This past weekend, Dancing With The Stars Karina Smirnoff and former Season 9’s partner Aaron Carter were united for a dance event at the Mohegan Sun. It’s great to see them back together again. Check them out.

PureDWTS Season 21 Cast Possibility: Nick Carter?

Gonna preface this with my usual “take this with a grain of salt” warning, as it seems like this might be reeeealllly early for the pros to be meeting their partners – but as it is a slow news day and I did find this rather curious, I will go ahead and share.  Special thanks to CM for the heads up on this.

Looks like Nick Carter of The Backstreet Boys just started following Sharna out of the blue – maybe he just met her at a party in L.A., maybe he just thought she looked like a cool person to follow, who knows…but the timing is interesting.

nicksharna

Also interesting? This Instagram post from Sharna yesterday, without any sort of context:

Best.Day.Ever ?

A photo posted by Sharna Burgess (@sharnaburgess) on

Maybe Sharna was just having a good day, maybe she had just gotten word that she was going to be a pro again this season…who knows. But just seemed rather coincidental that both of the above events would happen on the same day.

I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch for Nick to do the show – he’s from the only major boy band that DWTS has yet to cast from, plus his brother Aaron did the show back in 2009. And from the looks of the Backstreet Boys’ schedule, he’s free and clear until May of 2016. I think he’d be fun to watch, and if Sharna is, indeed, his partner – I think they’d be a good match.

Thoughts?

ETA: Apparently this screen shot is making the rounds among the Nick Carter fans – some guy named John is claiming on Instagram that Nick’s wife, Lauren, confirmed the other day on the set of his movie that he IS doing DWTS this season.  Take it with a big grain of salt, as it’s basically some random guy claiming he heard something (and his IG account is conveniently private) without anyone being able to verify it.  But who knows – maybe we’re not as crazy here at Pure as some seem to think we are 😉 nickondwts

Dancing with the Stars Season 19 – “What do you mean I’m a ringer??” Update

Introduction

A couple of seasons ago, I created a set of criteria with which to measure the benefits some dancers on DWTS have compared to the other dancers. That is, ringers versus non-ringers. I attempted to be as logical and scientific as possible, although it’s impossible to remove all subjectivity from the issue. But it’s far better than simply saying “so and so isn’t a ringer, IMO”. In your opinion? If your opinion is purely subjective with no effort at logical or rational thought, then what good is it??

No good at all, actually. The original series sprung from an effort to debunk the old, tired and stupid claim that the only reason Derek does well is because he gets all the good partners and no one else gets them. Utter BS, of course. It would be a good idea to read that series before starting this one as I can’t guarantee that I’ll include all the same rationale this second time around and I don’t take well to discussing a subject with someone who is so rude as to not read the blogs. I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Pro Derek Hough Dishes On Music, New Movie, And Dancing With The Stars (Video)

Pro Derek Hough was a guest on Access Hollywood today. He runs through his partners (“wives”) on his 10 seasons with Dancing With The Stars. They ask if the pros have any input for who they get as partners which they don’t (but, he may make suggestions). Also, he always tries to have other projects going to keep dancing refreshing. Derek also talks of making music again and his new movie coming out which he gets to see for the first time this week. Great interview for the Hough Addicts like myself. Lots more at Pure Derek Hough. Stay tuned as our Miss Princess Heidi will be making some big updates there soon on Derek’s recent Dizzy Feet weekend and more.

Bristol Palin Explains Why She Decided To Dance Again On Dancing With The Stars

E Online was at the ABC Press Tour. They report Dancing With The Stars contestant Bristol Palin was swamped by the press with questions for why she decided to dance. Bristol wants to provide for her son. She also said the press is going to talk about her no matter what, so she might as well dance again. More below and at the link.

Bristol received the bulk of questions during the press conference and grew increasingly defensive about her reasons for doing another reality show, ending the press conference by quipping, “Do I like to provide for my son? Yes, I do.”

Bristol repeatedly blamed the press’ overbearing nature as her prime reason for doing DWTS, saying (repeatedly), “God provides opportunities for me…The press is going to be talking about me no matter what, so I may as well be having fun.”

When asked if she believes she has made herself more of a target by doing reality TV instead of quietly going home to raise her son after the 2008 election, Bristol replied, “Like I said before, this is a fun gig. I’m not whining; I’m not complaining about anything. I’m gonna go out there and I’m going to have fun. You guys, the media, you will talk about me whether I’m in my little Alaska life or doing this.”

The reporters on hand were mostly members of the Television Critics Association, and when someone asked if there was any aspect of the show coverage Bristol does like, Bristol gave more of the same: “God provides opportunities for me. This is an amazing opportunity to for me. I get to work with awesome people. And it’s a positive, active show. It’s going to be awesome.”

At one point, the conversation turned to politics and Palin’s beliefs on homosexuality (“What will you think if you get a gay partner?”), to which Pamela Anderson immediately exclaimed, “I love gays!”

“I like gays,” Palin said. “I’m not a homophobic. And I’m so sick of people saying that. Just because I’m for traditional marriage doesn’t mean I’m scared or anything of anyone else. I don’t hate anybody. You know, people are going to make up stuff about me no matter what and…whatever. I’m going to go dance and I’m going to have fun and I’m just going to go have fun on this show. It’s not about politics. It’s not about traditional marriage and anything like that. It’s just about dancing and it’s going to be fun and that’s all I have to say about it.”

Oh boy, I’m not sure I’m ready for this again? HEIDI HELP!!! 😯

Heidi: What an idiot. So everything is everyone else’s fault. You’re always misquoted. You never say or do anything wrong. Everything is the media’s fault.  Or God’s.  I can’t say anything else without getting hate mail from wackado’s so I think I’ll leave it at that. 🙂  Oh, but if Derek gets her?? This will be the first season I don’t vote for him.

Vogue: I think she must be a glutten for punishment or this is her only way of keeping herself out there. She likes the attention more than not any attention at all.

Kirstie Alley, Val Chmerkovskiy, and Aaron Carter Discuss New DWTS All Star Cast (Videos)

So as many of you might have watched, Good Afternoon America announced the new cast for the new Dancing With The Stars All Star Season. Below is some videos from their official site. They do a little spread on each celebrity contestant. Kirstie Alley calls in. She’s excited, scared, and has no idea who she’s dancing with. Val Chmerkovskiy and Aaron Carter join in to talk about the line up. Val thinks Emmitt Smith is the front runner right away for the work ethic he has, his mentality, and also that he is an athlete. Val is excited about everyone who is returning. Aaron thinks the front runner is Gilles Marini and especially if he’s paired up with his former partner Karina Smirnoff for the “chemistry” they’d have together. Aaron thinks it’s all about chemistry which equals having respect for one another, being able to get along, and listening to one another. Great spread today. It’s great seeing Aaron again too and his interesting perspective. More below….

DWTS 14, Week 7 – Who’s Got the Edge in the Team Dances?

So we now know for sure what the team dances are (paso doble & tango) and who’s on what team (Katherine, Maria, Jaleel, & Roshon vs. William, Donald, & Melissa).  So who’s gonna win? Let’s see how they stack up.  I looked at several factors that could come into play in helping to determine who has the advantage – experience level of the pros on each team, experience level of the couples on each team, number of couples on each team, what dance each team has, and other miscellaneous factors that may affect the outcome.  So let’s get to it!

Pro Team Dance Experience

Derek: 6 wins (seasons 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13), 0 losses, 0 ties; average team dance score: 27.5
Cheryl: 4 wins (seasons 7, 8, 10, 13), 1 loss (season 11), 0 ties; average team dance score: 26.8
Kym: 2 wins (seasons 7 & 9), 1 loss (season 13), 1 tie (season 12); average team dance score: 25.75*
Maks: 2 wins (seasons 11 & 13), 1 loss (season 10), 1 tie (season 12); average team dance score: 25*
Chelsie: 1 win (season 8), 0 losses, 1 tie (season 12); average team dance score: 25*
Mark: 0 wins, 2 losses (seasons 8 & 11), 1 tie (season 12); average team dance score: 23.67*
Peta: 0 wins, 0 losses, 0 ties (never been in a team dance); average team dance score: 0

*Since there were 4 judges’ scores given for the team dances in season 12, I subtracted Donnie Burns’ score from the two team dances in that season in order to normalize with all of the other seasons, which only had 3 judges’ scores.

Team Tango: I’d say their biggest advantage is having Derek – the guy’s undefeated, so he’s clearly figured out the formula for what works and what doesn’t work in the team dances.  Say what you will about team dances being a product of all the pros working together (I agree to some extent), but the only common denominator in every single team dance win has been Derek, regardless of what other pros have been on each team with him, what the dance style has been, etc.  Many of the pros have also gone on record as saying that they tend to let Derek take the lead when choreographing the group portions of the team dance, so I’d say he probably has a lot to do with the success of each of the teams he’s on, as the judges do tend to really harp on synchonization, interesting formation patterns, and overall performance quality in the group portion of team dances.  I’d say Kym is an asset as well – she’s been on a team with Derek twice before (one of those times was another team tango), and when she hasn’t been on a team with him, she’s managed to tie once, and the 1 team dance she lost was not really all that bad, IMO.  I don’t really know if Chelsie is battle-tested enough to say whether she’s good in the team dance or not – but I don’t get the impression that she is one to make waves, so she will probably be very cooperative and easy to get along with.  My only concern is Mark – he seemed rather volatile in the team dance rehearsals in season 12, and seems to have a penchant for very flashy, high-energy, in-your-face choreo…which doesn’ t always translate well in the team dances.  I’m hoping that he lets Derek take the lead on the group choreography, and really focuses on giving Katherine some good, solid solo choreography this week.

Team Paso: While I think they don’t have quite the same edge that Team Katherine does, I don’t think they’re super weak, either.  Both Cheryl & Maks have been on teams with Derek before, so they’ve probably at least picked up a few tricks and strategies – I would say Maks is probably the stronger choreographer, judging from what I’ve seen him do in other team dances and pro dances.  The big question mark here is Peta – we just don’t know how she’s going to fare, since this will be her first team dance.  I doubt she’s going to suck at it (I don’t think anyone has really sucked at it – except maybe the unfortunate souls in the team mambo in season 8…), but it may take her a little longer to really get a feel for how the team dances work and what to do for Donald’s solo.  I think she’s probably going to rely on Cheryl & Maks for the group choreo, and isn’t likely to make any sort of big fuss, since she’s the new kid on the block.

Who has the edge in pro experience? I’ve got to give this one to Team Tango – they’ve got the only undefeated pro, and each of the other pros has been in at least 2 team dances. Read more..
