DWTS 16 Preliminary Power Rankings – Part II

So you read my predictions for who is going to be gone before the midpoint of the season.  Now it’s time for my predictions for who’s going to be sticking around longer…and who’s gonna win :-) Read on!

6.) Ingo & Kym – Not sure quite what to make of these two – they’re very likeable and seem to have great chemistry, Ingo seems willing to work hard and eager to do well, and Kym, as always, is a very patient, nurturing teacher that brings out the best in her partners.  But while everything seems pretty on the surface, I can’t shake the feeling that Ingo may be a bit…awkward.  The rehearsal video and the pix we’ve seen so far seem to reveal some “Ralph hands”, and Ingo himself has admitted that he’s not exactly a graceful guy.  I’m also seeing shades of him taking things just a little too seriously – and we’ve seen how being a little too serious and a little too desperate to do well can torpedo a couple’s chances of getting votes.  Now don’t get me wrong – compared to some of the couples on the bottom half of the list (namely D.L. & Cheryl, and possibly Sean & Peta), Ingo & Kym have a great connection and “taking things a little too seriously” is less of a problem than, say, having zero chemistry with your partner or having a partner that just doesn’t seem to give a hoot :-P I just don’t know that Ingo & Kym are going to coast through this season like Hines & Kym did.  Fanbase-wise? I’m inclined to say that Ingo will benefit somewhat from the “soap vote”, although likely not to the degree Kelly did – since Ingo’s character on GH seems to only be recurring at this point, I don’t know that he’ll have as many of the same impassioned fans that voted for Kelly, also voting for him.  We already know Kym is pretty well-loved, so her fanbase should help out somewhat…but I think overall, these two will probably be more on-par with the Cameron Mathison/Edyta partnership, rather than the Kelly/Val one.  There are just too many more popular celebs (likely with better dance skills) this season for a soap star to really have a hope and a prayer of making it to the finale, methinks. Good Morning America Does A Cover On Dancing with the Stars Live In Las Vegas (Video)

This is so good! If you missed it yesterday morning, Good Morning America had a great segment on the Dancing With The Stars Live show in Las Vegas. They show clips from the show. You can see Lacey Schwimmer, Kyle Massey, Dmitry Chaplin, Carson Kressley, and more dancing. Cameron Mathison also interviews some of the cast and claims he’s “still got it” too. Note: there’s a funny bit with Tia Carrere about her time dancing with (long haired) Maks too. Don’t miss it and more below!

Also, and as most of you know, our John personally attended the opening show. He also attended the pre and after events. If you haven’t read about how he had an encounter with Tom Bergeron and Conrad Green, you can do so here. Stay tuned as John is planning to post more on this event soon for what he experienced.

DWTS2012 Peta Murgatroyd And Donald Driver Heartfelt, Fun Interview On Good Morning America & More

Donald and Peta were on Good Morning America with Cameron Mathison today. Donald recalls his time of growing up homeless and the friend who died in his arms of cancer. He also talks of his devotion to family. You can see some glimpses of he and Peta’s Argentine Tango tonight as well. So beautiful! They also play some football while in the dance studio. A fun and heartfelt interview! More below. You can also read more on Donald and Peta and their dancing in a new ABC blog here.

I love these two! If you live in Wisconsin, be sure you vote early because phone lines have been known to go whacky there if you wait until after the show. This is actually a good rule of thumb no matter where you live and who you are voting for.

DWTS Season 14 Preliminary Power Rankings, Part I

It’s that time again, kids – time for my seasonal preliminary power rankings! For those of you unfamiliar, I do these after each performance show, and it’s basically a measure of how likely a couple is to stay vs. how likely they are to get sent home a particular week – the #1 spot is saved for the couple I think is the safest, and the bottom spot is who I’m predicting to get sent home.  Keep in mind that it is NOT simply a ranking based on scores – how boring would that be? For my rankings, I tend to take into account fanbase, scores, memorability, running order, demographics, the whole shebang.  And for this edition, I’m simply relying on what I know and have seen of the couples thus far – so here’s who I think will be the first to go, all the way up to who I think will make it to the middle of the season.  Enjoy!

12.) Katherine & Mark – I went back and forth over who I thought would be the first to go, but I think that ultimately, these two probably have the greatest hurdles to overcome in order to stick around and I’m not sure they’ve got the juice to do it.  There’s been painfully little media on these two – only the occasional candid tourist shot in London, and no official promo interviews.  The little rehearsal footage we’ve seen hasn’t really told us much, other than the fact that Katherine is probably decent but not fantastic.  And worst of all – Katherine is coming into this competition as a relative unknown, surrounded by quite a few sentimental favorites & big personalities who may be fanbase ringers. If there’s anyone that really & truly needs to be making a big splash right now, it’s Katherine – and we’ve seen next to nothing from her.  As for dance skills, she has the potential to be quite good, given what little concert & rehearsal footage I’ve seen of her.  She does have a natural rhythm, and she’s not terrible to look at – but keep in mind that dance skills really don’t mean sh*t if people aren’t motivated to vote for her.  She has Mark, which I would say is more of an advantage than a disadvantage, given his skill & popularity; however, even Mark is not immune to the dreaded early elimination, as we’ve seen with Kim, Shannen, & Kristin.  Could she blow us all away & have some staying power? Possibly, but she’s got a LOT of catching up to do in order to have a shot at keeping up with juggernauts like Jaleel, Melissa, Sherri, Maria, and Gladys.  And at this point – I’m afraid any exposure she’s gonna get is gonna be too little, too late :-(

11.) Gavin & Karina – I may be seeing things, but I had a bad feeling about this couple from the first time I saw them interact during the cast announcement – it seemed like a very strained, awkward encounter, and it made me seriously question if they were truly a well-matched couple.  Then I heard that Gavin was still going to be touring while doing the show, and I became even more skeptical. Then finally, I saw a video of them rehearsing – and now I’m pretty convinced that they aren’t going to last long.  The biggest issue I see here is commitment – I get the feeling Gavin is really only doing the show to promote his new album, and his true commitment lies not with the show itself, but his tour.  It’s very much like Michael Bolton all over again, for me – a currently touring musician who does a short stint on the show as a bit of self-promotion.  Don’t get me wrong, Gavin seems like a nice guy & all – I just don’t think his heart or his head are 100% in the game.  And with all the “squeezing in” they’ve had to do with their practice time, I’m not sure he’s going to have the skills to improve upon what I consider to be a pretty weak dance background.  Then, of course, you’ve got all the celebs this season who are likely quite a bit more popular than he is – a singer who was arguably more successful & well-known 5 years ago than he is now, vs. a soul legend, an iconic tv character, a well-established actress, and a talk show host with a big mouth? He’s either going to have to be a fabulous dancer from the get-go, or ridiculously charming, or both – because he’s up against some stiff competition for votes.

10.) Martina & Tony – Ok, I know a lot of you have been saying “Oooh, Martina’s gonna be so fierce this season! She was fierce on the tennis court!”, but I’m not quite sold on the idea that her talent on the court is going to translate seamlessly into success on DWTS.  A great work ethic is always an asset, but I think Martina is going to struggle quite a bit with the performance aspect of the show – in the few videos I’ve seen of her, she has an almost “zen” quality to her: very calm, collected, resolute, and confident.  But calm, collected, resolute, and confident are not exactly what you need when you’re doing the jive and should generally be acting like a cartoon character :-) And while I do praise her focus and “zen-ness”, the fact that Tony has a track record of having partners that tend to blend into the woodwork is a bit worrisome – if Martina doesn’t come out with both great & memorable dancing, I think she could be gone quicker than we expect.  I also wonder if she might be splitting votes with someone like Jaleel or Melissa, who were at the height of their fame at roughly the same time Martina was.  It seems like it could be a battle of the pop culture icons.  I think she has the potential to be a pretty good dancer, but a lot of it will hinge upon the choreography she’s given…and the impact she makes.. DWTS14 Casting Rumors – The Typecasting of Season 14, Part I

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m just ready for the cast announcement so we can get all of this speculating over & done with! But to help us get a handle on who might be in and out, let’s take a look at what combination of “casting types” we might get this season.

The Olympian

Previous examples: Kristi Yamaguchi, Shawn Johnson, Apolo Ohno, Natalie Coughlin, Misty May-Treanor, Maurice Greene, Louie Vito, Evan Lysacek, Hope Solo

Advantages: The winningest of the 12 types, their obvious advantage is their athleticism – you won’t see these guys struggling with strength or endurance moves.  In addition, the same tireless work ethic that helped them medal in the Olympics will likely carry them through the toils of the competition. They also seem to be adored by the masses, as many are seen as “hero” figures – which translates into a formidable voting fanbase.

Disadvantages: For those specializing in sports that are less “artistic” (i.e. swimming, running, volleyball), it might be a bit hard to really get into the character of the dance and truly perform to the crowd.  Previously incurred injuries (or the fear of incurring an injury that might hinder their participation in subsequent competitions in their sport, a la Misty May-Treanor) may also slow them down & limit their mobility.

Possible candidates this season: The only semi-legitmate Olympian prospect I think we’ve heard is Bruce Jenner – and I would like to think that TPTB would have mercy and not subject us to back-to-back seasons of Kardashians in the audience :-D

The Athlete

Previous examples: Chuck Liddell, Warren Sapp, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, Helio Castroneves, Laila Ali, Floyd Mayweather, Ty Murray, Evander Holyfield, Jerry Rice, Clyde Drexler, Monica Seles, Jason Taylor, Lawrence Taylor, Chad Ochocinco, Kurt Warner, Rick Fox, Sugar Ray Leonard, Chris Jericho, Hines Ward, Ron Artest

Advantages: As with the Olympians, their athleticism & work ethic make them well-suited to the competition.  An edge they might have over their Olympic counterparts: sports like football, auto racing, & mixed martial arts tend to have a larger, more mainstream following than some of the Olympic sports.

Disadvantages: Again, a lack of “artistic” experience & previous injury (especially with the football players, who have really taken a beating over the years). Some of the more muscular athletes in hard-hitting sports may also have difficulty with the refined, precise moves of some of the dances.

Possible candidates this season: Vince Young tweeted that he had been asked to the do the show, then suspiciously deleted the tweet.  Guilty much? ;-) We’ve also heard Annika Sorenstam’s name in the mix.

DWTS Season 14 – Rumor Round Up!!

You’ll notice that ProWatch is no longer in this spot – it had it’s day and I’m afraid we’re going to get nothing more until Tuesday. If you still want to visit it, you can here —> ProWatch.

Every season around this time we create a listing of people who have been rumored to be on the show for this season…and sometimes past seasons, if we see “suspicious” behavior. Things that make you go “hmmmm…” Well, thanks to Vogue, who keeps a list, here we are again.  Seriously – thank Vogue because I don’t have the time to hunt them all down, sadly. Wish I did.

Anyway, I tend to rank, categorize and editorialize as I go, so bear with me. :-)

ETA an update to Troy Aikmen. See below.

ETA #2 – Sasha Cohen is officially NOT dancing this season; she confirmed on twitter even though we had pretty much figured that one out. :-)

The Most Solid Season 14 Rumors

Jack Wagner, Melissa Gilbert and Sheri Shepherd – when TMZ first reported on this one, I was skeptical.  TMZ has a bit of a spotty record, although some have forgotten. A couple of seasons ago, they got the whole cast exactly right, but last season I tend to think they got played.  They got exactly nobody right…they claimed Nancy Grace, but AFTER others (including us) had reported it.  But, Gossip Cop backed them up this time, so I have to give it more weight. Of all the sites out there, Gossip Cop not only confirms some rumors, but puts the kibosh on others – some that I knew to be false.  They are more reliable, IMO. So…I have to say that I think this is the real deal. Melissa and Sherri are also past seasons rumored contestants – and we know that happens quite a bit. As for Jack, well, ABC Soaps in Depth said they heard a former GH star was dancing, hand Jack was let go from The Bold and the Beautiful (a CBS soap), so that kinda opens a window for him, eh??  As for the video of Melissa going into the DWTS studios…well, that doesn’t look like the normal entrance, but the building structure seems the same.  If so…well, doesn’t that eliminate her as Maks’ or Derek’s partner? Unless Derek was fibbing about when he starts rehearsing (next week, per Derek on Ryan’s show).

Maria Menudos – This one isn’t quite as solid as the others, and so far TMZ has no back up.  But I sure would like this one to be true.  Maria herself is giving nothing away. She’s following no pros, she’s making no teasing comments (that I’ve seen, anyway).   If I had a vote I would vote yes. :-)

The Not as Solid, but Still Kinda Solid Season 14 Rumors

Annika Sorenstam – Pro Golfer rumors coming from all sides, including golf aficionados, Tony Dovolani and Annika herself.  This one seems plausible, but not as plausible as others. She said she would like to do it, some on twitter are claiming she said yes (although those tweets read kinda weird to me).

Vince Young - Vince straight up said that he had been asked to be on DWTS. Couldn’t tell if he was joking, but the fact that he deleted the tweet was kinda telling.  Of course, being asked doesn’t mean he said yes.

Not Solid At All, but Not Speculation Either

Dolly Parton and Gavin Degraw - Both of these rumors came from Hollywood Life who, unfortunately, did not have a good track record last season.  And we haven’t heard much about it since the original posting. Not to mention that Dolly, when previously asked, said “hell no”.  At first I considered Gavin a more real possibility, but now I’m not so sure. UPDATE: He tweeted earlier today that he’s on his way to LA. Hmmm….

Aferdita Dreshaj - Miss Kosovo said not long ago that she was dancing on DWTS – but was she talking about the Kosovo version of the show? Probably – which is why I stuck her in this category.

Bruce Jenner – Bruce I could handle, but I gotta say no to any other Kardashian relatives. :-)  This comes from Hollywood Life once again.

Paula Deene – Hollywood Life was throwing a bunch of stuff at the DWTS wall and waiting to see what would stick. Paula was one of their rumored dancers. I will be curious to see if they get any right.

Bar Refaeli – She was rumored as in negotiation, but it was by a website that I had never heard of before. Not really sure what to make of it, actually, but why would she do it?
