Dancing with the Stars Season 17 Contestant Valerie Harper Passes Away at 80

The great thing about having DWTS around for so many seasons is that we grow attached to so many celebs that have done the show.  The sad thing about DWTS being around so long is that those celebs continue to age…and inevitably, we lose some 🙁 Such is the case with season 17 contestant Valerie Harper, who passed away today at the age of 80 after a courageous battle with cancer, per Yahoo:

Valerie Harper — best known as Rhoda Morgenstern, the feisty, scarf-wearing best friend of Mary Richards in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spin-off, Rhoda — has died, eight days after her 80th birthday.

Harper’s daughter, Cristina Cacciotti, confirmed the news on Twitter. The actress passed away at 10:06 a.m. Friday “after years of fighting cancer,” but the family did not immediately disclose her cause of death.

Asked in a 2007 interview what she’d want on her tombstone, Harper answered, “‘She was in the game.’ I love to inspire people. I’d like to be remembered in a way that they would take action. I love to get people moving [to better themselves]. I’d like to be remembered for energy. Pulling people on the dance floor!”

And pull us onto the dance floor,  she did – I loved how her philosophy on her season of DWTS was all about “living in the moment” despite her terminal diagnosis, and how she continued to defy the odds with her resilience and kept on living life to the fullest. She really did “carry on”…

Valerie is the second DWTS contestant to leave us, after season 11’s Florence Henderson passed in late 2016. Here’s hoping Valerie gets a commemorative star on the DWTS floor just like Flo’s 🙂 Sending love and prayers to Valerie’s friends, family, and fans during this difficult time.

Dancing with the Stars: The Jeopardy Theory

Every season, readers get very confused by the concepts of “bottom two” versus “jeopardy”. If you don’t listen carefully to what Tom and Brooke (now Erin) say, it’s easy to get confused. If a couple is in the bottom two, it means that they, along with the eliminated couple, had the lowest combined score. The combined score is determined by viewer votes and judges scores. The formula is relatively simple: they take a couple’s score and divide it by the total points handed out on a given night to get their share of the judges scores. They do the same with the viewer votes; they divide a couple’s number of votes by the total number of votes cast and come up with their share of the votes. They then add the two numbers together; the couple with the lowest combined total is then sent home.  You can see many examples of this in my series of posts called “Dancing by the Numbers”.

When the show is airing, there are two ways of getting to an elimination, by putting three couples in jeopardy (oh, the drama) and then saving one, and then one of the remaining two goes home. And then there is the straight up identification of the “bottom two” couples. Tom will say “the bottom two” if this is the case. If neither Tom nor Brooke (now Erin) says “these are the bottom two” then we don’t actually know if the two people standing at the end are really the low combined score getters. There are multiple reasons why they like do this. The main reason, of course, is DRAMA. How they love their drama. They like to make the show exciting and if the low scorer was immediately sent home every week, what fun would that be? This past week, you’ll note that Tom and Erin made it clear that Cody and Witney were “not necessarily” the bottom two.

The question that is asked every season is: does “jeopardy” (aka, being the last couple called safe) have any real meaning for the couples put there??  The answer is yes, of course. The problem is determining what that meaning is at the time. That is very difficult to do, although we’ve gotten pretty good at figuring it out every season.  You always have to remember a few key things:

  • The producers want to keep the show exciting, and jeopardy is a part of that;
  • The producers often have a reason why they want to keep a particular couple around longer and motivating fan bases to vote harder can be accomplished by “jeopardy” if they think the votes are too low;
  • Drama, drama, drama!! How exciting is it when the high scorer of the night is standing next to the low scorer of the night and you don’t know who’s going to survive – and the producers fool you into thinking that the low person is for sure going home…and then they don’t?

Yeah, I don’t think it’s really that exciting at this point in the show’s history, but I’ve long said that the producers have lost touch with their audience. 🙂

Now, since I’m the biggest nerd of a blogger on this site, I wondered if there was any kind of pattern to the “jeopardy” and the subsequent eliminations. So I made tables of seasons 11 through 17 to try and figure it out. Hindsight is 20/20 – but it can inform how you watch the show going forward.  The answer, as you may have guessed, is that yes there is something of a pattern. Sometimes. And it’s an easy one to see when you’re looking back – but still impossible to be sure of when you’re watching the show in real time. 🙂 That is unlikely to change. Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Season 18 – PRO WATCH!!

It’s that time of year once again, boys and girls – time for Pro Watch. 🙂  It will be very interesting to see what happens this year, after they let go of the band. That was a huge cost savings to them. The question is: are they looking to save even more money (say goodbye to Derek and possibly Cheryl) or have they saved so much that they can afford the popular, long term pros that have kept people coming back to this show season after season? I personally think that they will do what they can to hold on to Derek – he’s an Emmy winner and that’s very helpful to the show’s cache. I think they will also do their best to hold on to Cheryl, Karina and Mark. I’m GUESSING that Val and Tristan are still locked into contracts that are beneficial to ABC so they aren’t in question as long as they find a partner for them.  As always, I could be wrong. 🙂 Read more..

More “Never Seen Before” DWTS Media, Derek Hough Edgier Than Ever In New Photo Shoot, And More

Derek-and-Amber-Freestyle-57

Be sure you head to Pure Derek Hough when you get a chance!! Miss Heidi has been working hard in her spare time making screencaps, videos, and more of Dancing With The Stars Season 17 Champs Derek Hough and Amber Riley. As you can see above, the “hot guy” caps are my fave. 😀

Thanks for a rare find from Linz, Pure Derek Hough is also featuring some BTS video of camera blocking. It features all of the dancers getting ready for the finale including some footage that what wasn’t featured on GMA.

Also, you can preview a glimpse into the new issue of Annex Man Magazine which is featuring a new photo shoot with Derek….and let’s just say, I’ve never seen Derek be so edgy. The creativity behind this shoot is very Lady Gaga/Madonna/Vampire like in some of the pics. Way cool and high fashion at it’s finest. More at this link if interested!!

Also, after Thanksgiving, People posted an interview with Tristan MacManus and Valerie Harper that was filmed after the finale of Dancing With The Stars. She gave an update on her health. I loved when she said, “What’s to complain about?” Note too that she’s planning to celebrate the holidays with her family and she’s not planning to look back, but, only looking forward. Below is more. She’s so amazing and so inspirational.

As she looks forward to celebrating the holidays with her family – something that she wasn’t sure she’d live to see – Harper is savoring every day, telling PEOPLE, “I’m not looking back. I’m only looking forward.”

ABC Media Net is also reporting these ratings and numbers….

ABC’s Monday Finale of “Dancing with the Stars” is the Top Entertainment Show And Outdraws NBC’s “The Voice” by its Largest Margin of the Season

Hitting a Season High, ABC is the Most-Watched Net on the Sweep’s Final Tuesday, With the “Dancing” Season Finale Finishing as the Night’s Dominant No. 1 TV Show

The “Dancing with the Stars” Finale Earns 6-Month Highs for ABC in its Time Period

Monday:

“Dancing with the Stars” (8:00-10:01 p.m. – 14.6 million and 2.2/6 in AD18-49):

Building its numbers on night 1 of its 2-night season finale, ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” was Monday’s most-watched entertainment show for the 5th week in a row. Bill Engvall was the next celebrity dancer eliminated from the competition. Growing week to week in Total Viewers (+6%) and Adults 18-49 (+10%), “DWTS” drew its biggest audience since its season premiere and scored a 9-week high with young adults – since 9/16/13 and 9/23/13, respectively.

Tuesday:

ABC finished as the dominant most-watched TV network on the final Tuesday of the November Sweep (+1.2 million over second-place CBS – 13.0 million vs. 11.8 million) and ranked No. 1 in Adults 18-49 (2.5/7-tied w/CBS). ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” finale stood as Tuesday’s most-watched TV show by 20% over runner-up CBS’ “NCIS: LA” (14.8 million vs. 12.3 million from 9:00-10:00 p.m.) and “S.H.I.E.L.D.” was night’s No. 1 scripted series in Adults 18-49.

“Dancing with the Stars” (9:01-11:00 p.m. – 14.8 million and 2.4/7 in AD18-49):

From 9:00-11:00 p.m., the season finale of “Dancing with the Stars” made ABC the No. 1 network in the 2-hour time period with Total Viewers and key Women (W18-49/W25-54), while ranking as the top broadcaster with Kids 2-11. Dominating its final half-hour from 10:30-11:00 p.m., as Amber Riley won the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy, “Dancing” delivered 15.6 million viewers and a 2.6/8 in Adults 18-49 to lead its nearest competition (CBS’ “Person of Interest” = 11.8 million and 2.1/6) by 3.8 million viewers and by 24% in young adults.

Let’s see if Heidi has something to add….

Heidi: Well, the “rank” means very little when it comes to ratings. Throw 15 football games up there and knock it out of the top 10 and that won’t hurt it as long as the same or more people are watching the show, if you know what I mean. The important points to come out of the above are that it is still beating the Voice in total viewer numbers AND it’s still growing week to week. Six percent growth from the semi-finals to the finals is nothing to sneeze at, for sure (take note, Maks fans).  The finale (results show) was down from the all star season…but what do you expect when people get OUT of the habit of watching DWTS on Tuesday night??  Not to mention that the ALL Star Season was a bit of an anomaly.  I think the producers were on crack when they thought that the ratings for that season were down because no one wants to see great dancing. Bull. Your show is aging, and TV viewership is falling across the board. You can’t look at it in a vacuum.  All TV continues to sink in viewer number – except probably cable.  People have more choices now.  Looking at it very simply…this is where the Rank plays a part. How can DWTS STILL be Top 10 show while still falling in ratings season after season?? Simple…because ALL TV is falling season after season. If DWTS were the only show with declining viewer numbers, it would have fallen out of the Top 10 by now.

Heidi Still: And for those who insist that a particular guest judge – be it Julianne OR Maks – has a dramatic impact on ratings…guess again. Here are the total viewers each week:

September 16 – 16.01
September 23 – 13.4
September 30 – 13.1
October 7 – 13
October 14 – 12.99
October 21 – 13.35
October 28 – 13.28
November 4 – 13.72
November 11 – 12.57 (pre-empted in Boston and Charlotte = 3% of the US Market)
November 18 – 13.8
November 25 – 14.2

As you can see, the season starts out very high and then drops consistently until week 5, when it starts inching it’s way back up again. If not for November 11th, it would show fairly consistent growth from a mid season low to the season finale. From what I can see, the only thing having a major impact on ratings was the pre-empting in Boston and Charlotte. Everything else falls on a very nice curve – very similar to curves shown when I graphed previous seasons. It appears that the theory that people want to watch bad dancing may not be true. How else do you explain that people tune in to the first show, then fall out until past the halfway point??
