Dancing with the Stars: The Jeopardy Theory

Every season, readers get very confused by the concepts of “bottom two” versus “jeopardy”. If you don’t listen carefully to what Tom and Brooke (now Erin) say, it’s easy to get confused. If a couple is in the bottom two, it means that they, along with the eliminated couple, had the lowest combined score. The combined score is determined by viewer votes and judges scores. The formula is relatively simple: they take a couple’s score and divide it by the total points handed out on a given night to get their share of the judges scores. They do the same with the viewer votes; they divide a couple’s number of votes by the total number of votes cast and come up with their share of the votes. They then add the two numbers together; the couple with the lowest combined total is then sent home.  You can see many examples of this in my series of posts called “Dancing by the Numbers”.

When the show is airing, there are two ways of getting to an elimination, by putting three couples in jeopardy (oh, the drama) and then saving one, and then one of the remaining two goes home. And then there is the straight up identification of the “bottom two” couples. Tom will say “the bottom two” if this is the case. If neither Tom nor Brooke (now Erin) says “these are the bottom two” then we don’t actually know if the two people standing at the end are really the low combined score getters. There are multiple reasons why they like do this. The main reason, of course, is DRAMA. How they love their drama. They like to make the show exciting and if the low scorer was immediately sent home every week, what fun would that be? This past week, you’ll note that Tom and Erin made it clear that Cody and Witney were “not necessarily” the bottom two.

The question that is asked every season is: does “jeopardy” (aka, being the last couple called safe) have any real meaning for the couples put there??  The answer is yes, of course. The problem is determining what that meaning is at the time. That is very difficult to do, although we’ve gotten pretty good at figuring it out every season.  You always have to remember a few key things:

  • The producers want to keep the show exciting, and jeopardy is a part of that;
  • The producers often have a reason why they want to keep a particular couple around longer and motivating fan bases to vote harder can be accomplished by “jeopardy” if they think the votes are too low;
  • Drama, drama, drama!! How exciting is it when the high scorer of the night is standing next to the low scorer of the night and you don’t know who’s going to survive – and the producers fool you into thinking that the low person is for sure going home…and then they don’t?

Yeah, I don’t think it’s really that exciting at this point in the show’s history, but I’ve long said that the producers have lost touch with their audience. 🙂

Now, since I’m the biggest nerd of a blogger on this site, I wondered if there was any kind of pattern to the “jeopardy” and the subsequent eliminations. So I made tables of seasons 11 through 17 to try and figure it out. Hindsight is 20/20 – but it can inform how you watch the show going forward.  The answer, as you may have guessed, is that yes there is something of a pattern. Sometimes. And it’s an easy one to see when you’re looking back – but still impossible to be sure of when you’re watching the show in real time. 🙂 That is unlikely to change. Read more..

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

PureDWTS 2013 Hollywood Reporter Makes Emmy Predictions For The Reality Categories

Hollywood Reporter is making some early predictions for who might win an Emmy in the “Reality” categories!! Note how their analyst, Scott Feinberg, “expects “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance” to split the vote of dance fans and allow “The Amazing Race” to win yet again, and “Deadliest Catch” to pick up its second statuette in three years.” (Huh? No, please no! We want Dancing With The Stars to win!) Below is a take about Dancing With The Stars for Scott’s pros and cons….

Dancing With the Stars (ABC)

PRO: The show helped to make dancing cool again by pairing celebs with pros and sending them off to be judged. It has been a bridesmaid in this category every year since 2006 but received a category-leading nine noms this year, including one for host Tom Bergeron (his sixth in a row), last year’s winner.

CON: Two dance shows could split the support of the genre’s fans, and So You Think You Can Dance received four choreography noms versus DWTS’ two.

More at Hollywood Reporter. Let’s hope the predictions keep coming. To see our previous posting on the 2013 Emmy Nominations, visit this link.

Dancing With The Stars Derek Hough To Help Choreograph And Perform On Primetime Emmy Awards

Gear up, the Emmy Awards are going to be even more exciting this year! Not only has Dancing With The Stars Derek Hough been nominated for two awards, he will also be choreographing and dancing in a big production in the Primetime airing on September 22nd, 8:00pm ET/5:00pm PT. Below are some fun details from Hollywood Reporter. As always, be sure to read the link for even more. When you are finished, head on over to Pure Derek Hough. Heidi has even more updates on all things Derek currently including new pics and his upcoming scheduled appearances.

Ehrlich found an innovative way to deliver the news about the plan to the nominated choreographers — Derek Hough (a double nominee for Dancing With the Stars); Allison Holker, who is not only nominated for Dancing With the Stars, but is a dancer in two of the nominated numbers; and four other nominees, all nominated for So You Think You Can Dance: Sonya Tayeh and Mandy Jo Moore, Napoleon D’umo and Travis Wall.

Ehrlich and the Academy invited the choreography nominees last week to a special reception in their honor. “Once they were there, we sprung it on them,” said Ehrlich. “Neil came and announced, ‘Yes, of course we want to celebrate their nominations, but basically we wanted them to choreograph a number collectively that would be one on the show.’ ”

The events at the reception were taped, and most of the other work on the number will also be taped for a kind of reality show documentary to be shown as part of the presentation on the Primetime Emmys. “It’s obviously a very innovative thing to do,” added Ehrlich.

The choreographers will meet this week to figure out what they will do for the Emmys telecast. One option being bandied includes the choreographers themselves dancing, and each has been invited to hire two of their favorite dancers for the number (likely from the shows they were nominated for). The chance of big-name performers taking part is improbable but remains undecided.

However, Ehrlich said they have been given a budget, which will limit how much they can spend on the dancers and production.

But don’t expect the dance number to open up the Emmys, Ehrlich commented. Instead, it will occur somewhere in “the body of the show.”

“It’s definitely going to be an original number,” said Ehrlich, “something that hasn’t been done before. It’s going to utilize the talents of all of them to put this number together as choreographers.”

Katie Couric Site: ‘Do you want to see Katie on “Dancing with the Stars”?’ (Watch Repeat)

Hey all and for those interested, don’t miss seeing a repeat episode of The Katie Show today. This past May, Dancing With The Stars judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, and Bruno Tonioli guessed on the show as well as hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke Charvet. They talk of the 300th episode of Dancing With The Stars. Pro Louis Van Amstel also shows Katie some dance moves and then they dance. However, what’s extra is fun in watching this episode again is the cast trying to coax Katie into dancing for Dancing With The Stars Season 17. So, be sure to watch. You can also see our previous posting with videos of this episode at this link. I love too how they have this page set up at her site asking viewers if they’d like to see Katie on Dancing With The Stars.

Yes, I’m still holding onto this (pipe?) dream. Smiley-Begging
