PureDWTS Season 28: Bobby Bones Weighs in on Sharna & Artem’s Dismissal and Sean Spicer, Talks to Lauren Alaina About Her Partner

So…I was at odds with this one, because while I think none of us really want to hear any more of Bobby’s thoughts on DWTS, a lot of people are still wrestling with the question of why Artem & Sharna were let go.  But for once (and I can’t believe I’m saying this), Bobby made some good points on his podcast yesterday about their dismissal, as well as Sean Spicer’s participation.  Bobby’s commentary on the whole situation starts at the 88:43 mark and ends at the 92:52 mark, if you want to listen for yourself; I’ve taken the liberty of transcribing below (pain in the ass, but I know some of you won’t bother listening and will just start going off in the comments regardless – so at least do me the favor of reading this):

Bobby: Let me say this.  You know they announced the Dancing with the Stars cast yesterday, and then it came out that Sharna, my partner from last season, is not returning to Dancing with the Stars. She is not the only one – they didn’t bring back Artem on the guys’ side, so it wasn’t just a Sharna thing. But I can tell you that I reached out to her before they announced and was like “Hey what’s up? Who’s your partner?” and she was like “I don’t know yet!”

Amy: Oh.

Bobby: And this was like two or three days BEFORE the announce.  And I was like “oh, cool” because she had just been on a trip and she came back and I was like “Oh cool, let me know!” When you see who you get, y’know. So a few days before, she didn’t know she wasn’t gonna be on the show. I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn here – I hope not! Uh, so, then she found and texted me and was like “Oh, I didn’t know…this is crazy! I had no idea.”

Amy: Whaaaat?! Wow, I mean, because she’s been on, like-

Bobby: She’s been on for 11 seasons, 12 seasons, yeah. So she wrote [he goes on to read a passage from Sharna’s farewell IG post]. A lot of these sites have now coupled me with the story, going “well this is why, controversial winner!”

Lunchbox: *chuckles* I saw that, yeah.

Bobby: Which it’s not – cause why would Artem not come back, either?

Lunchbox: Right, had nothing to do with you.

Bobby: I would have loved if it had everything to do with me, don’t think that I wouldn’t think that was great – not because of her, but that we just broke the system so much that they’re having to- that’s not the case. Ummm…so…Sharna’s awesome, I talked to her before, I talked to her right after, she’s like “You’re not gonna believe it.  I can’t believe it!” So she’s not back.  I don’t really know WHY…I’m not sure. I have great relationships with everybody – all that crew on DWTS, obviously with Sharna, so I don’t know what the deal is with her. So…I did see on Instagram that she wrote that…

Amy: That’s a bummer.  It’d be different if she was a part of the decision, like “Y’know what, I’m just not gonna do it this year”, but she was just as shocked…

Bobby: I talked to Lauren Alaina last night for a long time, cause she’s doing it. We put a dancing picture on my Instastory, of us dancing…she hasn’t started practicing yet. She’s still in that phase of “this is gonna be so fun!”

Amy: *chuckles* Wait till it rules your life!

Bobby: But I was like “Hey, you’re gonna have some real issues of inadequacy with this. Cause you’re gonna go and you’re just not gonna be able to get it and you’re gonna go ‘oh well I’m the worst’ and it’s gonna bubble into your life and you’ll go ‘well I’m just not good at anything’ and when that happens – CALL ME. Whatever time it is – cause I struggled from that. 2 or 3 days of doing 8, 9 hours a day, like I couldn’t get it, and I was like ‘I’m just sad’, cause I’m not smart enough to get what I see people doing all around me. If that happens, CALL ME. Cause wherever you are, I was there, PLUS.”  Cause I had never danced! She called the postshow/preshow yesterday, she called me right after she got on Good Morning America, this is a call from Lauren Alaina yesterday…

[goes to recorded call between Lauren and Bobby]

Bobby: Have you started practicing dancing?

Lauren: NO!

Bobby: No practice yet???

Lauren: No! NONE!

Bobby: And have you announced your partner?

Lauren: I haven’t even met my partner! I don’t know who it is!

Bobby: Wait, they were up there, though, today…

Lauren: The people were there, but they didn’t tell us who our partners were.

Bobby: You follow someone, one of the pros on your Instagram already, that’s not your partner???

Lauren: No I followed him because I sang for him last year.

Bobby: I thought that too, but all the conspiracy websites are saying that Alan is your partner.

Lauren: But, I would be HAPPY if he was, I love him.

[call ends]

Bobby: I talked to her last night, she was like “They said I’m gonna have a good one, but I don’t know who it is!” She still doesn’t know. So, I’m excited for the season, I plan on going for the premiere, I saw that there was some drama because they put Sean Spicer on there, people upset about that. Y’know, I probably would have stayed away from putting anyone political on there, too…there’s a reason why you don’t wanna come on the show and not talk about politics. There’s certain places people go for politics, there’s certain places people don’t – THIS definitely isn’t! He won’t last long, anyway – physically, I don’t think he can handle it. So, yeah…that’s the deal. Pretty good cast, pretty excited about that, my thing on Sharna was I didn’t know, she didn’t know, and then I saw her post yesterday after she had told me that she was kinda upset about not being able to be able to go back.  She may go back another time, I don’t know…but there you go.  Everybody’s asking me to say something about it, so I said it – I didn’t know, she didn’t know. Alright, cool…

So, some immediate takeaways: the celebs have NOT met their pro partners yet (and vice-versa), so it’s possible they don’t know who they’re with yet. Also clear that Sharna was as caught off-guard about the whole thing as Artem was, and was gobsmacked to find out she wasn’t coming back this season. Bobby also appears to still be a bit of a vainglorious little shit, who likes to think his win “broke the system”. *Sigh* However – he does echo what we’ve all been saying about Spicer’s casting, so he gets minor brownie points from me…you know this show is in deep sh*t when even the most controversial winner ever says “Oof, shouldn’t have cast Spicer, guys.”

Someone also sent me the clip below (can’t figure out if this is from the same episode or a different one), where Bobby makes some good points about how cutting Artem loose was a bad decision…

I’m also being told that Artem is set to appear on the Bella’s podcast this coming Wednesday, so we’ll likely get more of his side of the story as well…stay tuned.

Many of you have asked me for my own thoughts on why Sharna & Artem were let go…and to be honest, I’ve remained quiet, simply because I’m just as stumped as you guys. I guess I can maybe kinda see why Sharna might have been the sacrificial lamb – she could have been removed so as to not remind viewers of the dumpster fire of last season, or maybe the fact that she’s been an outspoken critic of the show in the past could have benched her; compared to media darlings like Witney, Lindsay, Emma, & Jenna, she hasn’t been afraid to speak her mind about the show in the past (note that the last time we had an outspoken female pro who criticized the show in the press, it was Lacey – and her appearances on the show dwindled pretty quickly after that). Is Sharna wrong for speaking her mind? Not always – but from a PR point of view, she may be more of a risk than the new management is willing to take. Plus she no longer has her “It’s Sharna’s turn to win!” plot armor to protect her spot on the show anymore. My only other thought about why Sharna and Artem may have been let go is due to other projects they had going on – perhaps Artem’s participation in Total Bellas or Sharna’s gig as a judge on DWTSAu gave the (incorrect) impression that their hearts weren’t 100% in the DWTS game anymore…? I’m really just spitballing, guys – it makes no sense to me, it makes no sense to you, hell – it makes no sense to Sharna and Artem.

Thoughts?

PureDWTS Season 28 Cast Rumors & Watchout: Bobby Bones Claims “a Friend” is Part of The Cast

Several of you have reached out about this one, and I held off on posting because I couldn’t find the exact episode where he allegedly said this – until now. As a side note: if you are reaching out to me here/on Twitter/on Instagram/etc. to tell me about something interesting/weird/suspicious that you read/saw/heard with regards to the show, PLEASE – send me a link/screen shot. “I read this article but I can’t remember where but it basically said XYZ, I think” doesn’t really help me – while I appreciate your effort and probably 2/3 of the time your instincts are spot-on, sometimes I would prefer to see the proof myself before drawing any worthwhile conclusions…and I don’t always have time to go digging.  Your cooperation moving forward is appreciated 😉

Anywho…

Our *wince* reigning season 27 champion, one Mr. Bobby Bones, was doing his usual radio show last Wednesday and someone mentioned the hat he was wearing, which incidentally was sent to him by Sharna…which started Bobby down an interesting path about the upcoming season of DWTS. The talk about the show starts around the 6:50 mark, if you want to listen to it yourself; however, I’ve transcribed it below to save some time, paraphrasing where necessary…

Bobby: Ummm ok, a lot of people asking where I got my hat. It’s Woody from Toy Story. Sharna mailed me this. She was like “Saw it, thought I’d mail it to you.” Which, by the way, let me say this: Sharna, who was my partner from Dancing with the Stars, ummm…we’re engaged! Wouldn’t that be funny if I just dropped that on you guys???

*polite laughter from his cohosts*

Male cohost: And none of us knew? Hehe.

Bobby: Ummm…the show starts back, they start training again I think in September? Cause the show is September 16, that’s the day it comes back. So they start in like, late August/September, and…I’m torn, because…if you know, Amy, don’t say…but one of my friends is doing the show…

Amy: Mmmm, yeah.

Bobby: …and then, this friend will not be dancing with Sharna, so I’ve got two people on the show, so I guess I just support them both…but…

Amy: Yeah, support both!

Bobby: WHERE DOES MY LOYALTY FALL??? Friend A or Sharna, Amy??? Cause I helped Friend A get on the show…

Amy: I think you can root for both until one of them-

Bobby: Oof, I’m not someone that has two favorite teams. Only Arkansas Razorbacks or Chicago Cubs.

Amy: Well that’s hard…ugh…I don’t know.  Good luck with that, I don’t wanna help you.

The conversation then segues into the cohosts asking if DWTS has “asked Bobby back” (ummm, for what???) and then some nonsense about a parody of “Old Town Road” that Lil Nas X told them to stop playing, blah blah blah…

So, let’s unpack what we just heard. Given Bobby’s penchant for hyperbole last season (“My schedule is so ridiculous, more busy than anyone else in the cast!”, “Everyone hates me because I won!”, “I’m the people’s champion, you all chose me!!!”), my first thought was “How close is this ‘friend’ of Bobby’s?” It’s entirely possible, at least in my mind, that this “friend” may be more of an acquaintance – someone that Bobby may run into at events a few times a year, but isn’t on a “come hang out at my house in the Hamptons for the weekend”-basis with.  Or he could genuinely be friends with this person…so that makes it harder to pin down who it could be, because it seems to widen the pool…

Then Bobby mentions that this friend “Will not be dancing with Sharna.” Ok, I may not be completely plugged back in with the show again just yet, but I know from a reliable source that none of the pros have met their partners yet – none of the pros have even gotten hints about their partners yet, and they aren’t likely to for another 2-3 weeks. So the only way Bobby could possibly know without a doubt that his friend was not dancing with Sharna was if his friend was female or a drag queen…and I don’t get the feeling that Bobby hangs out with a ton of drag queens.

Bobby then claims he “helped this friend get on the show”.  Again, with regards to Bobby’s penchant for hyperbole and occasionally borderline-delusional sense of self-importance, unless this friend is kind of a nobody (which makes me wonder why they would even cast her), I have a hard time believing that Bobby going to bat for this individual somehow helped them get signed on to the show. Could Bobby possibly mean the reverse – he helped the show book this friend? That this friend is maybe a bigger name, and Bobby may have made the introduction between the friend and the show?

Thanks to @fisharnolds on Twitter, we may have our first good theory…country singer Maren Morris, who also happened to be the guest on that same episode of the Bobby Bones show and is apparently tight with Bobby.

Maren is also on tour this fall, but coincidentally, none of her tour dates fall on Mondays…hmmm. I will add this, though: I used to work with a guy that was a roadie for several alternative bands back in the late 90s/early 2000s, and he always said that a lot of tours are “dark” (no shows) on Mondays and/or Tuesdays because a) ticket sales are usually poorest for dates on those two days of the week, and b) it gives the tour a longer window to make it to the next set of stops, which may require more than a day’s drive to reach, and it also gives the band and crew a break. Not saying that it means Maren’s not doing DWTS, just that it could be another reasonable explanation for the Monday night gaps in her tour schedule…hedging all bets here, guys 😉

My thoughts? If they did manage to get Maren, who is what I would consider a pretty big, “current” star (thought maybe not A-list), then maybe they really are putting their money where their mouth is and are going after bigger celebs with more pull. I was weary when someone told me that “a friend of Bobby’s” would be doing the show, but I guess a current country star isn’t so bad – as long as she isn’t going rogue with the floss dance or constantly reminding us that she’s “from a small town of 800 people”…*eye roll*

Thoughts about “Bobby’s friend” that’s allegedly doing the show?

PureDWTS Season 28: What The Show Needs to Do to “Fix” Itself

After an 8 month hiatus (the longest in the history of the US version of the show), the next season of DWTS is upon us! Admittedly, I enjoyed the break – aside from the reprieve it gave me in my already-busy work/school schedule (I graduate in October with a bachelor of science in social media marketing…does this officially make me an expert blogger now? 🙂 ), it gave me time to ruminate on just how season 27 went so far off the rails, and what needs to be done to get DWTS back on track.

One opinion I heard quite a bit in the off-season? “Bobby is the reason why season 27 sucked!” While I agree that Bobby seemed to dry-hump my last nerve on a weekly basis last season, here’s a revelation I had…

…Bobby wasn’t the reason season 27 sucked. Bobby was simply a symptom of a much bigger problem: the show neglecting its core audience in favor of foolishly pursuing a wider, younger audience by tinkering too much with a formula that already worked pretty well on its own.

This isn’t something that happened overnight – I’d estimate it probably started about ten years ago, with season 9 (aka “the kitchen sink season with wayyyyy too many couples” – and also my first season here at Pure), and has simply gone through a cycle of snowballing and slightly receding since then. We had season 9 that threw a whopping 16 couples at us, absurd new dance styles and challenges, and the biggest ringer (Mya) and biggest ego (Donny) we had seen to date. Then we had the pared-down season 10, with only 11 couples and relatively normal dance styles.  Season 11 brought our first truly “controversial” contestant – Bristol Palin, whose continued presence (and only mediocre performance) seemed to polarize even the most laid-back fans. Season 12 was a return to form, casting-wise, but was the first time we saw the invisible ABC family hand pulling the strings to keep a Disney kid (Chelsea Kane) in the game despite them simply not having the votes. Season 13 gave us a pro shakeup, but otherwise seemed relatively tame; season 14’s agenda seemed to include making William Levy “happen”, despite being a fair-to-middling dancer that was a relative unknown to the show’s audience. Season 15 was the dumpster fire many of us recall as the All-Star season; season 16, aside from its unexpected outcome, was also fairly tame in the grand scheme of things.  So was season 17, which ended up being a pleasant surprise despite a cast that seemed pretty ho-hum initially. Season 18 saw the Meryl & Maks PR machine; season 19 gifted us with some great dancing and a cast that seemed to get along really, really well. Season 20 was “Val’s Rumer’s season” from the jump, and seemed to get extra nasty with the ringer finger-pointing. Season 21, aside from some shady partner-shuffling and Tamar being…well, Tamar, was relatively uneventful. Season 22 had a great cast, aside from there simply being too much competition; season 23 saw the rise of a previously-unknown-but-later-much-beloved star (Hinch), only to get felled in the end by a contestant that had been rather inconsistent throughout the season and conveniently was going on tour (Laurie). Season 24, which I like to refer to as “chock full o’ ringers”, was a good season, aside from being a bit of a thought experiment on what happens when you throw an ungodly number of female ringers in with a bunch of men that have absolutely no dance experience; season 25 was the last season I remember that was good on the whole, with great dancing and a generally quite likeable cast. And then the hammer dropped: ABC made the dumbfounding decision to pick up the defunct American Idol, hire Katy Perry to judge, and then fall all over themselves to cater to her demand for a whopping $25 million salary…and things start to get dicey REAL quick…

…2018 rolls around, and we’re told that we’re getting a paltry 3-week spring season of the show with just athletes, and it ends up being a pretty predictable (and snoozeworthy) endeavor. We’re treated to the delightfully un-manipulated DWTS Juniors airing concurrent with the fall season which is…a dumpster fire of epic proportions. Terrible dancers with obnoxious personalities defy logic with their staying power (Joe & Bobby), one ringer (Tinashe) quickly gets eliminated while production struggles to keep the other ringer (Alexis) in the game with a schlocky and painfully-forced showmance with her partner. The one really good male celebrity (Juan Pablo) is unsettlingly “juan-note” and just seems to do the same routine each week, and the full package of skill, personality, and fanbase (DeMarcus) gets injured and never quite gets his mojo back. By the time Bobby got his trophy, the wheels had completely fallen off season 27.

When you take season 27 in the bigger context of what has been happening on the show the past ten years, it’s easier to see what went so horribly wrong: the show was likely going through its usual “make a stupid change, regret it, change it back the next season” cycle, and the arrival of the albatross that is American Idol simply put a brick on the accelerator: what probably would have been a relatively minor snafu turned into a flaming pile of garbage instead.

The news surrounding the new season seems to indicate that they knew they messed up with season 27, and to quote dear ol’ Tommy Bergeron “We hear you.” Do they, though? I’m seeing the same promise we hear season after season that they’re “going after bigger celebs” and “making format changes”– and I’m not sure that’s what the show needs. Hell, I’m fairly certain it’s not what the show needs – I think we need a “back to basics” season like season 10 to cleanse our palates. This show has never been about getting “big stars”; its early success was built on a bunch of has-beens and d-listers attempting to learn how to dance while giving us all a shot of nostalgia. Part of me wonders if we’ll lose a bit of the magic if they actually do manage to get a current A-lister on the show (I’m dubious that they’ll actually pull it off). As for format changes – the only changes I want to see are a return to simpler times, when they didn’t do wacky stuff like the dance-offs, immunity, live voting, etc. What I think we might end up with: a judges’ save, which doesn’t really do anything but piss off the fans.  But as is DWTS is wont to do – they will probably make some nonsensical choices and call them “improvements”, and we will probably be eye-rolling and shaking our heads once we hear about all these super-duper top secret format changes.

All complaints aside, if this 8 month hiatus has done anything, it’s given me a clearer slate and a lot more of an open mind for the season to come.  I’m willing to give it a fair shake – whether I continue to do so depends entirely upon these “changes” we’re being promised and how they manage to play out.

Thoughts? Feelings headed into the new season? I’ve got more content queued up for the coming days and weeks…stay tuned 😉

Dancing with the Stars Season 27, THE FINALE – LIVE BLOG!

Here we are at the finale already!!  If you want to see what it takes to win, and who we think will win, see Courtney’s Power Rankings and my Dancing by the Numbers posts from this past weekend.

Well, if history is any indication, it’s Evanna or Milo, eh?

VOTING IS OPEN NOW – ONLINE ONLY!!

Heh, Bruno doesn’t know where his camera is. 😀

This opening is kinda fun….taped yesterday or Saturday. Can’t remember.

Alexis up first with her Argentine Tango. Talking about something other than her showmance. Ooops. Spoke too soon. Sounded like the Bachelorette there for a moment.

I do love this music, but it’s still not great for an AT….and her feet are STILL wrong, in week 9. Other than her feet which annoy, she moves very well.

Len says congrats to all the finalists. Says Alan pulled off a terrific dance, nice lyrical feel. Says he’s concerned with the footwork (agreed). Bruno says she’s gained poise and elegance, loves the classical touches, the connection works. He felt it. Noted a little stumble on the landing, then says he didn’t see it. CAI says she’s opened up but her pointe wasn’t as strong (that’s what I was seeing).

Scores: 9, 9, 9 for a total of 27. For those keeping track, I was a point too high on my guess for her score.

Lin-Manuel Miranda in a commercial for Mary Poppins. :::swoon:::

Did you all know that Bobby has never danced before? 😀 Should probably warn the audience if you’re going to high five them. Looks dumb otherwise.

I’m sure bobby is doing a better job at this dance because the bar was so low….but it’s still so stiff in the actual dance parts. Even his hammer part is too wild.

Bruno…can’t tell if he likes it or now. I think not, because he then says he understands why he’s there at the finale. CAI says he defies the law of ballroom and latin dancing, but his hard work pays off. Blah Blah. Len says he put the ham in hammer, but he has to say that he doesn’t have the good feet, blah blah, but he makes so much fun out there than Len has so much fun.

And he gets a 24 out of 30. I think I nailed that one.

Female pros killing it – Witney, the master of the hair whip out in front.

Must we really see the retrospective?? Surely that time is used better elsewhere.

Oh god, a Bachelor dance. So Joe, Eric, Nick, Val and Wells (my favorite). Wells is dating the little girl from Modern Family, so don’t get to excited seeing her in the audience. 🙂

OMG…too much virginity talk. All the rest of it is typical Bachelor fun stuff. I should live blog my thoughts on that show if you think I can be harsh regarding this one. 🙂

Evanna up next!! If you didn’t see, check the PDH twitter feed to see a video of nearly every potter star wishing her luck only one I didn’t see was Daniel Radcliffe.

Her Halloween tango I think puts Alexis to shame. I miss the cat ears though. 🙂 She’s doing great. Not seeing any issues yet. Well done!! Yikes, a near perfect score the first time around??

CAI says congrats to Keo and says Evanna is the most improved dancer, and this dance was even better this time. Len says he gave her a challenge last time and she accomplished it. Bruno remembers the kitty ears too. Says she adds something every week.

And she gets a 30! I believe I was on target with that score as well.

The male pros without shirts! How new, exciting and different. :::yawn::: This show had more class when Derek and Mark were on it. Oh, Demarcus? Well, that helps.

Milo up next! My wine tastes…funny. Not bad. Just different. Anyway….what dance is he doing again?? Something with Robin Thicke? Okay Charleston. He’s still awesome, that hasn’t changed. Lift was a little awkward. I think live performance throws them off a bit, but that was still an excellent dance.

Len is annoyed – he has underpants older than Milo. 🙂 He didn’t like the charleston as much…last time. This time he had the Charleston swivel. Bruno says it was even more exciting and sharper than ever. Out of this world. CAI says he is ridiculously amazing, says he’s the one to beat. STFU, CAI. I don’t think she’s forecasting, just hoping. But it wouldn’t surprise me if she was trying to appear omniscient.

And they get a 30 as anticipated.

Yeah, let’s pimp the tour…with shit camera work. And that’s two total fuckups by camera men. Good thing we didn’t call it a drinking game…

All the male celebs are going on tour. Oh boy. Biggest surprise elimination in 27 seasons, Tom? Really? I don’t think so, but whatever. Ad why does he get to dance again? You realize there is only 50 minutes left and you’re going to screw the winner out of their moment yet again?

Tinashe looks and sounds great…but so bored of these male pros and their Magic Mike moves. Come on, get some real choreo here gang.

For those wondering about the numbers, they are extremely similar to what I forecast yesterday. The numbers for the freestyles that haven’t been danced yet are, of course, guesses.

Dancer Re-do Dance Freestyle Total % of total points awarded
Milo 30.00 30.00 60.00 26.20%
Evanna 30.00 30.00 60.00 26.20%
Bobby 24.00 28.00 52.00 22.71%
Alexis 27.00 30.00 57.00 24.89%
Total Points Awarded 229.00 1.00

If these numbers hold, here’s what Bobby and Alexis would need to do to win. And they’d have to beat both Milo AND Evanna.

Bobby vs. Alexis 2.18% 21,834
Bobby vs. Evanna/Milo 3.49% 34,934
Alexis vs. Evanna/Milo 1.31% 13,100

Alexis is up first with her freestyle, talking about how this was her mom’s favorite show.

I don’t know that Alexis is good enough a dancer for this kind of freestyle.  She looks stunning though. The staging is getting in her way as well.  There isn’t much to this so far.  I think she’s kinda hosed by having a live performer.  Yeah, that was an awkward ending and the dance was much too simple for her and what I think she’s capable of. Not that great, IMO.

Len seems to love it. I suspect that everyone gets a 30 except for Bobby. Bruno says it was a big risk and that the level of difficulty (emotionally) was high and she was on top of it.  CAI says it started out with a struggle, but once she hit the floor she earned it back and it was her best dancing to date. I don’t agree with that, but it is the freestyle.

Oh god, more showmancing. Whatever it takes, I guess.

And they get a 30 as expected.

Bobby’s freestyle is up next.  The one advantage he has is with people who wait to see the freestyles before they vote. This is where Evanna and Milo are hampered. If you’re going to vote, VOTE NOW.

There’s no talking during freestyles!! But it’s who he is…he needs to flap his gums.  Took a long time to get to the dancing. And he’s off time. So many dancers I lost him several times. I thought that dance was short…and he’s talking again.  Okay, the best part was Tom ACTUALLY flossing. LOL. That was clever.  And they throw in some more shit camera work.

Bruno seemed to love it, says Sharna did a fantastic job. CAI is confused (she stole my wine!!) – she seems to love it too although she comments on his counting out loud.  Len says he’s not always been the judges champion – he’s Len’s champion tonight though.

Score: 30??  I hope like hell the judges know what they’re doing. :::runs off to do the numbers:::

NUMBERS UPDATE:  If all four couples get a 30 on their freestyle, here is how the numbers end up.

Bobby vs. Alexis 1.30% 12,987
Bobby vs. Evanna/Milo 2.60% 25,974
Alexis vs. Evanna/Milo 1.30% 12,987

I think Bobby beats Alexis, but can’t beat either Evanna or Milo.  After that, it comes down to who gets the most votes – Evanna or Milo. It all might actually hinge on the freestyle – but I might give the edge to Milo since he’s not going last.  Evanna based on actual dancing.

Milo and Witney up next with their freestyle.  The umbrellas are dangerous, but if they pull it off it could be amazing.

Oh Milo! Looking all grown up there. Starts off very well.  Lots of actual dancing.  It’s going to piss me off that Alexis and Bobby each got 30’s when you stack their dances up with this one.  Yep. Pretty cool. Vastly superior to the two that went before it.

That look on CAI’s face should be her thinking why did I give Alexis and Bobby 30s??  Usual freestyle hyperbole comparing to other seasons BS. Len is raving also.  Bruno…also raving.  I’m tired of typing, can you tell? 🙂

Score: 30, as expected.

Hurry up and get Evanna out here!! Jesus, cutting it kinds close once again.

Is Keo going to throw up? Dancing to Evanna’s favorite dance in the world. Keo says he’s going to go big. I hope he doesn’t go too big – sometimes less is more.  Keo talking about how he made family/friend with Keo. Evanna getting weepy.  She says this was one of her happiest times.

Clever staging and I love this song too.  Wow. Nice lift. Love the fast/slow components.  Damn, I loved that. It just made me happy. It was such a happy, joyful dance. Fantastic!

Len is talking about the evening and the dance.  Calls this dance the cherry on the cake, he loves the mix of styles. Len congratulates Keo. Bruno raves. CAI says she did a great job, she made it her own. Says there is something very special about her – agreed.

Scores: 30 – well deserved. Still pissed that Bobby and Alexis also got 30s – it lessens the scores for Evanna and Milo.

VOTE VOTE VOTE!!

Looks like we’re getting some results right now.  Oh first we have to have some kind of emotional song while we look at shots of the contestants. Why do we keep doing this same thing every season?? Find another way, kids.  Have a killer pro number (with shirts on the men for a switch) while we wait for the producers to count all the votes.

Okay, here we go….

Going straight to the winner….

The Winner is….Bobby and Sharna.

This show is dead.  You heard it here first. The day DWTS died.

Dancing with the Stars Season 27 – Media Before the Finale, Plus a Future Contestant Reveal??

Evanna and Keo talk to InStyle…although I got it from Just Jared.

“Going through the dance and proving I can do it and I can handle the nerves and handle the dance has helped my confidence,” she continued. “That is something I can take with me on auditions and stage shows.”

“I remember when we first danced,” her partner, Keo Motsepe, chimed in. “And I said, ‘Girl, you are good.’ I look at her and think, ‘Oh! What more can I do there?’”

Evanna added that Keo has taught her how to turn negative energy into a positive outlook.

“It’s unlike any other experience,” she said of their friendship. “Being with this person every single day, through sweat and tears, and dancing for hours, the fact that we still get on — that’s a bond for life.”

Milo talks about his parents and about being a “wild child” to Parade Magazine:

And even though now Milo appreciates all Camryn did for him, he admits to being a bit of a wild child, always being into things that other kids weren’t doing when he was younger.

“The fact that she was able to deal with me for almost 18 years is crazy,” he says. “When I was like five, I didn’t know how to play guitar, but I would get a guitar and go outside my house on this bridge, and I would just play guitar for everyone. I didn’t know how to play and I didn’t know how to talk, but I would just do it. I can just imagine my mom being like, ‘Where is my kid?,’ and going around the block trying to find me.”

Juan Pablo on his Eliminations – and some inaccuracy from TV Line. Note, this paragraph is completely wrong. Nice try?

In order to determine who goes home each week, Dancing With the Stars combines the judges’ scores (which can reach a maximum of 30 points) with votes from the home audience. But the current system weighs viewers’ votes more heavily, which means even a well-scored contestant like Di Pace can be sent packing if he doesn’t get enough support from the audience. In fact, Di Pace was sent home even after scoring perfect 30s for both of Monday’s performances.

Then there’s this gem:

On the heels of Di Pace’s elimination, incensed fans are calling for changes to the voting system; some have even suggested the introduction of a “judges’ save,” through which Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli can spare a couple that would otherwise be booted. (And this isn’t the first time such an idea has been posed: Glee alum Heather Morris was also prematurely eliminated from Season 24, which sparked a similar discussion about changes to the voting.)

“The show’s been going on for 27 seasons, and looking at the thousands of comments I’ve got, people aren’t happy with the system. So, yeah, 27 seasons later, maybe it is time for a refresh, a little nip and tuck,” Di Pace offered. “Maybe instead of being completely a popularity contest, it could actually be more of a skill contest. But who am I to say? I think the fans’ outrage will probably work for something.”

Gee, bitter much JP?? You didn’t get the VOTES. And the judges save was the abundance of 30’s you got throughout the competition – earned or not. But worst of all was this nugget:

“If I’m going to be objective, we were the ones bringing pieces of art to the show. We were bringing really good, amazing pieces,” he said. “For that reason alone — the fact that we didn’t get to perform one last freestyle, which was going to be out of this world — I’m sad.”

I think perhaps you and Cheryl should think about WHY you didn’t get the votes. Or not. :::shrug:::

Then there is this bit about a rumored contestant for this season who got cut when she got arrested – Gretchen Wilson. From “The Blast”:

Sources tell The Blast that Wilson was locked down as a cast member for this current season of “Dancing with the Stars,” which premiered in September and is down to the final four contestants.

Back on August 21, the “Redneck Woman” singer was arrested at Bradley International Airport in Connecticut following a “minor disturbance” on a flight.

So, next fall Gretchen?? This show is all about rehabilitation. 🙂

DWTS Season 27, Week 8 – Dancing by the Numbers and What it Takes to Win

As you know, it’s pretty hard (if not impossible) to do a real “Dancing by the Numbers” when the show is set up like it is this season. That is, the winner will be determined this Monday by *last week’s* votes, this weeks live vote and this weeks dance scores. It’s kind of crap – but at least they added a live vote to last weeks votes so if you voted for JP you have a shot to vote for someone else. Here are some important points from the press release before someone says, “but Heidi, the winner is determined only by the live vote” – not so, kids. Don’t listen to (other) people on the internet. 😉 Note the emphasis (added by me) in the second paragraph.

For the Repeat Dance, each couple will perform a tango, cha cha or Charleston. The Repeat Dance scores will be combined with the Freestyle Dance scores for a judges’ final tally. The judges’ tally will be combined with viewers’ votes from the previous week. Additionally, viewers can participate in an online-only live vote for the remaining couples, where, at the end of the night, one of them will be crowned the “Dancing with the Stars” champion.

Viewers will be allowed to participate in an online-only live vote at http://DWTSLiveVote.com. Voting will open at the beginning of the live broadcast and close approximately five minutes after the last dance. The live vote will only be available during the live broadcast in the Eastern and Central time zones. However, any individuals with access to http://DWTSLiveVote.com will be permitted to vote while the vote is open, regardless of their time zone (provided they are voting from within the U.S. and Puerto Rico).

First, let’s take a quick look at what it took for JP and Joe to be eliminated last week. As per usual, I see people getting hysterical, thinking this means Bobby is going to win. Or Alexis. Here was the leaderboard:

Dancer Score Team Dance Total % of total points awarded
Milo 27.00 27.00 54.00 16.82%
Evanna 30.00 28.00 58.00 18.07%
Bobby 21.00 24.00 45.00 14.02%
Juan Pablo 30.00 30.00 60.00 18.69%
Alexis 28.00 30.00 58.00 18.07%
Joe 22.00 24.00 46.00 14.33%
Total Points Awarded 321.00 1.00

What did Bobby have to do to be safe over Joe and JP?? Well, not a lot when it comes to Joe. A huge number when it comes to JP.

% Different Votes Needed Per Million
Bobby vs. Joe 0.31% 3,115
Bobby vs. Milo 2.80% 28,037
Bobby vs. Alexis/Evanna 4.05% 40,498
Bobby vs. JP 4.67% 46,729

But remember, this doesn’t mean everyone and their brother is voting for Bobby – it could easily mean that no one was voting for JP. Courtney and I have been saying since day one that he has had little to no impact. Good dancer? Of course. But very Juan Note (tm Courtney). 🙂 For Bobby to be safe in a double, he had to beat two people. He obviously beat Joe (3,116 votes per million) and JP (46,730 votes per million).  In order for JP to go home, though, it wasn’t just Bobby that beat him, it was EVERYONE.

Milo vs. JP 1.87% 18,692
Alexis/Evanna vs. JP 0.62% 6,231

That number on the far right is the number of votes per million votes cast that Milo or Alexis AND Evanna got to stay over JP.  So, everyone got more votes than he did. Hell, maybe even Joe did – but we’ll never know, because Joe was also in the bottom two.

Anyway, moving on –

So, to determine what it will take to WIN this season, I’m going to make a wild guess at the scores each couple will receive – in many cases I’m going to assume that they score similarly to how they scored last week. This is what I typically do during the live show and it has worked out reasonably well. I’ll let you know where I make any changes.

Now, without JP and Joe in the mix, the over all vote total decreases. I’m going assume that everyone except Bobby gets a 30 in their freestyle. I’m also going to assume that Bobby does a bit better in his re-do dance, scoring a 24. Alexis stays the same. I’m also going to assume that last week was a fluke for Milo and that he, along with Evanna, gets perfect scores. I’m thinking that, barring disaster, the judges are going to like either Milo or Evanna for the win and will score accordingly, putting Alexis just slightly behind them. Here’s what the leader board would look like in this scenario.

Dancer Re-do Dance Freestyle Total % of total points awarded
Milo 30.00 30.00 60.00 26.09%
Evanna 30.00 30.00 60.00 26.09%
Bobby 24.00 28.00 52.00 22.61%
Alexis 28.00 30.00 58.00 25.22%
Total Points Awarded 230

It’s always frighteningly close in the finale, but most of the time, the right person – or the right top two – emerges in the end.  What we will find out is if the lower number of voters – and the correspondingly lower number of voters – will throw a wrench into what is typically somewhat predictable end result for the show.  I think it unlikely, but you never know. Do the shippers or Bobby’s fans have strong enough fanbases to over rule the will of the average viewer?  I tend to think they’ll be offset by JP, Evanna, and  Milo fans pissed off that Bobby is still there.   If I’m even close to right, what will it take for Bobby to win the whole thing?

Bobby vs. Alexis 2.61% 26,087
Bobby vs. Evanna/Milo 3.48% 34,783

So, for Bobby to win, he would need to get roughly 26,100 more votes per million votes cast than Alexis and 34,800 more votes per million votes cast than BOTH Evanna and Milo.  Those are some decent numbers. He may be able to pass Alexis – and I wager he probably will, since in any normal season she would have been eliminated a couple weeks ago (showmance week, possibly).  But I don’t see him getting past either the Potter kid or the Disney kid – both have fanbases of their own and are very good to great dancers.  People who tend to tune in only for the finale will likely vote for the best dancer, if they vote at all.   I do think with the addition of a live vote, the judges will play it safe and NOT hand out any pity scores – that is, they won’t know for sure how he’s doing so he’s unlikely to get two perfect scores. I’ll be surprised if they give him one perfect score.

What will it take for Alexis to win? Well, if I’m close on the scores it only takes getting about 9k more votes per million votes cast than BOTH  Evanna and Milo AND she needs for Bobby to not cover the spread.  Meaning she needs for him to NOT get the 26k more votes per million votes cast than her.   She could maybe get past one of Evanna or Milo, but I don’t see her beating both of them.

What will it take for Evanna or Milo to win? Well first off, they need for Bobby to not cover the spread of  about 34,800 more votes per million votes cast. Second, they need for Alexis to not cover her spread of about 9k more votes per million votes cast.  If neither spread gets covered – meaning that Bobby and Alexis get 3rd and 4th places, then whichever of Evanna or Milo gets more votes, wins.  It can be as little as by ONE vote.   Yes. ONE VOTE.  So, if you have a favorite between those two, you best vote your fingers to the bone during the show. Every vote is going to count.  As they always do. 🙂

What do I think WILL happen on Monday night?? Well, I think Milo is going to take it home.  I think they will finish like this:

4th – Alexis
3rd – Bobby
2nd – Evanna
Winner – Milo

Now ask me what I WANT to happen on Monday night. 🙂 Here’s what I want to happen – and honestly, it’s a pretty tough call. Even money says to me that either Evanna or Milo wins, but since I so rarely get what I want when it comes to this show, I hedge my bets. Here’s what I WANT to happen:

4th – Alexis
3rd – Bobby
2nd – Milo
Winner – Evanna

I think it’s really too close to call between Evanna and Milo and everything hinges on not only the dancing and the scoring on Monday night – but I suspect a lot will depend on the spin and how each couple is portrayed. I’ve never wanted a pro to talk about how they’ve never won before – time for Keo to speak up, man. 🙂 If Bobby shows his true colors – the colors I’ve been hearing about on his radio show – then that helps Alexis. I don’t think Milo can do anything wrong, per se, it’s more about how his competitors look on their own. Keo’s real emotion the other week when Erin was talking about how she teases him and comments on how he’s never made it this far – that felt like a show-winning moment to me. But was it?? It was much more genuine and heartfelt than anything coming from Alexis and Alan (or Bobby and Sharna) – but was it enough?? I sure as hell hope so. That was a moment where I sat up and said, “Damn, they could win this thing.”

What do you think??

PureDWTS Season 27, Week 8 – Power Rankings, Who Will Win?

Y’all, it’s been a week…hell, it’s been a season.  And if I’m being honest, this is one season that has felt like it has absolutely DRAGGGGGGED on – I’m not sure I’ve wanted a season to be over this badly since maybe season 11, when Bristol was sticking around like a bad rash. Strike that – season 14 was pretty bad, too, when William Levy was getting jammed down my throat every week. Season 20 wasn’t much better, given that it had been predetermined it was “Val’s season” from week 1 and it got monotonous pretty quickly. To put it plainly: I’m just plain ready for this season to be over, and have my life back for the next 5ish months. I’ve got plans in the pipeline 😉

So in the penultimate elim of the season (which was a double, thank goodness – a 5-person finale on a season where the finale is only 1 night is a bit much), we finally shook Grocery Joe loose (yassssssss) and also lost Juan-Note Pablo in the second “shocking” elim of the season.  Can’t say I was terribly upset about either one leaving us – Joe should have been gone in week 1, and was little more than a glorified weightlifting spotter in his dances on Monday night; Juan Pablo, while probably deserving of a spot in the finale, just never resonated with me as a person – and I apparently wasn’t alone, as he clearly wasn’t getting the votes to stay. I think it says something when we ALMOST get a rare show of vulnerability from Juan Pablo (talking about his mother beating cancer in his rehearsal package, and dedicating his dance to her), and then it was like “JK, I’mma still serve you macho Latin lover realness!” and he performed a dance that, while technically quite good, was little different than every other dance we got from him this season: all smolder and sexiness, and no vulnerability or emotion.  I will credit him for being (to my knowledge) the first and only real-live Argentinean to perform an Argentine tango on DWTS, but at the end of the day, I think he & Cheryl probably missed the mark a bit in the grand scheme of things – you have to be a good dancer to succeed on this show, but people also have to like you and care about you; and if you’re constantly serving the same bravado week after week, dance after dance, and not taking the time to show the viewers that you’re also human and have feelings, they’re probably going to tune you out after awhile, no matter how great your dancing is.

I’ve been getting quite a few questions about what I think the future of this show looks like, given the three-ring circus that this season has been. Unfortunately, I think it looks grim – can’t remember where I had this conversation, but Heidi, John, & I were talking recently about the future of the show, and either Heidi or John said “At this point, they’ve gotten what they wanted out of the show – they probably don’t really care what happens now, and will let the show continue its steady demise until they find something better to take its place.” Let’s face it: getting 25+ seasons out of a show where it stays a ratings juggernaut is not just good – it’s great.  Almost unheard of…so for DWTS to be taking a dive in season 27, it’s more than likely just the show running its course. Sure, there’s been some wonky stuff going on this season, but I’d chalk a lot of that up to overall viewership being down and less of a normalizing influence in the voting as a result; I don’t think it’s so much that the SHOW has changed, it’s the AUDIENCE moving on.  I have often found myself saying “I just want to see something I haven’t seen before!” for several seasons now – be it a new pro, some more “out there” choreographic risks, an unexpected celeb, etc. I can’t imagine I’m alone in that desire.  Given that the show has basically already called several audibles this season (rearranging the elimination schedule, changing the original plan for a 5-couple finale, and cutting the finale down to 1 night), I don’t think ABC would have any qualms cancelling a prospective spring season if it came down to it – really, the only evidence we have of a spring season in 2019 is an interview (which I haven’t seen myself) where Sharna apparently said she had “signed on for several more seasons, including the spring one”; given that the pros contracts are pretty open-ended, and being “on contract” just means you must avail yourself if they need you, I don’t think we can safely assume there’s going to be a spring season, just that Sharna is available for it if there is one. And someone also pointed out to me that the winter tour has now been extended through early March – if there was going to be a regular-length spring season, the cast would have already been announced at that point, and the couples rehearsing. At this point, I’m dubious that there’s going to be a spring season at all, but if there is, I think the best we can hope for is a shortened one, a la season 26. I’d personally be just fine with no spring season, as I’m going to be tripled up on my classes by that point and also job hunting out west. DWTS can come back in the fall, when I’m done with school, hopefully settled into my new digs in Denver, and with a lot more free time on my hands 😉 Read more..
