Dancing with the Stars Season 22, Week 3 – Who’s Dancing What…and When?
Who’s Dancing What for Week 3 on Dancing With The Stars Season 22? What silliness will occur this week? Are we going to get “Most Memorable Year” aka Week of the Rumba??
Ok, here’s what we have so far. For all the latest media and interviews after the show, this link.
ETA: More dances below via Nyle’s twitter and Sharna’s new blog. ~Vogue
ETA2: A few songs & dances. I’m guessing on Marla’s dance, because I’m not sure there’s any other dance that could fit “Happy”. And there was some question as to whether Wanya’s song had gotten cleared or not – but if it did, MAN…that’s gonna be a gorgeous waltz. -Court-
ETA3: Apparently Von’s a huge Phil Collins fan, and part of his pregame ritual involves listening to his music. Source isn’t 100% sure on song, but it’s the only one Von mentioned by name and they’ve used it on the show before, so I’d say it’s most likely this one. I don’t think Von’s song and dance is meant to be funny…but just visualizing him doing it, I’m cracking up, cause all I can think about is Mike Tyson in The Hangover 😛 -Court-
ETA4: Ginger’s dance, via DWTSGossip. I would say that Ginger having contemporary is a pretty “lucky” get, but since her partner is Val, I’m not so sure. On the plus side, he can legit choreo a dance that has no movement for quite a few bars. That appears to be in his wheelhouse these days. 🙂 ~Heidi
ETA5: Court here, doing a drive-by to drop in Nyle’s song, which Peta thinks is “fantastic” and is really excited about 🙂
ETA6: …and another drive-by with Paige’s dance.
ETA7: Judging from the brief snippet in his Snapchat from earlier – sounds like this is Antonio’s song. -Court-
ETA8: Thoughts on the rest of the songs: I can’t imagine that Mischa is somehow going to be better at samba than cha-cha or tango, and I doubt her song is really going to resonate with viewers. I may tear up during Doug’s waltz – “Rainbow Connection” just guts me, for some reason. “Home” is a dull song by a singer with an even duller name. If Witney doesn’t choreograph some dramatic moves for the infamous “In the Air Tonight” drum solo, I may commit seppuku with a plastic knife. – Court-
ETA9: A couple last-minute updates before showtime – according to Mischa’s blog, she is now doing a foxtrot instead of a samba, which sounds a helluva lot more manageable given her skill set (or lack thereof). And according to Val’s instagram, he & Ginger are going first – still a decent running order position, but I daresay we may finally see Ginger get realistic scores this week…going first historically seems to mean you’re going to be underscored, relative to the rest of the cast. -Court-
ETA10: George Pennacchio confirms on Twitter that Paige & Mark are going 7th. Paige’s best running order position yet, and the first time she’s cracked the second hour. This is a good sign 🙂 Not so good: Doug going second (statistically the worst position), & Kim going 3rd (not much better). Looks like they may be stacking the back half of the show with the big hitters. DT confirms that 9th, 10th, 11th belong to Mischa, Wanya, & Nyle, respectively.
ETA11: Per DT, Mischa’s still doing samba…maybe she misspoke in her blog? Or got confused?

Hmm.. Very interesting dances so far. I’m curious to see if there are going to be any contemporaries this week since it’s most memorable year. I’d honestly be surprised if there wasn’t.
If Wanya can do well in the Waltz, I’m definitely calling him for top 2
@Ananya, I do agree with that. After last night, I definitely see Paige and Wanya in the finals, but I can’t think of who else. Maybe Ginger cause we all know who she works for, but who will be the 4th couple?
@Tina I think Nyle will also make the final. I think Keo did lot better with Jodie this week and she does have the fan base. So Nyle and Jodie might place above ginger if TPTB stays neutral
Foxtrot for Kim and Sasha makes perfect sense, since I think it’s the only dance that would go with the “Facts of Life” theme — if indeed that’s what they’d be dancing to.
I wouldn’t count Nyle and Peta out for the finals, either. Peta’s such an intelligent woman. I think she designed a bad rumba this week, though. Len was right — too hectic. Rumba’s supposed to be calm, smooth and sensual.
Hope Karina can smooth out some of Doug’s rough edges this week. Loved their Paso!
Well.. If Val keeps producing the choreography he has been for Ginger, they might not make the finals because if Ginger had Derek or Mark, or maybe even Artem, they’d probably make her shine because she can dance. I feel like Val is hindering her. And with Jodie, I feel that Keo is doing a better job with her, however she needs to be a little more confident and she will be solid. I kind of like Ginger’s personality a little bit more though.
Already very excited to see Wayna do a ballroom he’s had two similar dances so this will be a test to see if he can keep up his good scores
I’m confident about Wanya and a waltz! We might find that Latin is his strength but he has a great personality and willingness to learn. Plus, he’s surprisingly light on his feet for a heavy guy. I really expect him to last through the finals unless TPTB get more heavy handed in their manipulations. For instance, am I the only ones thinking that they are giving a wee bit of help to Doug Flutie in the choice of dances for him in order that he’ll stay a couple of more weeks? Also, calling a 3 person “jeopardy” with him in it look like a blatant call for his fans to rally and vote.
Nyle and Peta continue to be a revelation too! I’m hoping to see them all the way to the finals too. DWTS NFL season – bah!
My predictions:
Mischa – Viennese Waltz to “Hide and Seek”
Jodie – Foxtrot to “Everywhere You Look”
Ginger – Contemporary (or some other slow dance) dedicated to her son
I don’t know if you saw it already but Nyle tweeted that he and Peta have the tango next week.
Awesome. Thanks Anon!
Loving the dance choices so far! I’m trying to picture how roller skates and foxtrot will work though lol. That intrigues me. Plus we got some waltzes 🙂 hoping that Paige chose tango or contemporary and Jodie does a dance to the full house theme song but the Carly Rae jeoson version.
It’s odd that a few of us are sensing laziness from some of the choreographers in Derek’s absence – I certainly do. I wonder, though, why they are (or seem to be) discounting Mark. He and Lindsay schooled the rest of the class last night. Do they so easily buy into the echo chamber on social media that proclaims very loudly that everything will be fine and fair once Derek is gone? Seems to me that this is a very big mistake. Mark may not win, but he’ll take the big prizes away from you children…and her name is Emmy.
As long as there are guys like Mark and Derek…and women like Lindsay…out their busting their asses to create great dances regardless of who they’re dancing with (or against), the rest of the pros will just be mediocre choreographers and personalities on a dance show.
We’ve always had Waltz and Viennese Waltz on the show, but never Slow Waltz as far as I can remember. Is it just a slower Waltz like the name suggests or are there particular steps that need to be included?
Slow waltz = regular waltz. Some people just tack “slow” in front of it to differentiate between the regular waltz and Viennese waltz.
I’m certainly looking forward to next week but I’ve got to say that Witney needs to step up her choreo. And why is hip hop thrown into every routine? C’mon Witney – try harder! Also – Sharna’s choreo seems just OK to me too. And as for Val – let’s not go there! Boring! Boring! On the other hand – Keo’s routine last night was so enjoyable to me. So not only do the contestants need to bring their “A” game – so do the pros and unfortunately some of them are just going through the motions. It seems like a lot of people this season just want a paycheck…
I wonder what dance ginger have next week maybe a rumba
I wonder if Paige might get something related to her sport next week. Would love to see a dance to “momma said knock you out” or maybe the rocky theme song for her
@Tina Personally I’m guessing a contemporary.
OOh a tango from Nyle and Peta should be a great dance to watch. However, I do agree that some of these pros are really letting their celebs down with the lack of creativity and choreography. Productions, props, lasers, lights, mini stages, and costumes can only do so much. At the end of the dance, if the choreo lacks viewers can pick up on it.
Speaking of costumes earlier, the costume dept. and pros are killing it this season. I really think they are going for an Emmy for Outstanding Costume Design this season. Thus far, the costumes have brought out the personalities of the dance more so than before (at least for me). Not all of them, but many more than just 1 or 2.
Ginger and Val’s samba lacked SO much. While I enojyed the quirky theme and costume design, the choreo was nothing short of basic. I choreographed a more intricate and creative dance in my head tbh. 😛
Paula Faris even said on The View that Ginger may go all the way, she won DWTS Chicago a while ago, and is a great dancer. I know she’s not a pro, but it woulda been nice to see Val push her and encourage her through a challenging samba. Even if he doesn’t want her to peak too fast or wants Ginger to stay in the middle of the pack, he could still create a challenging dance and receive an mediocore score. Honestly, I’m not sure.
I don’t know if some of the celebs are trying to take things in their own hands by giving others like Keo more of a chance by simplifying their own routines or if its the TPTB. But, I feel like Peta, Val, and possibly Witney are on the “Let’s Have Sharna Win” bandwagon (and I don’t dislike Sharna, but I don’t like foulplay either). Not sure, but disappointed with some of the laziness, or maybe they are burned out from the tour….
Praying Mark feels better and comes back. Him and Paige are 85% of the reason I’m tuning in. I can’t imagine watching DWTS without a Ballas, Hough, or Cheryl out in the same season.
I can see Von and Witney having the samba and Marla and Tony having the rumba or salsa…depends on the most memorable year.
I like that all the dance styles so far are ballroom. fingers crossed for no contemporary or jazz. It would be nice to see a straight up ballroom week after latin night. i doubt that would happen but I would love it.
I would have guessed Jodie will foxtrot to Everywhere you look but she was saying something about the song being emotional in her E interview so I doubt that.
As much as i would love Jodie to do a dance to the full house theme song, I think she’ll do a dance dedicated to her sobriety and gaining her children, and maybe tie in full house to a smaller extent, which I would love to see just as much.
Happy on Most Memorable Year again? Let’s hope Marla can do enough to stand out from Charlie’s take on the song.
Also, surprised at the lack of Rumbas so far, unless either Mischa or Paige is doing one. I’m pretty sure the last time there was a Most Memorable Year Night with no Rumbas was in S17.
Whoops, I forgot we don’t know Von and Ginger’s dances either!
@Charlotte
I completely agree. As much as I would love a full house themed dance I’m much more excited to see this dance which I believe to be about her overcoming her drug addiction
We have a Foxtrot and a Tango, now all we need is whiskey to have the name of Tina Fey’s latest film.
?
I’m happy to see Wanya in a standard dance. I like Lindsay’s waltzes too.
I think it’s nice that Marla has Jive. It’ll stand out, hopefully in a good way with all the ballroom. Tony just has to step it Way up with his choreography. His Jives for his partners all seem so tame and delicate. Marla’s in great shape, she can handle being challenged.
I would imagine that even if Mark is not cleared to actually dance, he can still choreograph and oversee Paige’s dance. Much in the same way Derek did when he was injured in Nastia’s season. Hopefully they’ll show that Mark is the one driving the bus if Alan is picked to perform with Paige again.
ETA:
I know it’s not confirmed that Marla has Jive, but that’s what I would guess as well.
Darn. I swore to myself I was never going to hear that damn “Happy” song again. It does the complete opposite to me as it just gets me very irritated. I’ve never been so annoyed by a song before lol. Gaaah.. Oh well, I guess I’ll handle it for the minute that Marla has to dance it. Hope she does well if she indeed has a Jive!
I thought “Rise Up” would make for a beautiful Contemporary routine when I heard the song. I guess the beat of it does sound appropriate for a Foxtrot but I’m thinking that limits Jodie and Keo as to what they could do with it. A Contemporary would’ve been amazing but I’m sure the Foxtrot is gonna be lovely.
Wow! The National Anthem for Wanya?! That’s incredible.. I REALLY hope they clear it because that would indeed be one gorgeous dance if he does it well. Interesting how Lindsay did a very “American” Waltz last season with Alek and she could potentially do an even more “American” one with Wanya 😛
I doubt VERY much that Mark is going to just leave Paige in Alan’s hands. That would be foolish as Alan has NOT ONE LICK OF SEASONING as a pro on DWTS. Did all you fangirls hear that? Get over the Alan thing. Mark has TWO MBTs and a couple Emmy nominations in addition to what? 17 seasons worth of experience. Yeah, handing it all over to Alan sounds like a great idea and exactly what the producers would allow. Only NOT.
How does that work if a song doesn’t clear? Especially if it’s “Most Memorable Year”.
@Sandy – They usually have at least one backup song in place.
Thanks Courtney, That’s what I figured. And in checking over some of Boyz II Men music they also have recorded “Star Spangled Banner”. Maybe that could be an option for their backup song.
I’m thinking jive too for Marla but im wondering if it could be a good salsa or cha cha cha. Still I’m loving her song choice 🙂
I love Jodie’s song! I don’t exactly think Foxtrot when I hear it but hope it turns out good all the same.
Fingers crossed that Wanye’s song clears. That would be amazing!
I was really hoping for no contemporary but they just couldnt do it could they. I predict it will be lift heavy and Witney doing most of the dancing
I am cracking up at Von’s song, if that’s what it is, lol. I have to say that pre-season, Von and Wanya were my early favorites. I’m kinda disappointed with Witney this week. 🙁 I thought their routine was “cute” but he’s such a big guy and shouldn’t be confined to a tiny stage like the one they were on. I hope she listens to the judges’ comments and works with him more on his technique. It’s find to add a splash of the celeb’s personality to the routine but don’t over-do it.
I know if he really applies himself and if Witney steps it up with the choreography, they can break out of the middle of the pack.
@Sandy
The Star Spangled Banner is the national anthem. With every country having one it would get real confusing if they didn’t have names and were all just called the national anthem. I hope it clears though as it will be a beautiful version for them to dance to and I have been loving them as a partnership.
Oops! Duh, I didn’t even connect the two. I always just say the National Anthem. Okay, I’ll just crawl back under my rock again. 🙂
I’m actually very interested with the dances so far, only one Contemporary as of now and lots of Ballroom. Hopefully the rest will follow suit.
You guys who is phil collins? Sorry i dont mean to be rude, but im 22 and grew up as a first generation american with parents who dont speak english so lots of american culture stuff i kind of didnt learn (for example i know of full house but have never heard of tootie or phil collins).
Is phil collins the guy who made all the songs in tarzan? Lol
He is an English singer. He actually did some of the songs for Disney’s Tarzan (the old animated movie, not the new one coming out soon). I can’t really recall any of his other hits besides the one from Tarzan.
@jeny Have you seen the Disney animated films “Tarzan” or “Brother Bear”? He’s the guy who wrote the music for those films and sings the songs in it such as ” You’ll Be in My Heart”. That’s probably how this generation best knows him for. He’s been in the music industry for decades as both a solo artist and as in the band Genesis. He’s also the father of Lily Collins, who has been in movies such as The Mortal Instruments, Abduction, The Blind Side and Mirror Mirror.
On another note, I’m glad it seems like Jodie is focusing on her personal struggles instead of just doing a tribute to Full House. I just hope Keo can step it up and give her a routine we know she can handle well.
Has anyone heard any updates Mark? Do we know if he is dancing this week?
I’m with you mods who think that some of the other pro’s may be discounting Mark. He is incredibly talented and very creative. He is more edgy than Derek and he loves expressing himself musically however he is a force to be reckoned with on the dance floor. I set him apart from Lindsey only because she has less experience. She is quickly on the road to proving herself as dynamite as a pro. The others better step up their game and quick.
I would imagine Kim’s song is the Facts of Life theme song, and I’m very excited to see this routine. I loved watching the show growing up and love watching her dance! She brings a lot of joy to the ballroom! 🙂
Mischa said on twitter that she’s picking up the new dance way quicker and having fun so I’m curious what style she got… Maybe Waltz???
Antonio is dancing to Seven Years according to his snapchat
Ginger confirmed she is dancing contemporary on her Periscope this morning…
I know Von likes Phil Collins and all but for some reason I’m picturing that dance being really awkward. Why didn’t they just wait until Disney night and give them a song from a movie he’s done the music for?
Looking forward to Kim’s Foxtrot this week as well as Jodie’s because I really like that song.
I think Ginger’s dance this week could be really cool. I wish it was a Standard Ballroom style because we haven’t seen her do any of those yet but I’m guessing it will be a tribute to her baby and since it’s a Contemporary it will be fitting and also because of that Val has NO excuse to put in filler like he has been doing so far this season.
I wonder what song and dance Mischa has? She said on twitter she’s doing better this week and I’m interested to heat whatever story she’s going to share with us. I’m pretty sure she’ll be going home Monday but I want to see her do at least somewhat well before that happens.
Totally called that Ginger would be doing a contemporary!
I was sure Ginger would have contemporary so no surprise for me. But like you said, it’s very questionable whether it’s an advantage for her or not due to Val’s history of very poor choreographed contemporary routines. I’m sure it was MEANT as pimping by the producers and judges will praise her to hight heaven though, and the fact that another pro who has contemporary is Whitney who isn’t a strong choreographer either is good for them as well.
Yeah, it’s convenient that Ginger got contemporary, but here’s my thing: who’s really gonna be more memorable, Ginger doing a mediocre contemporary with 24 counts of doing absolutely nothing, or 6’3″ Von flailing around with 5’5″ Witney, doing a likely-unintentionally-hilarious contemporary to a very famous, very dramatic song? My money’s on the latter 😎
Ginger may get love from the judges, but I think Von’s gonna get love from the viewers.
# Courtney I hope you’re right but it also depends on their packages and the storyline of the dance, which is extremely important when you have contemporary on the most memorable week. Let’s just hope that the fact that Ginger can’t get the pimp spot again this week (at least I hope so) really makes her forgettable unless her pro really steps up the choreo. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against Ginger in general, I just hate when someone is pimped so hard, especially when it’s Val’s partner AGAIN.
@Court, Question: The Boyz II Men “Star Spangled Banner” seems really slow to me. It’s beautifully sung, for sure, and I know they’re doing the “Slow Waltz” but how slow is too slow?
Seems to me the slower you dance the better your technique needs to be because every little flaw will be magnified ten-fold. For Wanya’s sake, I hope he gets his heel leads down pat and Lindsay keeps them in hold because Len will be waiting to pounce.
Love the song choice for Nyle! I can see why Peta’s excited about it. 🙂
@Cidra – Eh, the regular (or slow) waltz has really been more open to artistic interpretation these past few years on the show – I don’t think they’re so much concerned about it fitting in the standard 3/4 time anymore. I don’t really even think it’s going to look much like a waltz – more like a “contemporary done in hold”. So the song should be fine 🙂
Thanks, Court. Ah, so it’ll be a contempo-waltz; I can see that working with the song (hope it clears). Even though it won’t be Len’s “cup of tea”, I’m sure it’ll be a great performance from Wanya and Lindsay.
As you pointed out (above) with Ginger vs. Von, as long as the viewers love it and connect with it, it shouldn’t matter too much if ol’ Cranky Pants complains. Of course, if the slow poison drip continues week after week, that could have an effect on viewers’ perceptions (but we’re not there yet so I’m not going to look for trouble).
I kind of thought contemporary made sense for Ginger because it is probably dedicated to her baby boy- like a ballad or something. Val’s contemporary dances aren’t my fave either (maybe a waltz would have been better). Looking forward to Wanya and Lindsay. They are definitely my faves this year- followed by Nyles and Peta. Also looking forward to that one! And Paso for Paige makes total sense as well…can’t wait to see what Mark cooks up!
Few predictions for this week:
*Paige would do a great Paso and would set the standard even higher for other contestants to match. I sound so much certain and that might be because of last two performances that she delivered. She was elegant and graceful on week 1 suiting the Foxtrot really well. On week 2, she turned up the atmosphere with her mean Salsa. I can just hope for this trend to continue further.
**Ginger and Valentine will tie up for the top score (with Paige, Von or Wanye) but won’t resurrect much enthusiasm in audience. Basically, the fact they have got contemporary and it’s week of emotions would do it all.
***I don’t know whether I should write it or not but considering this as a platform to discuss both positives and negatives, I have a gut feel that Nyle would do a mediocre Tango. There’d be a lot of emotions running through but the rumba that he did made me realise that music plays a crucial role in shaping ones performance. I just hope that he would bring out the fierceness that is needed for the Tango. And plus that’d be the first Ballroom performance he will do!
**** As far as Wanye is concerned, I am in a fix. He is light on his feet plus he has Lindsay! But on the other hand, the technique needed for waltz could be difficult to master.
No doubt Ginger’s kiddo will feature prominently in this week’s rehearsal package. What’s the point of having an adorable baby if you don’t use him to up the “awwww” factor on sob-story night to squeeze as many sentimental votes as possible out of the misty-eyed mommy demo. I just pray to all the little dance gods, they don’t parade him around on the dance floor Monday night. That would be truly nauseating.
@Moksh, for hearing people music plays a big part in shaping a performance, but for Nyle, that might not be the case. Perhaps, he and other members of the deaf community are moved and inspired by the lyrics of a song, and he translates that into the physicality of the dance.
I can totally see Paige doing a Paso Doble to Eye of the Tiger, it would totally fit and it was used for Mark and Sabrina’s Design a Dance Paso, so we’ll see if they use a different song…
Mischa had the cha cha this week and next she has the samba I don’t see her doing well with the samba is harder than the cha cha . I think next week will be her last. I was hoping she would get a ballroom dance next week.
Why oh why are they using “Party in the U.S.A.” by Miley Cyrus for a samba…again. Those two together are cringeworthy to me. I believe Artem is a great choreographer and is creative, but really? Does Mischa want to leave or does DWTS want her to leave?…or do they just want some more “behind-the-scenes-variety-showish” drama. Either way giving her a samba won’t help the cause.
Any word on an opening number for Monday…or anything all pros related? (I doubt it)
I’m with you Court! I think I’ll be teary eyed with Doug’s dance. My guess is maybe his son who is autistic will be his most memorable year! His might be the most tear-jerker moment!
@Cidra Yes it could be. Bit still I’m not convinced. Let’s just wait for next week. I hope I will be wrong. 🙂
It’s not completely impossible, I guess, but Cha-cha is arguably the easiest out of the ten dances and Samba is the hardest, wanna bet on how Mischa will be doing? And to “Party in the U.S.A.”? Really? Hopefully someone will do a Samba to “Hip Hip, Chin Chin” later on.
Other than that, thank God for only two Contemporaries and no Jazz in sight. As always I’m hoping for a great dance from Nyle, and hopefully Doug will rise even higher this time.
Oh gosh, Doug’s song will open a flood of emotions for me. I bet it’s his son, Dougie’s, favourite song or at least one that he and his son are able to connect with together. I hope that Doug dances it beautifully!
Speaking of favourite songs and singers, my husband loves Phil Collins. We saw him and Genesis play at a live concert just outside London, England back in the day. (KT Tunstall opened for them) I had to lol when someone here asked who he was! Yes, I am getting old!
Thanks to Courtney, PH, Vogue, John and Lori for all the great stuff you find and write for us here! It makes DWTS so much more fun to watch!
I can see Doug and Karina causing me to tear up with this one — da@n them! and methinks Doug’s going to show-up the young NFL-ers again. Score another one for the OG.
Mischa and Artem really want out, don’t they? I can almost imagine them putting their heads together and saying “OK, what do we need to do to ensure our elimination?” and coming up with this song and dance combo. Yikes! I’m not sure I’ll be able to watch the train wreck. I can’t even imagine Mischa doing a Samba roll or shaking her “maracas”.
I associate Rainbow Connection with joyful and innocent childhood memories, so Karina and Doug’s Waltz will probably make me a soggy but happy mess on Monday.
That Home song is one of those tunes that I liked the first few times I heard it, but because it was way overplayed on radio and the Summer Olympics that year, I got so incredibly sick of it. I’m still sick of it. I imagine I better gird my loins for the over the top gushing from the judges for Val’s repetitive and uninspired contemporary.
LOL…Von & Witney have just issued an invitation on Snapchat for Phil to attend the show on Monday. I may sh*t my pants in delight if that happens 😛
So no Hide and Seek for Mischa then? Color me disappointed.
Court #71 – I think your pants will stay pristine! lol!
Whitney is likely to fare better with contemporary than Val is, though, Lucie. She’s at least been cross trained. I don’t think Val even tries to learn new things in the off season.
One thing, I would certainly trust Von more with lifts in a contemporary than Val! His history doesn’t speak well in that regard; I still wince thinking about the botched lift with Julianne!
I’m a positive person so I’ll give Mischa the benefit of the doubt on this one. Her Tweet last night gave me *some* hope that maybe this Monday she’ll redeem herself with a good dance. Now the Samba can be difficult, but I’m betting Artem is gonna make it as simple as possible for Mischa (which might make it a bit boring).
“Home” is one of my all time favorite songs and if I was a celebrity and had to do a dance for MMY-Week, I would do a Contemporary to it because it pretty much fits perfectly with my life story up to this point. Please for the love of God don’t ruin it for me Val..
I was hoping to see Paige do a softer dance this week like a Rumba or Waltz but I’m still excited to see her Paso Doble. That’s a pretty dramatic piece of music so if she gets down the Paso technique and all that stuff it’s gonna be one amazing dance. Won’t be surprise if she tops the leaderboard once more next week
Very interesting song for Nyle.. Not quite sure how it’s gonna tie into his MMY but I look forward to hearing more about it! I think this could be a very good dance, fingers crossed!
The only real tear jerker I can see there being next week is Doug because man that song is gorgeous.
Same Bia! “Mmm, watcha sa-ay…”
It may be slightly early to discuss this but since I’m assuming Mischa will be heading home on Monday I’m already trying to figure out who will be the next to go after her. After Week 1 I’d say Doug but his big comeback this week and the fact that he will probably have one of the most emotional routines of the night on Monday will probably keep him safe for at least a little while longer. I think Jodie and possibly Ginger, Antonio, and Paige, are also going to have very “tear-jerking” routines/stories on Monday night, and so I’m guessing all will be safe the following week if they do at least halfway decently with the dances. And Nyle and Wanya will probably be fine because they’re Nyle and Wanya. Enough said. 😉
I think I’m most worried for Marla, Kim, and Von for the Week 4 elimination at this point, in that order. Marla is nice but she’s in the middle of the pack at the moment and I can’t see her getting to the top with a Jive, plus I can’t tell whether or not she is getting a lot of votes. It just doesn’t seem like it’d be her strong suit. I also don’t really know about the amount of voter support Kim is getting and I have no idea how she will fare with Standard Ballroom. And Von hasn’t really stood out these first two weeks (to me at least) and I have a gut feeling his Contemporary routine won’t be that great.
So excited for Kim’s Foxtrot. I wonder if she will dress in a replica school uniform she had to wear on the facts of life. As far as Dougs song goes, I’ve actually heard it quite a few times at weddings for a father/daughter dance. So I’m thinking maybe it involves the year she was born.
General thoughts-
I really excited/hopeful for Jodie’s dance. She was one of my early favs and I just haven’t connected with her at all so far. With her story, the singer actually being there, etc. I’m hoping this turns out awesome.
I think Paige could knock this dance out of the park, and I hope the focus of the package isn’t too much on Alan and his “contribution.” I love Mark and Paige and as long as he’s healthy I really want to see him back with her.
Doug has become one of my favorites and I think I’ll cry during this dance. He’s just comes across as so honest, loyal, humble, and hardworking and those are rare qualities for professional athletes these days.
Ginger’s song strikes me as a little fast and weirdly upbeat for a contemporary, but maybe that’s just me. I also am at my saturation point with her baby/new mother angle (which may be because I don’t have/want kids).
I have a feeling that both Misha and Marla’s songs/dances are going to get lost in the shuffle, which would be bad for Marla going into next weeks elimination assuming Misha leaves this week.
Interesting that people are calling out Ginger for having a Week 3 Contemporary, while several others in seasons past (*cough Amy Purdy cough*) have also had it at this stage in the competition
Amy Purdy wasn’t the recipient of pimping that Ginger and Val are. Big difference. Honestly, when are people going to get over the snarkiness about Amy Purdy?
First off, I am not a fan of contemporary period, no matter WHO is doing it, in WHAT week or WHICH season! To me, it seems like you are pretty much guaranteed a pretty decent score (unless you really botch something up) as there are essentially no rules. And since not all contestants always get assigned a contemporary during the season, it seems IMO a way to ensure a couple gets a decent score in any particular week. And again, personally, I’m not comparing (nor do I care who also had this dance in the 3rd week), to me it’s more interesting that some people have been spot on in predicting what dances Ginger would have all 3 weeks. Now that being predictable.
And I agree Susan2, when will the digs at Amy end? Kind of reminds me of the people still whining this season about Derek and he’s not even participating!
Boyz II Men’s version of National Anthem is so slow. Hopefully Lindsay has come up with some very interesting choreography.
I can’t wait to go back in time with the Facts of Life Theme song. I remembering watching it every week (Yes I’m that old). And Tootie (Kim) has to come out on roller skates… she just has too!
I wonder if Nancy, Mindy, and Lisa will be in audience Monday night? I hope so.
It’s kinda funny that they have a Phillip Phillips song since my is tee win tickets to see him today lol. I remember voting for him on idol but can’t really remember any of his songs except for two so I’m guessing he is trying to ride the final season of idol goodwill. The dance I’m most excited for now that I know the song has to be Doug and Karina. I love the muppets. I love the song. I love that movie. Hell if I could I would own Kermit the frog lol.
Damn autocorrect. My sister* won tickets
I’m really looking forward to this week, especially Wanya & Lindsay, Nyle & Peta, and Paige & Mark’s dances. The Star Spangled Banner by Boys II Men sounds fantastic but I just can’t quite fit it into a dance yet, I’m hoping for Lindsay to rock her choreo again, I can’t wait.
Tango is a bit more sharper of a dance so I hope Nyle does better than last week, and I’m excited for Paige’s dancing again.
I’m *so* surprised that Ginger is getting contemporary, who would’ve guessed? *rolls eyes*
It’s a shame that for someone with so much potential, she got a pro that doesn’t really embrace that or acts nice. She seems like a really nice person and can dance, I just hope she doesn’t get too influenced over the next few weeks.
Wasn’t a huge fan of Doug the first week, but he’s really warming up and I’m really starting to like him. Rainbow Connections is also an amazing song. 🙂
“Calling out” Ginger?? Are you on crack?? Oh. Wait. Val fan.
I see that Val’s fans haven’t followed their leaders dictum to stop reading this site. We were doing quite well without ya’lls lack of logic and basic inability to read and discern what is being said.
When they grow the fuck up, Sandy. And in the case of Val’s fans – Never. They stoopid.
I think Wanya will do great. The man got moves so I hope he gets votes from general viewers. As for Nyle, if I’m not mistaken, he said during his package he can hear the music/sound a little bit if it’s loud. I’m assuming the music at the studio probably playing loud enough for him to be able to slightly hear it (?). Or maybe he sense the vibration. It’s fascinating.
@Thiana – I think on the first show Tom asked Nyle if he heard anything or if he felt any vibrations and he said he heard or felt nothing .. which only amazes me more. The guys is fantastic.
#Thiana Nyle is totally deaf.
Just based on songs I am already predicting me needing tissue Jodie, Doug & Antonio’s dances with an outside chance of Nyle
Mischa posted a snapchat of Artem and the troupe dancing to Miley’s song. Hopefully with the troupe there, it might make rehearsals a bit less intense and she’ll be able to enjoy herself. Hopefully Artem’s choreographed something fun like the dances he did with Patti.
In some interview Nyle said they turned up the music really loud so that he could feel the vibrations or something, and that he realized he danced better without it.
I don’t see them Ralphing anyone yet. Nyle is getting a lot of media exposure and this week they gave him a dance that suits Peta’s more aggressive style. Wayna isn’t getting exposure, but it could be because he’s on tour and has no time. The decision to give him a slow waltz could be telling though.I did think the pimp spot last week should have gone to Wanya, Jodie or Paige. It is early, but I’m starting to think that Val and Ginger may be a mismatch. What a mistake it was to discard some of their taller pros like Gleb and Tristan. Would have given them more options.
@Richard (#92), I’m curious to see if Antonio is willing/able to let down his guard and be at all vulnerable. From what I’ve read, he’s had a rough row to hoe growing up and has made a better job of it than many others in similar circumstances. I think there’s a nice guy behind the brilliant smile and the bravado. Right now, though, I feel he’s coming across to DWTS viewers (who aren’t ‘burghers) as a combination of bored, cocky, and disengaged. His monosyllabic answers don’t help matters, but I get the impression he’s not particularly witty. So he probably learned early in his career that the less he says to interviewers, the less likely he is to have his words twisted out of context and used against him.
Cidra, I agree about your assessment on Antonio. I was prepared to love him; I was born in western PA, and my dad bleeds black and gold! I loved Hines Ward! But so far, Antonio has not impressed me! He comes across as self absorbed and not particularly engaging. While I think many other football players (i.e. Emmitt, Donald and Hines) won over the general audience, I’m not convinced that Antonio can. Actually I find Von and Whit more enjoyable at this point.
@Leigh – Normally at this point in the competition I have already chosen my favorite(s). In my opinion it may be too late for Antonio to engage any new viewers.
I’m not even convinced that Sharna is the right partner for Antonio. Something about their partnership just doesn’t seem to mesh well with me.
@Sandy & Leigh – Y’know, I started off this season thinking that Antonio would be more like a Donald Driver, a Hines Ward, or an Emmitt Smith – but so far, he’s more of an Ochocinco to me: too cool for school, putting in minimal effort, and not really connecting with viewers. Part of me kinda wonders if he thought he was going to be able to just ride the Steeler Nation wave, and wouldn’t have to try very hard. Von, on the other hand, has been a pleasant surprise – kind of a less-rambunctious Jacoby, that isn’t afraid to let loose and act goofy and actually seems to have fun. I still think both could use some work, but so far – Von is easily beating Antonio in terms of likeability, from where I sit.
And then Doug – he’s just a darling, like Kurt Warner.
Court, I 100% agree about Antonio! I was trying to think of who to compare him to and Chad is perfect as is comparing Von to jack you and Doug to Kurt. For me Antonio has waited too long (hard to believe at 3 weeks); I already have favorites in Wanya, Nyle and Paige, with Doug as a sentimental favorite!
Oops damn auto correct meant Jacoby!
Is it just me who feels like Wanya is everything TPTB were probably hoping Antonio would be. I love it when I get surprised by celebs on this show.
@M8 – Wanya is basically everything they probably hoped Antonio was going to be, as well as the contestant they hoped Alfonso would be. Wanya has all the talent Alfonso had, without all the arrogance & uptightness – plus, he’s a superfan of the show, so he knows what works and what doesn’t. And hell, Lindsay seems to be all that TPTB hoped Witney & Chelsie would be…these two are a dream couple for me. 🙂
Agreed M8, I didn’t know Wanya from “Adam” before this season, but what a wonderful surprise he’s been! I love it when a celeb can dance and actually ‘gets’ the show.
Wanya and Lindsay’s partnership is ticking every single box. I hope TPTB are smart enough to see what they have in this couple and don’t try to hold them down in favor of some preseason plan to make something/someone else happen.
Chelsea Kane and Mark had the Samba to “Party in the USA” back in S13 and I thought it was a horrible song/dance combo even though I loved them together…
@Courtney – It would be a travesty if Antonio continues down this same path and the Steeler Nation still get him to the finals. Hopefully the three stooges won’t let that happen.
@Geri: Those are the bad memories that came to mind when I read the song/dance choice. But then that gave them a chance to do the “Hip Hip,Chin Chin” routine which was amazing.
@Daniel: I love “Hip Hip,Chin Chin” as well. However, after Mark’s routine I don’t think anyone would do it justice.
I do agree that Antonio is no Hines…but then Sharna is no Kym either. Sharna is falling flat for me this season…her choreo last season was much more creative. Maybe Antonio will blossom mid season week 4 or 5. There is something about his cheesey grin that sometimes comes off as plastered. I need to see the real side of Antonio a more genuine side…maybe this week will do it…if his story is about his fam life and kids.
On another note…Cheryl’s been posting/speaking lots of DWTS tbt stuff. I wonder if she’s going to be a guest judge this season…or maybe wants to. Wishful thinking?
@EmnEm, Heh, I didn’t think Sharna’s choreography *last season* was much to write home about so I don’t see any big change there. As for Antonio, while I’d like to see him let down his guard, I’m not sure that’s going to happen. This could be the second season in a row that Sharna and her celeb have gone into Week 1 looking like frontrunners to a lot of people and have not lived up to expectations. Right now Antonio and Sharna are on the road to being this season’s biggest disappointment.
@Cidra: I gotta say when I think of Sharna’s choreography with Nick, I think of her cha cha week 1. It was inventive with a hint of Witney’s cha cha style in it. I guess that was the only dance I truly enjoyed.
I’m willing to give Antonio a chance, but I just don’t know if he’s going to deliver. TPTB might create some drama, a storyline, or simply pimp them to the moon and back to procure those votes. If Ginger and Val are in the finals with Antonio/Sharna, Nyle/Peta, I’m pretty sure those pros will promote the pimpage themselves for Sharna as well.
Lindsey and Wanye are growing on me…exponentially. Unfortunately, my heart lies with many others, but my votes lie with Paige and Mark.
@EmnEm, I enjoyed Sharna’s work with Charlie and Noah, and I hope she’ll get her mojo back and we’ll start to see that kind of work again.
I haven’t settled on a favorite (to win) yet, but there are a lot of couples I find very appealing. So right now I’m supporting my sentimental favorites (Doug and Karina).
@EmnEm I don’t think the producers have to pimp Antonio for a few more weeks at least. And I really don’t think Val and Peta will try to insure Sharna a win by intentionally doing less that they can to win. I think both of them would LOVE to have a second MB, of course they would, who wouldn’t. The only way they’ll promote Sharna for the win is if they aren’t also in the finals, imo.
A bit OT: Amy Purdy was on Say Yes to the Dress last night. She looked absolutely beautiful and so happy. I’m so happy for her!
Is it wrong that the mental image of Doug and Karina dancing a heartfelt waltz to a song sung by Kermit the Frog just seems ridiculous to me? I don’t think I’ll be able to take it seriously unless it’s the band performing the song live or something.
Bia, I’m pretty sure I read that Andra Day will be performing Rainbow Connection.
I can’t remember who asked about Cheryl but one she is under.contract with another network. Two on that Tyler Henry show she talked alot about how difficult it was to quit. She went onto say she is on a new path and isn’t going back. She seemed pretty adamant.
I don’t really understand why in a week that gives the opportunity to open up emotionally about difficult times in your life and trying to overcome them (like Bindi’s, Carlos’ and Tamar’s MMY dances), Mischa decided to do a Samba about partying? (I don’t really remember anyone else ever doing a Samba for Most Memorable Year even though there have been happy dances about happy occasions) Even if the story is about her struggles the dance won’t be and noone will connect it with it so it’s a missed opportunity for people to connect with her…
@Geri – I remember Kirstin Cavalleri and Jack Wagner both did Samba’s for their MMY dances and they both were eliminated THAT week.. so that’s interesting. But on the flip side, so did Zendaya and Roshon Fegan and they did pretty well.
I wouldn’t say Mischa doing a Samba is a missed opportunity though. I think it’s good that she’s doing a fun, party dance because the main criticism she’s been getting from people is how dull, uninterested and boring she is. Doing a Samba is the complete opposite of all that so if she ends up doing at least a half-decent job and projects to people that she’s having some fun others will enjoy that and she’ll go out on a high note (cause i don’t see her NOT leaving tonight). However, I do think she would’ve fared better with a Waltz or Contemporary, not so much because of her hard story but because I feel like those are dances more suited for her than a Samba.
I personally enjoy some fun dances in a week full of slow dances that sometimes make me tear up. It’s a good balance, so I’m thankful for Mischa, Marla and Paige to be giving us a little something different tonight 😛
I’ll be interested to see which year Doug picks, since “Rainbow Connection” fits two ways (one to his son Dougie, who has autism, and the other to his “Hail Flutie” pass that won him the Heisman Trophy that year).
@EmnEm – A huge part of me really liking Chelsea Kane’s Samba in the finale was because of “Hip Hip, Chin Chin” too. That song is, just like “Sing Sing Sing” is to Quickstep and “Espana Cani” is to Paso Doble, the single best song to dance a Ballroom Samba for me.
On another note, I hope they will be performing the routines on full length of 1 minute 30 seconds tonight.
According to Mischas blog, she is dancing the Foxtrot. Not the samba. Interesting….
Looks like a good week in store with some really great comments above. Particularly looking forward to Wanya’s first Ballroom dance, Kim’s nostalgia with Sasha’s creativity, Doug’s sentimentality, Paige’s Paso, and anything Nyle.
Opps, meant to include Marla in the above as well as I’ve been enjoying her and that song. And, off putting pimpage aside, I am curious to see what Val comes up with for Ginger. Could be a good opportunity for them.
On a side note, isn’t this the first “Memorable Year” theme without a Rumba?
@Matt – It’s actually the second one. Season 17 didn’t have any Rumba’s either. I feel like Contemporary is slowly taking Rumba’s spot for most used dance during MMY-Week.
“Party in the USA” as a Foxtrot? Sounds weird. Could it be possible Mischa made a mistake and wrote the wrong dance in her blog? Either way, if it is a Foxtrot, it would be waaay better for her than a Samba.
I remember Val and Janel went 1st on MMY Week and they coasted by with a full set of 9’s. We’ll see if Ginger has the same luck but me doubts it. I can already picture Carrie Ann and Bruno saying they want more from Ginger – and so do I. She hasn’t been performing to her full potential in my opinion but then again that’s mostly because of her pro.
PS: I had no idea Disney Week was already next week and Nyle is saying he and Peta will be doing Tarzan. I’m so excited 😀
Just to be clear; by saying that everyone is discounting Mark, that does mean that no one is taking notice of or giving him well-deserved credit for his amazing choreography and creativity. Is that right?
Mark and Paige are dancing seventh tonight! George confirmed it on the Twitter. 🙂
Perfect…!!!… Hopefully, they will get 10 10 10 (a perfect 30) or at least close to it. I think that Paige and Mark are definitely worthy of a higher score…
What are you responding to, CH? Or who?
Sorry Court… Got excited for a second… I was responding to # Moksh…
Given the stinginess we’ve seen from the judges in weeks 1-2, I don’t see the “10” paddles coming out until week 5, at the earliest. We haven’t even seen the “9” paddle make an appearance yet.
Did you guys see the picture that Paige just posted on Instagram from her camera blocking? It looks like her Paso is choreographed based on a MMA fight (complete with the ring and all) *and* the person dancing opposite her in that rehearsal photo is most definitely Mark!
#CH You’re so me! Even I am expecting the same scores but Courtney is right on her part. Her Salsa could have easily gotten a 9 last week but the judges restricted it to 8, even Bruno and CAI (Len I know what he is going to be up to), so I guess top score for the coming episode would be in the range of 25-27 (both inclusive) and nothing more than that.
We can just hope for the best for Paige and Mark!
^^Oops typed too fast- by “Instagram” I meant “Twitter”- sorry!
I think we’ll see a 9 tonight. I have a sneaky suspicion it might go to Jodie as well. Ballroom dance with a live singer. All set up for a standing ovation.
