Dancing with the Stars Season 28, Week Eight – LIVE BLOG

So, I never did get around to my numbers post this week, dang it. The upshot is, besides S___, Hannah appears to be the only one who can be low on the leaderboard and not be in the bottom two. It’s quite likely that James is the same but he’s not been tested yet. Last week it was Kate’s turn to be in the bottom with Karamo and they were the two low scorers besides S___.

For S___ to be safe, he needed the following things to happen:

  • He needed 14.9k more votes per million votes cast than Kate, AND;
  • He needed 17.4k more votes per million votes cast than Karamo.

In the olden days of DWTS, those were pretty small numbers. Probably not any longer. And he obviously did that – but who knows who else he managed to beat. Here are the remaining numbers:

  • He would have needed22.3k more votes per million votes cast to beat Kel
  • He would have needed 24.8k more votes per million votes cast to beat Hannah
  • He would have needed 29.8 more votes per million votes cast to beat either James, Lauren or Ally

So, vote for your favorites and vote HARD. We’ll see who the low scorers are tonight and if the same thing happens. As of right now, everyone except James, Lauren, Hannah and S___ have seen the bottom two. Hopefully, that is NOT your final four, if you know what I mean.

Dancing with the Stars Season 28, Week SEVEN – LIVE BLOG

Who’s the scariest of the all and will that person be eliminated tonight?? Only if we’re real freakin’ lucky.

T-minus 30 minutes…

Remember to include context when commenting!! Here we gooooo….

So this means that Len is going to bury someone tonight?  This is the best opening we’ve had in a very, very long time. (Bar low) Really good. There was a point where I didn’t know who anyone was. 🙂 Great job.

Michael Rooney did the choreography – props man.  Erin’s dress is gorgeous.  Wow, Jenna and Karamo look amazing! CAI is Maleficent – apropos.

Kel up first with Rocky Horror.  Jive to Time Warp. Doesn’t seem like a good fit but okay.

I don’t get the staging at all but he’s holding up well so far. Got a bit off time for just a moment but recovered well.  All in all, good dance!! Don’t get the outfits either, for that matter. Maybe there is copyright issues?

Len: Terrific way to start off the evening.

Bruno: I love a cult classic. Taken it and reimagined it. Surprising treat.

CAI: (OMG) That was incredible. Off the hook. Tight and clean.

Scores: 9, 9, 9 for a total of 27. New camera people please. Jesus.

Heh. Promo suggests that Len split them into teams. Which means the producers split them into teams. We’ll see.

James and Emma up next with the V. Waltz.  He does have a nice booty.

Emma looks amazing. Beautiful dance so far, love the concept. Excellent job. Particularly liked the ending. 🙂

Bruno: Prince of Darkness. Totally in command. Such a powerful performance. Perfect until he went wrong. James says he slipped on the fog.

CAI: Perfection until the mishap.

Len: Honestly you put a spell on me. Dance was terrific. Lovely movement. Was gonna be a 10 until the incident(s).  Lovely mix of tricks and treats.

He should win this season…I’m just not confident he will.

Scores: 9, 9, 9 for a total of 27.

Ally up next with Tango. Dancing to Sweeter than Psycho. The singer is not doing well.  the Tango on the other hand is pretty good, but her head looks weird…like it’s too far back in the wrong way? Can’t explain it.

CAI: On point. Ridiculously good. What I loved most is you push yourself right up to the edge. Lost focus at one point.

Len: Last week nearly dead, so glad you came back to life with a terrific tango. Lots of proper dancing.  Len noticed the head thing too. It wasn’t just me.

Bruno: Premiere league tango. Full of content done correctly.

She was good, but I suspect she’ll get 9s that I’m not sure I agree with. That said, maybe the judges have wised up.

Scores: 9, 9, 9 for a total of 27. I sense a theme.

I worry for Hannah as she could barely walk on her feet as of yesterday. Eek. Let’s hope for the best.

One of the pros messed up. Not sure how this is Halloween. But she’s doing quite well for someone who couldn’t walk the other day. Over all, kind of a weird theme with weird music. Think she got hosed on that. Her dancing was good, but dang.

Len: Bad girl is a terrific dancer.

Bruno: Nothing scary about that. Most beautiful, friendliest zombie ever.  Things she needs to punch it more.

CAI: Crisp and clear, but agree with Bruno. Something lacking in her performance.  You close off to the dance.

Good lord she is talking so much and so fast!!

Scores: 8, 9, 8 for a 25 out of 30.

NUMBERS UPDATE: So far, there are only about 10k votes between the top 3 and Hannah. Everything is going to hinge on how badly they over score Lindsay’s partner.

Karamo is up next with his Paso to Destiny’s Child.

He’s handling this dance very well, still a tiny bit awkward in places but he’s vastly improved.  And he just gets better the farther he gets into the dance. The make up is AMAZING.

Bruno: The bringer of the apocalypse. Went wrong on the one foot once. Don’t lose the shaping due to the power. Well done.

CAI: Like a sonic boom. You opened  up and let it out.

Len: firstly may I congratulate hair, makeup and wardrobe. Shaping has to be exaggerated, having said that is the attack and he did very well.

Ugh. Boy Bands and Girls Groups next week. Two dances each.

Scores: 9, 8, 8 for a total of 25 out of 30 – tied with Hannah.

Lauren up next with an AT. Doesn’t seem sharp enough but I keep getting distracted by other stuff.  Sorry. Mid-show fade out. Seemed like it was pretty good though.

CAI: Love Halloween. You slipped right there but you went with it and made it a moment.

Len: Not sure what lola wants but saw plenty of what Lennie wants. AT characterization. Sparked off each other. Well done.

Bruno: Can I have a bite please. Your performance was great.

So Lauren gets the pity party two weeks in a row…

Scores: 9, 9, 9 for a total of 27 out of 30.

S___ and Lindsay next.  Monster mash and Frankenstein – pretty slow Jive, of course.

Can’t go wrong with your partner laying down. Oh, I was wrong. 🙂 He’s not moving  at all for half the dance. I mean, literally, feet glued to the floor. He’s pigeon toed when he does move.

Len: This wasn’t super and it wasn’t really natural either. Lacked content, but I must say what I like that you always come out and try the hardest.

Bruno: Monster part was perfect. But the jive was 6 feet behind (I think he means under).  Timing is not your strong suit.

CAI: A dance only your mummies could love. Backsliding this week.

If Len gives him a fucking 7 just for showing up I may throw something at my TV.

Scores: 6, 6, 6 for a total of 18 out of 30. Still too generous.

NUMBERS UPDATE: Made some guesses on the team dances with James’ team doing 26 and Kate’s team doing 24, and Kate getting a 27 in her solo dance. With those numbers, S___ needs 17.5k to get past Karamo, 22.4k to get past Kel/Hannah/Kate and  27.2k to get past the leaders. Scary.

Kate up next with the rumba.

She seemed like she was rushing it there at the beginning, and she’s so somber. I suspect I just saw a mistake but they were only showing her from chest up.  A couple lifts in there, one really obvious at the end of the dance. Not bad, but not fantastic.

Bruno: That was a beautiful and haunting rumba. Capture our attention. Lost a bit of fluidity. Better shoulders.

CAI: There was a tiny mishap, but what I love most is seeing a woman so confident. Lost connection at one point.

Len: Compliments to Pasha. (agreed) What you’ve done, is you’ve inspired other professionals to give proper authentic routines. Not normal amount of confidence, Kate. Stretch legs a bit more. Knockout performance.

Scores: 8, 8, 8 for a total of 24 out of 30.  I wouldn’t have gone that low, although I didn’t care too much for the dance.

NUMBERS UPDATE: Of course, everything hinges on the team dances, but as I said I guessed James team getting a 26 and Kate’s team getting a 24. If that happens, this will be the leader board.

Sean vs. Kate 1.50% 15,000
Sean vs. Karamo 1.75% 17,500
Sean vs. Kel/Hannah 2.25% 22,500
Sean vs. James/Ally/Lauren 2.75% 27,500

This could get spooky. Who knows what will happens. I don’t think Kate is in danger, I think it’s more likely to be Karamo and…someone. But we’ll know.

You mean these lopsided teams were by random draw??? How on earth…

Team Trick is up first. Great costumes. Emma counting. LOL. Celebs doing great on their own.  Well, I thought that was really good!  Seemed like they were mostly in sync, lots of good dancing. Harkened back to what Derek and Mark might have done.

Len: lovely mix of tango, VW all together with fantastic, interesting choreography. Admiration for the celebs. Well done.

Bruno: I loved it as well. Dramatic and elegant. Bringing out the personality.

CAI: I loved it. Matching lines, really powerful. Kudos to Hannah.

Scores: 9, 9, 9 for a total of 27. Awww…Hannah getting emotional.

Team Treat is up with Sweet Dreams by Beyonce.

Love the costumes. Love the start. Very clever way to keep the men from dancing for a long period of time. Very simple choreography. Pretty in sync but not even close to the first team. It just seems kinda slow and low impact. Much stomping by S___.

Bruno: yelling the counts.  Nightmarishly entertaining. Not everyone was always on time, but I really love the effort.

CAI: Love the concept, MVP to Kate for dancing with the women. S___ almost kept up.

Len: Liked the fun of it. You enjoyed. Wonderful entertainment and congratulations.

Scores: 8, 8, 8 for a total of 24 for team treat.  Called that one right on target.

Here we goooooo…..

SAFE: Ally and Sasha

SAFE: Hannah and Alan

SAFE: Kel and Witney

SAFE: James and Emma

SAFE: Lauren and Gleb

SAFE: S___ and Lindsay (fuck)

CAI – Karamo

Bruno – Kate

Len – Kate

Karamo is one hell of a class act.  Going out in classy style. It gives me a sad, though. Stay tuned for a numbers post this week. My preliminary theory is that so few people are voting that S___ is probably out in front, possibly with Hannah and James. The low number of votes is why the bottom two changes every damn week.  Kate was at the bottom of the leader board, with S___ and Karamo, so they’re in the bottom. Hannah was near the bottom last week, yet wasn’t in the bottom two. Hence, I think she’s up there with S___ and likely James.  More later.

Dancing with the Stars Season 28, Week SIX – LIVE BLOG

No idea what to expect tonight, other than a very disappointing elimination.  You?

T-minus 30 minutes…

Remember to include context when commenting!! Here we gooooo….

Okay….that was weird. I don’t get it. What am I missing? Why did James run away? Where was Hannah (and Karamo?)?

Ally going first tonight! CAI talking about how amazing she’s been. Agreed. She’s very cute. I like her.  Quickstep to “Take on Me” by Aha.  Love this song. Remember when the video came out.

They were off time that whole opening. That production was a bad idea. Seems like she gets it back. Liked that run down the center. Mis-step after that big circle thing they did. Should not be 9s, but maybe 8s. Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Season 28, Week FIVE – LIVE BLOG

What do I expect to see tonight?? A bunch of contemporary and jazz dances that are called by another name…like quickstep, samba, V.waltz and foxtrot…and possibly even Paso, although his song actually is a closer fit that many of the others.

What else do I expect to see? A decent dancer sent home instead of the person who should be going home.

T-minus 30 minutes to show time.

Great opening – love how they featured Pasha and Daniella. 🙂  Male pros had the best bit. Loved that…best opening in quite some time.

Sailor up first with Cinderella – nailed that one.  All your expected Disneyification in the packages.

Took a really long time to move across the floor. But  she seems to be doing quite well. Very princess-y VW.

Len: Light and fluffy like a soufle – would have liked more in hold. Makes a comment about her def back next week. Read more..

PureDWTS Season 28, Week 4: Power Rankings

Anyone else lightweight disappointed that we didn’t get to see Leah & Len come to complete fisticuffs on live national television? 😉 They were getting close there in the end, critiquing Karamo’s dance – and Leah (deservedly) called out Len’s suspicious nitpickery and also Carrie Ann’s sham lift policing, and I was generally kind of glad to have her on board last night – there were times when the judges needed reminding that some of these contestants are NOT dancers, they’re all working hard, and there’s no need to be mean or make things personal. Sure, some could argue that she was over-the-top and stole focus from time to time (which, to be fair, is kind of her brand), but given that it was usually when Len was talking, I’m not too upset – that man could use a bit of humbling these days, particularly when he’s going in on men of color for no good reason…

…and speaking of people of color, consider this me raising my eyebrows at bit at the bottom 2’s we’ve had so far. Mary, Ray, Lamar, Kel, Karamo…if Ally ends up there next week, we may need to have a “come to Jesus” (or whatever deity of your choice) meeting. I can understand Ray and Lamar – neither were very good dancers, and Ray had the added stench of a potentially murderous past. But Mary, Kel, and Karamo – they don’t suck, guys.  I partially blame some of the shenanigans from the judges, but is the viewing audience just far more besotted with snowy-white southern girls Hannah and Lauren, a certain conservative firebrand partnered with Lindsay, and family man/former teen idol James? Jury’s still out on Kate – she’s snowy white too, and from a popular TV show, but this show doesn’t tend to hold on long to women over the age of 40 (unless they’re paired with Derek). Just food for thought, y’all…

Anyway, scoring was all over the place last night, and it seemed like some of the viewers on my Twitter timeline were starting to buy into some of the poppycock that the judges were trying to pass off as fair and informed judging.  One thing I want to get very clear: just because the judges rip a dance to shreds does not necessarily mean it’s inherently bad, and just because the judges praise a dance to high heaven does not mean it’s a great dance that’s above reproach.  I would think by now, most viewers would realize that the judges’ job isn’t necessarily to honestly judge the dance they saw – we’ve seen plenty of instances over the years where they were clearly carrying out some sort of agenda, and their comments and scores didn’t align with what we actually saw on the floor. I recall ridiculous nitpicking of fantastic dancers (and eventual champs) like Jordan and Nicole, and over-the-top praise of generally-okay dancers like William Levy, who just so happened to be inking a deal with Univision (an ABC affiliate) around the time he was on the show. To quote Bing Crosby’s character in White Christmas, “Everybody’s working an angle.” When in doubt, remember this: the judges are getting paid to say what the producers want them to. Sometimes that aligns nicely with the truth; other times it’s nothing resembling it. Sometimes, they seem like they actually know what they’re talking about; other times, they seem about as credible as an Instagram model endorsing the Fyre Festival for a fat paycheck 😛

I would say I was sad to see Lamar go, but I’m generally happy that he went out on a high note – that Viennese waltz was his best dance yet, and he really did improve incrementally each week (even if the judges’ scores didn’t really reflect it). I think he was likely ready to go – it was hard for him to remember the choreography, and I got the impression that the judges’ critiques and scores never really stopped cutting him to the quick each week. Was glad Leah was there to throw him a bone with that “7” paddle, and to shame Len and Bruno for throwing up the “4” paddles for the third week in a row. But with Lamar now gone, there’s really only one obvious bit of “low-hanging fruit” still in the competition – and my gut says he’s still got at least a few weeks left in him, unless the judges decide to get really real and start whipping out the “4” paddles again. So that means we’re likely to start losing better dancers starting next week – how will the viewers react to a potential rehashing of last season’s three-ring circus of persistent mediocrity, starring Bones and Grocery Joe? I’d say next week is when we start getting a feel for whether this show even deserves another season… Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Season 28, Week FIVE – Who’s Dancing What…and When??

Disney week. I can’t say it’s my favorite week. Too much production, too much BS.  But since this season has been remarkably low on all that stuff so far, perhaps I will enjoy it more.  We’ll see. Here’s what the press release says we can expect this week:

For the first time in the show’s history, the opening dance number will take place at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, in a pre-recorded segment and will feature the cast on Main Street, U.S.A. and in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle, choreographed by the acclaimed Zach Woodlee (“Grease Live” and “Glee”). During the show, the celebrity contestants and their pros take over the Happiest Place on Earth as they seek inspiration for their dance numbers at Disney California Adventure Park and Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California. One lucky “Dancing with the Stars” couple will even get to travel to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and take the controls of the Millennium Falcon. From thrill attractions to favorite Disney characters and more, this will be a “Disney Night” to remember.

Vying for America’s vote, each couple will dance to a variety of beloved Disney songs including “We’re All in This Together” from “High School Musical,” “Under the Sea” from “The Little Mermaid,” “A Spoonful of Sugar” from “Mary Poppins,” “Beauty and the Beast” from the live-action “Beauty and the Beast,” and “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” from the live-action “The Lion King,” among others.

In addition, a special dance inspired by new song “Into the Unknown” from “Disney’s Frozen II” will be featured. And special looks from Disney+’s upcoming “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” and live-action “Lady and the Tramp” will be shown.

Here’s who’s dancing which dances…ugh, the first contemporary and jazz of the season. At least Ally and Kate got them, along with Kel. This I can live with. 🙂 What do those whining about Hannah’s dances have to say about that, eh?? That argument no longer holds. Sorry not sorry. Foxtrot should suit her, though. James should do fantastic with the Paso. Conversely, Lindsay is going to have to work a REAL miracle this week. I love her, but I hope it doesn’t happen. Sailor should do well, but I worry about Lauren and Karamo with the Samba. Hopefully their partners get it together for them.

ETA: See below for what is apparently the full song list. Hmmm…Hannah was sitting on Aladdin’s rug with Alan, but she also was shown with a light saber.  And she said “someone” is going to be a princess. I would hope her and not Alan. 🙂  But the Aladdin song and the Beauty and the Beast song are both crap for a foxtrot.  Sailor met Cinderella, apparently, which would imply the Cinderella song.  Ally was also in the Beast’s library – and that song would work for contemporary. And they would so totally make Kate do Mary Poppins. And because the producers are who they are, I’m guessing Karamo gets the Lion King song.  My GUESSES are below.

ETA2: Just saw Lauren’s tweet with mermaids in it. 🙂

Ally and Sasha – Contemporary (“Beauty and the Beast” from Beauty and the Beast)

Kel and Witney – Jazz (“We’re All in This Together” from High School Musical)

S___ and Lindsay – Quickstep (“You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from Toy Story 4)

Kate and Pasha – Jazz (“A Spoonful of Sugar” from Mary Poppins)

James and Emma – Paso doble (“He’s a Pirate” from Pirates of the Caribbean)

Hannah and Alan – Foxtrot (“A Whole New World” from Aladdin)

Sailor and Val – Viennese Waltz (“A Dream is A Wish Your Heart Makes” from Cinderella)

Lauren and Gleb – Samba (“Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid)

Karamo and Jenna – Samba (“I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” from The Lion King)

Thanks to R2M in the comments for the heads up on a Disney fansite that claims to have the complete song list – see below:

  • A Whole New World from Aladdin (Zayn and Zhavia)
  • A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes from Cinderella
  • Under the Sea from The Little Mermaid
  • A Spoonful of Sugar from Mary Poppins
  • Beauty and the Beast from Beauty and the Beast (John Legend & Ariana Grande)
  • You’ve Got a Friend in Me from Toy Story 4
  • We’re All in This Together from High School Musical
  • I Just Can’t Wait to Be King from The Lion King (2019)
  • He’s a Pirate from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Pure DWTS Season 28 Week 4 – Interviews, Recaps, Scores, Photos, And Extras

What another great show last night!!! Once again, Ally and Sasha were my favorites. I loved Gleb & Lauren, James & Emma, and Sailor & Val too!!! Also, applauds to Leah Remini on her guest judging and mixing things up. In case you missed the show, don’t miss reading how it all went down minute by minute in Miss Heidi’s Live Blog post. Court’s new Power Rankings will be published soon too. So, be on the look out.

Dancing with the Stars Season 28, Week FOUR – LIVE BLOG

Well, folks, here we are at week four and the two worst dancers are still with us.  If you could be so kind as to VOTE such that one will be eliminated sooner rather than later, I would greatly appreciate it. I think you know which one. 😉

If you have some time to kill before the show starts, you can read Courtney’s power rankings.  I didn’t do a numbers post this week – seemed like it would be…redundant. If another good dancer is in the bottom, I may do a numbers post just so I have a place to rant.  Anyway, T-minus 30 minutes to show time. Don’t be surprised if I’m a little late – got small children to play with. 🙂

How is it that it went from 91 on saturday to 60 today?? Yeah, I know, Climate change – but I feel a bit robbed of fall. Hopefully the rest of the week is a bit better.

Leah is looking great! Funny as ever.  Len is looking a little red.

“Hey look ma I made it.” Eh. Bruno cha cha-ing out in front of everyone.   Hey, did they wax the opening number to that song? Why? Two fewer stars and they’re afraid of the show running long? Read more..
