PureDWTS Season 23 Cast Rumors & Watchout: Aly Raisman is Trying to Get Simone Biles to Do the Show

With the Olympics currently underway, I’ve been seeing a lot of speculation about which athletes we might see on season 23 – with particular attention paid to the US women’s gymnastics team, since we’ve had 3 former Olympic gymnasts on DWTS (Shawn Johnson, Aly Raisman, & Nastia Liukin).  Well it looks like we may have gotten our first semi-solid piece of intel that the show is sniffing around for another gymnast – check out this feature that US Weekly did on Simone Biles:

simonealy

Teammate Aly Raisman was on 2013’s Dancing with the Stars and is urging Biles to follow suit: “I can’t dance, but that’s the whole point.”

I’ve always had a hard time getting a read on Aly (some of you might have seen me tweeting about it the other night), but I doubt she’d be encouraging Simone to do DWTS if the show hadn’t at least reached out to Simone already. And the fact that Simone thought to bring it up in an interview, no less, probably means that there is already a legit offer on the table.

I’m crossing my fingers AND toes that this one comes to fruition, because MY GOD, this girl is PHENOMENAL at what she does.  It’s hard to really leave me speechless these days – but watching her do her floor routine the other night was a revelation.  I think she could really wow us, even if she claims she can’t dance, because her work ethic just seems tireless. Also worth mentioning? Simone stands an itty-bitty 4’9″ – even tinier than Shawn Johnson and only a mere inch taller than Snooki…who was partnered by the diminutive Sasha, who also happens to boast the strongest gymnastic skills of any pro on the show.  If Simone gets cast, I can’t see any way that they couldn’t bring Sasha back – unless they run into another mismatch situation to ensure Val gets a spot, in which case I may roll my eyes so hard they get stuck and I’m unable to watch the rest of the season 😛 I think Sasha would be PERFECT for Simone.

So what do you guys think? Could Simone be contemplating a run for the mirrorball after the Olympics wrap up? Could she be Sasha’s best shot at an MBT? Or would you rather see another member of the US women’s gymnastics team on the dancefloor?

Special thanks to the @thetv_addicted for tweeting me this little nugget.

Pure DWTS Questionnaire Looking Back On 2013: What are your “favorite” and ‘best of” thoughts?

Hi Everyone!! We thought it might be fun to look back on the last two seasons of Dancing With The Stars (Season 16 and Season 17) to get your “favorite” and ‘best of” thoughts. PureDWTS Season 17 Rant: Really, Really Dumb Ideas About the Show (Courtesy of Facebook & Instagram)

After Elizabeth & Val’s elimination last Monday night, against my better judgement, I decided to see what fans on the DWTS Instagram page were saying about the results.  Of course I instantly regretted this decision, because I saw more than a few hystrionic, irrational, and downright idiotic complaints about everything from the scoring to the voting to the overall format of the show.  I also witnessed a horrifying lack of command of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and overall coherence when conversing in the English language 😯 And here’s what really grinds my gears: nothing has changed, guys.  The show’s scoring has been calculated the same way for 17 seasons now (50% judges’ scores, 50% viewer votes), we’ve had the same 3 judges for every season, and this is FAR from being the only voting shakeup we’ve seen in 17 seasons.  So why is everyone suddenly up in arms about it now?

We may never know for sure, but I can say this: some of the Instagram & Facebook DWTS fans have got some really, REALLY dumb ideas about the show – ideas that I’m proud to say that our Pure readers would recognize as pure poppycock in a heartbeat 😉 So of course, I just had to find a way to show you guys some of these gems – both for humor purposes and educational purposes.  All of these are actual comments, either on the DWTS Facebook page or the Instagram page, and all were posted publicly – so I’m within my rights to republish them here; but because some of these ideas are some real turds, I’ve taken pity on the commentor & blurred out any identifying details, except for the first name – cause it’s a helluva lot easier to refer to them by some name than by “idiot #1, idiot #2, idiot #3, etc”.  😉

Really Stupid Idea #1: The judges’ scores should have more weight.

dwtsdumbidea1

No offense, mimi, but where have you been the past 16 seasons???

I shouldn’t even have to elaborate on why this is a downright TERRIBLE idea, but I’m going to anyway because clearly some of the simple-minded folk that are backing this turd of notion don’t seem to understand that this is likely not going to have the effect they think it will. I’m guessing they assume that judges’ scores being weighted more heavily = good dancers stay, bad dancers go.  But apparently they don’t realize that the judges aren’t exactly infallible & objective – far from it, as we’ve witnessed over 17 seasons. The judges are capable of some pretty blatant favoritism towards some contestants (William Levy, anyone?) and have undeservingly HOSED other contestants (Ralph Macchio fans, this is where you nod in agreement).  They also have a tendency to “pity score” some contestants to soften the blow (*cough*BRISTOLPALIN*cough*), with the unexpected effect of said contestants outstaying their welcome.  And then there’s their personal biases: Carrie Ann & Bruno are both easily swayed by attractive young men (regardless of how well they can actually dance), while Carrie Ann seems to turn into a green-eyed monster when it comes to scoring attractive young women, and tends to take some cheap shots when critiquing them. Len has a tendency to scold Derek at least once a season, and hand out an absurdly low score as a result.  And of course, Carrie Ann’s dubious lift-policing seems to have an effect as well…just ask Corbin & Karina, who earlier this season were penalized for a lift that didn’t even exist. We’ve also talked about the “man behind the curtain” possibly exerting some influence over the judging as well – seemed awfully convenient that William Levy was getting worshipped by the judges week after week (whether or not he was actually worthy of the worship), when he was set to launch a huge deal for Univision (which is part of the ABC family…hmmmm). People REALLY want to give these clowns even MORE power? I feel like just last year, people were complaining about how the judges were terrible and needed to be replaced!!! Another point to consider: the viewers need to feel invested in this show – they need to feel like they have a say in who stays and who goes.  And the minute you start making them feel like their vote doesn’t count or counts less is the minute you start losing viewers.  Even those that don’t always vote seem to take comfort in the fact that the viewers do have the power to overturn a bad score from the judges. PureDWTS Guest Poem For DWTS Season 17 Week 8 “A Superstar Cher-abration”

PureDWTS reader Lois writes another fantastic poem. This time it’s a salute to Cher and Dancing With The Stars. Thanks Lois!!! Perfect!

MY POEM FOR WEEK EIGHT

A SUPERSTAR CHER-ABRATION!

DANCING WITH THE STARS was A SUPERSTAR CHER-ABRATON
CHER was superlative in opening, the entire cast a bright sensation

CHER took the seat of royalty, the judges welcomed her in the fold
Cheers rang out in the ballroom, sounds of a SUPERSTAR to behold

The couples were as ready as they could be for SUPERSTAR CHER
A heightened sense of excitement permeated through the ballroom air

IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME showing Derek, Amber’s Rumba beat
Bill and Emma were STRONG ENOUGH, their Disco a rocking treat

I GOT YOU BABE, Tony, Leah told CHER’s story in Viennese Waltz
Jack and Cheryl Tangoed gloriously to THE BEAT GOES ON’s pulse

Elizabeth, Val were Jazzed by CHER’s SUPERSTAR hit BANG BANG
Corbin and Karina’s Argentine Tango had a juicy BURLESQUE tang

Brant, Peta Foxtrotted to CHER’s SHOOP SHOOP with tender care
There were duo challenges still to come filling up the ballroom air

Cha-Cha-Chas were mirrored by Corbin, Karina, Elizabeth and Val
Corbin and Karina were chosen by the judges to have better style

The duos chosen for the Rumbas were Brant, Peta, Leah and Tony
The judges raised their paddles declaring Leah, Tony one and only

The Disco beat went on with Bill and Emma, and Jack and Cheryl
The winners of the challenge Jack and Cheryl gave it the best whirl

SUPERSTAR CHER serenaded the ballroom again, her voice strong
The CHER-ABRATION continued, everyone kept the beat, sang along

The time came, the elimination announcement ready to be shared
Brant, Peta had to go home, the cast gathered, showed they cared

CHER took her bows at the end of a special mystical, magical night
A SUPERSTAR CHER-ABRATION was a CHER-ABRATION delight

What will we be treated with as Week 9 is coming, within our sight
We will welcome back another rousing show next Monday night!

Afterbuzz TV Breaks Down Dancing With The Stars Season 17 Week 8

AfterBuzz TV has released their post game wrap up for Dancing With The Stars Season 17 Week 8. Tyne Stecklein joins them this time. It’s interesting getting Tyne’s inside perspective about Cher since she’s worked for her in Las Vegas. Anna Trebunskaya also joins them again (who I’m seeing in a different light this season and it’s not a favorable one sad to say. I didn’t realize until this season that she had so many issues with Derek.) With that said, here ya go. Let us know what you think.

PureDWTS Season 17 Week 8 Post Media After The Dances Including Interviews With Cher And Chaz Bono

Hi Dancettes! So, far there isn’t much to share for new interviews with the cast of Dancing With The Stars after the show last night. Hopefully, as the day progresses more will come out. For now, head to Entertainment Weekly. They interviewed Corbin Bleu, Elizabeth Berkley & Val Chmerkovskiy, Derek Hough & Amber Riley, and Jack Osbourne & Cheryl Burke. They talked of the elimination and how “intense” and “dramatic” it was. Val thought he and Elizabeth were going home. Derek said it’s going to be sad to see anyone go home from this week on and he is right.

Below is Corbin and Karina chatting with Access Hollywood. They talk of the crazy night and the elimination….

Also, Chaz Bono and Cher talked with Access Hollywood. Chaz talks on losing 85 pounds. He feels like a completely new man. Cher talks of how she cried before the show for how nervous she was, but, she had so much judging. She also discusses when she first met Sonny at the coffee house. Awww moment.

Henry of PopTVDotCom also interviewed some of the cast after the show heading to Mixology. Note how Tom wants more guest judges such as his friend William Shatner. I hope they have more guest judges in the future too. It helps mix things up. What do you think?

ETA: On The Red Carpet have released their new interviews. You can watch them all at this link. Afterbuzz TV is also starting to release their new interviews here.

ETA2: Carrie Ann Inaba has written a new blog at Parade.com. I thought this bit was interesting about hot “the right couple always goes home”.

Let’s get back to the question at hand: Did the right couple go home? My answer is that it’s always the right couple. It sounds like a cop-out, but it’s true. The audience votes and we score. If the question is: “Is Brant Dougherty a better dancer than Bill Engvall?” The answer is a loud and resounding “Yes.” But our results have always been a combination of the judges’ scores and America’s votes. That’s much more interesting than just letting the judges call the score. Although right about now, a lot of people wish it were only the judges’ scores that counted. Our combined scoring method is what makes it so fun and so different. No other show has judges who actually give a numeric score. They usually give their opinions, but that’s it. Its part of what I think makes our show so fun, so I always respect the way it all turns out. I’m sad and sometimes shocked at the results, but I respect the way our show works.

ETA3: Sorry for the delay as I had to work today. I am just now getting caught up with the On The Red Carpet and Afterbuzz TV interviews. From these interviews, we find out some dance info for next week. Derek and Amber have the Salsa and the Quickstep. They have picked Mark for their trio dance. Jack and Cheryl have a Samba with Sharna and a V. Waltz. Bill and Emma have The Charleston for their individual dance. They don’t mention what is their trio dance, but, they have picked Peta for it. Corbin and Karina have picked Witney for their trio dance. Val and Elizabeth have picked Gleb. Leah and Tony have picked Henry. Be sure to take in all of these new interviews here and here. JC and George do a super job as always.

DWTS Season 17, Week 7 – Let’s Recap Tonight’s Show!! (SPOILERS)

Great opening dance by Mandy Moore!

The Big ANNOUNCEMENT is that Cher is performing and guest judging – BFD. I mean, really? That warranted me not missing the first few minutes?? You’re going to be pimping the crap out of it for the next 7 days!! Is Cher on a label affiliated with ABC/Disney???

Derek is dressed to Dance!!

Brant and Liz both use a shit ton of frippery and once again don’t get called on it. We’ll see if anyone does tonight. Wonder if Derek has any frippery.

Len is still in love with Liz.

Bruno says Brant went off time a couple times and still gives a 9. Right. AND he slipped on the skirt. Right.

Team Spooky Bon Bom is smack talking – biggest smack talkers usually lose.

ETA: Team FoxingAwesome easily wins the Team dance – wasn’t as close as the scores imply, IMO, just based on the fact that FA had actual dance moves in their dance. And Ballroom to boot.

SPOILERS!!!

Bill and Nicole were the last two standing – and I’m pissed that we lost the darling Nicole while Leah still darkens our dance floor.

Sorry, Rioters – I cannot celebrate with you. Nicole was a better dancer, even though I liked both couples very much.
