Derek Hough talks Lifts, Rumba and Jennifer Grey in New TV Guide Blog

We’ve had lots of whiners comments about why Derek didn’t get docked for the lift he did in his rumba with Bindi, and comments about the lack of rumba content – mainly just for Derek although a lot of other couples had the same issues (no surprise there, right?) – and Derek does us a favor and explains what HE was told when preparing for the dance. And he shows, once again, that he’s pretty well connected in Hollywood. 🙂 From TV Guide:

I texted Jennifer immediately afterward and she was like, “Love it! That was great!” Kenny Ortega also texted me and was super pumped about it. I’m glad they both loved it. We really tried to honor the original dance as much as we could. I know some of you were worried that we would be docked for a lift in the rumba since that’s not allowed, but we all had a lot of leeway in our choreography because it was about paying tribute to these iconic dances. We did some rumba in the beginning, but the dance was by no means a rumba! We were all told the rules were going to be loose so we didn’t have to be concerned about that. Now you may be wondering why they didn’t just give us a mambo since that’s the dance in the movie, but I’m kinda glad they gave us the rumba. We got it over with!

This week, we have the Argentine tango. We’re dancing to “Cry Little Sister.” With Bindi, we’ve seen the sweet side of her obviously. This is gonna be the fierce, sexy, strong side of her. I’m excited for everyone to see that. She totally gets into character and I think it’s gonna be good.

I suspected he would rather have had the other song, which makes me very curious about how the songs were handed out. Bindi, as the person with the highest cumulative score, should have had first choice. We’ll have to wait and see how that went down. Or how they portray it went down, in any case.

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Paula Abdul, Kenny Ortega, Nicole Scherzinger, And More Attend Julianne and Derek Hough’s MOVE Live On Tour

What a night for Dancing With The Stars Derek and Julianne Hough at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, California last night! It was a packed house for their Move Live On Tour! What’s more, friends and fellow celebrities came out to support them….Nappytabs, Kenny Ortega, Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger, Elizabeth Berkley, Nina Dobrev, Maria Menounos, Tommy Chong, Shirley Ballas, Brooks Laich and more! Elizabeth Berkley tweeted that it was “the most amazing night of incredible dance” and “what a gift to witness such extraordinary talent.” To read more on the night, see Pure Derek Hough here and here. Below are some high quality photos from the night as well. To see more photos, see Getty Images.

Dancing With The Stars Derek Hough Receives 2014 GLSEN Inspiration Award

Give it up for Dancing With The Stars Derek Hough! PureDWTS Season 18 End-of-Season Awards – Which Guest Judge Was the Best?

So now that the voting is closed on our biannual end-of-season awards, it’s time to reveal the results – and for me and my fellow mods to weigh in 🙂 So let’s get to it…

bestguestjudge

Courtney: As I think most of us suspected, Kenny ran away with this one – he seemed to be the one guest judge this season that everyone seemed to universally agree was both qualified to judge and would actually give good feedback.  And he did – my only complaint is that they held off until week 9 to have him judge, and I think by that point the feedback the judges give is almost universally positive and you rarely hear much actual criticism…so I think I would have liked him a bit earlier in the competition when he could have given some really good advice, and I wish they would have saved one of the softer judges (like Robin) for the week 9 gushing and parade of 10’s.  I actually voted for Ricky on this one, because I kinda dug that he seemed to refuse to conform to the judges’ predetermined rhetoric for each couple – the judges may have been raking Charlie & Sharna across the coals for their paso, but Ricky wasn’t afraid to say “I see what you’re saying, but I totally loved it! TEN!!!!” Not at all surprised at who ended up at the bottom of the list – although I do find it a bit funny that Redfoo beat out Donny 😛

Heidi: I’m guessing the Donny fans have learned their lesson about this site and aren’t darkening our doors anymore. Although, congrats to them, they are no longer the worst fan group to bug the shit out of us. 🙂 Kenny Ortega has CRED. Even the pros were thrilled to be dancing in front of him…and he has the ability to give them jobs, if they play their cards right. Hey, maybe he’ll make a Meryl and Maks movie. :::snort::: Although, I will say…the acting was decent. 😉

Vogue: I may be nuts (well, this you already know. lol), but, I threw my vote to Redfoo. Technically, Julianne and Kenny were the best judges, but, Redfoo was so entertaining. He game me some “moments” I won’t soon forget. He brought that “Wooooooo”‘s home and especially for Amy and Derek’s dance for just what I was feeling. What a crack up. I also enjoyed Ricky Martin. He gave Charlie and Sharna a deserving 10 despite whatever the other judges were going on about. So huge kudos to him.

Vote for Your Favorites in the PureDWTS Season 18 End-of-Season Awards!!!

So against my better judgment, I decided to resurrect these awards, after skipping them for a few seasons 😛 Just figured that everyone had some pretty strong opinions about this season, and would want to discuss (or argue…) about some of the finer aspects of this season…so here’s the gist:

1.) You get one vote per award category.

2.) If you don’t see your first choice listed, you are able to write-in votes for SOME of the categories – but here’s my strong words of caution: seldom do write-in votes win these awards, so I would encourage you to only write-in if you feel really strongly about something; if your write-in vote is grossly misspelled, doesn’t make sense, or cannot be understood, I’m throwing it out – I’ve had too many seasons of weeding through pages upon pages of write-in votes that were only slightly above jibberish in terms of clarity.  And if you decide to be a little jerk and answer questions like “Which was the best dance of the season?” with “All of Meryl’s dances!!!” or “tie between Meryl’s tango, Candace’s contemporary, Amy’s Argentine tango, and Charlie’s jazz”, I’m throwing out your vote.  Pick ONE – like all of the people courteous enough to actually follow the rules of this poll.

3.) Polls will be up for ONE WEEK – so get your votes in NOW. Read more..

Better known as Charlie.

Could Sharna Burgess And Charlie White Have a Michael Jackson Song For American Icons Dance?

Could Sharna Burgess and Charlie White have a Michael Jackson song for one of their dances for American Icons week? As you know from recent interviews, Sharna has mentioned being really excited about one of their songs. What’s more, her boyfriend/choreographer/dancer Paul Kirkland and another dancer named Ferrari Kid are helping them as you can see in a new instagram below that was captioned with “Just finished an amazing rehearsal with @charlieawhite @sharnaburgess @paulkirkland01 incorporating some #jookin to make the recipe complete!”. Note that both Paul Kirkland and Ferrari Kid helped to choreograph and danced in the recent Michael Jackson “I Heart Music Awards” production of “Love Never felt So Good“. Sure makes one go Hmmmm especially since Kenny Ortega is going to be a guest judge too….or do you think something else is up? NOTE: This is a prelude post too! Stay tuned! Courtney has a new Song Prediction/Wish List Post coming up a little later!! 😉

Derek Hough Honored at the Emmy Choreographers Panel

Normally I don’t respond to petty complaints from fans when their favorite (who, ironically in this instance, is also MY favorite) isn’t getting the coverage on this site they think their favorite deserves. Come on, people. I also normally wouldn’t go backwards in time to pick something up that I neglected to cross post the first time around (I think – not even sure). But in this instance, I saw a tweet this morning that made me decide that I needed to go back to this topic. As a Derek fan, this actually brought a little tear to my eye. 🙂

Back on November 1st, the Emmys had a program called “The Choreographers – Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”. They had invited Derek but, prior to getting injured, he had a conflict. Once he got injured they added him back to the panel, which also included Nappytabs, Dancer/Fred Astaire’s Partner Barrie Chase, Robyn Astair, Marguerite Derricks, Keith Young, and Fred Tallakesen. Paula Abdul and Kenny Ortega were the hosts. Very nice words about Derek from Paula and Kenny (who told Derek that he would push his way to the front of the line to work with Derek on a Major Motion Picture). I’ve put just the Derek portion below, but if you want to watch the whole thing, which includes several clips of little seen Fred Astair dances – I never knew he had a TV show! – you can find it at the Emmy’s web page. It’s about an hour and a half long, but it’s pretty interesting.

Jennifer Grey On DWTS, Derek Hough, And Judging Strictly Come Dancing

This weekend, Jennifer Grey is appearing on the UK version of the show as a stand-in judge for Len Goodman. She’s hopes to “bring honesty” to the panel. In a new promo interview with the BBC, Jennifer talks of what it was like to do Dirty Dancing and how Patrick Swayze got her the role. She also speaks about doing Dancing With The Stars in the US and a little of what she went through with her partner, Derek Hough. Great article. You can read more in a take from Film News below.

Jennifer says despite her starring role in Dirty Dancing, she is not a natural performer.

“Derek was frustrated because I’m not a dancer. I was only a weekend one. I put on Michael Jackson on my boom box,” she smiled. “I was a lover of dance.”

Jennifer confessed the show was hard work. The Golden Globe-nominated star says rehearsals were gruelling and often left her feeling vulnerable.

“It’s about embracing the opportunity and facing your fears. You have to dig so deep,” she recalled.

“Each week I didn’t feel ready. I could not get through a dress rehearsal without crying or some sort of drama. It’s very intense.”

Jennifer is appearing on the UK version of the show this weekend as a stand-in judge. The 51-year-old hopes to bring honesty to the panel of Strictly Come Dancing.

“I’m a really judgemental person!” she laughed.

“I have so much compassion, and I’m going to be really honest.”

Picture above is of Jennifer and Kenny Ortega at the 2011 Rising Stars Gala on Oct. 29th. You can view more pictures of her at this event at Zimbio.com.
