will be back and what will their role be??”

ETA4: Okay, there are four pros in studio. I’m guessing Cheryl and Mark. Not sure of the other two. And then they show a child photo of Karina – I take it as she’s IN. They showed Maks/Meryl, Derek’s Ameska Macy’s and Cheryl/Drew – clues.

ETA5: Latest tease shows Derek and Jennie Garth and says 8:22 is the time for the reveal. Ask again about Derek and Maks’ role. Asked if they would be going “head to head”. Um, yeah, Derek is super competitive. :::rolls eyes:::

ETA6: Cheryl is in Studio and competing. Tony is in studio. Karina also in studio, along with Val. Switch up is back. Results show the first two weeks. Len gone for part of season. There will be some “guest judges”. COMMERCIAL/Local News Break.

ETA7: Next…Mark Ballas. See below for the rest. Can’t say I’m happy Derek is back. No vacay for Heidi. 🙂  I was typing as I went and just realized no Sharna. Kinda devastated about that.  Also, no Gleb in the pro lineup despite his wife’s tweet. He must be back in the troupe.

The starting positions below are based on the individual pro’s status last season. Troupe is still unknown. Read more..

Dancing with the Stars: The Jeopardy Theory

Every season, readers get very confused by the concepts of “bottom two” versus “jeopardy”. If you don’t listen carefully to what Tom and Brooke (now Erin) say, it’s easy to get confused. If a couple is in the bottom two, it means that they, along with the eliminated couple, had the lowest combined score. The combined score is determined by viewer votes and judges scores. The formula is relatively simple: they take a couple’s score and divide it by the total points handed out on a given night to get their share of the judges scores. They do the same with the viewer votes; they divide a couple’s number of votes by the total number of votes cast and come up with their share of the votes. They then add the two numbers together; the couple with the lowest combined total is then sent home.  You can see many examples of this in my series of posts called “Dancing by the Numbers”.

When the show is airing, there are two ways of getting to an elimination, by putting three couples in jeopardy (oh, the drama) and then saving one, and then one of the remaining two goes home. And then there is the straight up identification of the “bottom two” couples. Tom will say “the bottom two” if this is the case. If neither Tom nor Brooke (now Erin) says “these are the bottom two” then we don’t actually know if the two people standing at the end are really the low combined score getters. There are multiple reasons why they like do this. The main reason, of course, is DRAMA. How they love their drama. They like to make the show exciting and if the low scorer was immediately sent home every week, what fun would that be? This past week, you’ll note that Tom and Erin made it clear that Cody and Witney were “not necessarily” the bottom two.

The question that is asked every season is: does “jeopardy” (aka, being the last couple called safe) have any real meaning for the couples put there??  The answer is yes, of course. The problem is determining what that meaning is at the time. That is very difficult to do, although we’ve gotten pretty good at figuring it out every season.  You always have to remember a few key things:

  • The producers want to keep the show exciting, and jeopardy is a part of that;
  • The producers often have a reason why they want to keep a particular couple around longer and motivating fan bases to vote harder can be accomplished by “jeopardy” if they think the votes are too low;
  • Drama, drama, drama!! How exciting is it when the high scorer of the night is standing next to the low scorer of the night and you don’t know who’s going to survive – and the producers fool you into thinking that the low person is for sure going home…and then they don’t?

Yeah, I don’t think it’s really that exciting at this point in the show’s history, but I’ve long said that the producers have lost touch with their audience. 🙂

Now, since I’m the biggest nerd of a blogger on this site, I wondered if there was any kind of pattern to the “jeopardy” and the subsequent eliminations. So I made tables of seasons 11 through 17 to try and figure it out. Hindsight is 20/20 – but it can inform how you watch the show going forward.  The answer, as you may have guessed, is that yes there is something of a pattern. Sometimes. And it’s an easy one to see when you’re looking back – but still impossible to be sure of when you’re watching the show in real time. 🙂 That is unlikely to change. Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Season 18 – PRO WATCH!!

It’s that time of year once again, boys and girls – time for Pro Watch. 🙂  It will be very interesting to see what happens this year, after they let go of the band. That was a huge cost savings to them. The question is: are they looking to save even more money (say goodbye to Derek and possibly Cheryl) or have they saved so much that they can afford the popular, long term pros that have kept people coming back to this show season after season? I personally think that they will do what they can to hold on to Derek – he’s an Emmy winner and that’s very helpful to the show’s cache. I think they will also do their best to hold on to Cheryl, Karina and Mark. I’m GUESSING that Val and Tristan are still locked into contracts that are beneficial to ABC so they aren’t in question as long as they find a partner for them.  As always, I could be wrong. 🙂 Read more..

Producer Scott Stander And DWTS Cheryl Burke Talk About Ballroom With A Twist

Who is planning to see “Ballroom With A Twist”? Producer Scott Stander told PureDWTS that we will see “a very special show as we have a few people in covering for some cast members. We are doing a performance in San Francisco with Val Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd. So a lot of surprises.” Surprises indeed. I can’t. I plan to see the Wyoming show. If you haven’t got tickets to a show in your area, see this link as they are travelling all over the country. Scott along with Cheryl Burke also talked with Delaware Online. Below is a take from the article on the show….

“Ballroom” has “kind of evolved,” says producer Scott Stander from a concept that began with: What do you get when you combine three television reality shows? “You get ‘Ballroom With a Twist,’ ” he says.

This is the first time that Burke, a California native from the San Francisco area, will be on the “Ballroom” tour, although she remembers visiting Wilmington with the “Dancing With The Stars” tour a few years ago, but the show left after a night, she says. This time around, she’s looking forward to being in Delaware for a week.

“I have no idea what to expect on the show,” Burke says, “But I know I’ll be dancing with Tony Dovolani, Derek Hough and Peta Murgatroyd. A lot of my friends are part of ‘Ballroom with a Twist,’ and have been for the last few years. I’m excited to be able to dance in front of live people and just have a good time. For me, when it comes to dancing, it’s always better to perform in a more intimate setting like a theater.”

Dancing in a big arena requires big performances, she says. But dancing in a theater allows the audience to see the interplay between the dancers and appreciate the emotion and subtle moves.

This show will start with a Broadway-style number. During the night, fans will see dances that include samba, waltzes, foxtrots, quickstep and jive.

“If you’re a fan of these shows, you’ll be tickled pink,” Stander says. “If you’ve never watched the shows, you will end up a fan of those shows because of the amazing talent on the stage. What they do with their bodies is amazing. Dancing is all different these days, very athletic.”

The show will a question-and-answer session with the stars.

“I do expect to be getting a lot of questions,” says Burke, who has been on “Dancing With The Stars” for 15 seasons. The questions always include things like whether they pick their own partners, how much work they do and who their favorite partners were. (Jack Osbourne and Emmett Smith were two of them).

“Ballroom With a Twist” is designed to be the kind of show you can bring kids to, or you can bring grandma, and they’ll all have a good time, Stander says.

“You’ll see flashy costumes, you’ll see some great production numbers and some great singing,” he says. “The audience will get up and have a good time and dance.” One of the numbers is a Cirque du Soleil-style number featuring Cirque performer Eric Newton to soaring vocals.

Peta Murgatroyd Talks About “Ballroom With A Twist” And Dancing With The Stars

Let the “Ballroom With A Twist” news begin! If you visit the Delco Times, you can read a nice little lead up to the show from Peta Murgatroyd. She also discusses how her dancing dreams came true and what it’s like working on Dancing With The Stars. The pic above below is of she and Mark Ballas at rehearsals for Ballroom With A Twist this past weekend in San Diego courtesy of Mark. Note: If you go to any of the “Ballroom With A Twist” shows coming up and would like to write a guest blog, send pics, or videos, write to us here or at Pere Derek Hough by using our Contact forms or dm us at twitter. We appreciate anything you’d like to send us and would love to feature it.

Murgatroyd, speaking by telephone from San Diego, said she usually takes a break after a “Dancing with the Stars” season, but that “Ballroom with a Twist” provided a chance for fun she could not resist.

“I love to work, and I love travel. This show allows me to do both.

Murgatroyd also said she loves working in live theater. She earned her job as one of the professional dancers on “Dancing with the Stars” after a producer saw her in the ballroom dance show, “Burn the Floor,” on Broadway.

“Broadway had always been my dream,” Murgatroyd said. “From the time I started dancing, and that was at the age of 4, I wanted to be in a Broadway show. Coming to New York in ‘Burn the Floor’ was particularly amazing because the show was so well-received, and I had the sequence where I danced blindfolded in ‘Weatherstorm.’

“My dream came true when I was in my early 20s,” Murgatroyd continued. “I wondered what could top the experience of being on Broadway and being praised for my work in New York. Then, ‘Dancing with the Stars’ came along. I was offered a contract and did not have to audition. The work would be a challenge. I’m not sure that the general public knows it, but the professional dancers are responsible for every aspect of the performances they do with their partners.

“We not only choreograph each dance, but we select the music and design the set and costumes. We can talk to the wardrobe department to get help with our ideas, but when it comes to the music and the dance, outside help is against the rules. Every Tuesday, you wake up with that wonderful but daunting feeling that you have to start all over again thinking of your partner, conceiving a dance, and working out the sound and look you want.

Update On Holland America’s Dancing With The Stars At Sea Cruise

DWTSatSeaCruise2014

Hey All! Pictured above is Emma Slater, Derek Hough, and Sharna Burgess on the judging panel for Holland America’s Dancing With The Stars cruise now taking place in the Caribbean. If you’d like to see more pictures visit and be watching Chris Owen’s Pinterest page. Also, Chris has given an update in a blog. Below is a take for what he wrote about the Dancing With The Stars pros on board. Be sure to read the link for more.

The ship’s entertainers were on hand, showcasing various venues around the ship to give guests an idea of what to expect, and were well received. Based on the night’s preview performances, there is much to look forward to as the ship makes its way through the Caribbean itinerary. Still, headlining tonight’s show were the 15 finalists competing for the coveted mirror ball trophy, one from each ship in the Holland America line.

They came from Florida to California to compete and one by one, television personality Carson Kressley introduced each of them as passengers began choosing favorites in what would be an integral part of the experience. It was just a preview of what was yet to come.

On the ship but absent from the night’s performance were singer Joey Fatone from Orlando (who I met at Port Everglades, during curbside luggage check-in), dancers Tristan MacManus, Kym Johnson, Sharna Burgess and Emma Slater along and actress Sabrina Bryan. But it was Derek Hough, the Emmy® Award-winning dancing professional best known for his role on the hit ABC television show “Dancing with the Stars, that drew the biggest round of applause from the crowd as Kressley announced each star on board.

Too fun! Be watching this link as he may update us with more soon!! If you’d like to see more of Derek, visit Pure Derek Hough as we are featuring some new video of him dancing on the cruise.
