DWTS18 Week 4 Post Media And Interviews Part 1, Switch Up Dance Poll (VOTE)
What another great night of dancing! I really liked the opening number and Derek Hough and the Macy’s Stars Of Dance performance. HOT! Also, all the couples did much better than I thought they would with the Switch Up dances too. Though, please….no more Switch Up dances in the future as I think the cast had enough pressure as it is. Why put that kind of pressure on them…and US? 😯 What do you think? Vote in our new Poll and then see some media afterwards.
So, for new media and interviews after the show, how about if we start with ABC7 with George Pennacchio!! Also, On The Red Carpet has one interview posted with Meryl and Val (seen below). Val is happy with last night and the way it went down with an exception that he wasn’t happy with the judges scores and comments for Maks and Charlie. He’s also not looking forward to Disney week while Meryl feels the opposite…
Be sure to keep checking back to this link for more interviews to be added through out the day. You can also view some high quality photos of the night at On The Red Carpet.
And for those needing a repeat of the scores….
NeNe Leakes & Derek Hough: 32
Charlie White & Peta Murgatroyd: 33
Meryl Davis & Val Chmerkovskiy: 39
James Maslow & Cheryl Burke: 35
Amy Purdy & Mark Ballas: 34
Drew Carey & Witney Carson: 33
Cody Simpson & Sharna Burgess: 31
Candace Cameron Bure & Tony Dovolani: 28
Danica McKellar & Maksim Chmerkovskiy: 32
Stay tuned. More coming!! 😉
ETA: Below is some after dark coverage with PopTVDotCom…
ETA2: The On The Red Carpet Interviews are now up! Be sure to see them here. Lots of Disney talk! ADDING: Drew says he has the Quickstep. Cody says he is doing something to “Lion King”(Court knows more. Stay tuned). Sharna says she and Charlie have the Jazz. Candace hints that she is doing to something to “Little Mermaid”. Tony is going to be a “dog”.
ETA3: The Afterbuzz interviews are starting to be released. See them at this link. It’s good to see Rubio again.

ETA5: E Online has some interviews from last night as well.
ETA6: Below is Extra with some interviews…
I voted “Maybe” on the poll just because I didn’t dislike the Switch Up and I did like most of the couples that were paired together. However, if they do this again in the future I would prefer to NOT BE LIED TO. (but c’mon CC… when do they NOT lie? ;))
I voted NO for the simple fact that tptb can botch up what was originally a fun idea. I do not like how they carried out the switch-up voting. Thanks to the celebs & pros the show last night was not a train-wreck.
Allow me to be the first on this thread to say that ERIN HAS GOT TO GO!!! She was beyond awful last night, so inappropriate, such bad, bad questions, like a rabid 14 year old shipper. The woman has no judgment whatsoever. I’m developing a Pavlovian response of cringing whenever she appears on screen with a microphone. Terrible, terrible, terrible.
Susan, I second that vote. Erin needs some etiquette training. When she speaks, I cringe. She is ruining the show. Her comments were embarrassing last night, not only to the celebreties but to the viewers also. Erin needs to go now.
All the BS aside, I appreciate so much the dance that Val gave Meryl last night. I feel like he really proved himself as a pro and a teacher. It definitely deserved the scores it got.
I voted Maybe. I like the idea of switch (for one week only) but I believe next time it needs to be better executed.
No, not with the way it was carried out and manipulated because a certain Pro didn’t like the partner he was originally given.
Val saying he was more of a political science/newspaper kind of guy since he was 10 years old, no shit! I’m pretty impressed with his level of self awareness re his earnestness.
I might die if NeNe really is doing “Cruella De Vil” as her song 😛 There’s only a few Disney movies where dogs are prominent characters…101 Dalmations being the most prominent…;-) And no, that wasn’t a spoiler. I honestly don’t know what song NeNe has…yet.
I’d give more info on Cody’s dance, but we’re saving that for “Who’s Dancing What?”.
Judging from my analysis of Disney songs yesterday (song wish list post coming later!), it seems like a lot of them are conducive to quickstep and samba…so I’m thinking we might see quite a few of those next week.
Court, I am so excited for Disney week! I am just expecting a pantheon of the songs that we all grew up listening to! I’m hoping we don’t get all modern songs or all classic songs – having First Time in Forever and So This Is Love in the same show would be so fun!
I voted no BECAUSE they lied about it … how can we trust ever trust them now? If they do the Switch-Up again, just get rid of the charade and don’t bother asking us to choose when they have no intention of using viewer votes as a guide!!!
PS: I’m with Susan … ERIN HAS TO GO!!!
She was awful!!!! I vote mid-show replacement!!!!
I know that probably won’t happen, but I sure hope TPTB do so before #19!!!
A strong NO from me with this Switchup experiment that has failed miserably. Lest this experiment is tried again with computerized random selection, expect the Switchup to fail for version 19.0 & beyond of Dancing with the Stars. Stronger judging (lower scores) is required.
Count me among the few, but I actually really liked the Switch-Up. I could have done without the trickery and deceit from TPTB, but in the end, I was really happy with Derek and Nene, and most of the other pairings. In some ways, his talent and skill in presenting his partner shines more, when he has a partner with less experience. I thought the dance with Nene was perfect for her, and they both danced the heck out of it.
Actually, I thought that the Switch-Up showed most of the pros in a fairly flattering light — except Maks (more on that later). Tony as the nurturing teacher he is (though maybe not as good at packaging the star for the audience), Whitney and Cheryl able to get great performances out of their stars, and Val’s amazing work with Meryl. I thought it also showed the limits of some contestants — Cody’s lack of investment in learning to dance ballroom even with Sharna cracking the whip, and the genuine challenges that exist in choreographing for Amy (that Derek manages without anyone even noticing), that might have been blamed on the pros without the switch. And, it adds excitement to a part of the season that can get a bit monotonous. I liked it better than many of the other theme weeks.
The two outliers are Peta/Charlie and Maks/Danica. While I thought Charlie did a great job with what was given, he can dance, and Peta should have tried to do some of the basic rhumba hip action with him. She seems to try to work with what the star can already do, rather than push them to fit into the ballroom syllabus (compare her with Sharna who would have been cracking the whip), and that ended up hurting them. I would have loved to see Charlie take on the rhumba characteristics, so I felt cheated when it wasn’t there. I know it’s always a balance of using what skills they have and teaching new ones, but he could have done a lot more. I don’t blame Peta per se, I mean she put together a memorable routine, but it was just a risk that didn’t pan out with Charlie — and it would have with James or a lesser dancer.
Similarly, Maks and Danica were just a mess — music snafu to be sure, but the whole routine was just manic and lacked content, which is absurd given how good Danica already is. Why Maks didn’t give her the type of routine he had for Misty (that Edyta did in the end), I’ll never know. Maybe because he couldn’t teach her? I’ll throw this out there — I think Maks is a good performer, but he lacks the patience to teach in the DWTS context — he really needs a pro partner (Meryl) rather than a student. Julianne could have said her piece in a better way (and should have), but she wasn’t wrong — and, besides, do we really think Maks would have been anti-Switch if he’d been paired with Nene to start with?

Don’t really need to see the switchup again. Which is not to say that I didn’t find it interesting–this time.
Considering how the bunch that runs this show are such liars can’t really trust them even with a great idea, I think last night went off pretty well considering but the BIG lie soured it somewhat for me and right before Meryl’s dance with Val and Tom saying Val got the most votes for that pairing just set me off again. Not only the the lie but also the insinuation, I guess, that Derek got the least votes of all the pros. Just too much disrespect TPTB not just for Derek but for treating viewers like a bunch of idiots.
Great post AR #14. I agree!
Didn’t Maks originally GET paired with NeNe and throw a fit about it?, hence the reason he got swiched to getting Danica? Kristyn Burtt tweeted this on 4/2–” One celeb knew who they had and then was switched….so…um…weird.” Then she later tweeted that reasoning for producers tinkering with the Switch-Ups had nothing to do with scheduling..like Derek having Make Your Move interviews which were done via satellite.
I can’t answer that. 🙂
If they do this again…. And they most likely will even though most of the cast and the viewers thought it a bad idea, they will consider it a success and “let’s do it again!”… They need to figure out how it will work BEFORE announcing it, and make sure if it is audience voting, they are 1000000% clear on it so there aren’t snafus and they can’t change results part way through to suit their needs.
Yes- as long as the producers don’t control it, and we the viewers do!
Wait so Maks threw a fit to get someone other than Nene and then didn’t give her (Danica) a good number? Ugh!
I somehow missed that about Maks too. It doesn’t surprise me. I feel bad for Tony, because when is he going to realize that while he might work with the bros he is not apart of the fam. He seems to show them deference and they don’t return the favor. Wise up Tony. You are playing for the wrong team. They threw your partner under the bus. And Derek, who has many reasons to not like you, was kind to NeNe. Remember when Derek won with Kelly folks and the look on Tony’s face when it wasn’t Val and Zendaya that won. And I get it that Derek did that for NeNe, but sheesh why don’t people wise up. I just don’t get it.
It is interesting how everyone can see things so differently, but seem so sure that what they think is right. My personal opinion is that I wouldn’t blame anyone for not wanting to dance with NeNe (that’s just me). I hate rumors though and we do not know if it is true that Maks threw a fit about dancing with her. I did not like Derek’s dance with her at all. I love Maks and think it is about time he has been put with someone who actually has a chance of winning. It has always been obvious to me that Derek and Mark have been favored on this show. I am a fan of Derek (just not as much as Maks or Val). Maybe because he seems like such a kid and I am much older. I thought Julianne was very rude and it was not necessary. I have always been a huge fan or hers and planned to get tickets, if possible, for the tour she and Derek are going on — not now. And, by the way, I definitely think Tony is playing for the RIGHT team!
If that is true about Maks… that’s just plain nasty. I don’t like Nene, however one doesn’t have to be so obvious with their disdain. Would that 1 week have truly ruined his reputation. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, this was the rumor all last week.
Well, I didn’t watch last night. I really *did* do “date night” with the hubby, and it was fantastic! Loved the chicken picatta. 😀
But I did browse around and watch some numbers on You Tube. The best thing for me about switcheroo night? I’m now a totally devoted Sharna fan, because she FINALLY made Cody pull his damn pants up!!! All I thought of watching Cody until this week was “M.C. Hammer called, he wants his pants back.”
I’m surprised (but not surprised) to even hear a rumor about Maks pitching a hissy-fit over Nene. Sounds like Captain Narcissus strikes yet again. 🙁 I can only hope that Karma comes calling quickly…
Something to Lion King? Hmmm… Circle of Life? A Paso Doble to “Be Prepared”?(love that song) And is Candace going to be my darling who does a Samba to “Under the Sea”? 😀 I have absolutely no doubt thay by Charlie having Jazz he is going to get right back up to the top of the leaderboard. I must say though… Kinda wish they would do the whole “If you did Contemporary you don’t do Jazz and vice versa” like on season 16. I do, however, think Sharna’s Jazz routine is gonna be EPIC if it anything like the one with Andy Dick (still one of my favorite routines EVER on DWTS)
OK. Lion King, Little Mermaid, Dogs, this is amazing. I am so freaking excited. I am such a kid at heart!!! I just want to see as much Disney as I can. Cidra… this will be the best week for me! Such a great week! YAY KIDS AT HEART!
No to the switch. The in-your-face manipulation was insulting and I felt uncomfortable watching the pros cheer for their own partners while their switch partners looked on. It may not have bothered them, but it bothered me.
Just taking a guess on the songs and movies for the couples:
Candace & Mark – Samba – “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid
Cody & Witney – Samba – “I just can’t wait to be king” for The Lion King.
Nene & Tony don’t know the dance or song but probably something from the Lady and the Tramp.
I’m PRAYING that Amy & Derek are dancing the Waltz to Beauty and the Beast! I’m ready to see Amy dance a ballroom.
Oh please. That old fodder that Derek and mark have been favored. If you look at all their partners realistically Maks has been given plenty of great partners. He just can’t close the deal. I don’t think he will this season either 🙂
Tony thinks the judges are harder on his partners than anyone else’s? Have you *heard* what they’ve said to Derek???
Maks said that he and Meryl were going on all cylinders – if their earlier performances were all cylinders, then they’re not going to win…
There were a few other comments from both Val and Maks that were a little “what??” – but I’ve managed to erase them from my memory…
Mods, was the whole switch up changed because Derek couldn’t go to Florida? Is that what started the whole mess of changes? Just wondered what, if anything particular, started the twitter vote being disregarded. Not sure if you guys even know exactly but was it completely premeditated or because tptb knew one pro couldn’t partner the person twitter voters put them with so took advantage of that to change it to what they thought would get better ratings or whatever. Great work btw!!
Judy, I heard on Afterbuzz that Derek was never going to be able to dance with Meryl. So that caused the cascade of changes that we saw.
Having said that, I think that the concept of the switch was a great one, but the execution was horrible. I personal didn’t tweet, so I don’t really care so much about the voting, but I do wish that the producers had been more honest. So it’s a maybe for me.
Adam, if Amy and Derek danced a Waltz as Belle and Beast I would just lay down and die. Just put me in pine box and throw me into the ground die.
Belle and Beast are my favorite Disney love story. Amy even looks a bit like Belle!
I do hope they dance either a Viennese or a Slow Waltz. I’m curious to see how Team Derek/Amy find a way to get the grand sweeping and rise and fall motion of a waltz with her prosthetics. They’ve done things I never dreamed they could do so I have high hopes for any of the Standard dances that they get.
@Judy – Nothing has been confirmed, and we may never know the truth – right now, we can only speculate. Some are saying it was because he couldn’t travel, others are saying that it was because it would be “unfair” for him to partner Meryl, others refuse to believe he even won Meryl in the first place (mainly the Maks/Val fans). At this point, I’m just kind of over the switch – I just want to move on to Disney week.
The switch-up is a good idea in theory but was executed terribly and I think both the pros and celebs were uncomfortable most of the night.
So we have Meryl doing a Samba (per Afterbuzz), Charlie doing Jazz, Drew doing Quickstep, and James doing Contemporary (per his twitter). Do we have any other confirmed dances so far? I’m going to assume Danica has quickstep only because she hasn’t had a dance in hold since week 1. I’m going to guess Samba for Cody. Other than that not sure.
[…] you didn’t catch it yesterday, some of the couples revealed some clues about their dances in this media post Vogue posted yesterday. Some other clues, which I revealed on Twitter yesterday? Both Meryl & Charlie have eschewed […]
@Court – so no part V handing TPTB their heads on a platter? Darn.
@ButterflyWhirl – *shrug* I might, but at this point, I just kind of want to put the whole thing to bed. It’s just been exhausting and disappointing and even though I’d love to expose TPTB for the lying SOB’s that they truly are, I’d rather throw myself headlong into something positive (Disney week) instead of dwelling on the negative (switch week). You might be able to persuade Heidi to do it, though 🙂
They, and others, will try to use that excuse, Judy…but all of Derek’s promos were via remote. He could have done them anywhere. Let’s just say we’ve heard enough things to know there was a whole lot of tinkering going on. Why? Cuz they wanted drama, probably.
Heidi, I hope you are right. Maks did say it was his show. Reminds me so much of Zendaya/Val. I will always believe everything possible was done to give Val the win that season and this season for Maks appears to be the same.
I would assume that Derek probably had to stick around town because of his epic Macy’s dance not because of the movie promo which was just as well because there would’ve been tremendous backlash against a Derek Meryl partnership.
I am hoping for their partnering during the finale or maybe bothe charlie and Meryl can dance with Derek and Julianne on their tour!
