PureDWTS Season 21, Week 1 – Power Rankings

At the risk of making a pun at Victor’s expense, after tonight – I believe we have a horse race on our hands, kids 🙂 Literally, seems like 5 (possibly 6) couples gunning hard for the top spot…and I don’t think it’s going to be an easy win for anyone.  Kinda nice to not have a firmly predetermined feel for who’s gonna win after the first night.

Other odd & assorted thoughts and observations from this evening: Bruno appears to be the “new Len”, as he’s now the nitpicking stickler and not nearly as wild and flamboyant as he once was.  Bit of a buzzkill, and not sure it feels natural 🙁 Giving quickstep as a week 1 dance is kind of a crock – so Tamar and Paula, you both have my sympathy. Between Paula, Gary, and Hayes’ annoying brother Nash – I think Tom and the Muppets in the editing booth are going to be kept on their toes all season. And ho-lee-crap, Peanut Rademacher, aka the coolest celeb offspring ever to grace the DWTS ballroom, was back tonight after a 2.5 year hiatus…sitting in row 2, stage right, snacking on something while sitting next to Ingo…nonplussed as ever about the show he was watching. 😎 Read more..

Pure DWTS Season 21 Premiere Video Chat – Predictions

We decided to try something new this year. At the last minute I invited people who follow @puredwts on Twitter to join me on a new video platform called Blab. It’s a great way to get up to 4 people’s video streams in a chat to talk about whatever topic interests you. In our case, we talked about the premiere of Dancing with the Stars. You can see our DWTS Blab on their site or in the embedded video below:

It will be fun to look back at our predictions at the end of the video and see how we did. Also, excuse the start. We were still trying to figure out the best way to do a Blab. We’ll keep learning as the season progresses. Plus, hopefully we can get some of the ladies of Pure DWTS to join us.

Thanks to @TeamBindiDWTS21 and @sharnasquad for joining me on camera for the discussion. A bigger thanks to the 400+ people that watched live and the many people who left great comments while we chatted.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on the Blab. Did you like the format? Should we do it again? Would you hop on video if we did it again in the future? If you liked them, when would be the best time for us to do them in the future. Let us know what you think.

Dancing with the Stars Season 21, Week 1 – Monday Night LIVE BLOG

And here we go again, folks. What kind of crazy are we going to get this season? Will Rob Wade pull so much Survivor meets The Bachelor BS that he totally ruins this show forever, or will he try to remember it’s actually a Ballroom dance show, with great dancing and sparkly dresses?? Will he hide cameras in the men’s room to try to get stealth cam of the worst kind? Or will he simply spy on showmancers?? Or create showmances where there aren’t any??

Of course, my preference has always been for a sparkly, fun show with lots of great dancing. The cynical me says we’re going to continue to go farther away from this with each passing season.

T-minus 15 minutes…

That opening was pretty freakin’ COOL, despite being way to Val pimpage at the beginning. They balanced it out with the Emmy winning pro making the transition from street to Stage. 🙂

OMG…I LOVE VICTOR. So CUTE!! Not a lot of rhythm, but oh so charming. I think Julianne just squealed.

But we already have two troupers, a muppet on camera and a swear word by Bruno. Off to an interesting start!

I see how we’re going to work, judges. But really, I like it. No one should be getting 9s.

It just wouldn’t be DWTS without a dance where Val choreographs a walk down the stairs and the pimpage isn’t rampant. Oh, and of course they gave him the great dancer. Yes, I’m going to KEEP saying this until people pay attention. It’s not Derek who gets pimped.

I see Keo choreographed himself some nice dancing. But for Chaka,, not so much.

Oooo…harsh.

So do I understand that we’ve gone from having no elimination until week 3 to having a double elimination next week? Jesus, people, get it together. You’ve been producing this show for more than 10 years now. You’re trying to hard to be different that you’re royally screwing up. Keep it simple, stupid.

Hayes is oddly charming…I kinda like him! He’s a cute little boy. WAY too much troupe usage. I have a feeling that the troupe usage is Mandy Moore’s influence. Hate it. Hope Derek doesn’t go there.

Yeah, all ya’ll saying “poor Emma”?? Yeah.

Andy was pretty good…but I think the real test with him will be next week. As it is with all of them. But I don’t see him as the fabulous get that everyone was upset about early on.

These dances are ridiculously short.

Paula did pretty well. Better than I expect. 🙂

I like Carlos and Alexa. Carlos did pretty good, but he had a few shaky spots. The “Married couple” thing could get a little old after a while.

Wow…they were kind to Alexa. She messed up a whole section and it was really obvious. I’m sure it was just nerves. Making her go right after her hubby killed it probably didn’t help.

Come on, Erin. You’re salivating for a fight.

Scores were fair, I think.

Geez, why does Tony always choreograph so delicately for his partners?? That was so low energy and so…slow and delicate.

Holy crap. I thought Bindi might be good, but CRAP! That was amazing. Watch out, Alexa and Carlos.

Oh my lord…I love Gary. Hehehehehe….my eye is spinning.

Alek is just darling and that was a really good (too short) dance. One of the best of the night?? Don’t know about that, but it was very far from the worst of the night.

Nick is hot. That is all.

Nick was as expected – awesome. I still think he’s the (ringer) winner….but there are several people who are NOT going to make it easy for him. At all. Great choreo by Sharna.

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Karina Smirnoff Writes About Dancing With The Stars Season 21 Week 1, Video Included

Below is a take from Karina Smirnoff’s first blog for Dancing With The Stars season 21 at People. She doesn’t hold back on her and Victor Espinoza’s height difference being a challenge, but, she says he is a “sweetheart with the spirit and heart of a champion.” More below at the link.

Dancing with the Stars is always a roller coaster ride, and for this season we are going bigger with everything – which is a lot of fun. We have a huge opening number for the premiere tonight that we shot at Los Angeles’ Hollywood and Highland intersection. So, besides the dances we’ve been figuring out with our partners, there is this other big production number we’ve had to worry about.

This season, I’m partnered with Victor Espinoza. He’s a sweetheart with the spirit and heart of a champion. His story is amazing. He didn’t start out with a lot of means to live on. He moved to America and lived in a barn with horses because he loved them and wanted to become a jockey but didn’t have the means to go to training, and now he has prevailed. He’s a Triple Crown winner. That hasn’t been done in 37 years!

All that said, it’s a big challenge for us to work together because of our height difference. Even if I don’t wear heels, I am still about 4 or 5 in. taller than Vic. And if I put on my famous Latin heels that are practically 4 in. high, we’re looking at an even bigger difference in height.
