DWTS 15 All-Stars: The Great “Previous Dance Experience” Debate – Kelly Monaco Edition

Ok, so for a NORMAL season, this is the time where I’d usually cull videos from YouTube that show our new crop of celebrities doing dance-related things in their past that may or may not help their performance on DWTS, and then Heidi, Vogue, & I would point & laugh and generally have a grand ol’ time offering our commentary šŸ™‚Ā  But obviously, this season is not following that pattern – there’s not much point in looking at videos of Kirstie dancing around in the kitchen scene of Look Who’s Talking or Drew Lachey gyrating onstage with 98 Degrees when we already have footage of them dancing on DWTS…so why not take a look at some of their best & worst performances from their original seasons, and see how they stack up? In addition, I’ll try to add videos of any dancing the celebs have done SINCE their season, that may or may not help them this time around.

Today we’ll start with the ladies, and we’ll start at the very beginning: season 1, which Kelly Monaco won.Ā  For her best dance,Ā I picked her freestyle:

And for her worst, I chose the waltz:

Ok, first thing that jumps out at me here: the barĀ has definitely been raised quite a bit since season 1 – the level of the dancing is much higher nowĀ than it was in Kelly’sĀ season, which couldĀ pose some big problems for her.Ā  I’m always a bit reluctant to pick someone’s freestyle as their “best dance” (because I think freestyles are usually pretty universally-pleasing, since the couples can do whatever they want), but in this case, I feel like it actually had quite a bit of ballroom content and thus was more on-par with what she was capable of in a regular dance.Ā  With that being said – it’s still a pretty weak freestyle, when you look at the freestyles we’ve seen since season 1.Ā  Kelly’s getting off-time, missing steps, and generally looking pretty wobbly on her feet – it may have gottenĀ a 30 back in season 1, but I’d be surprised if it would have gotten anything more than a 23 in a more current season…and I think she’d be lucky to even break into the 20’s during the all-star season, if it’s going to be as competitive as I think it is.Ā  As for her waltz – it was during the first week of the first season, so there was undoubtedly some major nerves at work and I think she just ended up very stiff & scared.Ā  And did I just see some pretty blatant lifts in there??? I don’t necessarily think it was bad…it just wasn’t very interesting to watch.Ā Ā  But there isn’t going to be any room for nerves on this season, so Kelly’s going to have to overcome those pretty quickly if she wants to stick around.

So has Kelly been doing any dancing since season 1 wrapped that might help her this time around? Well…yes and no.Ā  She did a brief stint in the burlesque revue Peepshow in Vegas back in ’09, along withĀ Mel B (WARNING: It’s slightly racy…avert your eyes if you’re offended by pole dancing, lingerie, and gyrations):

Ok, so it looks like Kelly didn’t do a TON of real dancing in Peepshow…seems like just a lot of gyrating suggestively and being a sexpot.Ā  So while it might not necessarily help her with her actual dancing, I do think it might help her stage presence in that it will help her evoke a more confident, sexy, smoldering character for dances like the rumba & Argentine tango.

Court’s verdict: All things considered, I think Kelly’s unfortunately one of the weaker contestants this season, and has got a lot of hard work ahead of her if she expects to stick around – the fact that there are several non-winners (Joey, Kirstie, Melissa, even Pam) on this season that areĀ quite a bit better than Kelly in terms of dance skill tells me she’s got some tough competition.Ā  However, she’s also still young and in good shape, which could give her an edge over some of the older contestants.

What do you guys think? Does Kelly have the juice to go all the way, or will she flame out early?

DWTS 15 – All Star Cast Announcement (Live Blog)

Another season, another cast…oh wait. Another season, with an old cast, of sorts. šŸ™‚ Ā I am actually excited – didn’t think it was going to happen. Ā I imagine the screaming will start shortly, however.

Anyway, tune in here at 10:30 pacific (1:30 eastern time) we’ll be updating as fast as we can and, of course, snarking as hard as we can. We will get snark out of Vogue if it’s the last thing we do. šŸ˜‰ Ā Come on, Vogue, you can do it!! šŸ™‚ Ā If you want to see the announcement as it happens, I think you need to watch ABC.com

@ABCPublicity says on Twitter (will update if official page is different):

ETA 1: Ā The general media is reporting this cast – let me know if I made any errors. Ā They announced early and I was caught off guard. šŸ™‚

ETA 2: After a moment to catch my breath…I’m digging this cast, with the huge exception of Bristol. Ā And many people are going to have new partners, so they better ALL have new partners. If they stack it in Cheryl or Mark’s favor by giving them Gilles and Shawn, respectively?? I’ll be kinda pissed. Give Cheryl Drew since he’s been away for a while and put Mark back with Bristol. Ā That said…can Shawn or Gilles win against the likes of Helio or Apolo?? I doubt it. Even without Julianne, those are two very likable dudes.Ā

ETA 3: UPDATE From ABC Read more..

Dancing by the Numbers – DWTS Season 5 Retrospective!

Since they just aired season 5 on GSN, I figured I would do a little numbers retrospective ā€“ particularly because of the supposed ā€œshockingā€ elimination of Sabrina and the horribly prolonged run of Marie Osmond.

I have to say, after watching Sabrina dance again, I have to agree with Len and Bruno when they commented on how she danced her foxtrot ā€œtoo hardā€ ā€“ it was way too hard and she did miss a couple steps.Ā  Combine that with the talent and/or name recognition of her competitors, then is it really a surprise? Perhaps so, since Jane had been in the bottom two the week before. But everyone but perhaps Helio and Mel B was much better known with the DWTS demographic than Sabrina was ā€“ and Mel B was a better dancer and Helio was a huge and charming personality. Anyway, at the end of the night, week 6, the scores looked like this:

The Judges Scores and Percentages

Place Celebrity Score Percentage
1. Mel B 30 16.67
2. Helio 28 15.56
3. Jennie 27 15.00
4. Cameron 25 13.89
4. Sabrina 25 13.89
6. Marie 23 12.78
7. Jane 22 12.22

Now, what these scores mean should be somewhat obvious to longtime readers of this series ā€“ Sabrina was not at the bottom of the leader board and, in fact, had a pretty decent lead on Marie and Jane and was tied with Cameron.Ā  In order for Sabrina to be eliminated, the following had to happen:

–Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  She didnā€™t cover the spread of the dancers above her, AND;

–Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Cameron got ONE more vote per million votes cast than her, AND:

–Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Marie got 11,150 more votes per million votes cast than she did, AND;

–Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Jane got 16,700 more votes per million votes cast than she did.

Now, conventional wisdom has always said that Sabrina fans got over confident or were sure she was safe. But look at those numbers. Thatā€™sĀ  a good bit of overconfident and Iā€™m not sure I believe it any longer. Marieā€™s faint was the week before, but there is no reason that Jane should go from a bottom two situation the week before to being safe at Sabrinaā€™s expense the very next week.Ā  She made up a pretty big deficit.Ā  Iā€™m inclined to believe that, like other lesser knowns before her, Sabrina didnā€™t have the fanbase that many believed. And we all know by now that great dancing isnā€™t always enough. Ā And in case you still don’t agree – Sabrina was the high scorer in 3 of the 5 previous weeks. The two weeks she wasn’t the high score, she was in second place. The instant she falls out of the top 2, she’s eliminated. Coincidence?? Read more..

Kendra Wilkinson Would Dance Again If DWTS Producers Made The Call, Don’t Count On Julianne Hough

Below is an interesting interview with Julianne Hough at the Spike TV Guys Choice Awards this past weekend. Access Hollywood starts out by telling Julianne they know she won’t dance again on Dancing With The Stars, but, they want to know who she’d like to see return for the Dancing With The Stars All-Star Season. Julianne says she’d like to see Mel B, Sabrina Bryan, and maybe Jenny Garth return. Julianne also speaks about the new Nicholas Sparks movie “Safe Haven” she’s just signed for. For those hoping for Julianne to return for the All-Star season, I wouldn’t count on it? “Safe Haven” starts filming next month according to US Magazine. She’s going to have her plate full.

Also at the Spike TV Guys Choice Awards was former Dancing With The Stars contender Kendra Wilkinson. She told Access Hollywood sheā€™d be willing to come back for the Dancing With The Stars All-Stars if producers made the call. Below is more….

ā€œI am happy doing my new show, ā€˜Kendra On Top,ā€™ā€ she laughed, referring to her WeTV program. ā€œBut, you know what? ā€˜Dancing with the Starsā€™ was fun. If they consider me an ā€˜All-Star,ā€™ of course Iā€™ll do it, but if not, I wonā€™t cry.ā€

Kendra hit the Guys Choice Awards with husband Hank Baskett, but he revealed he isnā€™t as good of a dancer as his wife.

ā€œNow I have to go take dance lessons by myself to keep up with her, so Iā€™ve gotta work on trying to play catch-up,ā€ he laughed.

And, apparently, Hank has a lot of catching up to do. Asked if he was good dancer, Kendra replied. ā€œNot really, no.ā€

ā€œHeā€™s OK. Heā€™s not the worst,ā€ she added, with a laugh.

Hmmm,…Kendra again anyone? No…just no. šŸ˜Æ

What Do You Think Of TV Guide’s Dancing With The Stars All-Star Season Dream Cast

TV Guide recently asked their readers to comment for who they’d like to see dance in the all-star edition of Dancing With The Stars next season. Below are their 12 celebrity picks which is interesting in comparing them to our numbers polled in our Dancing With The Stars All-star Cast Wish Post taking place at the moment. Some of the same celebrities are winning in our polls and some are not. So, what do you think of this cast below if it were to come true?

Kelly Monaco
Sabrina Bryan
Mel B
Gilles Marini
Melissa Rycroft
Drew Lachey
Joey Fatone
Mario Lopez
Stacy Keibler
Ralph Macchio
Evan Lysacek
Marie Osmond

I say bring them on even though I wasn’t real wild about Marie when she danced before. I especially love the idea if Ralph, Evan, Mel B, Drew, and Mario were to come back. Also, to make things more interesting, challenging, and maybe even more fair in some cases, put new partners with them from who they had before.

If you haven’t done so yet and would like to do so, be sure you vote and make your voice heard in our Poll post HERE. It’s fun to watch the results too. Stayed tuned because Marianya has some cool things planned for updating us on the results.
