PureDWTS Season 28 Cast Rumors & Watchout: Reality Steve Weighs in on the Hannah/Tyler DWTS Rumors

So we didn’t end up finding out the first two celebs for this season on GMA yesterday (wuh wuhhh), and it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen in the foreseeable future – so we probably aren’t getting official confirmation anytime soon on the Hannah/Tyler DWTS rumors.  However, Reality Steve did weigh in on the situation on his weekly recap post…and he had some interesting things to say:

Which now brings us to DWTS stuff. Over the weekend, GMA was announcing on their Twitter account that the first two dancers of the season were going to be announced yesterday on their show. Due the tragic events of this past weekend, they’ve postponed that indefinitely. Speculation immediately began that those first two contestants to be named were gonna be Hannah and Tyler. Not what I heard. From everything I’ve been told, this whole “Tyler on DWTS” was never a thing. He’s not gonna be on it, nor was he ever supposed to be, so this isn’t Gigi related with the latest stories. That’s just people speculating, and I’m here to tell you, at no point had I ever heard Tyler was doing DWTS. Now Hannah on the other hand, I’d be shocked if she isn’t on this season’s cast. I fully expect her to be named at some point. DWTS used to do the whole cast at once on GMA and there’d always be a few names that leaked out early. But now because they couldn’t control those leaks, they announced them 1 or 2 at a time on social media or GMA. I don’t know when Hannah will be part of the announcement, but I expect it. She’s hot right now and it makes sense, so expect her to be part of cast announcements in the future.

Ok, first a bit of clarification: I have no reason to believe DWTS is going to do a rolling cast announcement, a la Strictly or what they did in season 21. I honestly think this “let’s announce two contestants super early” business is just a ploy to try and get people hype for the new season, after the long hiatus and such poor ratings last season. I fully expect a full-size cast announcement sometime in early September on GMA.

As for the rest of it – Steve’s track record with Bachelor DWTS spoilers is good, so I tend to believe him if he says Tyler was never actually an option for this season. And I tend to believe him when he says that Hannah IS a part of this season – she did suddenly move to L.A., after all.  And I tend to think producer Adam following Tyler on Friday evening on Instagram was simply a red herring – or who knows, maybe Adam’s just a fan. As for the mention of Gigi and the “latest stories”, I’m guessing Steve’s referring to this blind item that someone tweeted me, speculating that it could be about Tyler.

I guess I’m not terribly disappointed – really the only reason I wanted him on the show was as a palate cleanser from Grocery Joe, since Tyler can actually dance and isn’t allergic to the full spectrum of human emotion, a la Joe. And apparently the president of ABC is really excited about this season’s cast, so I’m thinking (hoping) there will be other celebs that will make up for it. Then again, if Chris Harrison’s pimping does any good, maybe Tyler will end up on the show after all 😉

PureDWTS Season 28 Live Blog: GMA Announcing the First Two Contestants!!! **POSTPONED INDEFINITELY**

And we begin our broadcast day, friends 🙂 With this announcement (the earliest we’ve ever been given confirmation on a celeb cast member, mind you), I’d say the season 28 cycle has officially commenced!

I know there’s been some skepticism – “Why are they announcing this so early??? Ugh, I hope this isn’t like the announcement mess of season 21!!!” And I get it – that rolling announcement they attempted for season 21 was a dumpster fire. But given that we’re coming off the longest hiatus between seasons in the history of the show (and coming off an almost universally panned season, mind you), I think it’s important that the show get the ball rolling earlier than usual – they’re going to have to start the arduous process of getting fans excited about the show again, and invested in the upcoming season. The longer they lay dormant, the less likely viewers are to tune in – so I fully expect the month of August to be a tad bananas in the DWTS fandom, and I think we may see more cast announcements between now and early September, when they usually reveal the full cast.

As for this announcement – I tend to think (hope) they’ve managed to snag some popular, relevant celebs, and are using this early reveal to whet our appetites for what’s to come. The prevailing theory from the comments on this post is that it’s going to be recent Bachelorette Hannah Brown and her runner-up-cum-second-chance-flame Tyler Cameron, which I think would be a very shrewd choice – as much as we’ve eye-rolled at past Bachelors on DWTS, the most recent incarnation of the show was surprisingly progressive (Hannah shutting down slut-shamey comments from one of her suitors, Tyler C. being a woke, respectful king) as well as scandalous (Hannah’s final pick, Jed, was revealed to have been in a relationship with someone back home during the duration of the show, and apparently had only done the show to “further his singing career”).  Hannah and Tyler are having a moment – a big moment! – and they would likely be a huge ratings draw, as Bachelor franchise fans are invested in whether or not they’ll rekindle their romance. Whether you love The Bachelor franchise, hate The Bachelor franchise, or love to hate The Bachelor franchise, this would be a very good move for DWTS. Plus I think it’s high time that we get another Bachelorette on the show – Rycroft doesn’t count, so we haven’t had one since Trista in season 1 (Kaitlyn Bristowe DWTS drama notwithstanding). I’m also told that Tyler has always wanted to do DWTS, and is possibly-maybe a bit of a ringer…? 😉 Music to my ears, after watching Grocery Joe lumber awkwardly through season 27.

If not Hannah & Tyler, then who else could it be? Again, I go back to it being someone big and possibly a package deal – my only other guess was Gronk and his model/dancer gf Camille Kostek. What are your theories as we wait to find out? 🙂

UPDATE, 7:58 AM EST, 8/5/19: Apparently no mention has been made of DWTS so far on GMA – and the tone seems very somber today, in light of the two mass shootings over the weekend.  Makes me wonder if they’ll still do this announcement…stay tuned…

UPDATE, 8:18 AM EST, 8/5/19: Looks like the announcement got pushed, per this tweet from Ginger…lol. Guess we’ll try this again tomorrow…

Update, 3:01 PM EST, 8/5/19: Sooo…the DWTS announcement may or may not be tomorrow…check out Tom’s response to a fan asking about it.  Then again, I’m not sure that they were even planning on having Tom on GMA for this particular announcement, so it would make sense that he didn’t know anything. We’ll watch again tomorrow, just on the off-chance they do make the announcement…but it seems a bit up-in-the-air at the moment…

Update, 4:43 PM EST, 8/5/19: Kristyn reached out to ABC publicity to ask when the announcement was rescheduled, and was told it was “postponed indefinitely” 🙁 We’ll keep an eye out to see if/when it might come up again, but for now…no news, kids.

PureDWTS Season 28 Cast Rumors & Watchout: James Hinchcliffe Thinks Fellow Indycar Driver Josef Newgarden Should Do DWTS

I’d categorize this one as “there’s a 50/50 chance between this being a complete joke and a legitimate possibility”, given the parties involved 😉

Hinch has said in multiple interviews since his time on DWTS that he’d “love to see Josef Newgarden do DWTS” – I believe he even mentioned it in a Facebook live with Sharna once, and Sharna was onboard with the idea.  Josef’s a fellow Indycar driver (a pretty successful one, too – he won the 2017 Indycar Series Championship), and is considered a sort of Indycar heartthrob – several of the drivers like to joke that he should be a Disney prince or in a boyband. He’s also a goofy guy and doesn’t seem to worry too much about “being cool”, so he’s uninhibited enough to give DWTS a shot, I think.

Well the other day Josef retweeted a gif of himself busting a move on the bricks at IMS (which was actually cropped from a YouTube video of him during the “Harlem Shake” dance craze five years ago), and this is how things went down:

Now while Josef might be kidding (or semi-kidding), I think Hinch is serious – and I think that Josef would actually be a wise casting move on ABC’s part. Charming, attractive, boyish young guy that doesn’t take himself too seriously and isn’t afraid to let loose and give himself over to the experience? That’s practically catnip to DWTS viewers these days (hello, Milo). And given that ABC has time to pin down the next cast (and reeeeallllly needs to focus on getting a quality cast to redeem themselves from the fiasco of season 27), I think they ought to look into Josef – Hinch ended up being wildly popular despite being a relative unknown headed into his season, and Josef is at least semi-well-known.

Thoughts?

PureDWTS Season 23 Cast Rumors & Watchout: Another Racing Driver/James Hinchcliffe, Maybe?

One of the perks of being a lifelong resident of Indianapolis is that you usually have a pretty good ear to the ground when it comes to the goings-on down at the racetrack – I have at least 5 friends whose jobs are directly related to racing, and anything even remotely interesting that happens at the track usually makes it to the local news (even a dog getting loose on the track and delaying practice for 15 minutes…true story).

Occasionally, this connection pays off – as it did a couple weeks ago, when a friend who works very closely with the racing industry (I won’t give any more detail than that, lest I inadvertently get this friend in trouble) mentioned to me in passing that DWTS had been shopping around to cast another racing driver for season 23. Said friend mentioned that they were looking at Indycar, and the name that he/she kept hearing was James Hinchcliffe’s.  Given that Hinch was spotted in the audience this past season (see below), I don’t think it’s entirely unbelievable that the show might be angling to cast him.  Interestingly, James also favorited/responded to some interesting tweets asking if he would do the show – including one of mine:

Pretty cool to be @dancingabc tonight for the live show! Where are you @heliocastroneves !?! #Indycar #DWTS

For those who aren’t familiar with Indycar or are asking “So why would DWTS cast him?”, let me give you a crash course (no pun intended…ok, maybe a little) in Hinch: he’s Canadian, he’s basically the face of Indycar right now, he has a podcast, he has his own beer, he was on Family Feud recently, and the dude’s hilarious.  Charisma for DAYS. Oh, he also almost died in a crash last year and has made a recovery that is nothing short of miraculous. And with Indycar experiencing a resurgence in popularity in the past year, while NASCAR continues to decline in viewership, and the with the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 making the news? He’s got relevance. So to recap: big personality? Check. Relevance? Check. Amazing backstory? Check.  Even if this is the extent of his dance ability heading into the show, who the hell even cares? I’d probably laugh my ass off just listening to him read the phone book. 😛

Schedule-wise, it might be a bit of a challenge at first – the Indycar season doesn’t end until September 18 (in Sears Point, California…not too much of a trek from L.A.), so his partner might have to do some traveling with him prior to the start of the season and for the first week of the season; interestingly enough, the penultimate race of the Indycar season is on September 4 in Watkins Glen, New York…last year’s fall cast announcement was on September 2 on GMA, in NYC. See what I’m getting at here? 😉 For what it’s worth, the 2007 Indycar season didn’t end until September 9, and the season 5 cast announcement was on August 29…so Helio was in a similar position and had to rehearse with Julianne concurrently with the Indycar season. Ditto for the All-Star season – cast was announced on July 27, Indycar season didn’t end until September 15, season 15 premiered on September 24. So a bit of overlap between the seasons doesn’t necessarily negate the possibility of him doing the show. It’s also worth mentioning that Michael Waltrip had quite a bit of overlap with the NASCAR season when he did season 19.

If, for whatever reason, they opt not to cast Hinch (or he declines), there’s still some other casting possibilities within Indycar – you might remember that Tony Kanaan was a rumor a few years back, and nothing really came of it; he’s still very much an Indycar fan favorite, and recently appeared on both American Ninja Warrior and Family Feud. Also noteworthy? Alexander Rossi, the winner of the 100th running of the Indy 500 and the first rookie to win the Indy 500 since Helio won it back in 2001 – I could see the show running with that buzzworthy fact.  Granted, I personally just don’t find either to be as interesting a casting as Hinch (though TK comes close), but they’re options nonetheless.

So what do you guys think? Do you think Hinch or another Indycar driver would be a good get for this season? Who would you like to see him paired with, if he is cast?
