DWTS Mark Ballas’ New Pepsi Commercial And Miss America Preview For Tonight (Videos)

Who plans to tune in to the Miss America Pageant tonight at 9:00pm ET (ABC) to watch Dancing With The Stars pro Mark Ballas judge? I think I just might!! Here is a little sneak preview for what happened in preliminaries this week….

The Las Vegas Sun also has a cool summary on the Pageant preliminaries which mentions Mark in it. Be sure to read it here if interested as he won “Judge of the Year” and it explains why he is singing above.

Also, below is the Diet Pepsi commercial that Mark choreographed starring Sofia Vergara and his Dad Corky!! I’d say they’ve got themselves a winner here! What do you think?

If you haven’t seen it yet, you can view some behind the scenes footage in an earlier posting here. Way to go, Mark!!

Big Week For DWTS Mark Ballas: Miss America And Diet Pepsi Commercial To Premiere (Details)

This is a big week for Mark Ballas. He’s currently in Las Vegas helping to judge the 2012 Miss America Pageant which will air Saturday night, Jan. 14th on ABC at 9:00pm ET. He posted the picture above at his twitter account of he and some of the other Miss America judges Kris Jenner, Raul De Molina, Chris Powell and Teri Polo.

Also, stay tuned for Sunday as the new Diet Pepsi commercial Mark helped to choreograph will premiere during the Golden Globe Awards. The commercial stars Sofia Vergara (love her! She’s on my Dancing With The Stars wish list to dance). Below is a few more details from USA Today.

In last year’s Beckham ad, the Modern Family star (Sofia Vergara) sported a bikini and sent women chasing after the soccer star so she could easily get a Diet Pepsi. In the new ad, Vergara navigates a crowded Miami nightclub to reach a waiter carrying her coveted Diet Pepsi in the shoot choreographed by Dancing With the Stars pro and USA TODAY blogger Mark Ballas.

“All that matters is that I get my Diet Pepsi. I go after my food and my drink, that’s for sure,” Vergara says, laughing. But “I did miss David.”

Her relationship with Pepsi goes way back. “My first work in the entertainment business was 22 years ago when I did a Pepsi commercial when I was 17. My career started.”

Let’s hope this second Pepsi commercial is as iconic as the first which I loved and much luck to Mark this week!!

ADDING: Thanks to Maddy and DWTSGossip, below is some footage “behind the scenes” of the new commercial…

DWTS Brooke Burke-Charvet To Co-Host Miss America And Releasing Two New Fitness DVDs

Transforming soon on Las Vegas will be the most lovely women in America to compete for the title of “Miss America”. As we reported to you earlier, Mark Ballas is set to judge. Today it was announced that Dancing With The Stars Brooke Burke will help co-host the event. Not only that, she is to release two new fitness DVDs. Here is more from Haute Living. You can read more on the show at the link. There is also a stunning photo to see of her.

Today, the Miss America Organization announced Brooke Burke-Charvet as the returning co-host for the 2012 Miss America Pageant. Brooke is the co-host of ABC’s hit show “Dancing with the Stars” in March, having earned the coveted mirror ball trophy as season seven’s champion with her professional dance partner, Derek Hough.

In January, she will release two new fitness DVDs, “Transform Your Body With Brooke Burke: Strengthen & Condition” and “Tone & Tighten,” and her first book “The Naked Mom,” will be released in paperback in February. With close to two million Twitter followers, Brooke has made a name for herself as a trusted resource in the world of motherhood and the social media network, motivating her to co-create the website ModernMom.com, an online community for “the woman behind the mom.” As a pro blogger, Brooke offers an in-depth look into her personal life on the site, building upon her own powerful “Mommy” brand. As a successful entrepreneur, Brooke created the online store, BabooshBaby.com in 2007, featuring her popular post-pregnancy belly wraps, Tauts.

DWTS Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Tony Dovolani, and Mark Ballas To Help With Beauty Pageants

Last month we reported Mark Ballas will be helping to judge Miss America on January 14th in Las Vegas. But, Mark isn’t the only dancer from Dancing With The Stars to be helping with a beauty pageant. Tony Dovolani and Maks will be helping with the Miss Nevada USA Beauty pageant on Jan 28th and 29th at the Palms’ concert venue, The Pearl, in Las Vegas. Tony will be choreography while Maks will be one of the State’s judges.

Tony Dovolani of “Dancing With the Stars” will be directing the choreography.

The state judges will include “Dancing With the Stars” pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Amp salon operator Michael Boychuck, Josh Strickland of “Peepshow” and Vince Neil of Motley Crue.

DWTS Tony Dovolani In Sherri Hill Evening And Pageant Wear Collection

In the Spring of 2010, Tony Dovolani did a “Miss America” evening dress and prom dress shoot for Sherri Hill. The dresses are still available in the Sherri Hill Fall 2011 Collection. He posed in some other fabulous shots like the one seen above which you can view at New Fashion Avenue or E Fashion Central. Doesn’t he look fantastic? He should do some more modeling!! But, then, the same could be said for almost all the pros!

DWTS Co-Host Brooke Burke Charvet On The Cover Of Prevention Magazine June 2012

Pictured above is Dancing With The Stars co-host Brooke Burke Charvet on the June cover of Prevention Magazine. Brooke was also interviewed about what she loves about being 40, how she keeps fit, plastic surgery, and her belief in Mammograms. Below are some highlights…

On her plastic surgery—breast enhancements in her 20s—and whether she’d have more:

“When you’ve breast-fed four children, things kind of change. So that’s probably the most likely thing on the radar. I went through a phase where I wanted to have smaller breasts. Sometimes it’s easier in dresses and gowns.

“I’ve done little bits of Botox for a long time. If I wasn’t on TV, I probably wouldn’t. Fillers at a minimal level are okay, but it scares me because I don’t want to have that bloated look. In our industry, people do too much too soon or just too much. There’s nothing worse than that frozen ‘I’m 40 but I want to look 25’ look.”

Why she loves being 40:

“Forty is better than 30. I have a better understanding of who I am, what makes me tick, what’s okay and not okay. I’ve had such a great experience professionally in the last 3 or 4 years that it really opened my eyes to not procrastinating.

“I was hosting the Miss America pageant, and I was having a great time. Then it hit me: I could be any one of these girls’ mothers! That’s when I realized I’m freaking 40. It was weird.”

Be sure to pick up a copy of this issue of Prevention Magazine if you’d like to read the full interview and see more pics.

PureDWTS Season 28, Week 6: Power Rankings

Oof, dear LAWD – what a mess this show has become. To be clear: while Ally and Sailor may not be the best dancers this season, they’re far from the worst, and neither should have been in the bottom Monday night.  And yet, here we are, trying to make sense of the fact that Lindsay’s partner (who, despite her best efforts, is still by and far the worst dancer remaining this season) hasn’t even been in the bottom two yet this season, while those actually unfortunate enough to land there seemed like a revolving door of people of color with far more talent and charm than him. Clearly the other cast members were just as gobsmacked as we were, as the looks on their faces as the credits rolled just seemed like a stunned collective countenance of “WTF”. And when I ruminate on how far this show has fallen, it makes me think back to an op-ed from The Cut that Heidi shared back before the season began, which looks at Lindsay’s partner’s participation on the show as symptomatic of a bigger problem we seem to have as a society at the moment: the disdain held for the educated, trained, and competent in favor of the spectacle of rank amateurs taking up space instead. Heck, we see it in the current administration – men and women holding positions they have neither the experience nor the general intelligence necessary to adequately fulfill their duties, while those with the credentials and education to actually do these jobs well are treated with general contempt and are branded “elitists”. And when our damn reigning champion is trying to apply this same narrative to the show and rally his fans to vote for Lauren instead of “those Hollywood types” (you mean the ones that can actually dance, Bones?) much in the same way he constantly reminded us on his season that he “was from a town of 800 people, never danced before in my life, all those other people have dance experience, but vote for me cause I make a great story!!!” Whether it’s Bones trying to convince middle America that he’s “just like them” or you-know-who putting up straw men about being persecuted on the show “because [he’s] a Christian”, it’s all just wagging the dog to divert attention from the fact that THEY CAN’T DANCE but feel entitled to a win nonetheless.

All that being said, I think another big problem the show is struggling with now is the fact that we just don’t have as many viewers invested enough to tune in and vote; and when the total number of votes gets smaller, the potential for shenanigans increases, as it gives fringe voting groups (like Bones’ fans) more leverage. I’ve had a few people on Twitter asking me if I think the new voting format (only Eastern and Central time zones are able to vote while actually watching the show; Mountain and Pacific can vote, but they have to do so blindly) is to blame for some of the weirdness we’ve seen so far this season – and honestly, while I don’t think it’s helping, I think the bigger problem is just that viewership is down and viewers aren’t impassioned enough to vote anymore. To put it in perspective, during the show’s heyday, it was commanding anywhere from 15 to upwards of 22 million viewers per episode (back in season 10 – keep in mind, this was pre-The Voice, which didn’t start airing concurrent with DWTS until 2011); it trended down once it had to go head-to-head with The Voice, though it was still averaging 8-12 million viewers per episode as recently as season 25. Then 2018 came along, and we got a truncated spring season that topped out at 8.77 million for the finale, followed by Bones’ season, which couldn’t muster any better than 7.9 million. And this season, aside from the premiere, we’ve been hovering in the 6 million range. Maybe Heidi could do a numbers post that illustrates the differences that happen when you’ve got 22 million, 12 million, and 6 million viewers voting to give you an idea of how much more power a fringe voting group has when the vote totals are lower, but trust me: Lindsay’s partner doesn’t need a ton of votes (boasting from his fans notwithstanding) to stick around when a) there’s just not as many people voting, total and b) when the judges are being far, FAR too kind with their scoring of him, which proves they’ve learned absolutely nothing in their 14 years judging this show.

So all that aside, we ended up with Ally and Sailor in the bottom 2 (and I had kind of wondered about Ally as recently as 2 weeks ago – I also said we would need to have a “come to Jesus” meeting if she ended up in the bottom two…), and one of them had to go – and I think the judges made the right call in keeping Ally. While Sailor did seem to be improving (and again – DID NOT BELONG IN THE BOTTOM 2), I thought Ally had an overall better command of all the dance styles she had done, while Sailor only seemed to really shine in certain styles (tango and Viennese waltz). I will say I found it a tad peculiar that Sailor took her elimination so hard – you could begin to the see the panic on her face when she was one of the last five still waiting to get called safe, and it was downhill from there; she was absolutely incoherent and inconsolable by the time it was just her and Ally standing there. For someone that stepped in at the last minute for her mother and apparently hadn’t planned to do this show until three days before the premiere, she seemed pretty devastated at the prospect of getting eliminated – while Ally, who I think had far more to prove in doing DWTS and had been signed on from the get-go, seemed far more composed. Everyone processes emotion differently, so who knows – but there were kids on Juniors that accepted their elimination more gracefully than Sailor did. Perhaps my curiosity was just piqued by a blind item someone on Twitter told me about, which implied something to the extent of “it was always the plan for Sailor to be on the show, Christie just agreed to do the show and faked the injury so Sailor could take her place and it was in Sailor’s contract that she had to make it to the semifinals!” Clearly the last part wasn’t true, but the whole Sailor replacing Christie situation still struck me as odd, as there had been rumors before Christie had even been announced as a celeb that she had already dropped out – and then we had Sailor just utterly devastated at being eliminated, and I had to kinda go “Hmmmm.” I saw a few comments on Twitter asking “Wow, where did all of Val’s fans go??? Eliminated early two seasons in a row now!!!”, to which I refer back to my point above that there just aren’t as many people watching and voting, period – additionally, they finally stopped handing him serial ringers after Normani, and so he’s had to really work to get decent dancing out of the three partners he’s had since then…with mixed results. …Read more

PureDWTS Season 28, Week 1: Power Rankings

So we wrapped up the premiere of the “new, improved!” DWTS a little over 24 hours ago, and I’ve got some mixed feelings. My main concern: in the wake of the disastrous year the show had in 2018, they’re currently trying to reinvent/rebrand the show to give ratings a boost and maintain a hope and a prayer of this show surviving into 2020.  The only problem? I feel like the rebranding involves just turning DWTS into Strictly Come Dancing 2.0.

Yes, they’re essentially the same show, in terms of the concept, aesthetic, etc. But Heidi and I have long been reminding people that comparing DWTS and SCD is a bit like apples and oranges, because the fact that the two shows air in completely different markets makes each take on slightly different flavors. Americans and Brits are two different cultures that have different tastes when it comes to television – I have yet to meet an American that understands the appeal of British soap operas (I can’t tell you how many times I fell asleep trying to watch the same god-forsaken episode of EastEnders in college because a girl in my dorm was from London and swore up and down that it was the greatest TV show ever), while I’ve heard more than one Brit puzzle about why American television is so violence-driven (same girl in my dorm was CONVINCED we all carried guns on our person because she had watched 24 before coming to college). And there’s obvious differences between our humor, with British humor being quite a bit drier and high brow than more crass, slapstick American humor. Given all those differences – would it be a stretch to assume that  Americans expect different things out of DWTS than Brits do out of SCD?

With respect to DWTS and what I’ve observed in my 10 years of blogging, I tend to think Americans care less about how many syllabus steps a routine has and care more about being entertained and wowed by a memorable dance. I know SCD is more driven by syllabus content and correct execution of the steps, and low-scoring of non-compliant routine is more commonplace than it is here in the US, where it’s unusual to see any paddle lower than a “6” taken out after week 1. So for things to shift rather suddenly from the DWTS focus on entertaining and memorable dance numbers to a more content-driven approach from the judges, I have to wonder: is this sh*t gonna fly…? Some of the best choreographers we’ve seen on DWTS are the ones that really thrive when they’re unfettered by syllabus  requirements – think Derek, Mark, and Julianne, who all ended up Emmy nominated at some point as a result. We’ve still got a few pros in the current stable that I think choreograph best in a more out-of-the-box setting – namely Jenna, and possibly Brandon. Then again, with the prospect of an Emmy nom a distant memory since the departure of Derek and the onslaught of more competition in the Outstanding Choreograhy category…maybe it’s time to start focusing more on content? I honestly don’t know – but I’m not sure the answer to all of DWTS’ problems is just tweaking everything to match SCD. Time will tell, especially after we hear about this new elimination twist next week…

One good thing to come out of the “let’s do it like SCD!” gambit? The delayed reveal of the partnerships left us more  likely to get unexpectedly WOWED by some of the contestants – and I daresay with all the chatter about Hannah, Karamo, Kel, and Sailor, I did NOT see James coming at all. I was genuinely and delightedly surprised, which was nice. I also didn’t head into this season with a favorite – there were a few contestants/partnerships I found intriguing, but nobody that I knew from the jump I’d be voting for…so I felt like I was seeing everything with fresh eyes. But shall we get on with the rankings?  🙂 …Read more

The Wannabes And Dreamers Of Dancing With The Stars Season 17

Up until this week, what a semi-lacking rumor season it’s been this off season for Dancing With The Stars Season 17! Court was just remarking to Heidi and I last week how unusually quiet it’s been and it’s so true. Even the twitter campaigning for celebrities has been more quiet than the norm. Maybe with the shake ups for the new season, this means a shake up for the rumor season too? Instead for this off season, it seems more fans are campaigning more for their favorite pros (who didn’t dance last season) to return instead….Maks Chmerkovskiy, Chelsie Hightower, and Anna Trebunskaya especially! We’ve also seen an occasion plea for a return of Louis Val Amstel and Dmitry Chaplin.

Also, we usually see a few stars out there campaigning to dance on Dancing With The Stars, but so far, this is pretty nil as well. Though it’s still early too and anything can happen, but, here is what we HAVE noticed for the few fans and stars who are campaigning or who are supporting the campaigning from fans! I also want to ask for my co-horts in crimes thoughts on everything on this topic for what they think!! So look for Courtney’s and Heidi’s input to this post as well. Let us know what you think too and who you’ve seen campaigns for!

First up, Miss America 2013 Mallory Hagan. As you might remember, Mallory remarked several times last season and after she won Miss America she very much would like to dance on Dancing With The Stars. Just take a look at her twitter page to see her retweeting all the fans who are out there campaigning for her. Here are just a few of many here and here. I’m taking this as a sign she still very much would like to dance on Dancing With The Stars. Note too that soon Mallory will be free of her Miss America duties come September 15th after the new Miss America is chosen. Hmmm, can you tell I’m hoping for this one? 🙂 As for the rest, well….

We’ve also noticed some campaigning for teen mom Maci Bookout since she competed in a Dancing With The Stars charity event this summer. Maci has also been rumored to dance in Dancing With The Stars Season 13.

Thirdy, Deena Cortese!! We want to mention Deena since The Blaze is reporting that Geraldo Rivera was referencing her in his tweet that he declined an offer from Dancing With The Stars. As you might remember, Deena was campaigning hard to dance last season and a few of her fans are still campaigning and hoping she’ll dance this season.

And we can’t forget about this one… Beth Chapman!! Every day and with every season, it seems someone is always campaigning for her. In the past she’s been very vocal about wanting to do Dancing With The Stars, but, if you take a look at her twitter currently, she’s not been so vocal this off season. Note how she was turned down by the show in season 14 since they already had their cast selected at the time.

Lastly, Olympian swimmer Ryan Lotche! Lots of his fans haven’t given up campaigning for him to dance on Dancing With The Stars. Dancing With The Stars even asked him to dance last season, but, E Online reported in April that he turned them down since he wanted his own reality show which he got. Note how he recently won two gold medals at Worlds. It sounds like he is a very busy guy, but, could he fit in Dancing With The Stars this season if asked again?

Courtney: Sorry, but I’m a big fat “no” for all of the above – Mallory won’t stop talking about it, I find most of the Teen Mom stars to be highly immature, Deena’s a has-been since Jersey Shore wrapped, I don’t think Beth is notable enough, and I’m pretty sure Lochte’s got the IQ of a carrot.

Heidi: A really STOOPID carrot. In fact, comparing him to a carrot is a disservice to carrots. 😀  Gotta agree with Court. Deena is over, Beth is nowhere, and Maci who?? As for Miss America?? Nah, her reign isn’t over soon enough and that pageant is a non-event in this country in any case. Would they go that route now, with their ratings situation?? I don’t think so.
