PureDWTS Season 24: Why Normani Didn’t Win

So, to say that the four days following the announcement of the winner of season 24 of DWTS have been “interesting”, would be an understatement 😛 I’ve seen mainly rejoicing, but also some general rage from the Harmonizers, who simply can’t fathom how Normani came in 3rd place and insist that the show must be rigged/racist/sexist/capitalist/whatever-ist because she didn’t win. While this is unfortunately the type of behavior many of us have come to expect from that particular group of fans, there have been a few fans that have sincerely expressed a desire to know why I think Normani didn’t win.  So here is my sincere response – if you are genuinely puzzled as to how it happened, this is my personal opinion, backed up with some numbers and some general observations about voting behavior. Very little of this actually has anything to do with Normani herself – most of these are factors that were out of her control, out of her fans’ control, and weren’t really things that anyone (other than maybe the executive producers) could have done anything to fix. I think Normani herself was just kind of a victim of circumstance this season – just not destined to win, for whatever reason. So the cries of “You’re just being mean to Normani!!!”? Keep ’em to yourself or GTFO.

So if you are genuinely interested, read on – and if you can remain civil and level-headed, feel free to comment or ask questions. But if you’re just here to complain about us or just generally be obnoxious, I will delete comments and permanently blacklist posters without a second thought – I’ve never witnessed the same level of vitriol from some fanbases as I saw this season.  I have no time for it. I looked for this earlier, but for some reason I didn’t get Al’s DM!!  But here it is now, for anyone having withdrawal. 🙂

DWTS Season 24, THE FINALE – LIVE BLOG (Spoilers)

Okay, REMEMBER THE RULES of show night. DO NOT constantly hit refresh. DO NOT post one line comments.  Save your comments until you have a few that you can put into one post. Please include context so people who the hell you’re talking about. Comment moderation is still turned on, so content refreshing won’t get you anywhere.

Also, according to George P. Emma and Rashad are doing Cha Cha/Tango for their fusion and the dance order is the same as it was last night.

Opening was kind of a non-event. Love the little “journey” package they did for David.  Looking forward to Rashad’s. Interesting they show a clip of Normani and it’s a high kick.  I wonder…. 😉

Damn, don’t like when they mess with the order like that and put Rashad’s package second. Makes me uneasy.

So, Rashad beat the other two contestants by 100 HOURS in rehearsal.  If he doesn’t win, I’ll be pissed.

So shocking that Heather can holder her own with the professional girls.  Heh.  Is this the dance choreod by Witney?? Better than what Mandy normally comes up with.  Hah. Thanks Tom.

Not impressed with Hailie Steinfeld – feel like I’m looking at Val’s next partner in her first ballroom getup.

Spare me, Val. Normani would absolutely make the cut as one of the best ever…if paired with Derek or Mark.

I see we’re back to featuring Maks. Ya know, this show survived quite well without him for a few weeks. Witney did better with the women than the men did. It was all right, but not fabulous.

Don’t like how they have this staged – starting to feel like a Normani edit. I will be so pissed and over this show. The press is resurrecting all their Normani articles – whether that’s at the request of DWTS PR or at their own thoughts on who’s going to win.

Loved the huge dance number and how it traveled all over. Peta is wearing more fabric than all her last season’s costumes put together. Girl, you look fab. Then I saw Hayley and her killer bod and I commiserated with her.

Good Lord, there’s still an hour and a half. I don’ think I’m going to make it.

Nancy is such a classy lady.  And a damn fine dancer too.  She could have won on another season.  She made me appreciate Artem too.

I love guys who can play up the whole bromance thing.  This is one of the reasons I loved Nick this season – he doesn’t take himself too seriously. Nice, dry sense of humor.  I should say that this is also why I prefer Maks over Val – Maks seems more genuine when screwing around like this.

Peta looks stunning in red with a red lip. Stunning. And Nick ain’t so bad either.

Was this Magic Mike number more OTT than it was last time? LOL.

I do love bloopers.  😀

Whoa, severe flashback to Derek and Chelsea – same song, similar outfits, similar dance moves.  Very similar. Wow.

Damn, they’re still doing the Normani wins edit. Shit.

Damn #2 – Derek was on the Voice tonight and I missed it cuz this crap.

Best thing about that dance was Len and Bruno doing their thang. 😀

My god, will this show ever end? This is ungodly painful. I could be reading. Or sleeping, since I’m still coughing.

Okay, that Mr. T bit was cheesy brilliance. 🙂 Love that Mr. T.

Nicole Scherzinger – legit one of the best women to dance on this show.

BTW, Dirty Dancing is getting seriously bad reviews and it’s in large part due to this dude who is NOT a good dancer. He even makes Nicole look a bit awkward.

David and Lindsay do a Foxtrot/Salsa fusion…finally…and it’s not too bad actually. Love David so much – their package was just great. Probably the hardest fusion we’re going to see tonight, I think.

AT/Foxtrot fusion for Normani and Val. Since Val isn’t any better at Fusion than he is freestyle, this should be interesting.

CAI telegraphing a Normani win with her comments.  Of course she can pick it up fast, Julianne, she’s trained. YOU can pick it up that quick too, right??

God, get the mic away from Val. So pompous and smug.

QUIT HITTING REFRESH!! Already having trouble with the site. And that makes me cranky.

Great fusion from Rashad and Emma – very fun like they are. Think Emma made her point to the producers clearly enough?? Straight at the camera – I don’t know if I will ever get this again. Yeah, no kidding.

CAI telegraphing now that Normani and Rashad may be a toss up. Shit, Len is not going with 10s. Unusual – either he’s lost by a lot or he’s won by enough that Len isn’t afraid of changing the outcome.

THIRD PLACE – Normani and Val.  So much for those 500k votes.  Thank you baby jesus. Now, I would really want Rashad to win, but damn, David – nothing would shout louder to the producers to keep their mitts off the damn show.

Winners – RASHAD and Emma!!!

Why are they going outside? Fucking stupid way to handle this. Let the have their camera time and celebrate. Hey, Val and Maks aren’t crying in a corner?? That’s a positive development!! Personal growth!!

Dancing With The Stars Season 24, The FINALE – Dancing by the Numbers!

Well, conventional wisdom says that Rashad should win. Best freestyle compared to a rather crap one by Normani. He’s at the top of the leader board. The judges raved over him. They were lukewarm on Normani. Rashad went last. I can’t even tell you how many times they danced in the order they finished. All the “Rashad is the winner” signals were there.

But here’s where I have a problem. We have new producers. And they might not fall into the same patterns that they used to. They could be engineering a shocking win. Read more..

DWTS Season 24, Week 10 – LIVE BLOG (Spoilers)

Well, I made it to my destination in time for the shit show. But I must go find a beer or something. I don’t think I can do this show straight. 😀

Just heard about the explosions in Manchester – our thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the UK.  Horrible stuff.

New music and choreo for the re-do dances, David is up first.  Love David and Lindsay both – hope he pulls off a great dance.

A little skippy here at one point, but his but is mostly in and it seems like he’s leading.. Lindsay’s dance is stunning. Beautiful dance from David – say what you want about this couple but Lindsay has really done right by David. Excellent job all season.

His bum wasn’t that bad, Len. Len is going low to make sure he doesn’t take it. Jules plugs the tour – go girl.

I feel like that was underscored by a point or two. But David wins just by being there this week.

Yeah, they don’t put a mic on her ankle so the sound guys gave the a bit of help.

Are we doing to Quickstep at some point?  Oh….wrong foot on that run dearie. Dang…missed another step in the middle. I think Val might have over reached on this one a bit – way too hectic and crazy.

When you have training you are consistent. No improvement from Jules, and she notes lack of body content.  Bruno will give her a 10, of course. CAI? Of course she raves.  Spare me. Len is siding with Julianne. And with me. 😉  And Val opens his mouth again.

I probably would have given one less 10.

The next dance will tell a story…the scores, that is.

God, this edit will piss me off if he doesn’t win. Fucking editors.  Rashad – kill this.

That may have been the hottest V. Waltz I’ve ever seen. Like, legit hot, not faux hot. Wow. That was lovely. And he LEADS!

Judges are being kind. He must be doing well in the votes. They’d be tearing him down if he had no shot. Remember, they like to be right. Must be close between him and Normani.

Side note: love Jules dress. Saw it back stages and it’s short and feathery.

So, perfect score for Rashad – putting him 3 points ahead of Normani at this point. I’m almost afraid to hope.

Gotta give it up for Lindsay for choreographing a brilliant freestyle – perfectly tailored to her partner. Only part I didn’t like was the big trick she did with David no where in site. The rest of it? Brilliant. The staging on the dugout, everything. He had a mis-step right at the very beginning but give the man 9s and 10s.

Perfect score for David. I’m trying to find my spreadsheet to see how far down he is.

Man, why does Val have to use my favorite little dancer??

I love JT. Sooo cute. 🙂  High kick.

Of course Val can’t do a freestyle so he does contemporary V. Waltz.  High kick #2.

That was it? It was pretty….but it didn’t really move me like I would want.

Judges drooling…same story different day. I wonder if Normani is winning by so much they felt comfortable scoring her down so that we can’t cry about manipulation.  But then I think I’m giving the producer too much machiavellian credit. And we can still complain about manipulation. 😉

Oh Emma – you won’t let him down. You’ve been awesome this season! Kill it!!

Holy crap!! Now that’s how you do a freestyle!! I’m tired just watching it.

Just realized I never closed this one out. We’ ll have a new post tomorrow night for the show, PLUS Courtney should be posting her power rankings shortly…and look for Dancing by the Numbers tomorrow afternoon!!

Dancing With The Stars Season 24, Week 9 – Dancing by the Numbers!

Let’s all cheer for being at the finale of what has been an extremely annoying season of DWTS. Almost enough to make one vow to not watch anymore. And if not for the blogging, I wouldn’t be watching the show any more. But someone has to point out all the BS and I guess that’s our job.

Note that I’m traveling on both Monday and Tuesday so I’m not entirely sure that I will have the time to do a final DBTN that I usually do between Monday night and Tuesday night. Hopefully I will be able to – we’ll see.

Now, on to this past week. What happened? I don’t remember. :::yawn::: The only thing I really remember is the judges acting all shocked when Simone was eliminated. Give me a BREAK! If you were really surprised by Simone being eliminated, you don’t deserve to be a judge on this show that’s been around for 24 seasons now. I can’t believe….refuse to believe…that the judges think they can nitpick someone to death for 9 weeks and that it doesn’t have an impact. They certainly have egos, and believe that they direct the audience – so why would they believe that their constant assault on Simone’s dancing had no direct influence on the voting? The girl is an OLYMPIC gymnast and probably has had the toughest judging and criticism throughout her young life that one can imagine – yet she was brought to tears by these erratic, often mean-spirited, judges.  Read more..

USA Today Previews The Finals Of Dancing With The Stars Season 24 – Odds, Strengths, Sparkle Winner

USA Today has written on their odds and strengths for the finals of Dancing With The Stars Season 24. They’ve also written on their best dances. However, their “sparkle winner” of the season is Simone Biles and Sasha Farber.

Sparkle Points
After assessing a season full of absurd outfits and gimmicks, there can only be one overall USA TODAY Sparkle Points winner. Awarded for bright colors, excessive bedazzling, fringe, staples (i.e. blazers or shoes) made unnecessarily gaudy, and tear-away items, Sparkle Points are arguably as valuable as any mirrorball trophy.

Appearing on the USA TODAY Sparkle Points podium more often than not, Simone Biles takes the top spot. No stranger to a presentation, Simone’s wardrobe and style encompassed every absurd DWTS stereotype there is: ruffles, warrior-wear, bedazzled bustiers. Simone may have been torn from the top three one week too soon, but no mirror ball out there shines as brightly.

More at USA Today. Let us know if you agree or disagree. I wouldn’t count anyone out, but, my bet is full on for Rashad and Emma for the win.

DWTS Season 24 Rehearsal Photos For The Finale, David Ross On Why He Did The Show And More

Check out the Chicago Sun Times when you can. They have some photos of the finalists of Dancing With The Stars Season 24 rehearsing for the Finals. They all look amazing.

Also, The Wrap talked with David Ross about his new gig as an ESPN analyst. They also talked on Dancing With The Stars and the finale…

“Every time I step on the dance floor, I feel like I am skydiving and free falling — I feel like I am going to crap my pants every time,” he revealed.

While he’s nervous about this Monday night’s glittering finale, Ross compared the anxiety to a baseball game: “Once the first batter comes out, you are in your comfort zone and forget everything else.”

That laser-sharp focus was one of the keys to the Cubs beating the Cleveland Indians to win the World Series last year. “I don’t think we ever looked up, we stayed in our cocoon of our clubhouse. We never got caught up on the outside world,” the baseball champ said of the team.

As for why sports stars seem to excel so often on “DWTS,” Ross believes it’s because they are “trained to jump into things with both feet.”

“I think athletes are trained to invest all of themselves naturally, you know you have to commit 110 percent. We have to control our work ethic and performance, as that’s all we can control,” he said.

“I did the show to try something new and get out of my box — and show my kids its OK to fail at something.”

Here’s to David and more at The Wrap.

Simone Biles And Sasha Farber Look Back On Their Season Together On DWTS (New Interview)

Simone Biles And Sasha Farber look back on their season together on Dancing With The Stars with US Weekly. They talked on what they learned and what their future plans are too. Great interview. They will remain unforgettable in my heart.

Us: How did you take the judges’ criticism and learn from their tips?

SB: It’s hard to hear. But we always tried to go back into practice and really work on what they’ve told us.

SF: Seeing this little girl heartbroken was the hardest part. The only thing that I could do was pick up the pieces, stick them together and make sure she remembered why she’s doing this. I reminded her this is a reality show and you’ve got to have fun.

Us: When did you see yourself getting the most frustrated?

SB: I hated the first day when we learned a new dance. That’s just horrible. You feel like you’re getting nowhere!

SF: It’s a new concept, a new story. We didn’t have time to dwell on the happiness. We went into the next thing.

Us: Simone, have you seen your body evolve since you started dancing?

SB: It looks different than my gymnastics body because I haven’t been working out. Dance helps keep me in shape, but I’ve lost my six-pack. I’m not as toned. I think I just lost a little muscle definition.

Us: Best part about taking time off from gymnastics?

SB: My life is just a little more freeing. I’ve gone indoor skydiving, cliff jumping and horseback riding. I’m eating whatever I want!

Us: How important was it for you to add a mirrorball to your trophy case?

SF: It would have been a huge deal! I really wanted Simone to take that mirrorball trophy home and put it up there with her medals. At the same time, I wanted her to enjoy this experience.

SB: I just wanted to learn more about myself through this competition. If I won, it’s cool. But if I didn’t, there’s still so much I can take away.

Us: Simone, what has this experience taught you about yourself?

SB: That I need to speak up more and that I can be hard on myself. I’m more confident in the gym because I’m in my element. I’m trying to find that same confidence outside.

Us: What’s your post-DWTS plan?

SB: I’m going to take some time off and just relax. I’m going on two vacations, so I’m excited.

SF: I need to plan a wedding. We don’t have a date, but we do have a destination: either England, Australia or America. That’s a start, right?

More at US Weekly.

ETA: Here is Sasha and Simone on Kelly & Ryan today. They perform too….
