PureDWTS Season 21: Alfonso Ribeiro Does AMA Reddit, Talks About DWTS, All-Stars, & The Carlton Dance

Just a quick little piece of fluff on this Sunday evening 🙂 A few days ago, Alfonso did a Reddit AMA (“ask me anything”) chat, and fielded questions from Redditers on everything from Fresh Prince, AFV, Tom Bergeron, his Pepsi commercial, and DWTS. A few interesting things he had to say about DWTS, and a couple adorable little bits about Heidi & I’s favorite Ribeiro, A.J.:

On the hardest part of DWTS:

[–]AlfonsoRibeiroAMAAlfonso Ribeiro[S]

The hardest part was in the 14 weeks on the show I only had 2 days off. It is incredibly brutal on your body especially if you didn’t come in in great shape.

On getting a 2nd chance at DWTS:

[–]AlfonsoRibeiroAMAAlfonso Ribeiro[S]

I would do an All-Star season of DWTS, but if I didn’t have Witney I would probably want Lindsey as they grew up together and dance very much the same. Plus, she was already part of team Witfonso.

On his Halloween costume:

I’m really liking the Ritz-Carlton idea, but I think I’m going to be a bear.

My two boys are going to be a lion and a tiger, I’m the bear and my wife will have a shirt that says “Oh My!”

On how often he gets asked to dance:

Every day I leave my house! The only time I don’t ever get asked to dance is at the house. Oh wait a minute… my son asks me to dance every day. Just not the Carlton.

It’s a good, fluffy read, if you’re looking for something to do.

PureDWTS Season 17 Rant: Really, Really Dumb Ideas About the Show (Courtesy of Facebook & Instagram)

After Elizabeth & Val’s elimination last Monday night, against my better judgement, I decided to see what fans on the DWTS Instagram page were saying about the results.  Of course I instantly regretted this decision, because I saw more than a few hystrionic, irrational, and downright idiotic complaints about everything from the scoring to the voting to the overall format of the show.  I also witnessed a horrifying lack of command of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and overall coherence when conversing in the English language 😯 And here’s what really grinds my gears: nothing has changed, guys.  The show’s scoring has been calculated the same way for 17 seasons now (50% judges’ scores, 50% viewer votes), we’ve had the same 3 judges for every season, and this is FAR from being the only voting shakeup we’ve seen in 17 seasons.  So why is everyone suddenly up in arms about it now?

We may never know for sure, but I can say this: some of the Instagram & Facebook DWTS fans have got some really, REALLY dumb ideas about the show – ideas that I’m proud to say that our Pure readers would recognize as pure poppycock in a heartbeat 😉 So of course, I just had to find a way to show you guys some of these gems – both for humor purposes and educational purposes.  All of these are actual comments, either on the DWTS Facebook page or the Instagram page, and all were posted publicly – so I’m within my rights to republish them here; but because some of these ideas are some real turds, I’ve taken pity on the commentor & blurred out any identifying details, except for the first name – cause it’s a helluva lot easier to refer to them by some name than by “idiot #1, idiot #2, idiot #3, etc”.  😉

Really Stupid Idea #1: The judges’ scores should have more weight.

dwtsdumbidea1

No offense, mimi, but where have you been the past 16 seasons???

I shouldn’t even have to elaborate on why this is a downright TERRIBLE idea, but I’m going to anyway because clearly some of the simple-minded folk that are backing this turd of notion don’t seem to understand that this is likely not going to have the effect they think it will. I’m guessing they assume that judges’ scores being weighted more heavily = good dancers stay, bad dancers go.  But apparently they don’t realize that the judges aren’t exactly infallible & objective – far from it, as we’ve witnessed over 17 seasons. The judges are capable of some pretty blatant favoritism towards some contestants (William Levy, anyone?) and have undeservingly HOSED other contestants (Ralph Macchio fans, this is where you nod in agreement).  They also have a tendency to “pity score” some contestants to soften the blow (*cough*BRISTOLPALIN*cough*), with the unexpected effect of said contestants outstaying their welcome.  And then there’s their personal biases: Carrie Ann & Bruno are both easily swayed by attractive young men (regardless of how well they can actually dance), while Carrie Ann seems to turn into a green-eyed monster when it comes to scoring attractive young women, and tends to take some cheap shots when critiquing them. Len has a tendency to scold Derek at least once a season, and hand out an absurdly low score as a result.  And of course, Carrie Ann’s dubious lift-policing seems to have an effect as well…just ask Corbin & Karina, who earlier this season were penalized for a lift that didn’t even exist. We’ve also talked about the “man behind the curtain” possibly exerting some influence over the judging as well – seemed awfully convenient that William Levy was getting worshipped by the judges week after week (whether or not he was actually worthy of the worship), when he was set to launch a huge deal for Univision (which is part of the ABC family…hmmmm). People REALLY want to give these clowns even MORE power? I feel like just last year, people were complaining about how the judges were terrible and needed to be replaced!!! Another point to consider: the viewers need to feel invested in this show – they need to feel like they have a say in who stays and who goes.  And the minute you start making them feel like their vote doesn’t count or counts less is the minute you start losing viewers.  Even those that don’t always vote seem to take comfort in the fact that the viewers do have the power to overturn a bad score from the judges. Melissa Rycroft Discusses Winning the DWTS Title, Dance Experience, And More

Melissa Rycroft tells Pegasus News that she and Tony thought for sure Shawn and Derek had won Dancing With The Stars last week. They both had to take a minute and think “Is this really happening? Did this really just happen?” She discusses more about winning the title at the link, but, I thought this take was interesting about why she did the show for a second time. She also discusses “dance experience” and if that can help or hurt a person on Dancing With The Stars. See if you agree as I think she makes a great point. Just because a person has dance experience means that someone will win this show and it’s not just as hard and challenging for them. How many times has Heidi told us that?!

This was your second time on the show; why did you decide to compete again?

It took me a little bit to make the decision, because Season 8 for me was such a highlight. It was perfect — the stars aligned, and I knew at the time I was coming off of all The Bachelor hoopla, and so in my mind that was kind of what propelled me to the finals … I was hesitant coming in to the all-star season because I didn’t have that anymore. [I asked myself], what if I don’t have the audience behind me now, now that I don’t have the drama and this experience that was so magical just ends on a dead note? Ultimately, I went, “This was one of the greatest experiences of my life, and if you have the opportunity to do something like that again, why wouldn’t you?” So I just said let’s do it.

Do you think your dance background helped you at all?

I wish dance experience helped you on the show … you’ve got the athletes that are trained to perfect themselves … you’ve got the actors who can emotionally get into character, and then you have the musicians who can hear music in ways that other people can’t hear it. Sometimes in the competition, that can actually hurt you. You can overdo it, your body may not react the way it should, and that’s what I experienced … from dancing with the [Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders] … everything that I had known from that was wrong in ballroom, and it hindered that. Tony actually had to erase what I knew because I wasn’t coming in as a blank slate.

Heidi: This is a classy, classy girl. Tony take note. This was my favorite part of the interview:

In Season 8, you were edged out of the top spot by Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson. How does it feel to come back in Season 15 and beat her?

As much as everybody would love it, there was no competition between Shawn and I. Shawn and I were actually very good friends this time around. We pushed each other; we picked each other back up. I’ll be honest I was happy to make it to the finals. The three woman that made it, to me — we were all winners walking in on Monday night to have accomplished what we did. To come out on top is an unbelievable feeling. Like I said, it still hasn’t sunk in, and I don’t look at it as “You beat an individual person” or “There was one group we were after.” It’s just it was amazing to be standing at the end of the competition as talented as this one was.

She had the right attitude, for sure. I’m thinking she was raised right. 🙂 She is right on target about the dance experience debate – the only thing I would add is that, while it can be a disadvantage, she’s not the only person who has that disadvantage. She frames it like “all these other people have these great qualities while I have dance experience which is actually a disadvantage.” I know what she’s saying, but that’s a tad simplistic. EVERYONE has an advantage of some kind, and I think that the only one that is greater than the others is likely youth. Of course, dance experience, being an athlete, being an actor – all those are going to have more advantage than, say, a stand up comic or a model. But Melissa falls into neither of those latter categories. Everyone also has a disadvantage, just like she did. Shawn had to work on her emotional connection, Kelly was so shakey a lot of the time, Apolo…well, I can’t think of any Apolo flaws, but that’s probably just me. 😉

Tony Dovolani: From Dancing With The Stars To His Golf Game (New Interview)

The Morning Blend interviewed Dancing With The Stars champ Tony Dovolani on his win with Melissa Rycroft. Other than his kids being born, it was one of the highest moments of his life. He is still “pinching” himself. “Did that really happen?” They also talk of Tony’s golf game which he continued to play during the season of Dancing With The Stars. He is at an “index” of 2 (what does that mean? Can someone explain?). He talks of how Dancing With The Stars has helped his game and the pressure when golfing. He also gives his thoughts and predictions on Tiger Woods. Interesting interview!!

DWTS Tony Dovolani Talks About Landslide Victory, Wants Paula Abdul As A Judge, and More (Video)

Wendy Williams praised Tony Dovolani for how good he looks on her show. He says he owes it all to the Dancing With The Stars finals. He thanks Wendy for all of her support. They run through how he and Melissa approached the show. He also mentions how he and Melissa won by a landslide of votes (really? I have a hard time believing that! Then again, there were a lot of voting issues with the official site and phones that could have played a part from what Derek Hough fans have said when they tried to vote.). They also discuss the judges and needing a shake up. Tony would like to have Paula Abdul be a judge. Lots more below….

General Hospital Preview With Val Chmerkovskiy, Talks Of New Reality Show With Brother Maks (Videos)

“Were they or weren’t they”? That’s the question Wendy Williams asks the audience as Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy sat down to be interviewed on the Wendy Show today. Then she asks Val about the current idea of Maks and Val starting a new reality show. Val says they are currently still thinking the idea over and “they definitely want to do it”. More below including Kelly talking a little about General Hospital.

Speaking of, George Pennacchio of ABC7 in Los Angeles did a nice little spread on Val and his guest role coming up on General Hospital. The video below gives a little preview of Val in action on the set. Don’t forget, you’ll be able to watch his appearance on General Hospital on December 10th.

ADDING: Kelly and Val were also interviewed by VH1….

Post Media Roundup After Dancing With The Stars Ending Finale Part 2 (Videos)

Our three finalists on Dancing With The Stars were also on Good Morning America today. They look a little tired after flying all night from Los Angeles to New York City, but, they are in fun and rare form as always. They also play a “Two To Tango” game about knowing their partners. More here including a special message for Shawn at the end. Keep watching the link, ABC may post more videos of them being interviewed, etc.. If they don’t and you need another way to watch them, you can watch them at Codebear’s Dancing With The Stars Daily Motion channel here.

Below is some coverage from ET Online as well. Tony and Melissa are so cute with their reactions on winning. Some of the other couples also have some special words for them….

Here is more with PopTVDotCom on the after party…

For part one of our media round up and if you haven’t read or seen it yet, see our previous posting.

ADDING: For their On The Red Carpet interviews, go here. Also, don’t miss reading this new Extra piece. Below is a take. Though I have to say I think Maks is so rude for what he said.

“I’m still in shock,” said Dovolani, who won the Mirror Ball trophy for the first time since he’s been on the show. “I’m holding it close to my body because I don’t want it to not be real. I want it to stay like this.”

Tony continued, “Fourteen seasons I waited for this. My wife was in the audience and it’s our anniversary today, 13th year, so for me this means so much.”

Fellow dancer Maks Chmerkovskiy was happy for his friend. “He truly earned it,” laughingly adding, “He deserved it from all those ridiculous partners he had. Whoever you are, you know who you are.”

Pro-dancer Derek Hough also hinted that this may be his last season on “DWTS.” He told Renee, “I’ll always want to be a part of the show. I love it to death. It’s been amazing,” but, “It feels like a good way to segue…”

In parting words, Dovolani, who has been one of “Extra’s” special correspondents, smiled, “You know what’s next for me professionally? That mic!”

Post Media Roundup After Dancing With The Stars Ending Finale (Videos)

Lot’s of media on tap for today after the crowning the Dancing With The Stars All Stars Champs (All of them! They are truly all winners in my opinion!), but, here’s what we’ve got so far with Jimmy Kimmel, Access Hollywood, and E News. First, let’s go straight to Jimmy Kimmel. He says even though ABC has declared Melissa and Tony the winners, they are still waiting for the votes in Florida to make it legal. He’s a hoot as usual!

Access Hollywood:

Below is a take from E News. Note how Melissa thought Shawn had won. Kelly is not disappointed she didn’t win. They are all winners….

“To be honest, when it was the two of us there I assumed [Shawn] won. I thought, ‘Keep your smile on,'” Melissa revealed about being up there with the Olympic gymnast and Derek Hough, adding that she and Tony went into shock when their name was called.

Meanwhile, Kelly and Val Chmerkovskiy were not upset that they came in third.

“No, there is nothing to be disappointed about with this all-star season,” Kelly told us backstage. “It was anyone’s win. We were all winners. Melissa didn’t have one of those stupid mirror balls, and Val is young enough, he has enough seasons left in him. I think Tony deserved it, he’s been here probably one of the longest.”

The are-they-or-aren’t-they couple plan to celebrate with “a perpetual cycle of champagne bottles,” according to Val.

“I can’t wait to be so hungover that I have to be in bed for three days,” laughed Kelly.
