PureDWTS Season 28: Artem Talks About His Dismissal from DWTS on the Bellas Podcast

Up until now, we’ve really only gotten to hear Bobby and E! weigh in on Sharna’s dismissal from the show, and have only a few existential Instagram posts from Nikki Bella (and maybe a few subtweets) to tell the story of Artem’s dismissal.  So as we had previously heard, Artem was indeed a guest on girlfriend Nikki and her twin sister Brie Bella’s podcast this week, and a good portion of the episode was dedicated to Artem telling his side of the story – you can listen to the Bellas podcast on Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, etc., but I’ve linked to this specific episode on Apple.  No transcript today, kids – the segment is long: it starts at the 4:29 mark and ends at the 19:25 mark. It’s a good listen, though…

There’s two key things that got mentioned that I want to talk about. First, Nikki pointed out that all of the pros have basically been unemployed (with a few side projects, of course) since March, when the tour wrapped – and as we know from our research about how the pros’ contracts work, the pros only get paid if they actually get cast on a season. So while the pros on DWTS do get paid relatively well, I could see how being suddenly let go (after not working for nearly 6 months!) could create some definite stress, and I feel for Artem, Sharna, and the troupe in that respect – my office is currently operating amidst whispers of layoffs due to money mismanagement higher up in the company, and we’re all trying to sock as much money away as possible, lest we fall victim. Imagine getting laid off and NOT seeing it coming – or worse, turning down other work on the assumption that you are returning to the show, and then getting cut 😯  I’m sure there’s a clause in their contracts that spells out that they aren’t guaranteed a position from season to season, but if I were Artem or Sharna (Sharna in particular, since she just recently renegotiated her contract), I would at the very least have a lawyer take a glance at their contract to see if they might have grounds to sue for estoppel – particularly if they turned down other work on the assumption that they’d be returning to the show. Then again, if they hope to keep the door open to return in a future season, they best just quietly accept their fate.  That’s the worst thing about all of this: no matter how you dice it, DWTS holds all the cards. They have first dibs on the pros, regardless of whether they’re going to use them or not, and they can string them along for as long as they like and then have no obligation to pay them if they opt not to use them – and oftentimes, they still have the legal right to prevent those same pros from accepting other work, if they choose to.  And if the pros complain? Buh-bye, kiddo – no more DWTS for you ever again.

Second key point: Artem wistfully mentions that dance is all he’s done for the past ~20 years, and now he’s having serious doubts about his skills…and wondering if he needs to reinvent himself and pursue a different career. This clip just breaks my heart:

And Artem, I feel you on the reinvention part – I’m currently in the midst of a reinvention of sorts myself, and I find myself questioning my worth almost daily. Luckily, it seems like both Artem and I have strong support systems in place to remind us that just because others don’t always see our worth, doesn’t mean we aren’t extremely valuable 🙂

Other quick note: the Bellas actually asked Sharna to appear on the podcast as well to talk about her dismissal, but she is currently unavailable at Burning Man 😎 Can’t say I blame her – nothing like a week in the desert with no phone service, no money, no societal expectations, and a lot of drugs to clear your head and give you perspective 😉

Discuss.

Below are press interviews and recaps after Night two of the Dancing With The Stars finale. Lots of new tour talk and note the mention from ABC7 on the Dancing With The Stars “All Sports Edition” coming in the Spring. Too fun…

The 10 athletes set to compete in this spring’s cycle will be revealed at a later date.

It’s no surprise that DWTS would test the waters with a season consisting of all sportsmen and women. Dancing with the Stars Season 25, THE FINAL FINALE (Night 2) – LIVE BLOG

Well, it’s the finale. Time to sit through 2 hours of crap to find out who wins the shiny Mirror Ball trophy. Good luck to all the contestants.

One note – the person dancing last on Night 2 of the finale has won the MBT SEVEN of the last ten seasons.  I’m hoping the comments won’t become an ugly place tonight. None of these contestants deserve that.

Love the opening bit with Len. He’s so funny…and did I see a bit of swag.

Robert!! Yum. But producers…this show is NOT about Val and Maks, so spare me please.

Lindsey being a pep talker in the BTS footage. Frankie too, it appears.

DWTS Season 25, Week 7 – Dancing by the Numbers!

Well, I’ve never seen a more disgusting, egregious display perhaps EVER on DWTS – and that’s really saying something. Of course I’m referring to the judging and scoring of the team dances this past week. Was Team Monster Mash perfect? Of course not. But what about Team Phantom? Were they perfect? HELL NO. What kind of moron actually believes there is a six point difference between the team with the better choreographers and better dancers (and the more difficult, innovative choreography) and the team with…issues. I like all the dancers left, but come ON. Utterly ridiculous. You know, if the judges thought Team Phantom were the better team, fine. Give them a point or two…or even three…higher. But SIX POINTS?? Fucking ridiculous and so very transparent. So how much trouble is Vickie in??

Well, I think it is probably mission accomplished. I’m tempted to go back through the seasons and do an accounting of how often at this point in the season some kind of ridiculous BS occurs in order to save some dancer that the producers need to stick around for a while longer. I bet we would be shocked at how often it happens. In fact, I probably WILL go through and do a post on it. But in the meantime, off the top of my head, the first one I remember is Chelsea Kane and her crazy high immunity points. There have been several since then, but that’s the first one I remember. It’s been several days and I’m still pissed.

Anyway, let’s do a bit of a look back before we look at the numbers for Monday night.  Nikki and Vanessa were both eliminated and they were not at the top of the leaderboard.  In order for Nikki and Vanessa – who were tied with each other – to be eliminated, ALL of the following things had to happen:

  • Drew got 19,700 more votes per million votes cast than BOTH of the, AND;
  • Frankie AND Victoria got 16,400 more votes per million votes cast than both of them, AND;
  • Neither Nikki nor Vanessa could cover the 3,300 votes point spread to pass Terrell, and so on up the leader board.

Now, I’m inclined to think that three people getting that many votes to be safe over two people in the middle of the leaderboard means that those two people were not getting many votes, more than those three people getting a tone of votes. Of course, both things could be true, but we won’t know until it’s all over.  For example, Audrina Patridge got voted out in a “shocking” elimination back in the day – one that both Courtney and I predicted beforehand.  For that to happen, MANY people (five) got more votes than her, including Kurt Warner who got something like 45k more votes per million votes cast; a huge number that hasn’t been beaten since.  BUT, Kurt was then evicted two weeks later, after Rick Fox, who also was below Audrina on the leaderboard. In that instance, it became fairly obvious that no one was voting for Audrina.  Make sense?

So, just because Drew, Frankie AND Victoria all stayed while Vanessa and Nikki were eliminated doesn’t mean that those three are bullet proof and getting a ton of votes.  On the contrary, it’s possible that any one of the three could be eliminated any time now. But will they? Well, check it out:

Terrell is on the bottom, but not by a lot. The problem for Terrell is that we’re down to 6 and my read on the season is that of everyone left, Terrell and Victoria are the two weakest fanbases. And Victoria has a nice cushion – thanks to the aforementioned crap ass team dance scoring. But I’m sure that’s completely legit. :::smirk::: Not.   Anyway, what does Terrell need to be safe?

As you can see, Terrell only needs about 4,600 more votes per million votes cast than Lindsey and 11,700 more votes per million votes cast than Jordan in order to be safe. It can be kinda tricky, what the judges have done here. What I mean is that I think that Frankie and Drew are getting plenty of votes, while Lindsey and Jordan are getting great scores and a good number of votes. The question is, have Lindsey and Jordan been more sustained by scores than they have by votes, or are they getting a ton of votes as well?  I kinda feel like Lindsey has the jump on Jordan when it comes to votes…and I think she has the jump on Terrell as well. She doesn’t need to get more votes than Terrell, she just has to be not getting 4,600 per million LESS. And I don’t think she is – I think she’s every bit as charming as Frankie, with her pixie pig tails, and every bit as fun as Drew. Jordan I’m not as sure about any more – for whatever reason he doesn’t seem to connect as much as Lindsey does.  That said, I don’t think Terrell is covering the spread.

If there is anyone Terrell could beat, I would think it’s Victoria – but I also think she might be out of reach this week.  Terrell would have to get 18,700 more votes per million votes cast than her. That’s a pretty good number at this stage of the competition.

So, to sum it up, Terrell needs ONE of the following things to happen in order to be safe:

  • He needs to get about 4,600 more votes per million votes cast than Lindsey, OR;
  • He needs about 11,700 more votes per million votes cast than Jordan, OR;
  • He needs about 18,700 more votes per million votes cast than either Drew or Victoria, OR;
  • He needs to get about 26k more votes per million votes cast than Frankie.

As much as Terrell is growing on me, I’m hoping he’s not beating anyone above him with the exception of Victoria. Nothing against her, but her partner could use a bit of humble pie, to say the least.

I could go on but I feel that Terrell is the one who will be eliminated this week. My record is crap this season, after being so good last season, so it’s very possible that my read is way off. Expect to see either Jordan or Lindsey (or both) in jeopardy along with Terrell.  If it’s a shocking elimination, I would expect that Terrell would be called safe right away. We best hope that doesn’t happen. If it does, we’ll need to do a post mortem, because these contestants seem kinda close to me and I don’t know who might go if not Terrell.

What do you think?

PureDWTS Season 25, Week 7 – Power Rankings

Greetings from Houston 🙂 I’ve been on vacation since Thursday, and started off bumming around Denver with my sister before heading to hang out at my aunt’s in Magnolia, TX on Sunday.  Happy Halloween, and GO ASTROS!!! 🙂

So the dreaded double elim hit last night, and I think it was kind of a dick move to get both Nikki & Vanessa up there and then go “Surprise! You’re both going home.” Sure, they probably at least had an inkling, but still – dick move, bruh. Can’t say I’m too disappointed to see Vanessa & Maks go – it was getting pretty uncomfortable watching them, and while I think Vanessa was hoping to make it further, I think she may have had a nervous breakdown before long; I get the feeling she’s leaving the show with a bit of a disillusioned, Marilu Henner-esque view of her experience: something she wanted so badly for so long, but it ended up not being nearly as fun as she had hoped. As for Nikki – I had no issues with her, and I do think she was screwed a bit in the grand scheme of this season, but who I really feel for is Artem – for the second season in a row, I think he was unfortunately a victim of circumstance, and his partner was sacrificed in order to keep someone else in the competition longer. Like Mark, he was the only male pro that I thought was making an honest effort to give his partner the best choreo and experience he could – and he still got screwed. I may have seen it coming, but this is one instance I was hoping to be wrong. I would say I hope he gets a contender next season, but given that he’s had two contenders in a row now and STILL gotten shafted, maybe I should start hoping he gets a Bindi or the female equivalent of a Hinch/Grandpa – someone that outwardly isn’t a contender, but ends up just being a natural. I recommend Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was in the audience last week 😎

Halloween week…was Halloween week, and anymore, it doesn’t really seem to vary much from season to season. The team dances as a whole were a scoring/critique dumpster fire, and no amount of ABC posting how “great!” Team Phantom was is going to convince me it’s true – stop trying to gaslight us, ABC.  I guess I’m lightweight curious to see these trios next week, because I think there’s some potential for some showstoppers (Jordan/Lindsay/Corbin, Lindsey/Mark/Kristi, Frankie/Witney/Alfonso…that last one in particular has me particularly curious), some fun, sentimental reunions (Drew/Emma/Rashad), and some head-scratchers (Victoria/Val/Laurie, Terrell/Cheryl/Kelly). To those speculating that Vanessa & Nikki were eliminated because they didn’t have trio members for them – stop. A little birdie told me they actually had quite a few former contestants on-deck that were willing and able to step in, but they were able to be picky & choosy and select the best fit for each couple.  Allegedly, Danica was on the list, which makes sense, given that she’s an L.A. local and a decent dancer – my guess is that she may have gone to Vanessa & Maks, since Maks partnered here during switch week in season 18. If I had to guess (and really, this is just a guess, because I have no idea what other names were on the list), I think Lea may have been a good pick for Nikki & Artem, as she’s L.A. local and a decent dancer. Fun fact: the “bring back a former celeb for the trio” idea was originally kicked around as one of the many lofty ideas the producers had for All-Stars, but with all the flying by the seat of their pants that they had to do that season, it got scrapped.
