DWTS13 Week 3 Power Rankings

Ok, so “best year of my life” night wasn’t quite the emotional trainwreck I was thinking it would be – I was actually pleasantly surprised at the honesty and vulnerability of many of the dances. However, I was also just downright confused by some of the dances. 😛 Let’s just get right to it, shall we?

1.) JR & Karina – Say what you will about JR “playing to people’s emotions” (ummm…didn’t everyone kinda do that tonight, to a certain degree?), but he was the only one tonight that I though even came close to having the proper hip technique, and he made me feel the emotions behind his dance more than anyone else.  Was Karina dancing around him? Maybe a bit, but I did see him actually attempting to “be there” for her at every turn – reminded me a lot of Chris’ rumba last season.  I wish Karina would have given him a bit more to do, but I think the way he let his face “talk” in the dance was captivating.  The guy has had a heartbreaking backstory – let him tell it without writing it off as “playing the sob story card” (actual tweet I read – some people really do have garlic in their soul like the Grinch!).  Emotion aside – it was still a pretty damn good rumba. I grow to love JR more and more each week, and based on what I’ve seen from him so far – I can only assume the best is yet to come 😉 Thankfully, he tied for the 2nd highest score, and had probably the most memorable dance of the night, so I’m sure we’ll get to see what he has in store for us!

2.) Ricki & Derek – Admittedly, I thought this one was overscored at first – but then I watched it again and realized that they were the ones who best combined choreography, technique, storytelling, and connection to the dance tonight.  I felt like they actually managed to tell a story through their movements, and the choreo wasn’t overly dramatic – it was simple & stripped-down.  Technique? Eh…I thought JR & Chynna both had better technique than Ricki, but hers wasn’t bad.  The rumba’s a tricky dance, so I’m not really expecting any of the couples to really nail it at this point.  Was a little thrown by their song at first – all I could think of was Mia’s drug addiction piece from SYTYCD – but by the time they got through it and told their story, I kinda got it. High score of the night, and a pretty good rumba in a sea of less impressive ones…I’d say they’re pretty safe, especially with such a drop-off in points further down the scoreboard. Read more..

Ultrasound sales specialist by day, semi-knowledgeable DWTS fan by night...with a smattering of hair & makeup enthusiast, occasional model, baker, and crazy cat lady peppered in to make things REALLY interesting ;-) I might pee my pants in happiness if Donnie Wahlberg ever does DWTS - or if they ever use "Sunglasses at Night" as a paso doble.

DWTS13 J.R. Martinez: “In this life, all you need is for someone to believe in you”

J.R. Martinez told the Huffington Post that he is representing all of the veterans on Dancing With The Stars. He said, “The thing is, a lot of our vets come home and they feel displaced, and they don’t feel like their voice matters, so for me to be a spokesman and have that honor to educate America about who we are and what we are, it’s like I’m doing my job. I’ll never have the opportunity to go back to Iraq and serve my country, but I tell people this is my way of serving. I don’t have a weapon in my hand, and I don’t have a uniform on my body, but my uniform now is my scars and weapon is my words, so I’m still serving.” They explain how he got hurt in Iraq to how he ended up getting an acting gig on All My Children. Here is more for what he says on the show below, but, be sure to visit the link. It’s a great, inspirational read with a video interview included!!

“In this life, all you need is for someone to believe in you,” said Martinez. “You can go a long way if someone believes in you. I’ve been incredibly lucky to have so many people believe in me, and I want to help people believe in themselves. There are people that didn’t know who I was before, and that’s okay because it’s not like I’m Brad Pitt, but because of ‘Dancing,’ they know now, and I get to reach millions.”

And if you think there’s any competition between the “Dancing” stars off the dance floor, think again.

“There’s no backstabbing and no drama,” said Martinez. “It’s just fun to watch people step out of their comfort zones and do things that they’ve never done before and witness them grow so much throughout the entire process.”

When asked if he’d expected to be on top of the leaderboard in weeks one and two, the actor responded modestly.

“No,” said Martinez, “But then again, I didn’t have any expectations in regards to score and the leaderboard. Honestly, all I kept thinking about was my footwork and my extensions and just enjoying the moment and focussing on Karina [Smirnoff]. That big turn we did, we almost took out. In rehearsals we would try it and I would mess up and drop her. I was like, ‘Oh my god, you’re going to be broken by the time week one starts.’ But then ultimately, we decided to keep it, and it came out just beautiful.”

Julianne Hough To Perform On Dancing With The Stars Oct. 14th!!

Just as so many of us have hoped, Julianne Hough will be returning to Dancing With The Stars!! Next week, she’ll be performing in the Results show! Below are details from USA Today….

For one night only: Julianne Hough will cut loose on Dancing With the Stars next Tuesday, an appearance timed to the Oct. 14 opening of her new film — the remake of the ’80s classic Footloose.

Her beau, Ryan Seacrest, hinted that the show’s two-time winner would be returning while doing an interview with her brother and DWTS regular Derek. But the reality show queen turned movie star has confirmed to USA TODAY that she will indeed be twirling under the glitter ball once again.

She won’t be alone, Hough says. “I’ll be dancing with Kenny (Wormald, her co-star who fills Kevin Bacon’s shoes as Ren). We will definitely be dancing to Footloose, but we will have a few tricks up our sleeves in the beginning.”

Excited?

Adding: Below is Julianne talking on her return to the show.

Note: Tom announced last night during the show that she will be dancing two numbers with one being a dance with her brother Derek.

DWTS 13 Inside Mark Ballas and Kristin Cavallari’s Samba Rehearsals (Video)

The Insider goes inside Mark and Kristin’s rehearsal studio on their second day of practicing for the Samba. Mark comments how they were able to go through the whole routine the day before and Kristin “mostly knows it”. Mark has designed her costume. It’s going to be full of glitter, but, she refuses to show her stomach like he wants. He’s hoping to change her mind by Monday. You can view them practicing for the dance a little in the video below.

Kristin also talked with Ryan Seacrest about their Samba tonight and having a small breakdown, romance rumors, her costume (it’s RED!), and more….

Hmmm,…this is going to be one interesting night on Dancing With The Stars. 🙂

DWTS David Arquette And Kym Johnson Hoping For A Comeback Tonight With Their Rumba

KTLA tells David how people are loving his interviews with Howard Stern and how he lets loose (they are?). They talk of how crazy Howard Stern is and how he tries to get people to admit to anything. David said he means everything he says and it’s from the heart even though people can misinterpret it including Howard Stern. Kym is beside him and they talk of his fashion and dancing personality and the Rumba tonight. You can listen to the full interview at the link…if you dare. LOL!!

Picture above from David’s facebook account. He titled it, “Kym and I working on the core.”

Derek Hough on Dancing With The Stars 13: “It’s going to be a very competitive season”

In a new interview with TV Guide, Derek Hough says the scores were close last week and “it’s going to be a very competitive season”. They ask him how this week’s rumba is going which you can read on below (I love that he choreographs the beginning of a routine last. Whatever you are doing, Derek, don’t stop doing it!). To read on the comparisons between Ricki and Kirstie Alley, Derek and Ricki’s biggest competition, and what they are doing to improve themselves, and more, be sure to visit the link.

How’s the rumba going?
Hough: Great! I tend to choreograph the beginning last. I don’t know why I do that. I leave the first 20 seconds open and go back to it last, but on the first day, I had the other three-quarters done and she picked it up really quickly. That pleasantly surprised me.

You have to tell a story this week. What’s Ricki’s?
Hough: What I really like about her story is that it’s about triumph, which is what I think we all want. She was saying that this past year, she wasn’t fully allowing herself to be happy or to be open to love again. So, the fact that she’s able to open up again and to be happy was a huge triumph for her. It’s kind of fantastic that it’s happening now and I’m kind of part of it in the present. I think there’ll be some pretty heavy and dramatic stories this week. Hers is happy. I think it’s really sweet.

Note: Derek and Ricki will be guests on The Ellen Show on THURSDAY! So, be sure to tune in. According to Ellen’s site, they are going to dance.
